I'm trying to find info on an aspire... Not the model # itself as that is not the problem, but the sub model#...
The model is Acer Aspire 8930G, but the sub model # is 6963 and that is where my research seems to go dry... Does anyone have info on this sub model #?
Also i might ask is how user friendly is the 8930G for upgrades as for the processor and video? The current processor is the T5800 with the 9600m nvidia... Would it make sense to upgrade and what is the potential of this 8930G with the T5800?
As far as I am concerned; the two graphic cards are not hugely different in performance. Is that $480 difference solely for CPU worth it?
I am not a huge gamer, but I do play some games occasionally and don't mind being blown away by the photo-realistic graphics in the future.
So the thing is, with the 2.5GHz, I may be able to swap with a much better graphics card and able able to play games with awesome graphic a few years down the road; whereas, with only 2.0GHz CPU, you can't really do much.
I have a Aspire 8920 and I run World of Warcraft and I had terrible problems with low fps, when I check my cpu monitor thing in windows side bar when the low fps happens I see that its maxed at 100% so I had sent my machine back to Acer to be repaired and they have aparently replaced the graphix card.
I have the machine back now and Im still having major issues trying to run WoW, the only way I get a steadyish frame rate is if I have to have all settings down to min which obviously makes the game play a little naff. With any increase in setting raiding is an inpossibility, its just unplayable.
Is this machine of capable spec to be able to run it effienciently or should I get a big hammer and smash it to bits? or is there more of a underlying problem that acer may not of picked up on at the time? or is there something that I can do to enhance it performance.
My partner plays SIMS3 and even with that installed on here its really jumpy.
Computer goes to "startup repair". "Windows cannot repair automatically" "No System restore points have been created"! If I use my recovery dvd's all data and apps will be lost.
Recovery-cds.com sells a "boot Disk" that will allow me to retrieve all data etc before reinstalling Vista to original install.......
I bought the Aspire 8920 from Best Buy here in Canada. You can view the specs of my configuration of the 8920 here.
I absolutely LOVE the laptop. I love high resolution; I love the Blu-ray drive; I love the 4Gigs of Ram; I love the 2 hard drives which give me almost 3/4 of a terabyte. Acer even sent me an additional power adapter and additional battery for FREE (I think the agent I was talking to was just having a good day). Everything about this laptop is awesome! Except one thing...
My configuration comes with the T5750 processor. It turns out that the T5750 doesn't support Intel Virtualization Technology. I've been intending on installing Windows Server 2008 as my primary OS so that I can use Hyper-V (I've heard great things about it, but I haven't really touched it too much yet), but I just found out that you MUST have a processor that either has Intel VT or AMD-V or else Hyper-V will not work. Currently I use VMWare Workstation for my VMs but I can't have any 64-bit guest OSs because of the same problem... my processor doesn't have VT. Don't ask me why I didn't research all this stuff BEFORE buying my new laptop... I'm still kicking myself for that.
So... onto my question(s). There are some configurations of the 8920 that have processors that support Intel VT (ie. T7500, T9500, etc.). I want to, again, upgrade to a machine that has a processor that I need... but I love the Aspire 8920 too much so I think I'm just going to get one of those higher configurations. However, there is a little problem. Intel VT comes turned off by default. The only way for it to be turned on is in the BIOS. I've read in several forums that a few manufacturers are either forgetting to add this BIOS setting or just not doing it at all.
Question 1) To anyone reading this who has an Aspire 8920 with a processor that supports Intel VT (Find out if your processor has VT support): a) What processor do you have? b) Do you know what configuration of the Aspire 8920 you have (ie. 8920-6671)? c) Can you confirm if there is a "Virtualization" or "VT" setting in the BIOS?
Question 2) To anyone reading this that does a lot of virtualizing on their Aspire 8920: a) What virtualization software are you using? b) What guest OSs are you running and what are you using them for? c) Do the VMs run well for you?
Question 3) Since were somewhat on the topic, is there anyone that has some experience with Hyper-V and virtualization under Windows Server 2008; and if so, what are you personal opinions on it compared to other virtualization solutions out there?
I have a curious issue that has begun to pop up, I believe after I installed a few drivers from laptopvideo2go. Long story short I tried to reset back to the old Acer drivers and I spent a few hours trying to get my video to turn back on.
But here's the actual problem - some games will randomly minimize on startup and then not allow me to switch to them.
I first noticed this with Frets on Fire, where I would boot it up, it would look like it would work and then stay minimized for a while. Click on it in the taskbar and it would either pretend to go to the game or just sit there, moving my mouse to the top left corner. Alt-Tab, similar, sometimes works sometimes doesn't. If I do Switch To in task manager, it works a bit more often but sometimes takes a few times.
I've now noticed this with COD4, Fallout 3, and Trackmania Nations. Fallout 3 causes the game to crash. I've tried stopping as many open programs/processes as possible and it sometimes fixes it, sometimes doesn't.
If it isn't clear, I have an Acer Aspire 8920G with a 9500M GS. I'm currently using the relatively stock 7.15.1(1.7561) drivers.
