Apr 21, 2010My 17in MBP Core 2 Duo suffered from a video card failure of some kind (possibly memory), and now I am getting garbled display on the LCD and a external monitor.

HP/Compaq :: HDX 16dual Core Or The HDX 18quad Core For Video
Mar 2, 2009I want to upgrade my old laptop to something nice, and am torn between to systems.
An HDX 16 with:
2.40 Ghz dual core duo ( P8600 chip )
6 gigs of ram
OR...
An HXD 18 with
2.0 Ghz QUAD core ( QX9000 chip )
4 gigs of ram
both systems have the same video card ( Nvidia with 512megs of ram ) 500 gig hard drive.
What would be the faster machine for doing video ? and what would be the overall faster machine ?
I realize that not all applications will take advantage of a quad-core chip like the QX900, so this is why I"m asking. if the dual-core P8600 chip @ 2.40 Ghz in the HP HDX 16 with that 6 gigs of ram will actually be faster overall than the quad core would be, and perhaps even be faster at rendering video ?

Jul 20, 2009I've installed Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 on my Macbook Pro (15", 2.8Ghz, nVidia 9600M GT), but under Preferences>Performance, the GPU Settings section is greyed out with the message: "Graphics hardware acceleration is unavailable. You will need to upgrade your video driver and possibly your video card."
I have tried re-installing Photoshop, trashing preference files etc. But the problem still exists. I can't find anything on the web about the 9600M GT or the 9400M not being recognised by Phothop CS4, so what could be causing this?
Apple :: MacBook Pro Looks Like It Lost The Video Card
Mar 21, 2010Daughter told me that her MacBook Pro looks like it lost the video card again. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro and got her homework files off of it. I'm going to bring it into the Apple Store this morning where they will most likely replace the motherboard but it will be down for a week. The system is a few months shy of three years old so the extended warranty should cover it.
My question is do current MBPs still have the video card problem? This is the second MB replacement for this computer so I expect the replacement motherboard to last about 1.5 years. I would probably want to buy a replacement before then so that she doesn't lose her system during school. I think that we have enough in the way of spares so that she can get by - I'm probably going to give her my Dell XPS M1330 for the week but I'd like a long-term solution. I don't think that I will give her my MBP as she games and I don't want to lose my system.

Now on my desktop computer I have a 3 year old ATI 1600x 512mb PCI-e video card which is definitely getting old. My question is can anybody tell me how the 9600m GT compares to the ATI 1600x, is it better? this way I can get an idea of the power of the 9600m GT because I know pretty well what the 1600x is capable of.

And please, don't tell me that just buy the aluminum model for the extra $200, my question is strictly from an engineering point of view: heat. We all know aluminum Macbooks are quite hot, right? But how does the white unibody compares to the aluminum regarding heat issues?
2.What might be the reason that the whole bottom of the white unibody contcts the table beneath it, compared to the aluminum model, which has four rubber contact points on the four corners?
3.On the other thread I read a dedicated graphics card does not really add to battery consumption. Can you confirm that?
My main usage profile is office, web and seeing (HD, if available) Youtube videos. This one is rather a 15" vs. 13" Pro question, and half hypothetic. Let's say, all things are being equal on two models, the processor none the least, the only differences are one model has the integrated Nvidia, the other the integrated Intel plus discreet Nvidia combo, which one would serve me better, regarding performance and battery life? The discreet graphics would at least turn on when playing the HD videos?
4.Running native Windows (7 or XP) still suck on Macbooks, because of the drivers?

Apr 29, 2010A lot of people don't know which processor to get so check out this great video. He really does an excellent job comparing the 2. Helped me decide that the core i5 was better for what I need. There is not much difference between the GPU's vram according to the benchmarks.

Feb 28, 2009I am going to buy again a system board due to video failure. Insteed a refurbished I wanna buy a new/used board. Is it possible to replace a 434659-001 G73M system board to a 447982-001 / 447983-001 G86 one? I have a dv9019ea and I observed that theese cards have same output connectors on them. I dont know about dimensions but they look similar.

Dec 15, 2009I have a DV9500t with a nvidia 8600gs card in it. Last Friday my wife brought it to work and when she was leaving she just shut the laptop and stuck it in our notebook bag. When she got home we went out to eat and when we got back we took the laptop out and it was very very hot and smelled a little funny, apparently the damn thing didn't go to sleep when my wife closed the lid. Great HP workmanship there.... Well I let it cool off and turned it on... It started showing little red dots all over and when it tried to boot into windows there was multi colored lines up and down the screen. I could boot into safe mood and see everything, but the display was still a bit screwy show little red dots and artifacts everywhere...
So I've concluded that the video card overheated and I'm lucky it didn't start on fire, but at the same time the laptop is unusable. Is there anything inexpensive that I can do about this? The warranty expired a year and a half ago and I certainly can't afford a new laptop at this point. This is very frustrating since I thought the laptop would last at least another year.... Does anyone know if the video card can be replaced?

