HP/Compaq :: Dv9500t- Died.... Upgrade
Apr 12, 2010
I have the dv9500t that died yet a third time because of the nvidia problem.
I am wondering if I can buy a new laptop, which would probably be a base model, and then successfully transplant the CPU and RAM and HDD into the newer laptop. My CPU is still WAY better than anything out there in todays base models (C2D T7300 4MB L2 Cache, etc etc) and I have 4GB of RAM installed. I have 2 HDDs, one is 160GB, one is a 320GB HDD that I plan on installing onto the new laptop.
So basically, RAM and HDD specs arent important to me in the new laptop except that my current one from the dv9500t fit, as well as the CPU being able to fit in the new laptop.
I need to buy a laptop asap, but it sucks that my 3yr old dv9500t is still margins better than today's base models... i was hoping that today's base models would be as good or even better than my current model

HP Pavillion DV9500t got damaged when i was playing game 3 months ago. the Main problem for the hp is Graphic card gone and the motherboard might not work either. the pc had been sent for repair once 7 months ago due to the blackscreen (LCD screen with no background light) and this happened just before the end of the 1 year Warranty.
I bought it at end of June 2007.
currently, i dont know if i still possible to get it repair without pay anything.

I want to know this two things:
1st- Does HDX 18" Laptops get as hot as dv9500T? My dv9500T (as most hp laptops) used to get pretty hot under normal circumstances (about 60C just browsing) and as almost everyone here I use Rightmark CPU to downclock my CPU and use a Cooling pad to keep temperature under control (44 - 48 C). I'd like to get an HDX 18" but I'd like them not to have the same problem, if somebody owns one, please share your experience and also, Does HDX 18" laptop support more than 4GB Ram?.
2nd- In the case I can't get an HDX 18", I might want to upgrade the Processor. What is the highest proecessor a DV9500T will support? See my signature to check on my current dv9500T config.

I have a DV9500t with a nvidia 8600gs card in it. Last Friday my wife brought it to work and when she was leaving she just shut the laptop and stuck it in our notebook bag. When she got home we went out to eat and when we got back we took the laptop out and it was very very hot and smelled a little funny, apparently the damn thing didn't go to sleep when my wife closed the lid. Great HP workmanship there.... Well I let it cool off and turned it on... It started showing little red dots all over and when it tried to boot into windows there was multi colored lines up and down the screen. I could boot into safe mood and see everything, but the display was still a bit screwy show little red dots and artifacts everywhere...
So I've concluded that the video card overheated and I'm lucky it didn't start on fire, but at the same time the laptop is unusable. Is there anything inexpensive that I can do about this? The warranty expired a year and a half ago and I certainly can't afford a new laptop at this point. This is very frustrating since I thought the laptop would last at least another year.... Does anyone know if the video card can be replaced?

I own a dv9500t model which has been working fine since I bought it in October 2007. Today out of the blue the screen went black while I was working on the computer. What does this mean? I am still able to use the computer via an external monitor.

I bought this hp dv9500t laptop in oct, 2007 and is now out of warranty.
I have updated Vista to SP1. Yesterday, I was playing a song in windows media player while the lid was kept closed. Suddenly, the song went into trrrrr like sound and the machine rebooted on its own. After having rebooted on its own, the display went into lowest bit depth (6 bit/600x480!), I had to manually change it to 32 bit / 1680x1050.
Then to my shock, I found, the video adapter was not Nvidia and it defaulted to default generic VGA driver in display properties.
Later I tried reinstalling the nvidia driver and even upgraded it to latest from laptopvideo2go site. But nothing solves the issue, it never identifies any nvidia display driver.
Looks like the display card got corrupted after upgrade to sp1.
What options do I have now? How much will it cost me to get the video card replaced, if it is determined that the card is corrupted? I am in India now, so I am clueless where I need to send this machine to get serviced?

