Apple :: Dual Boot Ubuntu With MacBook
Apr 30, 2009
Im having problems trying to find a decent guide on how to do this,(Most of them are outdated and what not) but I want to have the ability to use Ubuntu and OSX.
I currently have Ubuntu in Virtual Box, but I would like for my whole system to be able to switch from OSX and Ubuntu and boot or w/e.
Also, I have Ubuntu saved on my external HD iso file. So will I need to actually burn it to disk?
I also read that you can use bootcamp to do this.
So whats the easiest way to do this without having to reinstall osx(if I really dont have to)

On the new MBP's, if you are running dual boot XP, what video core is the MBP using? The 9400 or 9600? Is there a way to swap while in XP?

how to guide for dual tri or quad boot linux with xp vista or 7 or all 3
Ubuntu is available as a "live" CD, which means that you can use it directly from the CD without installing it. But running an operating system from a CD is slow, to see what Ubuntu can do running at full speed, you need to install it to your hard disk.
The ideal situation would be to install Ubuntu on it's own separate hard disk, but most people don't have two hard drives in their computer, and most people are not prepared to give up Windows. Therefore they have to install Ubuntu along-side Windows on the same hard disk in a dual-boot configuration.
Configuring a dual-boot system involves partitioning your hard disk to make space for Ubuntu. When your computer first starts, it reads information on the first sector of the hard drive which tells it where to find the "boot loader". The boot loader is a file with information about the installed operating systems and how to start them.
The boot loader for Windows is a file named "boot.ini". The boot loader for a Linux system (like Ubuntu) is GRUB (Grand Unified Boot Loader). When you install Ubuntu in a dual-boot system, it redirects the system to use GRUB. When you first start your system, GRUB presents a list of options, including starting Ubuntu or starting Windows. So you'll still be able to use your Windows operating system.
To install Ubuntu, start it with the live CD. To use the live CD, your computer's BIOS must be configured to boot from the CD drive. It's probably already configured that way, but if not, when your computer first starts watch for a message telling you which key to press to access the BIOS setup. Most computers use the F2, F1, Esc, or Del key.........

I am having some trouble with my Unibody Macbook. Like a week ago, I began to have issues with my Macbook where after being booted up for a while programs would close and new ones would not open, and I would have to reboot. To me this sounded like a memory issue where there was a bad sector on the memory that was randomly used, which is why there was no pattern to when this problem would show up. It could have started at boot up or after hours of using the computer. It worked like that for a couple of days, and since I decided that it was probably the memory, I would just by 4 gigs of memory to replace these bad ones because I was planning on doing it sooner or later, it just gave me an excuse to do it. Then over the weekend, my mac would no longer boot up. It chimes, and gets to the gray apple boot up screen and then just spins for a while until it turns off. I just put the new 4 gigs in there and that did not fix my problem. Also, for something that it did last week for a couple times, is that when it booted up it would do 3 beeps, which I was told meant a memory issue. I would really like to get this fixed without having to re install the OS or going to the Apple Store.

I just got a new MacBook Pro and installed Windows 7 via Boot Camp. I updated the system completely both in OS X and Windows (so I have Boot Camp 3.1 drivers). Yet, it's pretty much unusable except for surfing the web. If I try to play a video back, it gets extremely hot and as I've found out with Core Temp, it's bumping into the 105 degree Celsius Tjunction temperature limit and throttling. Thus I end up with stuttering video and a pretty useless machine on the Windows side. This is just one activity that does this. Compiling in Visual Studio does the same thing.
Is this typical for Boot Camp or is there something wrong with my machine?

I was hoping to get some input with actual owners of the 17" Macbook Pro and Boot Camp.
I've been doing my own research and it seems that everyone points out that using Windows via Boot Camp makes their systems hotter. This is due to the drivers (or lack of it) for the Macbook's fan.
I'm truly hoping that Apple updates their drivers once Windows 7 comes out...I was looking forward to buying a Macbook Pro this month too. I guess I'll have to wait.
For those who have the 17" unibody version, what has your experience with Boot Camp been so far?

I am running windows vista 32 on the new macbook pro unibody. It works horrible. Constantly freezing and with tons of audio distortion. Many MacBook Pro unibody users are having this problem with Vista. There is no fix at the current moment. Although some have reported, success with different video drivers and using a program known as "Anti-Lag" to fix the audio distortion issue.

I have a new unibody Macbook Pro 15 inch and after playing with it for a month and having XP in parallel only, I decided to install Vista Ultimate through boot camp so that I'll be able to play games on my macbook. Now here's the problem...
After I load up the boot camp assistant and I proceed to install Windows, the laptop restarts and goes to the Vista installation screen. I set up the region codes and language that I prefer and I hit next. Now, I finally hit the big "Install Now" button in the middle. After clicking on this button though, I hit my error:
Required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing.
My dvd drive is the Matsua DVD-R UJ-868
My IDE controller is the 82801BA Ultra ATA Storage Controller 244B
Also, no, I do not have an external DVD drive and so loading up another CD with the drivers is out of the question.

i'm having a issue with my santa rosa mbp. I left for dinner and left my notebook on. Naturally the machine went to sleep. After i came back the machine would not boot up, the screen doesn't even turn on. The light on the latch release remains on. When i try a hard reboot, i'm having the same issue. Black screen, doesn't even get to the grey screen with the apple logo. I've tried going on 1 dimm or ram to see if it's a issue with the ram and still doesn't fix it.

