HP/Compaq :: Dv9500t Video Failure
Dec 15, 2009
I have a DV9500t with a nvidia 8600gs card in it. Last Friday my wife brought it to work and when she was leaving she just shut the laptop and stuck it in our notebook bag. When she got home we went out to eat and when we got back we took the laptop out and it was very very hot and smelled a little funny, apparently the damn thing didn't go to sleep when my wife closed the lid. Great HP workmanship there.... Well I let it cool off and turned it on... It started showing little red dots all over and when it tried to boot into windows there was multi colored lines up and down the screen. I could boot into safe mood and see everything, but the display was still a bit screwy show little red dots and artifacts everywhere...
So I've concluded that the video card overheated and I'm lucky it didn't start on fire, but at the same time the laptop is unusable. Is there anything inexpensive that I can do about this? The warranty expired a year and a half ago and I certainly can't afford a new laptop at this point. This is very frustrating since I thought the laptop would last at least another year.... Does anyone know if the video card can be replaced?

I bought this hp dv9500t laptop in oct, 2007 and is now out of warranty.
I have updated Vista to SP1. Yesterday, I was playing a song in windows media player while the lid was kept closed. Suddenly, the song went into trrrrr like sound and the machine rebooted on its own. After having rebooted on its own, the display went into lowest bit depth (6 bit/600x480!), I had to manually change it to 32 bit / 1680x1050.
Then to my shock, I found, the video adapter was not Nvidia and it defaulted to default generic VGA driver in display properties.
Later I tried reinstalling the nvidia driver and even upgraded it to latest from laptopvideo2go site. But nothing solves the issue, it never identifies any nvidia display driver.
Looks like the display card got corrupted after upgrade to sp1.
What options do I have now? How much will it cost me to get the video card replaced, if it is determined that the card is corrupted? I am in India now, so I am clueless where I need to send this machine to get serviced?

I want to know this two things:
1st- Does HDX 18" Laptops get as hot as dv9500T? My dv9500T (as most hp laptops) used to get pretty hot under normal circumstances (about 60C just browsing) and as almost everyone here I use Rightmark CPU to downclock my CPU and use a Cooling pad to keep temperature under control (44 - 48 C). I'd like to get an HDX 18" but I'd like them not to have the same problem, if somebody owns one, please share your experience and also, Does HDX 18" laptop support more than 4GB Ram?.
2nd- In the case I can't get an HDX 18", I might want to upgrade the Processor. What is the highest proecessor a DV9500T will support? See my signature to check on my current dv9500T config.

I own a dv9500t model which has been working fine since I bought it in October 2007. Today out of the blue the screen went black while I was working on the computer. What does this mean? I am still able to use the computer via an external monitor.

I have the dv9500t that died yet a third time because of the nvidia problem.
I am wondering if I can buy a new laptop, which would probably be a base model, and then successfully transplant the CPU and RAM and HDD into the newer laptop. My CPU is still WAY better than anything out there in todays base models (C2D T7300 4MB L2 Cache, etc etc) and I have 4GB of RAM installed. I have 2 HDDs, one is 160GB, one is a 320GB HDD that I plan on installing onto the new laptop.
So basically, RAM and HDD specs arent important to me in the new laptop except that my current one from the dv9500t fit, as well as the CPU being able to fit in the new laptop.
I need to buy a laptop asap, but it sucks that my 3yr old dv9500t is still margins better than today's base models... i was hoping that today's base models would be as good or even better than my current model

I've had my DV9500t for nearly two years now and can say that for the most part I've been happy with it.
I've been reading a good deal about the overheating 8600M GS issues and have personally noticed that under load the laptopo does get extremely hot. Usually when using intensive applications (modeling, simulations, games, etc) I try to use a desktop but sometimes I do use this laptop.
I'm planning to get to get a cooler, but was wondering if upgrading my BIOS could also actually help as well. I’ve seen a few posts about the different versions for the DV9500t, but am wondering which version you have all found to be the “best” in terms of thermal management and overall performance (if any difference).
Right now my laptop is running the original F.09. I’ve held off on updating the BIOS thinking if there’s nothing wrong why bother, but now I think that maybe it is time to update, just in case.

an issue I have, regarding video playback. Whenever I watch a video file on my HP DV6T, the playback seems rather grainy.
The video playback seemed much more clearer of a picture on my dv5z, and I am wondering if it has to do with the resolution.
Could this be because of the 16" 1366x768 resolution?
All I want is to be able to watch my movies or video files FULL SCREEN, and in good video quality.

