This happened this morning, never heard this on a macbook or any laptop for the matter. It's all better now, but it was a shock! Sounded like a like radiator or something inside the notebook. Is this a bad sign of things to come?
View 8 RepliesMy sister is 14 and she spilled a full glass of water on her Macbook keyboard. It shut off automatically. I took out the battery and turned the laptop upside down. I tried to aim a hair dryer at the vents, and now it is just sitting still drying out. It is showing no sign of life.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy friend just gave me her White Macbook pre 2007 i beleive to fix because i fix all her computers but this is the first time im trying to fix a mac . Upon pressing the power button im greeted by the BONG tone and a white screen. Then i start hearing the HD making some very messed up noises witch to me are the fimiliar sound of a hd failure and so i beleive this is the problem. After a minute or two i get a flashing folder with a ? on it witch means it can't find the system files it needs to boot. So i tryed booting from the Tiger discs but it will not boot. Now this is leading me to beleive that it is the logic board. Right now im waiting till morning to buy a torx t8 so i can replace the HD.

My girlfriend who uses the 13" Macbook Pro heard that noise and asked me what the heck that was..
I told her that I hear that noise every single time I turn on the laptop. She said that its not the case for her....
Is what I'm hearing normal? I do not know of anyone with my particular version of the Macbook!
For quite a while my GF has nagged me for a "nice laptop", i.e. a MacBook. With the new models out, the old ones (just before the latest one-piece-thingies) should be easier to find. Most of her friends have one and I am soon getting my bonus, so starting to shop around.
Myself, I am a ThinkPad evangelist (those "ugly, square, black things" according to my GF), and have no trouble picking a used one. With Macs I am basically into uncharted territory, hense my post.
1) I am concerned if the previous owner has enabled features that would interfere with our privacy - remote activation of camera, remote access, etc. How can I check this and make sure she will not participate in some amateur BigBrother?
2) What should I check on a 13 inch MacBook except the obvious battery, fan noise, scratches and dirt beyond normal?
3) Does the Mac have BIOS, drivers, etc. I should upgrade before I hand it to her?
I just recently purchased a Dell Studio XPS 16 Laptop a bit over a month ago and have been experiencing a non-stop clicking noise while torrenting files.
It happens out of no where, usually around 30% into a download or more, possibly less. Around this point it will start to click continuously, and it appears I am not able to open task manager, although I am still able to talk on AIM, along with listening to a song currently open with no interruption.
I have also noticed that when I go to the Start Menu to try and restart or shut down that neither will work. This has resulted in me having to do a force shut down to stop the noise, and a reboot to run Vista normally again.
Ever since i've wiped the machine, i've been having these two problems. When I close the lid, it used to go to sleep straight away, but now I can see the sleep light (and the power button) flash and flash, then it goes to sleep.
When waking up it goes through the lenovo startup screen and resuming windows, then it asks for a password, before I used to open the lid and it would ask me for the password straight away. I know it was going to sleep because I could hear the beep straight away when I closed and opened it, but now it just takes too long.
Also, everytime I boot up into windows or resume into windows from a sleep state, I can hear the device noise, like something is being plugged in/out. But there is nothing being plugged in or out at the time. I can't get to device manager quick enough to see what it is that is causing it. But all drivers seem okay.
Also noticed, when the lid is closed, randomly the laptop turns off (hear the beep) an then turns back off again.
T420 model number: 4180-PR1 with OS: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
Sometimes the laptop when started wont go past the blue screens. Also sometimes it wont turnoff. I suspect it might be because of usb devices, but even still i get the problem. It's really annoying because MBP is supposed to be a flawless device.

I have a late 2008 unibody 2.53 MBP and i installed windows 7 RC on my machine with laptopvideo2go drivers and i'm geting random freezing when i am just browsing the web in firefox. I can't tell if it's a driver that's causing the issue. I notice in the action center that it's recommending me install new chipset drivers from nvidia but i haven't installed it.

As such, my opinions should be taken as coming from someone who has much knowledge and experience as far as PC's are concerned, but who is a total mac n00b.
First Impressions
When I first walked over to the Macbooks I was quite taken aback. The build quality is out of this world. In fact, I immediately walked over to the latest PC laptops to compare and immediately thought "manufacturing FAIL". Really, the Macbooks are italian sports cars, and PC's are 30 year old farm tractors to use the typical "car analogy".

I really only had any interest in the Macbook when I first went to the Apple stand, but came away with the intention of buying a MacBook Pro. Let me explain:
The MacBook's build quality is awesome. It's solid, no creaking plastic or flexable build, completely and utterly solid. Awesome.............
it happened two times today, the screen went totally black, the fans stop working and the "sleep lights" turned on and off. Soon after the disc drive made the sound that id usually makes when turning the computer on.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been speculating over this prospect giving the direction that Apple took with the starting price of the 24" iMac (upgrade everything else and downgrade the VRAM).
I mean, this is something I would like to see, but I wonder if it is a smart move on Apple's part given how much they make off the current MBP's with the so called Apple Tax.
And, if they made this move, one has to wonder if it still would be considered a Pro.
This is going to be my very first Mac. I'm really excited about it, but I don't know which one I should go for... I narrowed it down to these two models. Which one should I go for and why?

