I have 2 computers at home: the Macbook Pro and a desktop. I was thinking of getting an Airport Extreme router... I want to be able to access the hard disk of the desktop, from the Macbook. Can Airport Extreme do that?
View 9 RepliesI work with my mac (Macbook Unibody Late 2008) and my buddy with his crappy netbook running Windows XP. It seems that his netbook is able to find significally more wireless networks than I can get with my airport card. The networks we both can find, his netbook always has a FAR better signal than what my Macbook and pull. Can anybody let me know if theres some kind of issue with my airport card or is there something i dont know about with wireless networks....

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had WiFi with my trusty AirPort Extreme...until I installed AirPort Express. Now I have a whopping nothing!
AirPort Express keeps blinking the amber light of death (with internet connected), and will not transmit a signal. {Yes I have troubleshooted this thing over and over again to no avail}.
I have also switched the internet cable back over to my trusty AirPort Extreme, which will give me a green light, which promptly throws my network name into the list of available networks, but there is no signal strength displayed (in bars) and the Mac cannot connect to it.
I hope someone out there in MacLand might have a possible solution before both of these non-working airport devices find themselves flying out the window!
I setup the dual band Airport extreme station a few weeks ago and my Macbooks Pros have been working no problems. Blazing speeds.
When it comes to my 2 desktop PCs, though, a lot of problems.
My one PC connects and says it is connected, but the internet does not work. The page does not display at all.
My other PC (which Im on right now), also connects, but only Firefox works. IE does not display the page. I think FIrefox does work on both PCs, I just dont have it installed on the first one to verify.
What is going on? Even my iphone works flawlessly.
bought the newest airport extreme after my DIR-655 modem crapped out on me. I was surprised to see that the touted feature of MIMO is not supported by any of the current Macs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got my Airport Extreme router, and I set up a wireless network easily. However, it doesn't cover the whole house.
So I have another router (Asus WL-530G) and I am thinking of using either of the two routers as a base and the other one as an extender.
I have tried extending the Asus network with the Airport.I got this message:"The network you selected cannot be extended"
I tried setting up a WDS network with Airport Extreme as main, remote or relay. None worked, it said no other apple airport device can be found.
Is this a compatibility issue, or did i miss something?
I have BootCamp configured and my HD is partitioned into two. In Leopard, I display the Hard disk icons on the desktop, but now I have the Windows hard disk too, which is annoying. I never use it and it's annoying. If I go to the finder settings and turn off the "display hard disk" setting, all my HD icons disappear, even the Macintosh HD one. How can I remove only one HD icon (the Windows HD)?

View 7 Replies View Relatedmy girlfriend just bought the airport express and is having trouble setting it up. She said she hooked up the express to the wall and connected it to her dsl modem and then connected the modem to the ethrenet port in the wall. After install AirPort utility on hermacbookshe tried setting up the express but it can't find it. The express has a flash orange light and I read the manual and it says it can't establish a network connection. We've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in and tried multiple ethrenet cords but it still doesn't work.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOn my macbook I noted that when I just switch the airport ON, in order to search for some WIFI networks, the macbook completely freezes if I have the 3G usb already connected to internet.
This happens also if the 3G pen is only searching the 3G network (after being plugged) and then I switch the airport ON.
Why does this happen?

Some times when I completely turn off my MacBook and turn it back on I loose my desktop images (I have them changing every 30 minutes) and the screen is just a soft blue. When I double tap and go to change desktop background, it is still pointed to the right folder and all the setting are right so I dunno what is happening.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just have one more question before I pull the trigger. Originally, I was looking to buy a new computer whether it was a laptop or a desktop. At first, my eyes were on a Vaio Z (P8700, 4 gigs, etc.....), Macbook Pro...etc...
The reason that got me to change to desktop is its performance numbers on paper. I already have a laptop so the new computer can either be desktop or laptop. In all seriousness, how much of a "day-to-day" performance boost will I notice by going with the desktop? (a noticeable enough performance to make me say..."wow it was really worth it to go with a desktop"? Day to day activities include opening many many windows including browsers, word/powerpoint, msn, movies, etc. Some more demanding applications will include photoshop/lightroom and some games.
By talking to a lot of people on forums, they keep on saying that for day to day operations, I won't notice any difference (I want the most smoothest experience, opening/alternating windows...which I am not getting with my laptop at the moment). Even for these small day to day applications, will I notice a difference in this desktop against one of the latest laptops? Honestly, gaming is important but not the deciding factor here.
I was also thinking of getting a premium laptop and then buying a Samsung HD240 as an external monitor but people said it will put great stress on my laptop (overheating issues...)
For some reason. Norton Antivirus on my MacBook Pro is saying that about every ten minutes I'm getting a "portscan attack" from the IP address of my Dell desktop. Anybody have any idea how to solve this?