I have the following system:
HP DV5-Z CTO1000
AMD Turion ZM-80 2.1Ghz @65nm and .950 Voltage
3GB PC26400 RAM (Samsung 2GB, Elpida 1GB)
ATI Radeon HD 3200 w/ 256MB shared memory
Windows 7 Ultimate
In normal use (meaning browsing the web, listening to mp3 music, watching h.264 video, using MS Office, etc) there is absolutely nothing wrong with the machine. However, after a few minutes of light gaming, such as the Sims 3 or World of Warcraft on low settings, the entire system locks up and shows the following screen. The only thing that remains functional is the caps lock button, which lights on and off when pressed. No alt+tab, no ctrl+alt+dlt, nothing else.
At first I thought this was an overheating issue, as placing a desk fan near the heat vent made the problem delay. Instead of deathscreening a few minutes into playing the game, I could get a good hour or two of functionality. But even with the desk fan in a cold environment, the problem still occurs.

i have a dv2220us i purchased sometime in late 06 early 07 had a few issues over the years nothing major.
sunday 04/02/10 i pick my laptop up slide my finger across touchpad and nothing happens. quick launch buttons are lit, power light is on and wifi selector is orange while in on position. hmmm...i power it down then start it back up. it's much quieter than it has ever been and extremely cool. i pull hard drive cover and notice it's not spinning at all.
i remove hdd from chassis plug it in to coolmax cd-350 and my wife's dv4t hdd starts clicking, buzzing, beeping and grinding. i'm certain it's dead and i don't care if i'm able to salvage anything from it.
i purchased a wd6400bevt as a replacement, but i never made back up disks. i've installed the new drive all quick launch lights are on power light is on and wifi is orange. i know this hdd has no os or drivers, but i was hoping the monitor would wake up.

I was using my laptop normally when suddently it began to freeze. No blue screen, no reboot, just freeze under Win7.
I did hard reboot to Win XP, same problem. And I re-tried to reboot under Ubuntu, same problem, freeze...
So, I tried a memtest because at this moment I was expected a ram problem, but nothing, 3 pass OK, no error.
BUT after that, next reboot, even no Bios...
Black screen, no bip, JUST the hdd led blinking in red.
So I tried to change the hdd (by a one I'm absolutly sure it works)
Same problem.
I tried to boot on a cd as well, it doesn't work.
What the meaning of red blinking on hdd led? (Normally this led is always white)
Someone knows the errors codes of the HP hdx 18t?
I'm supected a cpu or motherboard failure.

I have a compaq presario f700 and I got it in november of 2007. Anyways today I was surfing the web when all the sudden in lost the internet connection. The little orange light next to the switch was on but the switch was turned on. it would not find any wireless networks so I reinstalled the wireless driver from the recovery program and it worked for like 10 minutes, then the orange light came back on and I lost internet connection. Anyways I have reinstalled windows twice now and I still cannot get the computer to find any wireless connections and the blue light will not come on, it stays orange. Is this a software problem or did my broadcomm wireless hardware thing take a crap?

My HP dv1000 hasn't been working too well for several weeks. Recently, when I started it up, it showed the HP logo, then just said MBR error. I was following these instructions on how to fix it [url], but when I put a new XP CD in and pressed a key to boot from CD, it came up with this error message:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
Has my laptop reached the end of its life?

way to test the wireless card in the laptop, seems to be dead. The laptop is almost 3 years old and is no longer under warranty.
This model of laptop (in general) had a lot of issues due to the faulty Geforce go 6150 GPU, and I guess that the excessive heat generated by it has taken it's toll.

