Sony :: VAIO Build Quality And User Experience

Aug 16, 2009

I bought a brand-new VAIO sz-220 made in Japan back in 2006 for around $1400. Since then, I've experienced the following problems:

optical drive broken
speaker hissing
fan has unusual whizzing sound
fingerprint scanner broken
trackpad randomly fails to work (buttons/trackpad sticks, I've never spilled liquid, always have clean hands when handling the computer)
ac adapter broke
windows randomly goes into restart/shutdown sequence and freezes midway
laptop runs at 94C when placed on a desk and freshly internally dusted
laptop does not reliably turn off after initiating shutdown sequence (sometimes it freezes midway)..........

Dell :: Latitude E6400 User Review

Nov 22, 2008

It's been over a full week that I use my Latitude E6400 in great depth and here is my review on it. Now, before I start, I would like to apologies for my English, mistakes found are not done by any means of disrespect among you, the reader. Another note, I believe reading several reviews which all says the same thing is kind of useless, so I tried my best to present thing that was not mentioned before. This explains the reason why I don’t show the usual benchmarks, temperature on the machine, etc…

If this is the first review you read, I suggest you to read other reviews on notebookreview.com before reading this one. You can see me as a critical person.

Latitude E6400 Review

I use my laptop to run Office 2007 suit programs to type notes in classes, Steinberg WaveLab 5 to record them. I also use the laptop to do my assignments (Java/C++) at school and anywhere I want to go, as well as my own programming projects (large Flash application). Obviously, I use my machine to check my e-mail with Thunderbird, listen to music, and surf the web, etc... Ah yes, and I do plan to perform some light casual gaming on it on rare occasion.

System selected:Intel Core 2 Duo P8500 (2.26 GHz)Vista SP1 Business edition 64-bitDual Channel (2 stick) 4GB of RAM 800Mhz DDR2 (6-6-6-12) Samsung 1440x900 LED backlit display (LG, I believe)Backlit keyboardIntel Wireless N 5100 cardPanasonic DVD-Burner Dell 9 cell battery (made by: Panasonic)Nvidia Quadro NVS 160MHitachi 160GB HDD 5200RPMSuper detailed system configuration [56K modem warning!]:

When I received my laptop two weeks ago, it was damaged, there was a dent, passing through the process of asking a new one and compensation was easy. I was never put on hold, service was great and in proper English speaking staff (possible location of service: U.S/Canada). I had fun trying all to call all the provided services offered, and the service was very good, one could say almost excellent. I negotiated the price of my machine when I originally ordered it (this was the only time I talked to someone potentially in India), and the service was fast, again no hold time, and negotiation on the price was easy. The sale representative didn't know his stuff on the laptop and claimed to me that it had Latitude ON. Obviously I don't have it, as it cannot be added to the machine, and I asked compensation for that as well. This was done without issue, and I got an apology from the sale representative and its supervisor and Dell customer service supervisor (note that I also got another apology from Dell customer service when I informed them of the damaged machine).

Returning the machine for a replacement was easy and fast. Dell sent me a UPS label via e-mail, which I had to print and put on the Dell box, and call UPS to come and pick it up.

Packaging
Packaging of the laptop was excellent. The box properly protected the machine, and the size is not excessively big where it wastes uselessly space, and not too small like some laptops that you buy in store, which fells like it was made from paper masher. Moreover, putting everything back in the box was very easy. The packaging could potentially lose a full mark as the accessory box is pretty much empty and could make the box smaller. However, considering that more accessories could be added onto the box, and that the box layout is designed for all or almost all Dell laptops, I can't deduct marks for that.
I gave it a 10/10

Accessories
Not much to say, I did get 4 disks with my laptop:
- Drivers and Utility disk
- Power DVD DX 8.0 disk
- Roxio version 9.0 DE disk
- Microsoft Vista 64-bit disk.
and 90W slim Latitude power adapter which I'll get to that later...........

