Apple :: 2.66 Core I7 15" Macbook Pro Battery Tests

Apr 18, 2010

I just got a new Macbook Pro and wanted to share my battery life experience with you:

- Safari open with 5-6 tabs, WiFi on, Bluetooth on, full brightness, just browsing random websites + youtube = 5h:18m

- iTunes playing in the background, Safari with same random websites open, about 60% brightness = 6h:09m

So far the display eats up a lot of battery life.

- Watching HD YouTube (I was watching the Home Project), 100% brightness: 4h:41m, 60% brightness: 5h:23m.

- SD video with Quicktime: 5h:10m with 100% brightness
- HD video with Quicktime: 4h:38m with 100% brightness

Playing the Sims3 with everything max details (1440x900 resolution on OS X) and 100% brightness: 2h:58m (wifi on bluetooth on)......

Apple :: Macbook Pro Core I7 & Paralells Desktop Gaming

Apr 18, 2010

new Macbook Pro 15 w/Core i7 and I was wondering how gaming performance is with Paralells Desktop 5? I really don't want to do boot camp, if at all possible, but do want decent gaming performance. I will be using Fusion for all of my work-related VM's but my main Windows 7 VM will be under Paralells Desktop.

Will I get comparable gaming performance with Paralells or should I stick with boot camp?

Apple :: MacBook Pro 17" (Core I7-620M + GT330M) And RAM Speed

Apr 26, 2010

I've finally got my MacBook Pro 17" specced with Glossy screen, Core i7-620M and GeForce GT330M fully up and running!

I've been replacing the 5400RPM 500GB hard drive with a Intel X25-M 80GB Gen2, along with replaced the 2x 2GB 1066MHz RAM with a pair of nice Kingston 1600MHz @ CL7 2x 2GB ones.

is the fact that Windows7 computer rating tells me that my RAM is the slowest hardware in my machine? So I was checking it's settings, and the MacBook Pro keeps them at 1066MHz @ CL8?

Which is insane considering the potential of these Kingston memory modules!
Is there no way (as there obviously is no BIOS to deal with on Mac hardware) to somehow improve the memory settings?

Apple :: Core I7-equipped MacBook Pro Hits 100 Degrees Celsius

Apr 26, 2010

"Hydrocarbon fuel cell? 600 degrees Celsius. Large Hadron Collider? -271 degrees. Microwave drill? 2,000. Your run of the mill Core i7 MacBook Pro can't compete with these extreme temperatures, but that won't keep it from burning your lap. PC Authority recently put the latest edition of Apple's sleek silver classic through a series of torture tests, and found that running Cinebench could cause the CPU temperature to climb over 100 degrees Celsius. The metal shell proved ineffective at dissipating the heat as well as the similarly equipped Fujitsu Lifebook SH760, which finished the same test at 81 degrees, and actually required PC Authority to run the MacBook Pro on its side (see pic above) to complete certain tests. The site thinks that Apple's cooling solution may be inadequate for a Core i7, but these results could be a fluke -- in our experience with the machine, we actually noticed an improvement over the egg-cooking solutions of yesteryear."

Apple :: MacBook Pro 17" (Core I5-540M) And Windows7 Drivers

Apr 20, 2010

I'm about to receive my very first MacBook, and I will be using BootCamp in order to have both Mac OSX and Windows7 on it at once.

I've always been one of the first one to jump right upon new driver releases etc.. I always keep my eyes open, watch Station-drivers.com every day and things like that.

Now there is one thing nagging me, where do I actually get Windows drivers for the MacBook Pro? Do I need to get Windows7 on it in order to run something like Everest to identify the hardware specifics?

Wont really be any problems with either the graphics card, CPU (turbo boost) or chipset as the MacBook uses the same HM55 (or PM55) chipset like every other i5 / i7 based notebook out there, same goes for the graphics card and the turbo boost feature of the CPU.

What I don't know is where to figure what drivers to use for the iSight webcam, nor the touchpad? I don't even know what company who have manufactured them?

Is there some sort of drivers list for the MacBook Pro? Or do everyone just relay on the standard Windows7 drivers? (tend to hate those drivers, also like some up-to-date dedicated drivers right from the manufacture of the different pieces of hardware in the machine!)

Intel Claims Core i5-Based MacBook Pro Promotion a Marketing Error

Quote:

Spanish site faq-mac.com, which was first to note an Intel promotion yesterday apparently revealing at least one forthcoming MacBook Pro based on the company's new Core i5 processors, now reports [Google translation] that Intel has revised the promotion to offer HP Envy notebooks instead of MacBook Pros, blaming a marketing error for the incorrect promotional materials. Apple :: Macbook Nonremovable Battery And Battery Wear

Jun 12, 2009

I am looking into getting one of the new macbook pro's. Though I must say the non removable battery does concern me a bit. In past laptops I have had, I without a doubt saw increased battery wear and tear when I left the batter in the laptop while the laptop itself was plugged in. I completly destroyed a battery on my Dell laptop by doing this for about a month when it was asking as a desktop. I took the laptop which used to get around 4 hrs of battery life and then after a month it got no more than 15 minutes.

So after that I always took the battery out, so now with the new macbook pro's you cannot take the batteries out, so wont the batteries wear down to nothing faster than if you took them out when not using them?

