Apple :: Replace MBP 13" Super-Drive With Another HD

May 30, 2010

Is it possible to replace the Super-Drive on the MBP 13" (2010) with another hard-drive?

I rarely use the DVD drive so it would be cool if I could replace it with another hard-drive to store data in.

Apple :: Replace The Drive On My MBP (pre-unibody)

Apr 13, 2009

I want to replace the drive on my MBP (pre-unibody) with a "Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB" which I intend to buy from amazon.

I still have 2more years of warranty and I don't want to void it by installing it myself
I don't know if the rules may vary depending on country but I'm currently in London.

Apple :: Replace DVD With Hard Drive - 2008 15" MBP

Feb 22, 2010

Like all 2008 MacBook Pros, my DVD burner does not work.

Can I take it out and somehow work a hard drive in that same space?

What is really annoying is that I used an external DVD burner most of the time, specifically to protect the built-in DVD burner, so when I went to resell it... I would not have to list "perfect except the DVD burner does not work."

Dell :: XPS 1640: Replace Slot Loading Optical Drive With Hard Drive And Caddy

Sep 29, 2009

I'm thinking of removing my DVD drive and replacing it with a caddy and hard drive as explained here.

I don't use the DVD drive very often and would much prefer a 500GB or 1TB hard drive in there. The DVD drive can then be used externally via the eSATA port using this cable.

The ideal solution would be to use this NewmodeUS caddy as it supports the larger 12.7mm 1TB 2.5" hard drives and has a removable faceplate. The problem is the price.

At $55 including postage to the UK plus customs, VAT and clearance fees on top it's going to work out pretty expensive for what is essentially a slimline SATA to SATA extension

Sony :: Can I Replace The SSD Drive On A New Z With A LARGER SSD

Mar 25, 2010

I used to buy the sony Z's a couple of years ago and at the time they only offered slower small drives.

I could replace those with faster 7200RPM drives in larger sizes. Then when they started offering larger drives,

it was still cheaper to buy it with a stock 5400RPM drive and buy a larger 7200RPM drive seperately

HP/Compaq :: What Drive To Replace DVD-RW In NX9420

Jul 19, 2009

to figure the mess that are DVD laptop model numbers? I assume from the past that the bay in my NX9420 is a 9.5mm multi-bay II, yes?

I was going to grab a UJ-852 drive as it is listed as compatible with the NW9440...and near as I recall the only difference between the two models was the graphics card options and the included warranties.

My NX9420 has been running pretty much 24/7 since I bought in in around in early 2007.

Been through three HDD upgrades and now at 500GB, 4GB RAM...still plugging along wonderfully. Until the DVD drive started popping open just because...I finally had enough, took it out, opened it up and the danged front ribbon cable was so weakened it just fell apart in the middle at the bend...soooo, no real hope of repair so I felt it best to just upgrade the drive to something newer...hence does the UJ-852 and will it fit...I truly have looked, emailed vendors and cannot seem to figure out of the drives are only for the external Multi-bay II or I can remove any attached adapter and use the old mounting bracket then slide it into the bay and be done...maybe a new drive but nothing more...

Sony :: Replace Optical Drive With Mechanical HDD

I know this has been asked many times already, but I am still confused about how well a large storage HDD can be integrated.

If I plut in something like the ultrabay, wouldn't the case be opened and let in a lot of dust into the system? I watched a youtube video with someone trying to do the same on an older Z.

He went the ghetto route and use full size SATA cable. At the end not only is there hole where the optical drive used to be

Sony :: VAIO TTUpgrade SSD From 128 GB To 256/512 GB & Replace Optical Drive With SSD

Dec 31, 2009

I bought a VAIO TT couple of months back - at a time when it was being removed from shelves (in anticipation of VAIO X launch). At that time I hurried and picked up the only model that was available here in Amsterdam.

Its a TT21WN model with 128 GB SSD + Optical Drive (DVD). The SSD in use is a Samsung model - MMBQE28GFMUP-MVA (Slim uSATA).

Now ofcourse 128 GB is not enough so here is what I want to do:

1. Upgrade the 128 GB SSD to 256 GB or 512 GB if possible AND

2. Replace the Optical Drive with another SSD (max capacity possible)

regarding:

- Where can I find the SSD with such capacity and good quality

- How do I replace the current SSD with the new one (guide/manual)... is it easy/hard? Should I go to a service center instead of doing it myself?

- Is it possible to replace the Optical Drive with SSD? Again how easy or hard is it, and how to go about it?

Acer :: 3680SMART HDD Warning, Need To Replace Drive- What About Service Partition

Apr 18, 2010

I recently received an Acer 3680. Upon bootup, it gives a SMART error for the HDD, warning of imminent failure and a need to back up all files. According to the previous owner, it has been doing this for months. I want to repace the HDD, but have some concerns about the service / recovery partition. I recently made some back-up CD's and reinstalled Windows Vista Home Basic. This was done to wipe out the previous owner's data, plus see if the backup dics really would work. The CD's I made are the only discs I have for it.

If I buy a new hard disk drive (larger and a different model than the current one), will I be able to create a service partition on it, with whatever information is supposed to be on the service partition?

Will the backup CD's I made from the eRecovery software be able to install the OS onto a new hard drive, or will they only work with that exact model drive?

Basically, I am preferring a new HDD that will be partitioned and have the data just like the current one, but larger, with no SMART errors. Is this possible?

Dell Inspiron 1545 :: Replace And Load Os On Hard Drive?

Jan 4, 2015

I replaced the hard drive on my inspiron 1545 and tried to restore it with the dell data safe disks that I made when I got the machine.  Windows 7 loaded but I couldn't do anything with it,  It was very slow, I couldn't even get it to update. So I loaded in the windows 7 disk that came with it and now I have windows up and running and updated.  My question is what drivers do I need to install.  I went to dell/support and entered my service tag number and it came up with a list of drivers (46 of them), some I know I need but others seem to be for things I don't know if I have on the computer.  How do I know which ones I need?

Also I read something about a file called Dell System Software but its not on the drivers list.  Do I need it or not?

Apple :: How To Replace The HDD On The Aluminum MB And MBP

Mar 8, 2009

I was thinking about replacing my HDD on my aluminum Macbook recently, and I thought it might be interesting to make a guide for all of those that have an alu-MB or MBP and would like to replace the HDD. You are going to need a 2.5inch laptop HDD, in the SATA format. I haven't upgraded it yet, but I'll show you a step by step process on how to replace it.

Step 1: To replace a HDD, you need to turn the computer completely off.

Step 2: Make sure that you have your data backed up to an external HDD, via Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner.

Step 3: You are then going to flip the notebook over. Be sure to have a cloth or towel on the surface you're laying to notebook on, to prevent any scratches.

Step 4: Now, you are going to flip the tab up that is near the bottom of the notebook. That will release the battery/HDD cover.

Step 5: Now that the cover is off, you are now going to unscrew the HDD screw. There is only one screw that you have to remove to replace the HDD.

Step 6: You then want to pull on the clear tab, to get the old HDD out of the notebook. Be careful not to damage the SATA connector pins while taking it out. Safely disconnect the HDD from the connectors. Then you will need to take out the 4 screws on the original HDD caddy, and transfer them to the new HDD, as they will help reduce movements and vibration, keeping the HDD firmly in place. For that job you will need a T6 Torx screwdriver (star-shaped)-Credits to Underpantman and ClearSkies..............

some manufactures have a "Fn+key" or "shift+key" type of shortcut that will change an internal setting and enlarge or reduce the picture being displayed.