I'm experiencing an odd restart issue with my Aluminum Macbook (see sig for specs). It is an occasional issue, happening maybe once every week or two.
Basically, it goes like this. I restart my machine for whatever reason, and as it reboots I get the apple (indicating a boot-up). Instead of booting up in 30 seconds as usual, the apple just sits on the screen for a while and then finally turns to an X. This continues each time I reboot. The only fix, I have found is to disconnect the power and remove the battery for thirty seconds. Then everything reboots as normal.
This has happened to me several times, the same scenario.
Does anyone have a hint for me on what might be happening?

My friend just gave me her White Macbook pre 2007 i beleive to fix because i fix all her computers but this is the first time im trying to fix a mac . Upon pressing the power button im greeted by the BONG tone and a white screen. Then i start hearing the HD making some very messed up noises witch to me are the fimiliar sound of a hd failure and so i beleive this is the problem. After a minute or two i get a flashing folder with a ? on it witch means it can't find the system files it needs to boot. So i tryed booting from the Tiger discs but it will not boot. Now this is leading me to beleive that it is the logic board. Right now im waiting till morning to buy a torx t8 so i can replace the HD.

I use my MacBook Pro for most everything except at home where I have a desktop system that's a few years old. The MacBook Pro should generally run rings around it except for disk performance and that's something that I'd like to fix. So I picked up a 1 TB MyBook and it's attached to the MacBook Pro right now but the MBP doesn't see the disk. I assume that I need to partition and format the drive.
The MacBook Pro currently has Mac OSX and Windows XP on the internal drive and they work just fine. What I'd like to do is to be able to boot Mac OSX, WinXP x64 and Win32 off of the 1 TB drive. I was hoping to partition it into three pieces and boot whichever OS I wanted at the time.
What I'd like to know is if it is possible to do this (3 OS on one external drive that the Mac could boot from) and how to go about setting this up. I would grab XP x64 and XP Win32 off another machine (that machine has three Windows licenses running) and move them to the MacBook Pro (with Microsoft's help if needed).

It has been known that HP has dropped the development of QuickPlay Direct due to compatibility issue.
For old model of Pavillion (before dv x5xx) that shipped with Vista as OS, HP did not include QuickPlay direct features anymore.
However, if you have managed to download QuickPlay Direct 2.3, you still can install QuickPlay Direct. In some models, a registry hacked was needed to install QuickPlay Windows and QuickPlay Direct. Some models of Presario that have QuickPlay button may also install QuickPlay.
For Pavillion models dv x5xx and above, installing QuickPlay Direct 2.3 would give you BSOD due to ICH8 sata driver.
I recently bought the last model of dv2700 series, dv2922tx, I prefer this old model instead of dv4 for some personal reasons. In this model, I did some try and error attempts to utilize QuickPlay button.............

I tried booting with F12 and choosing USB, tried to change boot order in bios and set USB 1st but nothing works. What else can I do ? The usb is bootable so the problem is with the laptop/bios.

I am planning on getting the mbp with hybrid graphics. I wish to triple boot osx, ubuntu 9.04 64 bit, and vista business 32 bit( or maybe 64bit)
I read that the 9400m is unusable in windows, and the 9600m gt is the only option. I was wondering if I could use just the 9400m in 9.04 to get better battery life, as I do not need powerful graphics in ubuntu.

I formatted my XPS M1530 using this guide (How to: Step-by-step guide for installing Windows XP on XPS M1530) and everything worked perfect.
But when I rebooted, I realised that the computer booted directly to XP and didn't let me choose between XP and 7. Normal, I thought, so I stuck in the W7 CD and selected the "repair" option. This did the trick very neatly, repairing the W7 install. The only problem was that now it will boot ONLY to W7 and I still have no selection screen for the OS.

I am trying to dual-boot Windows 7 on my XPS M1530 which is currently running Vista Ultimate - BUT I stumbled upon a problem. As I understand it, Vista will only allow you to have 4 partitions and magically I have 4 already.
I reformatted the laptop right after purchasing and no longer have the recovery drive. Here is what Vista says I have:
(1) EISA Configuration - 47mb
(2) C: (Vista) - 179gb
(3) Primary Partition - 4.25gb
(4) Primary Partition - 3gb

I'm running Vista 32 bit on my notebook and desktop and I have an xps 1640 on its way with Vista 64. I've always been very happy with Vista but I would like to try Windows 7..
I haven't set up a dual boot system since Windows 3.11, so I was wondering if the process is pretty straight-forward? When I start up the Windows 7 install dvd, will there be an option to setup dual boot?..
I'd like to try this on my xps 1530 first, but I want to make sure that I don't do something that would crater the Vista OS currently on it. Would I be better off waiting for my 1640 to arrive to play with Windows 7?.
