Acer :: 8920/30 And Upgrades

Sep 19, 2008

I've been searching around, but haven't found much info on upgrading some components of the 8920...I'll have to admit that my search skills are not top notch...

I'm leaning towards the 8920-6030 model, but there's a few things I'd like changed.

Can the CPU be upgraded? I'm thinking about slapping a T9x00 in there. Maybe a T9500 instead of the T8100. I know the CPU here isn't much of a bottleneck, but I'm a nut.

Can the GPU be upgraded? I looked at the manual that was posted here on the forum, and it showed a "GPU Socket". Does that mean I can pull out the 9500M and stick something like a 8800M GTX in it's place?

Acer :: Aspire 8920

Oct 5, 2008

I am fairly certain I will be getting the Acer Aspire 8920 once I can sell my old laptop (14") for a fairly decent price.

But I am struggling of which version of 8920 I should get. Two caught my attention though...

1) Price: $1649: 2.5GHz CPU; 4 GB memory; 320GB; Nvidia 9500M GS

2) Price: $1170: 2.0GHz CPU; 4 GB memory; 320GB; Radeon HD 3650

As far as I am concerned; the two graphic cards are not hugely different in performance. Is that $480 difference solely for CPU worth it?

I am not a huge gamer, but I do play some games occasionally and don't mind being blown away by the photo-realistic graphics in the future.

So the thing is, with the 2.5GHz, I may be able to swap with a much better graphics card and able able to play games with awesome graphic a few years down the road; whereas, with only 2.0GHz CPU, you can't really do much.

Acer :: Aspire 8920 - Low Fps

Jul 30, 2009

I have a Aspire 8920 and I run World of Warcraft and I had terrible problems with low fps, when I check my cpu monitor thing in windows side bar when the low fps happens I see that its maxed at 100% so I had sent my machine back to Acer to be repaired and they have aparently replaced the graphix card.

I have the machine back now and Im still having major issues trying to run WoW, the only way I get a steadyish frame rate is if I have to have all settings down to min which obviously makes the game play a little naff. With any increase in setting raiding is an inpossibility, its just unplayable.

Is this machine of capable spec to be able to run it effienciently or should I get a big hammer and smash it to bits? or is there more of a underlying problem that acer may not of picked up on at the time? or is there something that I can do to enhance it performance.

My partner plays SIMS3 and even with that installed on here its really jumpy.

Laptop is a 8920. It plays blu-ray discs through acer arcade just fine. When you plug in the HDMI cable to the TV it will seem like it's playing then it stops and gives an error message. It will play movies off the hard drive through the HDMI cable to the TV just fine. I downloaded an installed the latest video driver. I have reinstalled vista (alt F10) as well. I sent the laptop back to Acer and they intalled a brand new blu-ray drive.

Acer :: Virtualization / Hyper-V On The Aspire 8920

Sep 17, 2008

I bought the Aspire 8920 from Best Buy here in Canada. You can view the specs of my configuration of the 8920 here.

I absolutely LOVE the laptop. I love high resolution; I love the Blu-ray drive; I love the 4Gigs of Ram; I love the 2 hard drives which give me almost 3/4 of a terabyte. Acer even sent me an additional power adapter and additional battery for FREE (I think the agent I was talking to was just having a good day). Everything about this laptop is awesome! Except one thing...

My configuration comes with the T5750 processor. It turns out that the T5750 doesn't support Intel Virtualization Technology. I've been intending on installing Windows Server 2008 as my primary OS so that I can use Hyper-V (I've heard great things about it, but I haven't really touched it too much yet), but I just found out that you MUST have a processor that either has Intel VT or AMD-V or else Hyper-V will not work. Currently I use VMWare Workstation for my VMs but I can't have any 64-bit guest OSs because of the same problem... my processor doesn't have VT. Don't ask me why I didn't research all this stuff BEFORE buying my new laptop... I'm still kicking myself for that.

So... onto my question(s). There are some configurations of the 8920 that have processors that support Intel VT (ie. T7500, T9500, etc.). I want to, again, upgrade to a machine that has a processor that I need... but I love the Aspire 8920 too much so I think I'm just going to get one of those higher configurations. However, there is a little problem. Intel VT comes turned off by default. The only way for it to be turned on is in the BIOS. I've read in several forums that a few manufacturers are either forgetting to add this BIOS setting or just not doing it at all.

Question 1) To anyone reading this who has an Aspire 8920 with a processor that supports Intel VT (Find out if your processor has VT support):
a) What processor do you have?
b) Do you know what configuration of the Aspire 8920 you have (ie. 8920-6671)?
c) Can you confirm if there is a "Virtualization" or "VT" setting in the BIOS?

Question 2) To anyone reading this that does a lot of virtualizing on their Aspire 8920:
a) What virtualization software are you using?
b) What guest OSs are you running and what are you using them for?
c) Do the VMs run well for you?

Question 3) Since were somewhat on the topic, is there anyone that has some experience with Hyper-V and virtualization under Windows Server 2008; and if so, what are you personal opinions on it compared to other virtualization solutions out there?

Acer :: Discovered 8920 Fingerprint Reader

Sep 19, 2008

I've found what's wrong with the fingerprint reader on the 8920/6920 after a vista reinstall, but I don't know how to change/fix it.

