Apple :: Followup HP Or Imac
Mar 15, 2009
I went to the Apple Store yesterday and they were out of the MBP 17".
They have an 24" imac
I looked at an HP m9515y at Best Buy for 1080.00+400.00 for HP 24" Monitor
Is it still worth it to get the imac?
Apple Pros:
OSX
Intel Duo
NVidia 9400
HP Pros:
BluRay Drive
TV Tuner
AMD Quad
Nvida 9600

I am thinking of buying a new iMac but need to know if Windows 7 x64 will run fine without any issues. I read someone talking about audio issues in W7, has that been resolved?

One day as I'm turning on the computer (2008 imac) somebody (not going to say who) decides to just turn the computer off just about 3-4 seconds after I clicked the power button. When I booted up the computer again many things were wrong.
1. The computer runs extremely slow, both in my windows and mac partitions, I've pretty much concluded that this is hard drive problem since it takes forever to load applications and they run slow if and when they do finally load up.
2. Boot time is much greater, takes several minutes to fully boot up either of the partitions.
So I basically try to figure out what was wrong. I perform disk repair and verify disk operations from the disk utility, and the problem persists. I reinstall the mac OS (Leopard) with the archiving option. The problems still persist. It gets to a point where I can no longer even boot into the mac partition and if I try it keeps restarting itself.
One time a no smoking sign came up without the cigarette (if that makes sense). The windows partition continues to run even slower. Sometimes I can't even log in to my account on the windows side and the computer freezes up. Eventually I ended wiping the mac partition completely and doing a fresh install of Leopard. It fixed the problem somewhat but I feel the mac isn't running as fast it was before and there are other problems. If I update to 10.5.8 the update fails with an error saying something about airport scripts.....

I'm kinda stuck in this decision. I've decided that I'm either getting:

or

I already have a Laptop, it's kinda good. Not great, but very usable.
I'm thinking of either replacing my laptop completely, and selling my old one..
or getting a Desktop and using my Laptop whenever I need to.
The most movement I'll be doing is moving from room to room, from desk to sofa - But I think I can stay at a desk and use my Desktop for the majority of the time and use my Laptop in bed or whatever.
I'm still not sure though.. I'd like to hear from some other people. Is the Desktop significantly better than the Laptop?
Keep in mind that I can use a laptop when I need, but its windows.

thinking about buying an iMac. I bought the 27inch model on Black Friday and since two days ago, my screen started flickering and blacking out. I returned it last night and found out this is a major problem for Apple right now. I got home and did a search on google and it seems like this problem is affecting a lot of people. I know it's an early model, but I would think there QC would be better. Anyways, I got refunded and will wait out until the problem is under control.

I'm looking for a Laptop/Desktop for music recording and editing. I found out that a 15 inch MacBook Pro was going to cost me $3712.44 to ship it to norway with these specs: 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB (2x2GB), 500MB 7200 RPM.
I was okay with $2649 but this got way overpriced (in my opinion).
So I took a look at an iMac 27-inch, specs: 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 8GB (4x2GB), 1TB Serial ATA Drive (doesn't mention RPM), and this for "only" $3345.
If I'm right 2.8GHz Quad-Core is 11.2GHz (or is 2.8GHz the total?) and 3.06GHz Duo Core 7.2 GHz (or 3.06GHz).
So all the specs are better, and the screen is BIG. Seems like something I should go for?

While doing some apple research about the new stuff, I found the latest tear down.
Notably the processor is a desktop E8700 3.06 intel core 2 duo and the wireless antennae is in the plastic apple logo right in the front.

I just got SXPS 16 with the specs below
i7 820Qm
4GB 500GB 7200
Bluray rom
ATI 4670 1GB
And I plan to buy an imac to be my powerful Desktop or in case my Laptop stops working sometimes.
I need one more powerful than my Dell (If less I dont know why I have to buy a Desktop anyway)
I know i7 2.8Ghz quad core with hyper threading and Ati 4850 512 GB model from new Imac will beat My Dell badly but How about i5 model with ATI 4850 512 or Core 2 3.33 E8600 (if I got it right) with ATI 4670 256 GB?

my sister has one with receipt from 1998, and I was just wondering if it came with Wi-Fi?
Also, what's the latest OS that I can upgrade it to which won't be too choppy? It would be nice for word processing as there are no high-end pc games to distract me.
Also, what can I upgrade in it?

I was given a old imac. It's white, has 2.16 Ghz processor, 3GB RAM and the latest version of OSX.
I am a having two problems with it.
1. Seemingly at random, lines of varying length, one or a couple of pixels tall, appear on the display. Within each line the pixel by color appears to be random.
2. Sometimes I will click on a website or launch something and I get the multicolored wheel. The machine freezes and the wheel keeps going round and round and round. This seems to happen most frequently when making a video full screen. I wind up turning the machine off and restarting it.
Any ideas as to what's wrong? Video card? Video card memory?

