HP Compaq Presario CQ61 Display :: Black Screen On Power Up - BIOS Corruption Failure?
Nov 15, 2012
I have a Compaq Presario CQ61 Product: VM9496Q2X Model: CQ61-319WM, that has a black screen when I power up. The wifi button stays red and the caps lock flashes twice. I believe this indicates a BIOS corruption failure. I have tried resetting by unplugging and removing the battery, and holding the power button for 30 seconds. I have tried the f8 key and the esc repeatedly at power up. I have also tried pressing the windows and B key along with the power key but nothing worked.

I have a compaq presario CQ61-420US with similar problems below, except I have a black screen, fan turns blinking lights are the same (num lock and cap lock) but they are flashing continuously every second or 2. I have tried the hard reset with the ram fix, connecting an external monitor, changing the battery, and the power adapter to no avail. I also used compressed air on the vents just in case was stuffed with dust since it will overheat and may cause problems, but nothing.
One option I can think of is purchasing a new MotherBoard, but I'm trying anything else before that.

I have a problem with my Compaq Presario CQ61-325ED. It won't boot. What I see is a black/blank screen, with the numlock and capslock lights blinking twice every couple of seconds.
According to the blink codes, it seems the BIOS has been corrupted [URL] .... Sadly, no adequate solution is given on that page.Win + B or Fn + B at startup does nothing, pressing all the arrow keys gives me a continuous blinking pattern (edit: I can't seem to replicate this anymore...). I have also tried creating a bootable USB-stick with a BIOS update, but I don't think I have done it correctly, for it never gets activated (the light on the USB never turns on).
Also, removing/resetting the RAMs or just one of the RAMs does not work. Neither does removing/resetting the CMOS battery. How to successfully create a bootable USB-stick with BIOS update for CQ61-325ED?

HP Mini 210-1000 ... Actually it's HP Mini 210-1060EV PC
From product specifications: Display: 25.6 cm (10.1") Diagonal WSVGA LED HP BrightView Infinity Widescreen Display BID (1024 x 600)
Battery has been dead a long time. My display drivers and BIOS have recently been updated from HP website. After a power failure and a restart, the display looks weird. It was shifted about an inch downwards with a black border at the top, over which the mouse will not go, and the taskbar is not visible as is off the bottom of the screen.
When I go to Screen Resolution from Windows by right clicking on desktop resolution is set as 1024x768, when I click on Advanced Settings, Monitor tab, Monitor is set as Generic Non-PnP Monitor (1024x768 60Hz). When I change to 1024x600 it looks blurry and stretched vertically, but the screen is still shifted downwards with black border on top.
When I enter Intel Graphics Settings I can do the same changes as in the Windows dialog box (640x480, 800x600,1024x600,1024x768).
In the Aspect Ratio Options when I select Fullscreen (No-Border) the Black border is fixed but the screen still appears streched vertically but the screen is cut off at the bottom with no Taskbar visible. Re-installed graphics driver as well as a few Monitor Type Drivers from windows, nothing changes. When I turn the notebook on, the HP Quickweb screen also appears as a 1024x600 stretched vertically with no black border at top but going off the display at the bottom.
It appears that Windows and Hp Quickweb see the display as 1024x768 60Hz after the power failure. Before that, I had installed some Windows Updates but nothing related to Display drivers. I only had a System Restore point from earlier that day (very low free hard drive space?) but that didnt do anything.
Guessing it's a registry/driver problem since no pixels are bad and the black border on top is fixed in Aspect Ratio Options when I select Fullscreen (No-Border).