I've had my DV9500t for nearly two years now and can say that for the most part I've been happy with it.
I've been reading a good deal about the overheating 8600M GS issues and have personally noticed that under load the laptopo does get extremely hot. Usually when using intensive applications (modeling, simulations, games, etc) I try to use a desktop but sometimes I do use this laptop.
I'm planning to get to get a cooler, but was wondering if upgrading my BIOS could also actually help as well. I’ve seen a few posts about the different versions for the DV9500t, but am wondering which version you have all found to be the “best” in terms of thermal management and overall performance (if any difference).
Right now my laptop is running the original F.09. I’ve held off on updating the BIOS thinking if there’s nothing wrong why bother, but now I think that maybe it is time to update, just in case.

So I came home today to find that my beloved HP dv2108tx that worked perfectly well last night just died on me. When I turned it on, the power did run but only gave a blank black screen and emitted 3 screeches after that (1 long one followed by 2 short ones).
I got so nervous because there's so much valuable information in my hard drive. And so I googled and googled and surprisingly found out that about a million other HP users out there also faced this same problem as I did. In fact, I should consider myself lucky that mine lasted as long as 2 years and 3 months.
A few websites I found suggested replacing the Mainboard e.g
[url]
[url]
The problem is, this could very well cost me $300-$400 and based on previous posts, it seems that this mainboard replacement might not be long-lasting.
what I should do?
1) Invest on a new mainboard...and hope for the best that this time it willl last for another 2-3 years
2) figure out a way to fix this myself without replacing the mainboard --- is there a way?
3) Just throw away this laptop, forget about it, and curse HP forever
Either way, I will need a way to retrieve important information from my harddrive asap.

HP NW8240
XP Pro SP3
While using the laptop, the screen suddenly went black. I tried to power off which i have set to autoend tasks, so should switch off without any prompts. However this failed. In the end i have unplugged it and tried to reboot.
The laptop comes on and shows the hard disc light flashing briefly. I get no bios or HP screen showing and have tried removing the hard disc but still a black monitor. The laptop definitely not loading into XP as my wifi and volume lights arent lighting up at all.
There is no lights showing on the monitor, and from posts ive read there is no faint sign of anything on the screen ( backlight issues).

So My DV9700 has died. I've read MANY threads across the internet about this issue as well as there being a suit against nvidia for bad chips.
Of course my laptop is out of warranty which leaves me with an interesting option. Rather than paying HP to fix it and waiting weeks for the laptop to be returned I'm doing it myself. Not a problem except for needing the parts.
I spent most of the afternoon searching google with no luck but maybe someone here has a parts catalog with the answer. Other than crossing my fingers that an oem replacement board will survive is there an aftermarket option or a company that sells a modified board with extra heat sinks or something?

I bought a dv9730nr about a year and a half ago and never had any problems with it until a week ago. I was playing PES 2010 and suddenly, after the menu screen the screen went to black, everything froze and this weird "color" barcode appeared on top of the screen. I freaked out and rebooted the laptop, but it didn't even show the bootsplash and the "barcode" still appeared on top of the pitch black screen... after a couple of tries, I could get it to show the bootsplash and actually managed to system-restore it. Then it crashed again and I had to repeat the process.
When I actually got it working, I tested it again with a different game, and this time it gave me the nvlddmkm driver error and a BSOD. After the reboot, there was this ugly barcode again, so I had to repeat the "process" (rebooting time and time again until bootsplash appeared). Though it worked for a couple of days, yesterday I tried to watch a video and it froze, no nvlddmkm error, just the black screen and the color barcode. It took me hours to get around that and when I thought everything was fine (as fine as things could be, anyway), surfing the net and watching some images... bam, the screen went to black and I had to force a shutdown. Again, ugly barcode on top after I rebooted... but this time I have been trying since yesterday to get around it and do a system restore but to no avail - every single time I reboot, there's this black screen with those vertical color lines...........

I have some issues with my video since I upgrade the nvidia drivers from the nvidia web site. I removed the drivers and I reinstalled the original ones with the same results.
Does the Windows drivers upgrade also upgrades the video firmware as well?