HP/Compaq :: NEWDV6 2010 User Review

May 31, 2010

Long time lurker finally decided to join, best to start of my post count with a lengthy review on HP's new DV6 line.

I’d like to give people interested in HP's new dv6 line a heads up. This came about mainly due to the lack of reviews anywhere on the internet. Anyone with a dv6, feel free experience on the dv6.

Last weekend i purchased a HP DV6 3032tx with specs found here:

HP Pavilion dv6-3000 Entertainment Notebook PC series Home & Home Office

I went into JB HI-FI Australia buying a 13" mac and ending up getting this mainly due to the value, at a similar price as the dv6 was purchased at JB's cost price.

This has been my experience with the product so far

Design
The third generation of the dv6 line has been completely revamped by removing the numeric pad (I personally hate the num pads), and adding a nice chicklet keyboard with some quick launch buttons. One stand out factor is the thickness. It' still 30mm thick however the actually visible thickness is less than 1" thanks to some beautiful tapered edge design. The aluminium/magnesium shell with black keyboard is very mac like, and reminds me of HP's premium ENVY line of notebooks. On the i7 models only the palm rests and lids have a nice looking imprint finish which is very subtle and maintains its professional look. When the system is on, a HP logo glows white on the bottom left hand corner of the lid...

HP/Compaq :: Mini User Review Of ThePavilion Dm3t With SP9300 + G105M Graphics

Jan 30, 2010

Prior to 2006, there was a distinct difference between Apple and the PC industry. Apple specialized in design, and still does, and the PC industry won over customers by wooing them with the best bargain available—features for the price charged—and almost always at the cost of a pedestrian design. In 2006, in an ambitious bid to gain market share, HP launched a massive and hugely successful marketing campaign known as, “The Computer Is Personal Again,” and redesigned all of its laptops with the extremely popular high-gloss Imprint finish. In less than 2 years, HP unseated Dell as the undisputed leader in PC shipments and maintains that lead today.

3 years later, HP is back again (perhaps) to change the game. Borrowing from design cues from Apple’s Macbook Pro line, HP launched the dm3 in late October and the tm2 earlier this month, with designs that feature a brushed aluminum finish. Is it successful? Read more to find out.

How this laptop was purchased

I had shopped for a while to look for a new computer to replace my aging dv6000t from back in the Windows XP days. My options were the HP Pavilion dm3t and the Sony VAIO CW. I visited a Best Buy to check out some of the laptops, and I can say that I was absolutely repulsed by the build quality of the Dells these days. They suck. Period. What really won me over from the Sony CW was the build quality of the dm3t. The aluminum finish really is outstanding. More on that later................

Acer :: Your Experience With The Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ

Nov 27, 2009

I'm thinking of picking up this unit here:

[url]

as it seems like it'll do everything I need.

I'm recording voice overs and singing with it and it's specifically meant to be thin and light for travel - with a good enough screen resolution to edit with the machine while I'm on the go. I'd prefer a Windows XP unit (I'm trying to use Cubase LE and I'm not certain it'll work on Windows 7 Pro) but I can get an IT friend of mine to install XP on it if I need to.

My biggest concern with it - is noise. Is the fan really noisy? I know that I can regulate the fan speed etc. with the little apps that have been created for the unit here on this very board, but how long can one leave off the fan without the unit getting incredibly hot? I'm recording with this unit fairly close to a large diaphragm condenser mic, so really - it needs to be as quiet as possible.

Acer :: Aspire 6920 Review (After 2 Years)

Apr 8, 2010

Hey folks. I wrote a review for The Acer Guy back when I first bought my laptop (Aspire 6920-6621), but it's time for an update.
(Link to my original review [url]
Here's some basic specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium
Two 140gig HD's
1.83GhZ Dual Core Intel Processor
3gig RAM
And some dinky graphics chip.

Well, after two years, I have to say it has held up but not as well as I think it should have.

A few months after writing my first review, I had to send my Laptop to Acer. Admittedly, the customer support was fantastic. They took care of me.