However, it gave me this error when I tried to install it: "You cannot install Macbook, Macbook Pro software update on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.5 or newer." Now don't tell me that I have selected the wrong partition to install the update, or that I need to update my OS to 10.5.5 because I already have 10.5.6 and I chose the Macintosh HD partition to install the update.

Apple has some great prices on refurbs so that's probably the route I'll be going however I'm having trouble discerning the difference between the 13" Aluminum Unibody standard macbook and the 13" Unibody Macbook Pro. From what I've read they both have the upgraded screen, they're obviously both unibody, both have the large button-less trackpad, and both have the 9400m. They even have the same dimensions and the only difference I can see between the images is a slightly different case bevel (also the firewire and sd card ports, both are useless to me).
Unfortunately, none of the Apple stores or BestBuys in the area have a non-pro unibody 13" Macbook for me to actually handle and compare. So, basically, what makes the pro version with the slower cpu and smaller hard drive at the same price point worth it?
If I make an image of my hdd from my white macbook with disk utility onto a hard drive I take out of a unibody macbook pro will it work and boot properly?
I will do this by taking the 250gb hdd out of the unibody macbook pro and putting it into a sata external usb hdd enclosure, then making an image of my current 120gb white macbook and writing the image onto the 250gb. After, I plan to put the 250gb hdd back into the macbook pro and boot it up normally as if everything from my white macbook was just copied onto the macbook pro.
I just received a new MBP 2.4 i5. When I am using the computer, every once in a while(every 20-30 seconds) I hear a "pinging" noise. Is this normal?

So I had to hard restart it, and go back into OS X. This is when I noticed a weird "growling or bumping" sound coming from the left fan which is kinda loud in a quite room. Its almost like a rattling sound.

View 8 Replies View RelatedShe has a white macbook with leopard I think, and has a separate partition in which she has boot camp, she uses specialized software that can only run in windows (doesnt run in vm). She got a new macbook air but wants to keep everything intact.
Do programs like duper clone drives with all files intact, including partitions? Keep in mind that the windows side is more important, installation of this software can only be done remotely from Russia, so it's a bit of a hassle if we screw up, we have to contact IT at a specific time and get them to do it.
Would I have to take the drive of the macbook air out? Or can i just clone to an external hard drive and then move that to the mba hard drive, in target disc mode or something.
I really love the black color of MB404, but is it good? does it crack easily?(is it plastic?)

I really wanted to buy Alu one before i hear about slanted keys and loose battery covers(i know %99 of them don't have that, but it's hard to risk when there's no way to fix it in here), because there's no Mac center in my country and i'm SO picky.
I need to import some LP's to digital format. At one time I had a program that allowed me to filter out any hiss or noise without degrading the recording. But sadly I can not find that program now. So is there any filters that come with GarageBand or can be added to do this. Or any other application that will work with a mac.
I need to import 100+ LP's. I will be using a preamp to take the phono players output directly into my MBP.
I've been looking at basicly two models, both got almost the exact same price tag here in Norway, so I'm not sure which one to go for.
The first ones is a MacBook Pro 15" with High-resolution 1650x1080 glossy screen, featuring the top of the line Intel Core i7-620M CPU the other is a MacBook Pro 17" with even higher resolution (1920x1200) glossy screen, featuring the slightly slower Intel Core i5-540M.
I don't list the other specifications as I don't really care about them, I already got a pair of 4GB 1600MHz CL7 (2x2GB) DIM's and a Intel X25-M 80GB SSD that I'll be using anyway.
There will be lots of movies and series played on my MacBook Pro, that's why I don't really considering paying a premium for the anti-glare screen, even though I love anti-glare and tend to struggle with glossy screens I don't see the point in actually paying more for it. And when watching movies and series, in often very dark rooms the glossy screen actually have some advantages.
The hard thing to decide here is slicker and lighter, with smaller screen and lower resolution, but better CPU versus the bigger, more heavy but featuring bigger screen and Full-HD+ resolution but slower CPU.....................
I just installed windows vista 32-bit on bootcamp, my problem is that when i am using vista, there is this high pitched noise coming from the laptop, but the noise isnt there when i use leopard.

Lately, when I open the lid, the drive starts "moaning". You know that sound as if you just inserted a CD or DVD into it. It does it three times with a couple of seconds gap in between.
It still reads just fine, I just tried it with a DVD, but I'm still concerned about the sound.
Usually there is just a small and short sound when opening the lid, just like when booting up, when (as much as I can figure) the head realigns to center.
equipping 2 machines:
1-a 13" MacBook Pro, primary use will be Internet and e-mail and manipulating music files. Will my husband really notice a difference/benefit between the basic 2.26 and the 2.53GHZ (and is it worth about $250 more)? If he uses it for video downloading will that make a difference?
2- a 15" MacBook Pro- here I'm debating between the 2.66 and 2.8. My daughter uses it for Office apps, PhotoShop, music, Internet and e-mail. Again, would video downloading make a difference?
