Apple :: Macbook Pro Core I7 & Paralells Desktop Gaming
Apr 18, 2010
new Macbook Pro 15 w/Core i7 and I was wondering how gaming performance is with Paralells Desktop 5? I really don't want to do boot camp, if at all possible, but do want decent gaming performance. I will be using Fusion for all of my work-related VM's but my main Windows 7 VM will be under Paralells Desktop.
Will I get comparable gaming performance with Paralells or should I stick with boot camp?

Some times when I completely turn off my MacBook and turn it back on I loose my desktop images (I have them changing every 30 minutes) and the screen is just a soft blue. When I double tap and go to change desktop background, it is still pointed to the right folder and all the setting are right so I dunno what is happening.

I just have one more question before I pull the trigger. Originally, I was looking to buy a new computer whether it was a laptop or a desktop. At first, my eyes were on a Vaio Z (P8700, 4 gigs, etc.....), Macbook Pro...etc...
The reason that got me to change to desktop is its performance numbers on paper. I already have a laptop so the new computer can either be desktop or laptop. In all seriousness, how much of a "day-to-day" performance boost will I notice by going with the desktop? (a noticeable enough performance to make me say..."wow it was really worth it to go with a desktop"? Day to day activities include opening many many windows including browsers, word/powerpoint, msn, movies, etc. Some more demanding applications will include photoshop/lightroom and some games.
By talking to a lot of people on forums, they keep on saying that for day to day operations, I won't notice any difference (I want the most smoothest experience, opening/alternating windows...which I am not getting with my laptop at the moment). Even for these small day to day applications, will I notice a difference in this desktop against one of the latest laptops? Honestly, gaming is important but not the deciding factor here.
I was also thinking of getting a premium laptop and then buying a Samsung HD240 as an external monitor but people said it will put great stress on my laptop (overheating issues...)

For some reason. Norton Antivirus on my MacBook Pro is saying that about every ten minutes I'm getting a "portscan attack" from the IP address of my Dell desktop. Anybody have any idea how to solve this?

I just tried bootcamp and installed the latest nvidia mobile drivers for my Macbook alu. When I tried playing UT3 (which runs pretty ok to my surprise) within minutes the Macbook got very hot (especially around the area where power is plugged in). Is this normal? Fan started blowing pretty hard within minutes too.

I was thinking about purchasing a unibody macbook and was wondering how they are for gaming. I am not talking about crisis or anything like that on them... but maybe Team Fortress 2, Warcraft 3, and a little WoW. How do you guys think the 9400m would handle those (I would be getting the 2.4 GHz CPU).

I just recieved my refurbished 17" Macbook pro yesterday and love it. It looks just like new to me and is built like a tank. I have more of an observation than a question, that i would like to say.
I have been reading posts on this board as well as others about heat related issues when playing GPU intensive games like COD and WOW. I am a MAC newbie coming from Windows based laptops that i have used for years. The last windows laptop I used for several months and gave to my youngest son was a Gateway FX-7811 which is a gaming laptop. It has a 9800 GT 512MEG card and builds up heat fast. What I am trying to say is I would never ever ever use a laptop for gaming WITHOUT using a laptop cooler first. your laptop needs the ventilation and airflow to cool it . I am amazed how many post I have read where users are apparently using their laptop without one.

Looking to do some light gaming on a 13" macbook pro, I have played team fortress 2 on a mac mini at low res and with a FPS config, but was wondering if the boost in specs, native widescreen would make a difference?
I am getting a gaming laptop seperate, this would be as a backup or if I am without gaming laptop (leave it at home, etc).