I currently have all Windows 7 PC's in my house. I find that it is easy to share foles and filders through Windows 7's "Homegroup" thing.
My question is:
If I have windows 7 running through parallels on a macbook pro, will with macbook pro show up in my homegroup?
On a side note I am also thinking of getting a 27" imac. I have an extra monitor so I would like to have windows 7 running on the external monitor, and os x on the main 27" screen.
I just want to make sure I can still share files easily with all the computers.

I recently bought similiarly spec'ed e6400 and T400 through Outlet and am close to finalizing on one. Because of pricing/warranty i am leaning towards keeping the e6400. I have some questions which i am hoping the kind folks here can help with:
1. Mail-In Warranty: Does Dell send a box and pay for shipping to the warranty repair depot for mail-in warranty? I definately don't want to pay the extra dough for next business day onsite.
For basic parts like Keyboard, Harddrive, etc does Dell mail them to you for user replacement?
2. Are these temps normal? All are taken during a moderate day. CPU is p8600(2.4Ghz, 25 watt)
- 43-44 degrees at Idle
- 82-84 degree while running Prime95
The processor is rated to operate till 105 degrees so guess this is kind of okay. But the T400 idles around 38 degrees and tops out at 68 degrees which makes me wonder if i have a hotter running e6400 than usual.
3. Currently my laptop does not throttle. For people who had throttling issues did it happen after certain amount of usage or was it present all throughout? How responsive was Dell in fixing it.
4. Has anyone had any issues with the touchpad or touchpad buttons? Are you happy with your touchpad?
5. How lasting are the laptop looks? Do you still like the laptop after say 9-12 months of usage?
6. How well is the laptop holding up. Common things seems to be scratches on lid and the Intel/Microsoft sticker imprint on the LCD frame. Is this accurate?

I like the slot load drive, I wouldn't want to go back to the traditional ones. However I've always thought it was a bit rough in the sense that you have to kind of force it in and it makes a lot of noise. Also when you eject it, it kind of 'spits' it out.

Does anyone have the wired full size apple keyboard w/ the numeric pad?
I got it a couple days ago and it definitely takes some getting used to. But that phase is over now and I love this keyboard. The build quality is amazing and typing feels just like my MBP keyboard.

Conventional wisdom holds that one of FAT 32's classical limitations is a 4 Gigabyte files size limit. I've done a few searches on the net, and I find this rule repeated ad-infinitem, without contradiction.
I recently purchased a 320 GB Iomega Prestige external drive that I plan to use interchangeably with my Mac and PC systems. To do this, I re-formatted the disk to a single 320 GB partition with FAT 32 file system (The drive comes formatted NTFS).
Yeah, I know there are work-arounds that would permit me to format it NTFS, and use it read-write on my Mac, and there are probably a few solutions that would permit me to format it Mac OS Extended, and use it my PC. I prefer not to use any "workarounds".
Here's my question.... I had occasion to copy a few files to the drive from my MacBook to the drive, namely my Virtual Machine files, that I don't want to use Time Machine for. I had no problem doing so. The two files exceed 4 Gigabytes handily, with one of them being over 30 Gigabytes! Oops, this can't be done, right?
I ask, how is this possible? I thought I had a 4 Gigabyte limit with FAT 32. Does the fact that I formatted the drive with my Mac give me some sort of advantage that Microsoft's formatting using the same file system does not?
I have read that the reason the FAT 32 files sytem can't store files over 4 Gigabytes, is the insufficient lack of storage within the allocation table for the requisite number of pointers required for a file over 4 Gig in size.

I have been to a shop to see the MB and the MBP in real and am very very impressed with them.
I am going to be using my new computer for some medium gaming and i'm wondering which will give me more "bang for my buck"
So, what FPS can i expect on the following games: Unreal Tournament 3, WoW, COD:WaW, battlefield Series and L4D. On med- high settings using the Macbook and the Macbook Pro
And also which would you recommend? Any macbook user that wishes they upgraded to Macbook Pro?

I know that I have stated earlier that I wasn't considering the MBP 17 because the lack of portability, and that I already got a 24" Full HD screen.
But the thing is; I might be able to get the MBP 17 for the same price as the highend MBP 15, because of all the hassle etc that occurred.
I feel like, I don't really need the extra screen estate, I already think the 15" is barely portable, but the 17" got a great battery etc.
When it comes to what I'm going to use the computer for; mainly light stuff the coming time, but after that I'm going to start using final cut pro a lot and I know the 15" screen isn't enough for the ui of the program and the 17 is enough.

I would really like to upgrade my MBP to 8 GB of Ram as I use lots of VMWares in my job. I read that you can do 6 GB but I also saw some people trying 8GB of RAM on even older MBPs.
I read this with interest:
[url]
I'm sure you have also seen the article about the MBP only doing 6GB and not 8GB.
Has anybody here tried 8GB? With the 17" supporting 8GB, boy I wish they would allow it on older MBPs.
I'm hoping with Snow Leopard that 8GB becomes an option.