Basically it's upside down -
If you swipe fingers as normal, you have the issue of multiple swipes to login, cannot register fingers and constant misread/misswipe indicators.

If you swipe your finger towards the screen (ie backwards) or push it up the reader towards the screen, it works perfectly. 3 swipes to register again and log in first time every time.

I tested this over the last week and with the fiingernav test, and this shows the same - up goes scrolls down and down scrolls up.

Short of completely dismantling the machine and turning the module around I can't see how to fix it.

Acer :: 9500M GS Aspire 8920/6920 Games Minimizing On Start

Nov 11, 2008

I have a curious issue that has begun to pop up, I believe after I installed a few drivers from laptopvideo2go. Long story short I tried to reset back to the old Acer drivers and I spent a few hours trying to get my video to turn back on.

But here's the actual problem - some games will randomly minimize on startup and then not allow me to switch to them.

I first noticed this with Frets on Fire, where I would boot it up, it would look like it would work and then stay minimized for a while. Click on it in the taskbar and it would either pretend to go to the game or just sit there, moving my mouse to the top left corner. Alt-Tab, similar, sometimes works sometimes doesn't. If I do Switch To in task manager, it works a bit more often but sometimes takes a few times.

I've now noticed this with COD4, Fallout 3, and Trackmania Nations. Fallout 3 causes the game to crash. I've tried stopping as many open programs/processes as possible and it sometimes fixes it, sometimes doesn't.

If it isn't clear, I have an Acer Aspire 8920G with a 9500M GS. I'm currently using the relatively stock 7.15.1(1.7561) drivers.

Acer :: 1410 SU2300 Benchmarks With RAM & HDD Upgrades

Feb 23, 2010

After getting my new 1410, I was interested in finding out just how much a hard drive and RAM upgrade would help. I have a 1410 SU2300 which came with 2 1GB DDR2 Dual Channel 667 Mhz 5-5-5-15 RAM modules and a 160GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. I made a list of fairly well known benchmarks, and ran them with various configurations using upgraded RAM (2 2GB DDR2 Dual Channel 800 Mhz 6-6-6-18 Corsair) and HDD (320GB Seagate Momentus 7200.4).

For testing, I wiped the drive, installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, and applied all the tweaks in the 1410 thread, including installing BatteryBar, RMClock, and a few programs of my own like Office 2007 and Dropbox along with the latest drivers for every component and all of the latest MS updates. Then, I installed the following programs for benchmarking:

PCMark Vantage x64 Professional - Overall performance indicator, provides scores for various areas of computer usage. Instead of running synthetic benchmarks, it runs scripts using standard Windows programs like Media Player and Internet explorer. Accurate and popular with repeatable results; probably my favorite benchmark.
PCMark Vantage x86 Professional - Same as x64 version, shown for 32 bit comparison – can only address 3.5gb of the 4.0 installed
Passmark Performance Test 7 – Synthetic overall benchmark, could not be completely run due to directX issues. Not very repeatable or accurate, I personally dislike it.
IOMeter – Hard drive benchmark, sends repeated IO requests and measures operations completed per second in various configurations. Reasonably repeatable, very accurate, much better at providing an overall performance indicator then synthetic sequential readwrite HDD benchmarks.
Everest Ultimate – Memory, CPU, and HDD benchmarking options. Not very repeatable or reliable.

Geekbench x86 – Memory & CPU benchmark. Somewhat repeatable, fairly inaccurate.

Geekbench x64 - Same as x86 version, allows for comparison between x86x64.

Crystal Disk Mark – HDD benchmarking program using various file sizes. Results given in MBs. Very accurate and repeatable, my favorite sequential readwrite testing program. Used 9 pass 1GB file settings.

3dMark 06 (3dMark Vantage couldn’t run) – 3d graphicsCPU benchmarking program. Repeatable, reliable, accepted standard.

HD Tune Pro – HDD benchmark, requires a non-window partition for write tests. Fairly repeatable and reliable, another ‘staple’ benchmark......................

Acer :: Aspire 5580 CPU/memory Upgrades

Sep 18, 2007

I just bought a 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 dual channel memory kit; that should be a relatively simple upgrade.

I want to eventually upgrade the CPU to the T7600, which is 677 MHz. The intel 945GM chipset should support that, but is it just a matter of dropping in the new CPU? Or are there changes to be made on the motherboard (jumpers, etc)? There doesn't seem to be any such setting options in the BIOS.

Acer Aspire V3-571G :: BIOS Update (Not For Upgrades)

Oct 9, 2014

I own an Aspire V3-571G Notebook with ArchLinux dual-booting Win8.1. When I'm starting Arch I get this (Ivybridge-/Sandybridge -related) error:

"[drm:cpt_serr_int_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun"

After research I think a BIOS Update should fix the problem. But in the BIOS-section there is a confusing line:
"BIOS - UEFI for Windows 8 (Not for Upgrades)"

So, does that mean:
a) not for those who had Win8/8.1 pre-installed (like me) or
b) not for those who have run an inplace upgrade of Win7 to Win8/8.1 instead of a clean install.
