Ubuntu is available as a "live" CD, which means that you can use it directly from the CD without installing it. But running an operating system from a CD is slow, to see what Ubuntu can do running at full speed, you need to install it to your hard disk.
The ideal situation would be to install Ubuntu on it's own separate hard disk, but most people don't have two hard drives in their computer, and most people are not prepared to give up Windows. Therefore they have to install Ubuntu along-side Windows on the same hard disk in a dual-boot configuration.
Configuring a dual-boot system involves partitioning your hard disk to make space for Ubuntu. When your computer first starts, it reads information on the first sector of the hard drive which tells it where to find the "boot loader". The boot loader is a file with information about the installed operating systems and how to start them.
The boot loader for Windows is a file named "boot.ini". The boot loader for a Linux system (like Ubuntu) is GRUB (Grand Unified Boot Loader). When you install Ubuntu in a dual-boot system, it redirects the system to use GRUB. When you first start your system, GRUB presents a list of options, including starting Ubuntu or starting Windows. So you'll still be able to use your Windows operating system.
To install Ubuntu, start it with the live CD. To use the live CD, your computer's BIOS must be configured to boot from the CD drive. It's probably already configured that way, but if not, when your computer first starts watch for a message telling you which key to press to access the BIOS setup. Most computers use the F2, F1, Esc, or Del key.........
My cpu temps at idle according to HWMonitor are 70c for vista and in ubuntu using gkrellm they are around 60c.....why are they so hot? its on a wood surface + underclocked to 1v....
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just got my new DV4t yesterday with a blu ray drive and it's pretty awesome. However, I was hoping I could use the quickplay function so I could use less battery life and use my CPU's power only for watching blu rays without vista wasting resources in the background. But it always boots straight into Windows first and then loads quickplay second.

Once the Dell logo disappears i can see couple of blinking on the top left corner then screen goes off and should pop up booting, but it goes off and stays like that for 30secs then starts booting process. it's annoying. i tried many way to sort it out. in BIOS Quickbooting option is enable.
I want to dual boot the new Win 7 RC with the default Windows Vista OS already on the M1530.
My issues lie in not being able to make a 5th partition on the HDD for Win7 to go onto. Is there any way to keep my computer intact the it is and get Win7 on the HDD?
Before I deleted the Media Direct Partition but thats a horrible idea... just wondering if it would be possible without keeping another 2.5" HDD around just to have Win 7 sit on.
My flatmate is having a problem with her laptop (Dell Studio 15)
I'm entirely sure on the specs but I do know its Core 2 Duo, ATI Gfx card, 3gb ram, 25gb hdd, and the usual.
Basically the laptop powers on ok however during the booting up stage the laptop pretty much stops just before windows is supposed to load up where the screen is black with the mouse cursor available which can be moved however from then on it doesn't do anything.
A work mate of mine wants me to add XP to his Aspire before he goes overseas for work purposes.
Will i need to slipstream SATA drivers for this model? I have an XP sp3 disc.
I have a HP Pavilion dv4t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC and after updating my bios from F.22 to F.24 the computer wont boot into Vista. It was completed successfully using the winflash, but the computer restarted it just stays at a black screen, and wont go any further. (I hope bios is not corrupted.)
The computer is on but its not booting the operating system.
Is there any way I can revert to the old bios?
Also is there any key combination that can get it to load BIOS from a USB flash drive?
I am planning on getting the mbp with hybrid graphics. I wish to triple boot osx, ubuntu 9.04 64 bit, and vista business 32 bit( or maybe 64bit)
I read that the 9400m is unusable in windows, and the 9600m gt is the only option. I was wondering if I could use just the 9400m in 9.04 to get better battery life, as I do not need powerful graphics in ubuntu.
I've a wee problem here and I'm not sure if there's anything else that I can do with it. It's a Vostro 1700 and it passes POST fine.
Vista starts loading as evidenced by the scrolling bar, but then instead of going to a logon screen,
I just get a black screen with a moveable mouse pointer, nothing else. Hard disk activity comes to a halt.