HOWEVER, I'm not pleased with how my computer came back. It wasn't put back together, and I didn't want to send it back to them again.

Regardless, the build quality is a bit iffy. Not sure if other people have had this issue, but cracks are forming in several places. The first time I sent the computer back, it was because of cracks on the bezel. They replaced it, but after a few months the cracks came back. There is also a crack on the bottom cover.

Keyboard flex is there but not too severe.

When I was dusting my keyboard, the sharp end of the spacebar snapped off, so now a good few mm's are missing. I sanded it down and it looks fine, but still.

The express card placeholder doesn't stay in well, in fact, if you aren't careful, the thing will come out.

In terms of performance, it's still holding up. I've not had any problems with Vista, and I game as well as code. Steam has given me a few C++ errors, but meh.

Audio quality is acceptable. The left speaker is crackling and the "subwoofer" adds a nice effect, but overall it's disappointing. Should be better for all the hype.

Screen quality is actually pretty good, much better than most computers I've used. The only thing that I've used that compares is a Mac.

Acer :: Aspire One AOD150-1165 Review

Mar 1, 2009

I had seen these and similar units available for some time. The Acer models caught my attention the first time I came across them browsing through hardware for an order I was placing. They are sleek netbooks with a nice clean paint job resembling a showroom sports car. Ultra portable, thin and lite, these are the best balance of functionality and extreme mobility.

Like I said in my introduction I had seen these online for some time but never bought one. I thought they looked attractive but doubted there efficiency for office use. I didn't want to spend $300+ on something I wasn't sure could meet my needs. I had used a HP mini and hated it. Found the screen too small and unstable. Noticed some flickering with the HP units that turned me off from the netbook PCs. However something about the Acer units kept me curious.

The wife must have noticed how curious I had grown, and surprised me with one for Valentines Day. This was the best gift I could have gotten. This PC is awesome and totally destroyed my skepticism.............................

Acer :: Aspire 7720-6395 Review

Dec 15, 2007

I've uploaded my referenced screen grabs here since I ran into difficulties last night. This seemed like the logical solution.

I bought the Acer Aspire 7720-6395 yesterday. I couldn't find any reviews other than those on Best Buy's website (a couple are okay, but none comprehensive), so I hope to contribute to anyone else who might be considering it but unsure. I live an hour from the nearest big city, so any additional details would've made it easier to make the drive.

Forgive me if there are details you don't need or none that you do. I'll do my best.

I won't repeat the specs that Best Buy gives on their website, but I'll shed light on a couple that aren't clear through writing or screen grabs.

It seems that a number of people bought it thinking it had a Blu-Ray writer (BB had something on their site saying so, apparently), but be sure you note that it is only a Blu-Ray ROM drive. I say only...

Oh, and it is also a dual layer DVD writer and CD writer.

It has an integrated webcam and microphone if you're prone to video chatting.

The speakers are in a strip directly under the power and accessory buttons. It boasts "DOLBY DIGITAL LIVE" above the mesh, but they sound like most other decent laptop speakers. Not great, but pretty good all things considered.......................

