If a MacBook Pro model was announced that is 1.2"-1.3" thick (.25"-.35" thicker than the current 15" model), and it came with a 280M GTX, would you buy that over the thinner model with a slower video card?
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy 17in MBP Core 2 Duo suffered from a video card failure of some kind (possibly memory), and now I am getting garbled display on the LCD and a external monitor.

I havn't opened it up yet but I've always been curious about why they show 9400M and 9600M GT are there 2 video cards in this notebook ?
I've installed Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 on my Macbook Pro (15", 2.8Ghz, nVidia 9600M GT), but under Preferences>Performance, the GPU Settings section is greyed out with the message: "Graphics hardware acceleration is unavailable. You will need to upgrade your video driver and possibly your video card."
I have tried re-installing Photoshop, trashing preference files etc. But the problem still exists. I can't find anything on the web about the 9600M GT or the 9400M not being recognised by Phothop CS4, so what could be causing this?
Daughter told me that her MacBook Pro looks like it lost the video card again. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro and got her homework files off of it. I'm going to bring it into the Apple Store this morning where they will most likely replace the motherboard but it will be down for a week. The system is a few months shy of three years old so the extended warranty should cover it.
My question is do current MBPs still have the video card problem? This is the second MB replacement for this computer so I expect the replacement motherboard to last about 1.5 years. I would probably want to buy a replacement before then so that she doesn't lose her system during school. I think that we have enough in the way of spares so that she can get by - I'm probably going to give her my Dell XPS M1330 for the week but I'd like a long-term solution. I don't think that I will give her my MBP as she games and I don't want to lose my system.
I just want to get an idea of the power of the 9600m GT video card that comes with the macbook pro's. Now on my desktop computer I have a 3 year old ATI 1600x 512mb PCI-e video card which is definitely getting old. My question is can anybody tell me how the 9600m GT compares to the ATI 1600x, is it better? this way I can get an idea of the power of the 9600m GT because I know pretty well what the 1600x is capable of.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am thinking of buying a new iMac but need to know if Windows 7 x64 will run fine without any issues. I read someone talking about audio issues in W7, has that been resolved?
View 4 Replies View RelatedOne day as I'm turning on the computer (2008 imac) somebody (not going to say who) decides to just turn the computer off just about 3-4 seconds after I clicked the power button. When I booted up the computer again many things were wrong.
1. The computer runs extremely slow, both in my windows and mac partitions, I've pretty much concluded that this is hard drive problem since it takes forever to load applications and they run slow if and when they do finally load up.
2. Boot time is much greater, takes several minutes to fully boot up either of the partitions.
So I basically try to figure out what was wrong. I perform disk repair and verify disk operations from the disk utility, and the problem persists. I reinstall the mac OS (Leopard) with the archiving option. The problems still persist. It gets to a point where I can no longer even boot into the mac partition and if I try it keeps restarting itself.
One time a no smoking sign came up without the cigarette (if that makes sense). The windows partition continues to run even slower. Sometimes I can't even log in to my account on the windows side and the computer freezes up. Eventually I ended wiping the mac partition completely and doing a fresh install of Leopard. It fixed the problem somewhat but I feel the mac isn't running as fast it was before and there are other problems. If I update to 10.5.8 the update fails with an error saying something about airport scripts.....
I went to the Apple Store yesterday and they were out of the MBP 17".
They have an 24" imac
I looked at an HP m9515y at Best Buy for 1080.00+400.00 for HP 24" Monitor
Is it still worth it to get the imac?

I'm kinda stuck in this decision. I've decided that I'm either getting:

I already have a Laptop, it's kinda good. Not great, but very usable.
I'm thinking of either replacing my laptop completely, and selling my old one..
or getting a Desktop and using my Laptop whenever I need to.
The most movement I'll be doing is moving from room to room, from desk to sofa - But I think I can stay at a desk and use my Desktop for the majority of the time and use my Laptop in bed or whatever.
I'm still not sure though.. I'd like to hear from some other people. Is the Desktop significantly better than the Laptop?
Keep in mind that I can use a laptop when I need, but its windows.
I've got a new iMac here fir my parents but would like to get an xtra 4 gigs of ram. Where's the best place to find this? Macmall, amazon...? And could someone direct me to the exact product page...
Also, is upgrading memory a simple task? I seem to remember reading that it is but would like your opinions on the matter. YouTube tutorials, etc.
thinking about buying an iMac. I bought the 27inch model on Black Friday and since two days ago, my screen started flickering and blacking out. I returned it last night and found out this is a major problem for Apple right now. I got home and did a search on google and it seems like this problem is affecting a lot of people. I know it's an early model, but I would think there QC would be better. Anyways, I got refunded and will wait out until the problem is under control.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a Laptop/Desktop for music recording and editing. I found out that a 15 inch MacBook Pro was going to cost me $3712.44 to ship it to norway with these specs: 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB (2x2GB), 500MB 7200 RPM.
I was okay with $2649 but this got way overpriced (in my opinion).
So I took a look at an iMac 27-inch, specs: 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 8GB (4x2GB), 1TB Serial ATA Drive (doesn't mention RPM), and this for "only" $3345.
If I'm right 2.8GHz Quad-Core is 11.2GHz (or is 2.8GHz the total?) and 3.06GHz Duo Core 7.2 GHz (or 3.06GHz).
So all the specs are better, and the screen is BIG. Seems like something I should go for?
im running leopard on my imac, is there any way to make it ask for a password after coming out of sleep?