I thought this was odd, since I didn't shut it down last night, just closed the lid. I hit the power button, and the laptop looks like it trys to start up, and the harddrive spins up, but it won't boot.
I see the lights come on for about 5 sec. then it shuts down. I don't hear any of the fans spinning up at all. What could it be? I tried booting off the battery, and the power supply(which is almost brand new) nothing works.
It's not even posting. I don't see anything on the screen at all. Is my video card dead? I used it for about 3 hours last night and it was fine, I didn't have any artifacting, and the computer was running fine.

My laptop died last night and i dont know where to begin a diagnostic.
I will try to explain what happened and what it is doing to the best of my ability but my sentence structure and grammar is not all that great So please bear with me.
this is my machine...
Inspiron XPS Gen 2
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 770 (2.13 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB),
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Video Card 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 6800 Ultra
2 gigs of Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (from newegg)
I ordered this machine 7/04/05 and has worked awesome since it arrived at my door step. I have done 0 mods to it. The only thing i have swapped out is the ram.
Over the holiday weekend i had a strange graphical haze happen, everything was hazy and not very clear. So i logged on to a game and the strange haze followed. Figuring the machine was bugen out i rebooted. Doing this fixed the problem. Now fast forward 10 days with no problems. Last night i logged out of Wow for the evening, upon logging out my screen was filled with small hazy Z's that stretched the length of my monitor and my system was locked up, so i just help down the power button and shut down for the night.
Today it booted up with no problems and i was reading the news. I went to log on to Ventrlio to chat with a few friends and found it jacked all up. I had this running last night when my system crashed fyi. I got up for a few and later noticed the hazy Z's are back. Then the monitor stared to flicker on then off randomly until it went black.
Now 4 hrs later i have gotten it to boot twice for a short periods of time. The black background lights up but shows nothing. The hard drive seems to run for a moment but i cant really tell if its running. The lights come on along with the power on light. A few of the times i have turned the unit on and 5 minutes later i will hear the windows loading sound but nothing graphical happens. I opened up the unit hoping i had a loose connection, nothing was loose and everything was fairly clean.

It has finally happened, my graphics card has after 3.5 years of steady and faithful use, finally given out.
Since a picture says more than thousand words, here is two:
What happens next? I have put Arctic Silver on the GPU, more than 3 years ago, so if anything it extended the GFX's lifespan, will Dell still give me fuss about this? This is the infamous G91 series with the production fault, so i have kind of wating for this to happen.. And i have more than 1.5 year left on my NBD warranty..

my XPS was running fine, just had the MB replaced a couple months back due to the GPU failure... all of a sudden it powered down instantly, just went dead, it was running on ac when it happened.
Now:
The power button does nothing, running on battery or ac.
If I plug it in with the ac adapter the little blue led on the adapter turns off, and won't come back on until I unplug it from the computer and re-plug it in the wall.
There is a slight smell of burnt coming from the vent, may just be mental...
My normal 1 year warranty is dead, does it sound like anything I could replace... wondering if it is the MB since I can get no power at all and the ac adapter seems to short out when plugged into the computer?

I did a restart of the laptop and after the initial bios load screen I get.
"A disc read error occured"
Does not give me any options just a black screen with that message.
I have removed the hard drive and reseated it to no avail.
The warranty ran out two weeks ago

My Hard drive went kaput and right after I had put about 4 hours of paper research info into it.
I spent hours trying to get the information off the drive, but now have an additional issue: The external drive I borrowed from my friend was being used with Apple OS X. SO, when I plug it in to this win XP machine, it doesn't recognize the drive or show any existing files!
Does anyone know a program or a way to help me verify if my attempt to recover data might have been successful? The only other option I can think of is, after getting a new drive into the laptop, installing linux hastily and transferring to a different drive. And no, the friend that I am borrowing from is a few hours away at the moment. I need that research for Monday, and I feel the pressure!
This is the first hard drive that has ever failed on me inside of a year, and its true what they say: It happens only when you suddenly have data that is actually important.