Acer :: Aspire 4315- Repair Review

May 15, 2008

I sent my Acer Aspire 4315 notebook to their repair center in Texas. I had a problem with the jack input for the power. It wasn't responding and found out that it was broken (Update: it wasn't actually broken it just felt very loose to the point were it might break). Also the left corner of the notebook was loose. In order to send in your notebook you have to use there online acer depot repair request system. So I sent it in using UPS ground which cost me $40. After 3 days I received and email saying it was received. 2 days later I receive another email saying it was fixed and will be shipped back using Fedex. Then 4 days later when I got home I received a "door tag" saying i wasn't there to pick up the package and sign for it. It came at 11:30 A.M and I get home a 4:00 P.M. So obviously I couldn't sign for it. Because of this problem I called and requested that they ship it after 4:00. They said they can ask the driver but it doesn't guarantee that will be shipped at the time you requested. So the next I come home I get another "door tag" saying I missed my package the second time. This time I asked them to leave it at there facility and let me pick it up. They said I would have to wait until tommorow to get my package. Tommorow arrives and I pick it up. Finally I have my notebook. I now drive back and open up the box. It came with a paper saying it was fixed. So I now get my AC adapter to plug it in. And guess what? They didn't fix the problem. I carefully looked at the paper and it said that they fixed problem stated which in there mind was the loose left corner of my notebook. WTF? They didn't even bother to fixed the important problem, the POWER JACK! That's horrible service! I then call them saying they didn't fix the problem. after being transferred 5 YES 5 TIMES! The support person said they will pay for the shipping to send it back. Which means that I will have to wait even more to get it back AGAIN and actually have it fixed. The only good part about it being shipped back is that they are going to use Fedex priority overnight. WOW WHAT A TREAT!

UPDATE: I havn't shipped the laptop back. I was about to until I decided to take one last "explore" inside of it. I found out that the power jack wasn't directly attached to the motherboard, just a wire leading to it. So with a little superglue or epoxy it would be fixed. Now that I know what to do. There will be no need to send it back and wait another horrible week!

Acer :: Aspire AS5740g-6454 Review And 1st Impression

Feb 27, 2010

I am a big Asus g-series fan since getting a g51vx-a1 gaming laptop needless to say i sold it and have a g73 on preorder and an m11x due both next month.
In the meantime they keep pushing EDD on both so I need to game right? and since I sold my beloved G51 (early Feb) and was currently using either a vaio fz470 OR an asus f3sv to game.
I wasn't happy with the results i was getting raidwise in WoW ,basically all settings set to low

I looked around for a cheap laptop with these specifications:

better than average cpu, gpu with dx11 support, HDMI and cheap

I looked at other offerings from Asus but many i was looking at N61/N71 were also on pre-order sad times indeed.

surfing the local comp store web I decided to search for something with the ati 5650 which i read got great reviews for gaming.
up pops the 5740 and its big brother 7740
since i wanted cheap i opted for the 5470:

Acer :: TehSuigi's Upgrade Experience

Nov 14, 2008

It also gave me the chance to benchmark some graphics drivers on a relatively vanilla system, which I'll post some point soon.

In the meantime, while I'm waiting for Steam and Windows Update to finish their respective downloads, I might as well post about my experience.

The Upgrade Itself
After removing the backplate and the fan (which I had already done once, when I cleaned them both out), I had the enviable task of removing the heatsink. For those of you that don't know, the CPU and GPU heatsinks are conjoined by a common pipe of copper. This pipe makes it INCREDIBLY difficult to shoehorn the thing out of the notebook - it took some effort and a little bit of noise that didn't sound good. But, it was removed.

In terms of thermal cooling, give Acer some credit. The thermal pads attached to the graphics card's memory chips are squished under a screwed-on plate that is separate from the heatsink - you can remove it and only the GPU core will be exposed! Thus, the main worry I had about the upgrade was for naught.......................

Acer :: 6920G, Windows 7 Experience

Jan 19, 2009

Thought I'd put my experience with the Window 7 Beta on my Acer Aspire 6920G, for those considering it but not sure whether it works etc.

Installation: Installation went smooth, picked up alot of things out of the box, but for the things it doesn't, you can use the backup feature on the vista partition to create a disc with all the drivers etc. on

Drivers: Well there are some you'll have to get yourself, e.g. Graphics Card drivers, I've got the HD3650 flavour of machine and my drivers are found here: [url]

Another driver that didn't work, and the one from the drivers disc doesn't either is the SD Card reader, however you can get the drivers direct from JMicron here: http://www.jmicron.com/Driver.htm go into the ftp ( there's a link towards the end of the text) and get the driver for the JMB38X not 36X, this driver works a charm.

I can't speak for ExpressCard devices as I don't use them myself.

Sound works out of the box.