Notably the processor is a desktop E8700 3.06 intel core 2 duo and the wireless antennae is in the plastic apple logo right in the front.

i7 820Qm
4GB 500GB 7200
Bluray rom
ATI 4670 1GB
And I plan to buy an imac to be my powerful Desktop or in case my Laptop stops working sometimes.
I need one more powerful than my Dell (If less I dont know why I have to buy a Desktop anyway)
I know i7 2.8Ghz quad core with hyper threading and Ati 4850 512 GB model from new Imac will beat My Dell badly but How about i5 model with ATI 4850 512 or Core 2 3.33 E8600 (if I got it right) with ATI 4670 256 GB?
my sister has one with receipt from 1998, and I was just wondering if it came with Wi-Fi?
Also, what's the latest OS that I can upgrade it to which won't be too choppy? It would be nice for word processing as there are no high-end pc games to distract me.
Also, what can I upgrade in it?
Looks like the new 24inch iMac has the option for the new ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory. Would love to see the new benchmarks on that !
View 8 Replies View RelatedI was given a old imac. It's white, has 2.16 Ghz processor, 3GB RAM and the latest version of OSX.
I am a having two problems with it.
1. Seemingly at random, lines of varying length, one or a couple of pixels tall, appear on the display. Within each line the pixel by color appears to be random.
2. Sometimes I will click on a website or launch something and I get the multicolored wheel. The machine freezes and the wheel keeps going round and round and round. This seems to happen most frequently when making a video full screen. I wind up turning the machine off and restarting it.
Any ideas as to what's wrong? Video card? Video card memory?
1.I really didn't find much info on the (now not so) new white unibody Macbooks, expect some items for sale. And please, don't tell me that just buy the aluminum model for the extra $200, my question is strictly from an engineering point of view: heat. We all know aluminum Macbooks are quite hot, right? But how does the white unibody compares to the aluminum regarding heat issues?
2.What might be the reason that the whole bottom of the white unibody contcts the table beneath it, compared to the aluminum model, which has four rubber contact points on the four corners?
3.On the other thread I read a dedicated graphics card does not really add to battery consumption. Can you confirm that?
My main usage profile is office, web and seeing (HD, if available) Youtube videos. This one is rather a 15" vs. 13" Pro question, and half hypothetic. Let's say, all things are being equal on two models, the processor none the least, the only differences are one model has the integrated Nvidia, the other the integrated Intel plus discreet Nvidia combo, which one would serve me better, regarding performance and battery life? The discreet graphics would at least turn on when playing the HD videos?
4.Running native Windows (7 or XP) still suck on Macbooks, because of the drivers?
I currently have all Windows 7 PC's in my house. I find that it is easy to share foles and filders through Windows 7's "Homegroup" thing.
My question is:
If I have windows 7 running through parallels on a macbook pro, will with macbook pro show up in my homegroup?
On a side note I am also thinking of getting a 27" imac. I have an extra monitor so I would like to have windows 7 running on the external monitor, and os x on the main 27" screen.
I just want to make sure I can still share files easily with all the computers.
Does anyone know if DELL offers any laptop (besides the m1730) with a dedicated 256 bit video card with at least 256 Meg. memory
View 10 Replies View Relatedif the Nvidia 130M can be upgraded? I love everything about the HDX 18 but the video card... running games like crysis is not what I hoped it to be. Was wondering if any high tech users know anything about upgrading the video card on this bad boy?
View 4 Replies View Relatedtook my 1730 apart to blow out the dust and quiet a noisy vid card fan. Upon re-assembly, I used a long screw instead of a short when securing the monitor back to the body of the laptop.
That screw pierced a resistor and killed my video card... POOR design Dell + idiot move me= dead 1730. The short of it is, I need someone who has had their 1730 apart to tell me the value of the resistor R12, which is under the rubber flap below the left lid support screw.
(UPDATE) I purchased a new card..I know, I know, but I had to as I had projects that I needed access too. I would still like to fix this card though.
The R12 resistor is a micro resistor with "2A2" printed on top of it.. Anyone have any idea where I can get one of these? I thought at first it was 202 but under the magnifying glass I am pretty sure its "2A2".
Both m8800gtx have an error code 43 in hardware device manager (vista32).
Well, here is what is going on. I have an m1730 that has been working A1 since I got until yesterday when I installed CoD:WaW.
It might be just a coincidence though because the game was playing good for a while until I got kicked out of the game and when I tried to launch the game again it said I had a DirectX corruption. So I took a look at directx diag and saw no problem, except for video card info showed nothing!
This is where I decided to look in hardware manager and saw the dreaded exclamation point (error 43) for both my cards.
I did a full video driver uninstall, then did a driversweeper and took out all nvidia stuff and tried to install my drivers again and still get the same error!
Are my video cards messed up? I will be attempting a clean install on another spare drive today to see if it really a driver/software conflict.
I believe my video card in XPS 1530 is failing, from time to time i get half inch by half inch colorful checkboard pattern on part of my screen, usually shows up in the same place.

Her HD has been on the fritz, and my mother board seems to have been on the fritz recently (not powering on), and seems to have finally died, so I put my HD in her machine and everything - except - the video seems to be working properly.
Basically the only two display options I have under the video properties are 1024x768 and 800x600... whereas in the HD's native machine, I can go considerably wider.