The screen on my wife's presario notebook suddenly went black on sunday. She was surfing on the net when that happened. The screen wasn't completely black, it was kinda gray-ish like the LCD light was still on. The power LED was also still on. She turned the notebook off and back on and the screen stayed pitch black. The power LED comes on, the fan is running and also the DVD drive starts running but neither do I see a picture nor does the HDD LED flicker.
I tried different things like unhooking the power, uninstalling the battery but nothing helped. However after a couple of restarts I was able to make it show the 'Compaq' logo twice. Each time the HDD LED flickered a couple of times and then the screen was gray again.
On the Compaq website they suggest to re-set the RAM module(s). Does that sound like a possible solution to anybody? My wife is going to check if the notebook is still under warranty (She bought it in August last year) before I try to mess with the RAM.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60. The Display does not appear to be working. When I turn on the laptop the display remains black. No boot up screen, nothing. I can't go into the bios because I have no screen. The screen remains black. The harddrive appears to be working and all other functions appear to be working but I am not sure because I have no screen.
Is this a known issue with the Compaq Presario CQ60?

How to connect my Presario CQ61 Notebook to a Philips TV via HDMI under Windows 7. I checked the settings in the control pannel in Windows 7 and set them to multiple displays. Under the NVIDIA control panel I cloned the displays. Nothing happens, black screen on the TV with "no signal" message. The Notebook is recognizing the TV correctly by the way.
I already spent 2 hours on this. Tried various articles online, but nothing seems to work. The HDMI cable is OK. I successfully connected a Playstation console to the TV. Seems it's not a hardware issue, but something with the settings of my notebook.

just wondering about doing a CPU upgrade on the above laptop, the current CPU is an AMD Sempron M100. I'm not to up on my AMD cpu's so not sure what the best upgrade would be. Also, what does the bios support, as there are many CPU's that will fit the S1 socket, but I guess not all will be supported in the bios, so does anyone have any knowledge on this.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-313us notebook, and i've just installed windows 8.1, then i realized there was a problem with my Internet, every time i open a website, i always get either a page like this: [URL] ... , or i get "Error: Gateway Timeout", though i can get to the website if i refresh a few times, but it's extremely slow.
Also, i can't download anything, I've been trying to download the .NET Framework 3.5 through Windows Features and windows Update, but in vain. I think that proves that the problem isn't from IE. I also think that it's the wireless driver's fault, but i'm not sure, and i don't know what driver to download. I tried updating it from the properties meny, but it says it's up to date. My wireless adaptor is Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11b|g|n, V3.0.1.155.
Update: I think it's worth noting that when i download with utorrent, it downloads normally with my regular download speed, but other than that, i can't download anything.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-417SA Notebook PC operating on Windows 7 Home Premium. The laptop freezes at random times, sometimes minutes into use or an hour into use. It is not caused by clicking a certain program or file. I suspect freeze issue maybe caused by hardware failure, possibly the HDD.
Here's a few observations of the laptop and the things I've tried to diagnose or fix it. During a typical hang the HDD LED light is constantly lit. Have also had both blue screen and black screen freeze. No error messages. Hard drive gets very hot. Entered BIOS and run both Primary Hard Disk Self-Test and Memory Test using InsydeH20 Setup Utility but it passed both.Laptop has been fully reset to factory settings so it can't be because of high CPU usage.
While idle the CPU usage is usually in the range of 13%-25%, with a rare spike of 53%The hard drive is a Western digital Scorpio Black 2.5" 320GB SATA. The laptop is unused so wiping it back to original settings wasn't an issue but I would like to get it back to a useable standard.

I have a "compaq presario v6210US" which worked great for a while then it just shut itself off and restarted and the screen stayed black. Now it keeps restarting itself but the screen stays blakc. I can hear the fan and hard drive and everything else running the way it's supposed to. I heard that this has happened to a bunch of other people so it sounds like a defect to me. How do I get it fixed or do I just pull the hard drive, toss the Presario and get a competitors laptop?

My troubles are as follows:
I started working on a presario v6130us laptop with a blue screen. The owner thought it was due to a virus when she opened a email. I went and wiped the HD and reinstalled windows XP pro. Had the darn thing working nicely.
Then I thought he computer was running a lil slow, so I decide to update the bios. From (I believe) v.07 to ver.29 from the hp website. At the restart, it never restarted, so I restarted it by pressing power button. Went into the same ol blue screen loop. The stop message is 0x0000007b. I looked that variable up on the microsoft webpage. It says it is a Win 2000 unmountable boot device. Prior to this message it was Stop 0x000000ED.
Does anyone know how to roll the bios back, or what could be causing this problem? I have done a quick HD test. so far it has passed and is now doing the "executing" test @ 20% complete. B4 the bios update, the test would say FAIL 1- 07.