Even after installing the drivers for it the webcam refuses to work.

With the drivers from the driver disc created in Vista, bluetooth works............

I have tried starting the computer up connected and also not connected to the tv and it makes no difference. I have used the Fn+F5 key to switch from my screen to the tv and still nothing.

The only thing I get is some times an error message sysing graphics driver error but I would expect a new laptop with ATI radeon HD 3470 be able to cope with a blueray disc output?

Acer :: Installing Windows 7 On An 6920G - Drivers, Experience Etc

Jan 24, 2010

Well my PC came OEM installed with Vista 32 Bit edition and I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition (as i get a student discount).

Looking around the forums and internet in general, I have noticed that on the acer 6920g there seems to always be a problem with drivers such as the CineDash, Realtek, TV tuner, Modem, Card reader, Fingerprint, Webcam, Bluetooth etc.. I have also read that you can fix the launchmanager by running in Vista compatiability mode.

If i do an in-place upgrade (going from vista 32-bit to windows 7 ultimate) will it be fine? Also is there anything I should be cautionous of such as the drivers etc..

I would actually really like to do a clean installation but I'm worried that the keyboard "quick" buttons (such as the internet,bluetooth,mail on the side of keyboard will not work)- can someone please confirm if I did a clean installation, would theese buttons still work?

Also I have two games:GTA IV, Call of Duty 5 , will theese both work on windows 7 (or on compatability).

Acer :: 4740G Review (Malaysia)

Apr 13, 2010

Intro

"Talk about your first impressions. Reasons for buying."
Its for work. Price point was actually as low as I could find in a proper branded laptop in stock YET with dedicated video. Initial impression was positive although I most of my history is with Dell. Primary thing is keyboard since for ME I prefer US layout vs UK which sometimes happens here.

Specs:
Primary items include the i3 and Nvidia 310M. 500GB drive, bluetooth, and 3USB ports were also notable items during my comparisons

What's in the Box:

Warranty card/info
90W power brick
battery
laptop (of course)
NOT included: media CD's

Design

"What do you think of the aesthetics of the notebook?"
Quite pleased so far but do not care for the fingerprint attracting surface on the back of the LCD (viewed when closed). The flush mounted look of all the buttons and power are nicely done.........................

Acer :: Ferrari 1000 Review

Jun 13, 2009

Acer Ferrari 1000

Introductions

The Acer Ferrari 1000 is the fifth incarnation of the Acer Ferrari line. The Ferrari line was brought as a joint effort between Acer and AMD. The Ferrari part comes into play as both Acer and AMD are sponsors of the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 racing team. First impressions of the Acer Ferrari 1000 notebook brought about an impulsive need to purchase. This notebook sets itself apart from the crowd with performance and styling which will get it noticed on your trip to the local coffee house or anywhere for that matter. The Acer Ferrari 1000 is typically categorized as an ultra-compact notebook being that it is only a 12.1 inch notebook. This was one of the primary reasons that this reviewer had for purchasing the Acer Ferrari 1000. At the time this reviewer was looking for a notebook the primary concerns were small, lightweight and the ability to support 4GB or memory. The Acer Ferrari 1000 met all these needs and even delivered more. However, the Ferrari 1000 did not come cheap at an MSRP $1999.

The Ferrari 1000 was the first Ferrari to feature a 12.1 inch chassis, where previous generations were either a 15 or 15.4 inch chassis. Acer meticulously was able to engineer all the style, performance, and quality of the Ferrari line into a small 12.1 inch chassis. Furthermore, they just about got it right on the first try.

Acer :: 4810TZ & A Small Review

Oct 19, 2009

The design looks simply beautiful. The silver lid and the gun metal color inside is awsome. The dark colors inside will help in not causing any strain for your eyes even after working for long time.

The touchpad too has a matte finish, making it easy to use. It is very responsive. The scroll and zoom gestures helps a lot in reducing the effort though am not convinced with the third gesture, would be good if this gesture could be used for something better.