I really don't want to do boot camp, if at all possible, but do want decent gaming performance. I will be using Fusion for all of my work-related VM's but my main Windows 7 VM will be under Paralells Desktop.

If I make an image of my hdd from my white macbook with disk utility onto a hard drive I take out of a unibody macbook pro will it work and boot properly?
I will do this by taking the 250gb hdd out of the unibody macbook pro and putting it into a sata external usb hdd enclosure, then making an image of my current 120gb white macbook and writing the image onto the 250gb. After, I plan to put the 250gb hdd back into the macbook pro and boot it up normally as if everything from my white macbook was just copied onto the macbook pro.

Only thing which shows up on the desktop is the recycle bin.
The Vista theme is changed to classic and I can't get it back.

I can't open the control panel (in safe mode I can, but not all of the icons are there that should be there)
In the task manager there's only 4 processes running:
eplorer.exe csrss.exe taskmgr.exe (of course) and winlogo.exe
I think I can open all of my programs that I got installed, but basically I almost can't do anything else.
I've been trying to use system restore, but even in safe mode it won't open.
Unfortunately the internal keyboard and mouse on my MBP seem to have packed up for good. Fortunately, I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse.
Is there any way I can copy the entire contents of the hard disk onto an external USB hard disk (everything so that I don't lose desktop icons, filing structure e.t.c.) and then restore it when I get a new machine?
I am selling my 160gb hitachi hdd that came with my alubook. thinking of upgrading to another hitachi drive, either the 320gb 5k500.b or 320gb 7k320 drive. what are your thoughts? i want performance but at the same time a very quiet and cool operating drive. anyway, how do i wipe my current hard disk clean before i sell it off? the next owner is also a mac user. is there any particular thing i need to do so he wont have problems installing os x? also, what do i do to load os x to my new hard disk? i know i need to run the installer from the dvd. do i need to format it first? if so, how? and..is there a way i can clone my current hard disk instead of going thru the hassle of reinstalling everything?

I currently have everything I ever need on one laptop -- a mid-2009 15" MBP. Having had a slew of hard drive problems over the past few years, and given that such disks are regularly the source of problems (before, say, a logic board), I'm considering purchasing a spare hard drive and keeping it, or the one in my machine, as a backup disk for the day when my current drive dies. The closest Apple store is ~45 minutes away, and I'm perfectly capable of doing my own computer surgery. An inoperable laptop would be a pretty significant problem for me.
So basically, my questions are twofold:
- From perusing the hard drive threads a few months back here in the Apple forum, it seems like WD's Scorpio Blue (500 GB, 5400 RPM) is the popular choice. Given the time that's elapsed since its release (and the thinning of hard drive threads after the last "big one" I found), are there any other drives, SSD or standard, that can beat it in terms of power usage / noise / performance overall without gouging the bill too much?
- I use Time Machine with a Time Capsule to keep everything nice and backed up, but an HD/SSD swap would be best done with an image of my entire drive. Is Carbon Copy Cloner still the go-to for that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have had my 13"mbp for a few months now, and recently the internet just stops working, nothing comes up nothing disconnects, websites will just continue to say "loading" and eventually brings up the failed to open page, if I disconnect my airport and reconnect it works fine it has started to do this more and more now and usually ranges from about 5-15 minutes. One night I got extremely pissed off as it did it every 5 minutes for 1/2 an hour or so. Every now and then it will work fine for an hour or two of surfing the internet. I am pretty sure it is something with my airport and my wireless router. I have used other wireless routers and not once have I had this problem, and while I am surfing my gf can use the internet on her computer or i phone without being disconnected its just me. I have tried reseting my router and that did nothing. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do or if there is something I can check, it is an older extreme wireless G dlink router.