Has anyone here purchased the Aspire One 8 GB XP version? I have read lots of bad performance experiences from people who have installed XP onto their SSD Aspire One but have not heard from those who have purchased it with XP factory installed.
Notebook was brought to me dead. Meaning it will not start, no fans come on nothing.
I was told to keep it because of cost of replacement board.
So I have been reading in these forums that the motherboard might/can be change for a different one, other then the original(MB.TEB06.003). Like to know if this can be or has been done.
Also, if not can this mobo MB.TEB06.003 handle a duel-core cpu/
I recently picked up a nice 1410, the 12" version. Looking around on Acer's site it appears they used this name in the past for a 14" laptop as well? Is the new 1410 the laptop people are discussing in the other threads with the Timeline?
The primary reason I ask is because I'd like to buy another AC adapter off Ebay, and it seems many that come up for the 1410 may be for the old laptop. Is there some other model or part number I should be searching for?
I have a friend who bought an Acer Aspire 5315 model icl50 with Vista from her nephew. He included a router with it which he used to get online. I have a desktop and know nothing about notebooks. I have an idea of the function of a router but what I'd like to know is does she have to use the router to access the internet? Can't she use a wifi card instead? If so what kind? She lives in a rural area that doesn't have cable internet services and her only option has been AT&T dsl which she really doesn't care for as AT&T keeps having problems with it and it's a toss of the coin on which days it wants to work.
Laptop is a 8920. It plays blu-ray discs through acer arcade just fine. When you plug in the HDMI cable to the TV it will seem like it's playing then it stops and gives an error message. It will play movies off the hard drive through the HDMI cable to the TV just fine. I downloaded an installed the latest video driver. I have reinstalled vista (alt F10) as well. I sent the laptop back to Acer and they intalled a brand new blu-ray drive.
I've been searching around, but haven't found much info on upgrading some components of the 8920...I'll have to admit that my search skills are not top notch...
I'm leaning towards the 8920-6030 model, but there's a few things I'd like changed.
Can the CPU be upgraded? I'm thinking about slapping a T9x00 in there. Maybe a T9500 instead of the T8100. I know the CPU here isn't much of a bottleneck, but I'm a nut.
Can the GPU be upgraded? I looked at the manual that was posted here on the forum, and it showed a "GPU Socket". Does that mean I can pull out the 9500M and stick something like a 8800M GTX in it's place?
How does the Acer 8930 differ from the 8920 - and in particular, from the 8920-6746? I was just about to order the Acer AS8920-6746 from Newegg - and then I saw a reference to the 8930, which appears to be a newer model.
i was just wondering about the specs for this drive like the writing speeds for cd-r, cd-rws and such and cant find a phone number for the company to call and ask them because i have been having problems using cd-rws like verbatim 16x-24x wont work but my LG 10x works fine and same with an hp 10x cd-rw is there a reason for this?
if it's possible to switch LCD panel between Aspire 892 and 8930. Since the 8930 that I have is only HD+ capable, I'd like ti "plug" the full HD LCD panel from 8920G that I also owne. Is there technical manuals about how to fully dismantle a laptop?
I've found what's wrong with the fingerprint reader on the 8920/6920 after a vista reinstall, but I don't know how to change/fix it.
Basically it's upside down - If you swipe fingers as normal, you have the issue of multiple swipes to login, cannot register fingers and constant misread/misswipe indicators.
If you swipe your finger towards the screen (ie backwards) or push it up the reader towards the screen, it works perfectly. 3 swipes to register again and log in first time every time.
I tested this over the last week and with the fiingernav test, and this shows the same - up goes scrolls down and down scrolls up.
Short of completely dismantling the machine and turning the module around I can't see how to fix it.
I accidentally (don't ask how) deleted a folder containing 180 GB of data from my 8920 (with 640gb hdd), and foolishly emptied the recycle bin after that. The data was in drive d: please give me some help guys..i have no idea how to recover my life which is my-180gb folder. Honestly, this is the most f-up error that ever happened to me
how i can install the internal tv tuner into the 6930...i have the spot where the whole can be popped out does anyone know hot to install it? like how much do i have to take apart or the part number for the US version of the tuner..
i've already did a bunch of upgrades thanks to this site!

As a reasonably new Acer user and sometimes helper on this forum, what I find most irritating about Acer is their numbering system. Having mostly used Toshiba's before, Iwas used to progressive numbering with their models.
ie; A50,A60,A70 and so on now up to around A350 etc. Acer however, seems to be all over the place with their model numbers.
I have had a breakthrough in my laptop experience. I actually opened it up.
I followed the manual and no problems as of yet.
My question is the point in me opening up my laptop was to find the motherboard make and model and revision version number. I was checking to see if there was a bios update for this laptop and the advice given was to get the exact motherboard make etc..
and the best advice on how to get an exact match was to open it up. I did and I searched as far as my cheap tools would let me. I was able to remove the cpu fan but when I went to remove the cpu heatsink I could not get the screws to budge. According to the manual the cpu is beneath the cpu heat sink and this is where I thought I needed to go to find the motherboard make and model etc...