Option to turn off/on the bluetooth and wifi via the buttons/touch buttons is really good, I had trouble with some other laptops trying to find out how to do this.

The option to turnoff the screen helps conserve energy, while listening to music or doing some activity which do not need any human intervention. The screen is bright enough. I keep it at the lowest brightness while working, without any issues...............

Processor: AMD Turion (tm) 64 x2 Mobile TL-50 1.6 Ghz
RAM: 2GB
HD: 120 GB (5400RPM) SATA
VGA: ATI x1600 (512 with 256 Hyper Memory
Operatting System: XP Media Center

Other specifications can be requested. I was really very much willing to have review of this laptop over this computer that i hardly found. Though I did found nice pictures of this computer in the pictures section. Uptill now I am not able to get any nice score form this comptuer as I was expecting due to which now I am thinking I should have gone for Aspire 5920G as it comes with Nvidia 8600GT and having Ferrari was not a good choice as I am casual gamer. But its appearance and overall outlook is very attractive. Specially the name: FERRARI though Ferrari is not performing upto its name. My old system was.
Acer Aspire 5651 AWLMi
Core Duo: 1.73 Ghz
RAM: 2GB
HD: 120 GB (5400 RPM) SATA
VGA: Nvidia 7600 (128 MB)......................

Acer :: Timeline 4810t Initial Impression And Review

Jun 7, 2009

Just purchased the Acer Timeline 4810T from Staples. This is is the 14.1 inches variant, thought I might post some initial impression for all who are interested.

Spec
Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 1.4 ghz, 800 Mhz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache
4GB DDR 3 ram
320GB 5400rpm Western Digital
DVD+RW super multi
Wireless A/B/G (Atheros)
14.1 in 1368 x 768 LED (720P)
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bits

HARDWARE
Contained the Acer Timeline, small form factor adapter/charger, 6 Cell 5800mah, 63WHR battery. manual and the usual documentation. No operating system dvd nor driver disc were included, however, the laptop did give me an option to create recovery discs.

The initial inspection of chasis was favorable, as you can see in the picture, it is thinner than a white macbook, roughly same thickness closed as the aluminum macbook. Chasis was rigid with no flex, the only part of the laptop that exhibit any kind of flex is the keyboard. Should you type hard, you can see the center of the keyboard being compressed downward. The chicklet style keyboard however, remained very usable and responsive.

Sound is loud and clear unlike tinny netbook speaker.

Mine comes with 3 USB port, 1 VGB, 1 HDMI, 1 ethernet port and 1 DVD+RW super multi. It also has a 5 in 1 memory card reader towards the front. 1 headphone output and 1 microphone input..........................

Sony :: New Vaio User

Dec 10, 2009

After having HP/Compaq notebooks for the last several years I decided to go with Sony this time. I got the VGN-NW270F model.

Overall I'm really pleased with it. I especially love this keyboard style. I do a ton of typing and this keyboard is just great.

This is not so much a complaint as a question. I've never noticed this on other laptops before so maybe this is common to all, or maybe it's common to Sony or this particular model, not sure. But the chassis around the screen doesn't feel tight.

I noticed this when closing it the other night. It's not falling apart or separating or anything, but it just doesn't feel snapped/glued (whatever) in place. Also, on the left and right sides below the screen, it kind of pushes out a little. You can feel it, and only slightly see it if you're really looking.

I know this seems like a minor issue (if even that) so I'm not complaining. I'm just curious as to whether this is normal or if it's something that could potentially get worse.

Apple :: Macbook Pro User

Well, I almost bought a base FW390, decided to wait so I could buy a upgraded version, and after using both a FW and MBP at best buy I am in love with the MBP.

Now, its quite a chunk of change and will be awhile before I can buy one but I wanted to hear from unbiased users about the cons of a MBP, i've heard stories on overheating units, bad wifi reception etc, etc.

So let me know MBP users, what do you hate about your notebook?