I was enjoying my new dv5z and my new Acer V193w monitor when the screen started flashing. I got a message stating that there was display driver failure or something to that effect. It happened once more and then I got a blue screen suggesting I remove any recently installed hardware.
I updated the monitor driver and all seemed well for a while...until it hapenned again tonight.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ61 Product: VM9496Q2X Model: CQ61-319WM, that has a black screen when I power up. Â The wifi button stays red and the caps lock flashes twice. Â I believe this indicates a BIOS corruption failure. Â I have tried resetting by unplugging and removing the battery, and holding the power button for 30 seconds. Â I have tried the f8 key and the esc repeatedly at power up. I have also tried pressing the windows and B key along with the power key but nothing worked. Â

I bought a HP Presario DV8339us a few days ago and I put Windows XP on it and installed all the necessary drivers. Now I have no idea what's going on but when i maximize my Firefox or IE windows the screen flickers constantly and won't stop until I actually turn off the computer. I'm running on a nVidia GeForce GO 7600. Got all the drivers from the HP site so i'm pretty sure they aren't corrupt.

There is a white line across my screen and its a hardware issue, not a software issue. If I press on the left part of the LCD I can make the line disappear, but once I relieve the pressure it comes back again.
Does this sound like an inverter failure? From what I read this symptom doesnt sound typical for an inverter.

i wanted to output the dv5 1009tx to a crt
i bought a vga to 3x RCA (component cable) now thing is it does not output video to a CRT tv
now i know you guys might say use the HDMI , but well i cannot afford an LCD currently or in the near future, and yes the tv isn't any larger stands at 20 or so inches (sanyo)...flat (or as near as flat can be...)
i am using the latest NVIDIA drivers from their website,....i have previously in the past been able to setup dual/clone displays with NVIDIA cards....(using DVI/VGA desktops) but apparently this does not work, the Display driver picks up the TV but sadly no display
i have tried
No interlace (on laptop and tv)
reduced Reso to 10x7
flicker at 60Hz
the tv shows a bluescreen and it flickers....but no image of the desktop
my qs to you all is.......do i need any specific cable (as this one states it is a DVD player to projector...but shouldn't it work anyways?) any other settings i may have missed
(my duty roster would not allow me to get to this shop for another week+) i do not have VGA to RCA or svideo

I recently bought a dv2, and immediately clean-installed the RC of Windows 7. I tested out YouTube and Hulu HD video, and they both were choppy/unwatchable, which I figured was understandable given the laptop's relatively slow processor and flash's inefficiency.
But when I tried h.264/VC-1 HD video, even 720p, I can't get it to run at any decent speed and using the CoreAVC decoder, videos seem to run at full speed, but are garbled beyond recognition and frequently loop a few frames, while the audio plays normally. For a computer that is supposed to run blu-rays, I think this is ridiculous, and I must be doing something wrong, right? If anyone with a dv2 can point me in the right direction, it'd be greatly appreciated. The next step is to restore Vista and see if that fixes my problems, then upgrade back to Seven. But until then, can anyone tell me their setup and results for HD video/Flash HD?

I'm having an issue with my Pavilion dv9200cto video (Intel Core 2 2.0Ghz, nVidia 7600Go) It started a while back, I'd get strange artifacts on the screen while using it, the screen would sometimes get covered in lines and I'd have to power down and reboot.
Then it started with BSOD on reboot with the NVLKDM error and wouldn't boot into windows unless I went in in safe mode.
Then I found that I could delete the nVidia card in device manager and if I just kept the Standard VGA adapter driver then it would work, albeit ugly and 1280x1024 looks bad on a widescreen monitor.
At that point I had Windows 7 on it and hoped that it was just a driver issue. Tried numerous drivers from nVidia, HP, Laptopvideo2go etc... I loaded up Vista and had the same issues no matter which driver I used. I loaded up XP and had the same issues no matter the driver again.
I did pull it apart and found that the fan/heatsink on the CPU/Video cooler were completely clogged up so overheating seems like a likely culprit.
I'm assuming the video chip is shot and I need a new motherboard -
If I buy a new motherboard are there any others that are upgrades to what I have or do I just buy a replacement for the current mobo?
