by chance, my wife, with the 500 dollar limit i gave her, bought me an acer aspire 5315-2698 from qvc. i think after send it over to me here in iraq she spent 575. it was 525 on easy pay.
after all this reading, i went out and bought a few things:
MICRON/SAMSUNG 2GB DDR2 2GB667SO 1 55.00 System/Device = Acer Aspire PC2-5300 667MHZ SODIMM
(from one of those ram websites...)
and

It also gave me the chance to benchmark some graphics drivers on a relatively vanilla system, which I'll post some point soon.
In the meantime, while I'm waiting for Steam and Windows Update to finish their respective downloads, I might as well post about my experience.
The Upgrade Itself
After removing the backplate and the fan (which I had already done once, when I cleaned them both out), I had the enviable task of removing the heatsink. For those of you that don't know, the CPU and GPU heatsinks are conjoined by a common pipe of copper. This pipe makes it INCREDIBLY difficult to shoehorn the thing out of the notebook - it took some effort and a little bit of noise that didn't sound good. But, it was removed.
In terms of thermal cooling, give Acer some credit. The thermal pads attached to the graphics card's memory chips are squished under a screwed-on plate that is separate from the heatsink - you can remove it and only the GPU core will be exposed! Thus, the main worry I had about the upgrade was for naught.......................

Thought I'd put my experience with the Window 7 Beta on my Acer Aspire 6920G, for those considering it but not sure whether it works etc.
Installation: Installation went smooth, picked up alot of things out of the box, but for the things it doesn't, you can use the backup feature on the vista partition to create a disc with all the drivers etc. on
Drivers: Well there are some you'll have to get yourself, e.g. Graphics Card drivers, I've got the HD3650 flavour of machine and my drivers are found here: [url]
Another driver that didn't work, and the one from the drivers disc doesn't either is the SD Card reader, however you can get the drivers direct from JMicron here: http://www.jmicron.com/Driver.htm go into the ftp ( there's a link towards the end of the text) and get the driver for the JMB38X not 36X, this driver works a charm.
I can't speak for ExpressCard devices as I don't use them myself.
Sound works out of the box.
Even after installing the drivers for it the webcam refuses to work.
With the drivers from the driver disc created in Vista, bluetooth works............

as it seems like it'll do everything I need.
I'm recording voice overs and singing with it and it's specifically meant to be thin and light for travel - with a good enough screen resolution to edit with the machine while I'm on the go. I'd prefer a Windows XP unit (I'm trying to use Cubase LE and I'm not certain it'll work on Windows 7 Pro) but I can get an IT friend of mine to install XP on it if I need to.
My biggest concern with it - is noise. Is the fan really noisy? I know that I can regulate the fan speed etc. with the little apps that have been created for the unit here on this very board, but how long can one leave off the fan without the unit getting incredibly hot? I'm recording with this unit fairly close to a large diaphragm condenser mic, so really - it needs to be as quiet as possible.

Well my PC came OEM installed with Vista 32 Bit edition and I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition (as i get a student discount).
Looking around the forums and internet in general, I have noticed that on the acer 6920g there seems to always be a problem with drivers such as the CineDash, Realtek, TV tuner, Modem, Card reader, Fingerprint, Webcam, Bluetooth etc.. I have also read that you can fix the launchmanager by running in Vista compatiability mode.
If i do an in-place upgrade (going from vista 32-bit to windows 7 ultimate) will it be fine? Also is there anything I should be cautionous of such as the drivers etc..
I would actually really like to do a clean installation but I'm worried that the keyboard "quick" buttons (such as the internet,bluetooth,mail on the side of keyboard will not work)- can someone please confirm if I did a clean installation, would theese buttons still work?
Also I have two games:GTA IV, Call of Duty 5 , will theese both work on windows 7 (or on compatability).

Hello every one, I am interested on the Acer Aspire AS5532 that is currently on sale at bestbuy, it have a single core AMD Athlon 54 1.6, with ATI video card, and also I am looking at the Acer 5517 from staples which have a 2ghz Turion II
I have used HP computers for the last 6 years and never owned an Acer, I know first hand that Acer quality wasnt the best a few years ago as I had to troubleshoot and fix my friend's Acer while in college, but now that my HP died I need a cheap and reliable laptop for the mean time. ive been looking arouind the forums here and ive read that my acer 5315 can be upgraded a bit which i love as i dont like the poor celeron cpu and the 512mb ram so i bought the best cpu i could which wat a core 2 duo t7700 and 2 2 gig ram sticks (pc2-5300) problem is the cpu works a treat but when i put the 4 gig ram my lappy resets when windows tries to load and i dont understand why? it works great with 1 2gb ram and 1 512mb but only when i put the 512 in 1st then the 2gb stick on top, im sure i have prob miss read sommit but dont know wat, can anyone help me out on this issue? i did do a reformat on my system when i upgraded and i even used a 64 bit windows as i know the 32 bit version dont really like 4 gig

I have the above laptop running windows XP. I installed following the instructions from the soulpass site information.
Everything is perfect apart from this S-video out, which no longer detects the cable is connected. It has worked prior to this installation.
is there any driver I am missing?

i have done a clean install of windows 7 on my 5315 everything runs perfect just one small thing when i use the volume buttons the green bars that used to come up at the bottom of the screen no longer appear,

Is it safe to remove any of these or will doing so cause more trouble than its worth.
Reason: I never use any of them. In fact, I just removed all the games from the machine.