I am pretty much deciding between keeping my macbook pro (in sig) and upgrading to an imac 24" with the ati 4850. With student discount it would cost me 1879 + tax. I just dont know if its worth it for me. Most all the pc games i own can be maxed on the pro,Save for world in conflict, crysis, and some others (about 5). My 360 gets most of my gaming time anyway. I just am thinking that it would be great to have the extra power in the 4850 for some of my current titles and having power for future titles would be nice. Also who couldnt use more speed for final cut express and such.
One game that annoys me on my macbook pro is Unreal 3. It is an amazingly graphical game. The new patch enables comprehesive settings adjustment. The thing that bothers me is that I can max it but fps drops by 65% on the water level. I want a card that wont have problems like this. Im not expecting wonders with the 4850, i would still use the modpacks for crysis, and run WiC in DX9.
However am i just missusing the macbook pro? What windows operating system runs smoothest on it? I have tried xp 32 bit and noticed some glitches with the led keyboard and such. Would 64 bit be the better option? Would upgrading the ram help at all? Im pretty convinced it wouldnt because as for vram i got double the ram compared to most people with the macbook pro, and still notice about the exact same performace. Also drivers? I never even touched or looked at the drivers? How do install drivers on a mac? Do i just go to nvidia's site on windows? If i erase the bootcamp partiiton will it delete the drivers? Will it conflict with leopard?

I'm looking to buy a new machine in the coming weeks and was considoring the
Macbook Pro.
I usually game in the evenings and need something that can play games like
CSS and HL2 which the Macbook Pro's GPU should be able to handle fine.
After doing tons of readinging though, I've read that playing games in via
Bootcamp isn't very stable as the Macbook Pro starts to overheat a lot.
This is due to Apple not offering any drivers that control the fan speed when
running Windows.

I just sold my old black macbook on eBay. Lo and behold, an opportunity presents itself in the form of the Aluminum Macbook in the NBR Marketplace.
Anyway, how does the 9400m compare to the 9300ms that is in the Asus N10J?
I already have a Clevo laptop for gaming, this would strictly be for ultaportability and perhaps some gaming while on the road for clients.

I just got a new Macbook Pro and wanted to share my battery life experience with you:
- Safari open with 5-6 tabs, WiFi on, Bluetooth on, full brightness, just browsing random websites + youtube = 5h:18m
- iTunes playing in the background, Safari with same random websites open, about 60% brightness = 6h:09m
So far the display eats up a lot of battery life.
- Watching HD YouTube (I was watching the Home Project), 100% brightness: 4h:41m, 60% brightness: 5h:23m.
- SD video with Quicktime: 5h:10m with 100% brightness
- HD video with Quicktime: 4h:38m with 100% brightness
Playing the Sims3 with everything max details (1440x900 resolution on OS X) and 100% brightness: 2h:58m (wifi on bluetooth on)......

I've finally got my MacBook Pro 17" specced with Glossy screen, Core i7-620M and GeForce GT330M fully up and running!
I've been replacing the 5400RPM 500GB hard drive with a Intel X25-M 80GB Gen2, along with replaced the 2x 2GB 1066MHz RAM with a pair of nice Kingston 1600MHz @ CL7 2x 2GB ones.
is the fact that Windows7 computer rating tells me that my RAM is the slowest hardware in my machine? So I was checking it's settings, and the MacBook Pro keeps them at 1066MHz @ CL8?
Which is insane considering the potential of these Kingston memory modules!
Is there no way (as there obviously is no BIOS to deal with on Mac hardware) to somehow improve the memory settings?

"Hydrocarbon fuel cell? 600 degrees Celsius. Large Hadron Collider? -271 degrees. Microwave drill? 2,000. Your run of the mill Core i7 MacBook Pro can't compete with these extreme temperatures, but that won't keep it from burning your lap. PC Authority recently put the latest edition of Apple's sleek silver classic through a series of torture tests, and found that running Cinebench could cause the CPU temperature to climb over 100 degrees Celsius. The metal shell proved ineffective at dissipating the heat as well as the similarly equipped Fujitsu Lifebook SH760, which finished the same test at 81 degrees, and actually required PC Authority to run the MacBook Pro on its side (see pic above) to complete certain tests. The site thinks that Apple's cooling solution may be inadequate for a Core i7, but these results could be a fluke -- in our experience with the machine, we actually noticed an improvement over the egg-cooking solutions of yesteryear."