Apple :: Battery Leaks On Macbook

Oct 21, 2009

I use my macbook a lot lately without connecting it to a power outlet. I disconnect it from power supple in the morning and put it in my backpack, and after 3 hours I waked it up by opening the lid and I notice the battery is at 95%. The battery is pretty much out of power after about 4 hours of use with airport on for wireless connection, and at the lowest brightness. Is it possible there is a battery leak, or is this normal? The battery is at 99% health and 40 cycles. It was went down to 96% health before, and it came back to 99% after I calibrated the battery.

Apple :: Macbook Pro Battery Life

Jul 11, 2009

I have a Macbook Pro I bought in summer 2007, and I'm have concerns about its battery life, and so I was wondering if anyone could help me please.

I hardly ever use my laptop away from my desk, so it's plugged in all the time. While plugged in, I still keep the battery in the laptop. It's only been through 10 cycles in 2 years, and I know I should've calibrated it monthly, but I didn't and I really wish I had now. Right now, when unplugged, my battery only lasts about half an hour. I downloaded coconutBattery and apparently, my original battery capacity was 5600 mAh, and now it's only 543 mAh.

My question is, did I mess up the battery myself by not calibrating it, or was the battery defective in the first place? :S Or is it just old?

I'm a real n00b when it comes to computers....but if this ISN'T my fault, the laptop is under an Apple Care Protection Plan, and so would that cover the battery? Is there any way to fix it without getting a new battery?

I found that my battery health is unstable, sometime it said 97%, 98%, 99% and 100%. I thought this was normal.

But today, I turn the dashboard on and istat pro said 35% battery health.

Should I go to a apple store and ask them for a battery replacement?

Apple :: Macbook Battery Indicator

i've just purchased a 2.0GHZ aluminum macbook recently and am having a small problem with it. The macbooks battery percentage indicator seems to be dropping a percentage point every couple of days even though i'm on mains power? The power adaptor LED is green idicating the computer is fully charged. I've calibrated the battery as apple recommended but its still doing it. The apple tech guy said that it is possibly a 'power board' problem rather than a battery fault and it will need changing. Has anybody else experienced this problem? Other than this small problem the macbook is fantastic, should have coverted over from a pc years ago

Apple :: Upgrades And Macbook Battery Life

Aug 7, 2009

As a new 13" Macbook Pro owner, I am wondering if upgrading with non-Apple certified HDD and RAM components could drastically effect the battery life.

I am told that there is firmware in the HDD of the one that comes with a Macbook that is necessary for maximum battery life. From comparing two HDD's in my Macbook (one certified and one not) I think this might be the case. What is your experience?

Also, does there exist Apple certified RAM and, if so, does it offer more battery life compared to non-certified?

Anyways the only thing that I really think I missed out on is the new 7 hour battery (the one previously in the 17")...battery life is important to me.

What I want to know is will the new battery work with my 15" macbook pro?

I've always been a Mac fan and am quite impressed with today's update. I recently purchased 2 new 13" Macbook's a few months ago for my mother and myself. The only complaint we both have is the horrible 2.3-3 hour battery life, instead of selling our lovely investments do you think we can pay to have the new built-in battery placed into the system or should we sell and repurchase? I understand the new systems have quite a few new hardware updates but that's all irrelevant, we just want that new sleek battery life!

We also want the new iPhone 3GS. Grr Apple, you always know how to do it right.

Apple :: New 15 MacBook Pro - Should I Unplug It When The Battery Is Full

Jan 9, 2009

I've been working with the new MacBook Pro for two weeks and I've found the battery life impressive. It let me work the whole morning (around five hours with a couple of ten minutes breaks, with wireless and half bright). I'd like to maintain this performance as longer as possible,

question is:

1. When I get back home I usually plug in the laptop to electricity to recharge the battery while I keep working in the afternoon for several hours, should I unplug it when the battery is full? Is a good thing to keep the laptop always plugged in?

My second question has to do with the fact that I'm a bit distracted, then,

2. Does this laptop have any way to let me know that there are, for instance, only ten minutes left before it go to sleep? (an acustic signal, a warning...)

Apple :: Unibody Macbook Battery And Charging Time

Jan 21, 2009

Two questions:

1) Is it normal for the battery to take several hours, i.e. 4+, to fully charge after being mostly depleted? For example, my battery says it's like 95% charged, yet has 40 minutes to go.

2) Is it normal for the battery time-left indicator to jump all over? When I run it on battery, the amount of time remaining constantly changes. It goes from 5 hours to 3 hours to 4 hours, etc, etc.

The first time I ever used the computer when I got it in December I charged it up fully, kept it plugged in for several hours, then let it completely die out overnight and fully charged it again.

what the battery life of the new(er) unibody macbook pro 17 was like under windows. I read a review somewhere that says the new macbook pro (the one with advertised 8hours battery life) managed about 1 1/2 hours in windows, is this true? the only reason I'm looking at the 17inch pro is because I program a lot in Windows and Linux, and 17inchs would be fantastic to display more code, but I still need good battery life. portability is no issue, as I'm a big guy and I carry 2 computers with me right now anyway. any other cons to installing windows on this beast?