I got a problem with my Acer Aspire 5315. The HDD is shown in the bios but won't show in Vista most of the time. The HDD is completely formated, including the Acer partition. So recovery is not an option.
The problem is strange because it is not consistent. Sometimes I am able to acces the drive and install Vista. But then the next day,when i try to boot again, i only see a cursor after the Acer boot screen.
I've tried running in IDE mode. I also tried replacing the HDD with a new one. I installed vista with the correct Intel driver.
I also tried running Linux live cd. It also sees the HDD drive correctly but when i try to acces it, the program freeses.
I'm affraid something is wrong with the I/O controller, or it is a loose cable.
If you think otherwise, please let me know. If not, i'd like to know how I can check the HDD cable.

My Acer 5315 died during a power outage while updating the BIOS. I have been trying to revive it using an old post I found. I suspect everything is ok except for the autoexec.bat file that I have written. Any help? Or does anyone know where I can just get the Inside recovery disc?

Every so often my laptop shuts down. Like it seems after it comes back from a sleep session the fan doesnt come back on. I had to replace the hard drive in it once because I think it fried from getting to hot. I don't know whats wrong with it. I had a cool pad, but it didnt keep it to cool. Is there any fixes, or fans I could put in it to keep it cool? Or even drill any holes anywhere to cool it down? its an acer 5315 model.

I have a Acer Aspire 5315 that has been causing me a lot of problem. It recently started to shutdown with no warning and keept doing it for a while until it died. I have searched the forum for answers but havent been able to find anything good. This whole week it hasnt been able to boot. I tried pulling out the harddrive, switching memory modules, cleaning up the clogged heatshink without any resultats. I think the shutdown problem was due to the clogged heatsink and the computer overheateting. Now it won't boot at all.
When I press the powerbutton the fan spins up and the power led turns green. 4-5 sec after that fan stops and after few more sec the green led turns off but no boot.

My M keeps falling off so I order a repacement key from Machina but the latch they sent me didn't work.
It said made for the 5315 but it was smaller. I went on ebay and there alot of replacement keyboards for ACER 5315. I just want to make sure I buy the correct one.

Acer support website is clear enough not to confused version or model... so why some users report bios flash problem on some 5315?

I've just completed a CPU upgrade on my 5315 (to a T7300, which took 15 minutes!). I'm now thinking of upgrading the memory from my current 2GB @ 667 MHz (with the new CPU the memory runs at 667 MHz rather than 533 MHz with the old CPU) to 2GB @ 800 MHz.
However, I've read that the performance increase between 667 MHz and 800 MHz is very little, thus, it's not worth spending the money, even if it is only $AUD40.
Can anyone provide any input, benchmarks or experiences?

1. If I press the on switch, it doesn't turn on the laptop right away. I have to press it twice or three times and then it starts booting up. This occurs whether I am using the AC or just the battery which is fully charged.
2. My next problem is probably connected to problem one. If I try restart, it will not restart and I have to press the on/off button twice and then maybe it will reboot.
All the above just started after I tried increasing the memory of my laptop, 5315 to 4gb. Then I had a problem the screen went black but I realized later that my battery wasn't fully charged and when it was, my laptop was able to boot and work properly.I replaced the memory with original 2gb of ram.
Is the Acer laptop able to turn on with just AC and not the battery ?

I would like to upgrade my 5315-2153 laptop to a dvd writer. Which models could I use and will Xp recognize the writer installed and work properly?
Which Intel Core Duos types could I install instead of the Celeron CPU that this laptop has. Would the Core Duo CPU be pin compatable and all I would have to do is use new artic cpu thermal compound to make sure it is mounted properly and greased properly.

In the past week, my aspire 5315 running vista premium 32bit has been randomly shutting off for what seems like no apparent reason. There's no warning of the shut down, it just turns off. It does this whether connected to the internet or not, and there isn't any one program that's the common denominator. Also, it doesn't boot up successfully every time (maybe 1 out of every 4 attempts). Instead, it just stays on a black screen with a single white blinking horizontal dash (the character two spaces to the left of the backspace button + shift). The computer had started doing this initially when I installed the latest update through Windows Update. I used System Restore and the problem seemed to be fixed. Then the problem started again a couple days later while watching "Lost" on ABC.COM. I ran Windows Defender and it didn't come up with anything.
I've tried running Kaspersky a few times, but the computer shuts down well before the scan is finished (even in safe mode). Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

We got this 5315-2153 for our daughter at the secret sale a couple christmas's ago. It has been great for her until recently. I was removing some games she has got a little to old for and trying to regain some HD space. A thunder storm rolled in and i had her shut it down and unplug it. Infact, we shut down and unplugged all the notebooks and large screen lcd's in the house.
Storm rolled thru pretty quick and within a half hour i was trying to turn her acer back on and continue with what i was doing. With the battery in it, and the power plugged into the wall, all i got was the power light (solid), a hard drive and cd rom blink and it just sat there with the fan running. Thats it, no lcd light, nothing more than i just stated........................................

why my booting up of xp seemed to be the same speed as the original celeron cpu and was told that I will only see a improvement when I use multiple programs at the same time since I am using a 2.2GHZ cpu. A friend discarded his old sata drive in a laptop and gave me the drive to experiment with. I installed xp on this drive and it really boots faster but I need the drivers to make this install working. I thought that I once downloaded two zip files with all the drivers but can't find it. Could you please give me the link for the acer drivers for the 5315 laptop.