I'm about to receive my very first MacBook, and I will be using BootCamp in order to have both Mac OSX and Windows7 on it at once.
I've always been one of the first one to jump right upon new driver releases etc.. I always keep my eyes open, watch Station-drivers.com every day and things like that.
Now there is one thing nagging me, where do I actually get Windows drivers for the MacBook Pro? Do I need to get Windows7 on it in order to run something like Everest to identify the hardware specifics?
Wont really be any problems with either the graphics card, CPU (turbo boost) or chipset as the MacBook uses the same HM55 (or PM55) chipset like every other i5 / i7 based notebook out there, same goes for the graphics card and the turbo boost feature of the CPU.
What I don't know is where to figure what drivers to use for the iSight webcam, nor the touchpad? I don't even know what company who have manufactured them?
Is there some sort of drivers list for the MacBook Pro? Or do everyone just relay on the standard Windows7 drivers? (tend to hate those drivers, also like some up-to-date dedicated drivers right from the manufacture of the different pieces of hardware in the machine!)

Intel Claims Core i5-Based MacBook Pro Promotion a Marketing Error

Spanish site faq-mac.com, which was first to note an Intel promotion yesterday apparently revealing at least one forthcoming MacBook Pro based on the company's new Core i5 processors, now reports [Google translation] that Intel has revised the promotion to offer HP Envy notebooks instead of MacBook Pros, blaming a marketing error for the incorrect promotional materials. Just purchased a 1555 with the radeon 4570 512mb GPU, Windows 7 64-bit, and performance is generally very good apart from one strange result. Windows experience index reports the following -
Processor - 5.7
Memory - 5.8
Graphics - 4.9
Gaming Graphics - 6.3
hard disk - 5.9
So the only low result is the desktop aero graphics performance at 4.9, which seems strange when the 3D businnes/gaming graphics score is 6.3. Other results i've seen posted on forums of the Windows 7 WEI scores are usually the same for desktop graphics and 3D graphics in Windows 7, which I would have expected as I understood that aero uses the GPU similarly to games. If anything, it looked like in most results the desktop graphics scores were slightly higher than the gaming graphics scores.
Does anyone know why I could be getting a lot lower desktop graphics score compared to gaming graphics?
I've checked the graphics drivers are up to date.
Can anybody else post their Windows 7 WEI scores from the 1555 with the 4570 512mb GPU?

I have the Pavilion g7-2235dx with Windows 8.1 operating system. Nearly every automatic update messes up my ability to get on the internet. The only way I can connect is to uninstall all of the updates. The icons on my desktop also stopped working. When I click on them, it goes right back to desktop. Can't pin them to the taskbar either. The ones on the taskbar won't open by clicking on them either. Have to right click and tell it to open. Also problem getting my Norton anti-virus to open. Says it working but can't open it.

Noticed the 20" Cinema is off the website AND the configurator for the Mac Pro...looks like a cinema refresh is coming VERY soon...how can they sell a Mac Pro with no choice of monitor besides the 30"...maybe next week?
Also decided I'm going to buy a Mac Pro to accompany the macbook pro. Gonna go with the monitor I have now..or the 27 inch Dell...then adjust later if a great cinema comes out. This way with Dell I can connect MBPRO, Mac Pro, AND my XPS desktop to one good display.
My question is are the NEW cinemas going to somehow connect to the mac pro desktop?
Display port video cards?

I just recieved a new Alienware desktop which gives me everything I need in terms of a desktop windows setup. However I also have the 24" ultrasharp which has MANY inputs, so I was thinking of creating a desktop type setup with the macbook pro.
Here is what I was thinking I'd need:
1) DVI-D cable (is VGA good enough?)
2) laptop stand
3) bluetooth keyboard/mighty mouse
I should be able to run the 1900 x 1200 as an extended desktop or as people said if I shut the top it should run like a full out desktop correct?

I had a folder on my desktop and yesterday it disappeared. I also had some files in a folder "untitled folder" with some numbers after the "untitled folder" and, although I was able to save files to it, I can't find it on the hard drive.
I've had my Mac for a few months (and love it) but there are still so many things that I haven't figured out. On Windows you can "restore" the computer to a former date and have things just the way they were on that date.
Is that possible with OSX? It's not a disaster. Nothing critical lost (I hope) but I'm wondering what happened and what I might have done to "lose" those folders.

Is there anyway to display/embed text on the Mac desktop, either off of a text file or just punching it into a menu or something, in any font I want? (I did notice Geektool, but it seems like I can't adjust the font, and it's out of date - not for Leopard).
I just want to be able to display like a daily 'motto' or something on it.