I am currently stumped on troubleshooting error code lights for a clients hp compaq cq62. I have tried the hard reset, reseating the memory, and even plugging the notebook directly into the wall instead of a surge protector with the battery removed. I cannot find any solution on the HP site or any other forum site for that matter as to what a solid caps lock light and a solid orange light on the f12 key.
Currently I am thinking the client is might need a new back light for the system or a new cpu.

I have an Aspire 8920G laptop.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled (with no installation nor recovery disks delivered).
I accidently hit the arcade button on the cinedash panel, instead of the power button. The computer started directly up into arcade deluxe, after a short install. Nice feature
I thought, and choose to exit arcade through the exit feature. Then I noticed that the computer prepared to hibernate, but instead it shut off after it finished.
After turning the computer on, a small complaint about improper closing the computer popped up, and I choose to start windows normally. Now the boot loader ran, and when I expected the logon screen, instead I met a black screen with a working mouse cursor. I eventually had to force power down, since crtl alt delete didn't work.
Since then, all boot options, safe mode etc leads to the same black screen.
Vista looks like it's going to boot normally then goes to a black screen with a working mouse pointer. The hard disk light just pulses every couple seconds.
I tried extracting the battery but it doesn't work.
I tried to alt+f10 - Vista Recovery page, so it gives me menu called "Edit Boot Options". There is the path to winload.exe and this:
"Partition: 2
Hard Disk: b8f0ffa4
[ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN
]"
That's all what I have when I press ALT + F10.
I could type "Enter" = nothing happened
"Esc" = shutdown the system
"F8" = go to recovery page.
Hit f8:
Goes to a "Vista system recovery" or something like that, i'm not quite sure what its name was. Anyway it had about 6 options, including "Get windows to check for and correct the faults on your disk" in a little bit more high tech talk. And "Restore to a earlier point". Since the "Checking and correct faults" said it was recommended, i thought i'd go for that.
It ran its tool, told me to click the restart button. Runs it again, tells me to restart again.
And now it enters its final state - Its virtually dead :|. If i turn it on, it will go to the black screen, that talks about an improper shutdown, with the options for Safe Mode, Safe mode with networking.. etc. Any of these 4 options all result in the same black screen displaying only the mouse cursor.
I was not trying to install or upgrade nothing, was not trying to change form vista to xp or so.
I have not deleted any hidden partition (as far as I know...)

I've now spent many hours of research and troubleshooting to try to fix this issue, both via external sites through google search and here on Acer site.
It is the same issue reported many times: Acer 5552g laptop powers on, but does not boot up -I get blank / black screen, fan sound briefly, then idle, and that's the end of. Also, when I do manage to get it going (booting), it seems a totally random event...

Currently whenever I startup my laptop the display flickers. If windows fully boots or I try to enter one of the startup menus the will flash briefly on the screen and then the display will return to and remain black.
I am able to run an HDMI cable to my TV and it seems to be running fine other than going black with the occasional distorted picture of windows booting.

I have connected my monitor to an external monitor. It works fine. Only problem I have ( and a little irritating one) is that the external monitor picks up display only after Windows is loaded. Pre-OS screens like BIOS settings, GRUB loader (I have Installed Linux ) doesn't show up)
Is this an issue with BIOS? Because, when I connect HP dv6000 to my monitor, I can see the BIOS screen as well. I am sure the problem is not with the monitor.
The BIOS is responsible for detecting displays before the OS is loaded right? I checked BIOS settings and there is nothing to indicate the display ports/devices (however, this page on HP website shows a BIOS screen "Advanced" which apparently has those settings)