owner of DV5T 1009TX, i have a singular 320GB WD on this system, with dual boot enabled (WIN 7 and VHP) thing is i would like to triple boot this systm with an instant on OS (i know presto but it's a paid subscription and sadly does not allow me to access NAS/ battery profiles) so i was thinking of (and do have) a 8GB SSD 34 express slot flash drive (which has a USB 2.0 bus on te motherboard) to install a third OS Ubuntu
can't do any of the termainal , scripts based stuff
but i would need to know how it won't bother the MBR shared by M$ OS
i have the CD from cannonical featuring the latest 9.04 distribution of ubuntu
Im having problems trying to find a decent guide on how to do this,(Most of them are outdated and what not) but I want to have the ability to use Ubuntu and OSX.
I currently have Ubuntu in Virtual Box, but I would like for my whole system to be able to switch from OSX and Ubuntu and boot or w/e.
Also, I have Ubuntu saved on my external HD iso file. So will I need to actually burn it to disk?
I also read that you can use bootcamp to do this.
So whats the easiest way to do this without having to reinstall osx(if I really dont have to)
I am picking up an external HD and will make a complete backup of my system with time machine. I will then install windows XP with bootcamp. I am going to format it as FAT32 so I have the ability to transfer files from mac to windows, but will that have an effect on game performance? I am mainly doing this to play black and white 2 and oblivion. I know oblivion will play well but how well will black and white 2 perform?

I hard shut it down and restarted to my mac os x to set the fans to max. Now when i'm im booting to windows through bootcamp, I goes past the first blinking cursor at the top and before showing the cursor a second time, it stops on a black screen and continues booting up. It doesn't go past the black screen. I hard shut it down and went to parallels to try to boot it. It boots up fine on parallels! Now what happened? Is it something to do with my bootcamp manager? I don't want to re format my windows again.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I got the blinking folder with a question mark when the macbook tries to boot up. A quick google search said something about missing boot files and booting from a CD.
The macbook wasn't bought new from Apple and I don't have the install CD that came with it. Can I use the install CD from another macbook? If so, is there a stipulation as to which version of OS X install CD I can use?
I can't and don't remember what version of OS X I have on the computer that is having problems. Is there a way to find out?
If anyone experiencing long load times when booting up Windows 7? It takes considerably longer for me to boot Win7 than SL...
When Win7 boots, whether it be a cold boot or reboot, ill find myself hanging at a blank/black screen with nothing other than a blinking underscore in the top left corner for what seems like a minute, then it'll go to the normal "Starting Windows..." screen from there. Is a format/reinstall in order?
I'm planning on install Parallels. I'm confused as whether to use XP or Vista. Would it be easier to install XP onto Mac? Vista looks different, and I don't mind using something different. If Vista will cause problems, I would rather use XP.
Also, is Parallels a popular choice? How is Bootcamp? VM Ware?
how many people are running Windows 7 and/or Windows Vista on their MBP?
How's the performance of Windows on MBP through bootcamp? Any compatibility issue? I have a few software for PC (i.e.: Nikon Capture NX2, Lightroom, Photoshop CS4, etc.,) and would prefer to run it on Windows w/o having to rebuy it.
Mainly would use the laptop for those purposes, but MBP has that cool factor vs PC laptops heehhe
I might use it occasionally for games (i.e. WOW). Ofcourse surfing the internet on OSX is not an issue.
vista crashes , not to mention the bsods, and audio crackling issues and performance drop using it under vistual os. Virtual os was not as snappy as running xp. SO now i say bye bye vista and Hello xp. What are your experiences on xp? Does the machine get as hot as on vista? 65-74c while surfing on the net and listening to music? Does it have the famous audio crackling issues? Is it as buggy and slow as vista? Also what are your gaming temps? Is the fan management working correctly?

It seems too good to be true. Can I use a Mac just as if it was 100% a PC? Is it easy to do? How does it work?
I was just wondering since battery life is lower on an MBP running vista, and the MBP is one big heat sink, is there an alternative to SMCfan for vista that works with the MBP? And what is power management like on vista for he MBP? I think i"m finally going to break and get one
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter an install of XP & windows 7 and use of a silly program to ramp the fans up; I've actually found that Vista is the best one for the job and actually ramps the fans up automatically, which means I can play games!
Finally then, it solves my problem, as partly why I got the macbook was to run windows, but was gutted when even if it was doing nothing, the heat coming off of it was really hot to touch.

The USB key appears on windows vista and 7 as well.