Dell :: Did My M1530 Card Failure
Jan 31, 2010I know many of you have experienced premature video card death on the M1530s with 8600M GTs due to heat related failure, but I've never been sure exactly what to look for. Here's my situation-
I've had my M1530 for about a year and a half now with no serious problems to date. I game regularly and use rivatuner to overclock my card, but I also monitor temps and after I started cleaning the vents regularly and using a CPU undervolt, the max GPU temp never exceeds about 74C.
Today, I fired up my laptop for some racing online with friends (I play GTR2 and GTR Evo online), but I noticed that no matter what I did, the games wouldn't get more than 10-15 frames per second when they normally run anywhere from 35-50FPS on the settings I use, which were unchanged.
Sony :: VGN-FZ11S- Graphics Card Failure
May 11, 2009I'm having a sudden problem with my FZ11S laptop. I've had it for just under 2 years and its just started playing up. Basically, I'm getting a set of either red, white or blue dashed vertical lines over the screen during the Vaio logo and initial bootup, followed by complete black screen and then blue screen dump, followed by automatic reset and through the same cycle. I've tried doing a complete recovery from the drive, and the screen works fine during the initial steps, but then goes wrong again when it does the first restart to begin reinstalling Vista. I ran the diagnostics programme in the recovery suite, and the CPU, RAM and HDD are all fine.
At the moment, I'm running the laptop with a CD booted version of Ubuntu. When using this, the normal version also does not work, but the low-graphics version does work, at 800x600 resolution only. The screen itself seems fine. Does this mean something has gone wrong with the graphics card?

Nov 24, 2009way to test the wireless card in the laptop, seems to be dead. The laptop is almost 3 years old and is no longer under warranty.
This model of laptop (in general) had a lot of issues due to the faulty Geforce go 6150 GPU, and I guess that the excessive heat generated by it has taken it's toll.

What are the differences of the 2.93 Ghz in the 17" and the 2.8 Ghz found in the 15"?
To anybody's knowledge do they have plans of updating the 15" to accomodate the 2.93 Ghz?

Dec 3, 2009Not trying to bash Apple, but I'm genuinely curious: If Apple markets their laptops as being the best in the market and having the latest technology, why do they not use the Core i7 processors, which are newer than the Core 2 Duos? The TDP is the same as the C2D T-series for the i7 Q720 and Q820: 35 W + 10 W for NB.

May 18, 2009took my 1730 apart to blow out the dust and quiet a noisy vid card fan. Upon re-assembly, I used a long screw instead of a short when securing the monitor back to the body of the laptop.
That screw pierced a resistor and killed my video card... POOR design Dell + idiot move me= dead 1730. The short of it is, I need someone who has had their 1730 apart to tell me the value of the resistor R12, which is under the rubber flap below the left lid support screw.
(UPDATE) I purchased a new card..I know, I know, but I had to as I had projects that I needed access too. I would still like to fix this card though.
The R12 resistor is a micro resistor with "2A2" printed on top of it.. Anyone have any idea where I can get one of these? I thought at first it was 202 but under the magnifying glass I am pretty sure its "2A2".
Dell :: XPS M1730 Video Card
Mar 22, 2009Both m8800gtx have an error code 43 in hardware device manager (vista32).
Well, here is what is going on. I have an m1730 that has been working A1 since I got until yesterday when I installed CoD:WaW.
It might be just a coincidence though because the game was playing good for a while until I got kicked out of the game and when I tried to launch the game again it said I had a DirectX corruption. So I took a look at directx diag and saw no problem, except for video card info showed nothing!
This is where I decided to look in hardware manager and saw the dreaded exclamation point (error 43) for both my cards.
I did a full video driver uninstall, then did a driversweeper and took out all nvidia stuff and tried to install my drivers again and still get the same error!
Are my video cards messed up? I will be attempting a clean install on another spare drive today to see if it really a driver/software conflict.

Aug 30, 2009My wife and I have a couple of Latitude 600m's both seemingly with Radion 9000 video cards.
Her HD has been on the fritz, and my mother board seems to have been on the fritz recently (not powering on), and seems to have finally died, so I put my HD in her machine and everything - except - the video seems to be working properly.
Basically the only two display options I have under the video properties are 1024x768 and 800x600... whereas in the HD's native machine, I can go considerably wider.