My 9400 MB died this AM! Suck!! Was looking at replacement MB on Ebay, seems there is are a few different PNs to choose from. Anybody know the most current part number Dell produced? Prices dont seem to bad compared to a new laptop.
Actually, While Ive gotten this thing dopwn to parade rest. What is the best combo of MB Vid and CPU to make. I have look ed a nd most parts are still cheaper than a new box. I hve serched these forums and read MANY MANY ides for mods but all the configurations are too numerous to keep track of.
This is now a project and I want to upgrade my gaming capability while on thre road for my job. If you all will just give me what you think are the best options I will then reserarch rather than start from scratch.

I just had a blue screen of death (dump screen) for the third time in 2 months and after reboot, i get this screen:
What can i do now? I would like to recover the files i have in the HDD, as i know if i send this to Acer, they'll wipe out everything or replace a new HDD. Can i open the laptop and try to plug the HDD to some enclosure to get the files out?
Will that void the warranty?
In the BIOS, i see:
HDD Model Name: None
HDD Serial Number:
ATAPI Model Name: None

I bought an Acer 5672 WLMI a little over 2 years ago. I thought the Acer offered good value for the money. The specs were Intel Core Duo processor T2300, 2GB RAm, X1400 ATI Video card, 120gb HDD, 15.4" screen, winXp Pro -cost of the system was $1800 + tax (Canadian dollars).
The 5672 always ran hot. It was almost hard to keep it on my lap it sometimes got so hot. I was not even gaming. I was just doing standard web browsing/word processing. The bottom of the latop got so hot that is basically disintegrated most of the Microsoft WinXP Certification sticker. I pulled the bottom cover off and there was nothing obstructing the CPU Fan. I also would intermittently get a green/blue? line about 3-4 inches wide down the middle of the screen. This green/blue line was intermittent. Generally, the screen problem and the heat problem became worse as the 5672 became older.
After 15 months the hard drive failed. I put in a new 160gb HDD. Acer never gave me the original winXP CD and the Win XP Certification Sticker had burned itself off. I reinstalled another copy of winXP Pro that I had. The laptop ran ok for a bit, but then the wireless starting acting up...I would get dropped wireless connections and sometimes it could not detect wireless signals that I knew were there. I stopped using the wireless completely.
After about 18 months the CPU fan started to make an intermittent noise. At approx 2 years, the CPU fan failed completely. I thought I could replace the CPU fan, but realized the CPU was an intergrated unit with cooling tubes and cooled the CPU chip in addition to some other chips on the motherboard. I checked the Acer web site and did not see this part listed (not many parts were listed). I checked on ebay saw a few posting for a new fan/cooling unit -cost was approx $170. I debated whether or not I wanted to spend $200 and time fixing a 2 year laptop...that always ran hot and had some potential screen issues.
For a few days I ran the latop with no CPU fan and used an external fan to try and keep everything cool. I had motherboard monitor and could see this was not working and temps were getting high. I was debating what to do, when the laptop just died. The screen displayed a bunch of funky colours and then it just died. I was able to power it up again, but a few minutes later it did the same thing (funky colours on the display and shutdown by itself). I tried rebooting and nothing..it was dead. I pulled the hard drive and checked that it was ok...............

Ma lappy will be 2 years old in august, but it seems battery alredy died.
I do carry it around quite a lot, but most of the time I work on AC power.
Few weeks ago I had to work on battery and to my surprise laptop went into hibernation in less than 5 minutes after power on. Filled back to 100% and tested -- battey indicator counted percents down to 0 literally inf front of my eyes.
Is there a way to determine battery status? Might be some cells that are damaged? Any Idea what might gone wrong?
Laptop has 2 year warranty, so it's still covered for few months, but I doubt that is also true for battery only.

My 15 or so month old M1530 was running fine, all of a sudden, while plugged into the A/C Adapter, it just stopped working... shut down, it appeared. I attempted to re-start it, to no avail, the power button doesn't work. I unplugged it from the A/C Adapter, still no good... I checked the surge protector, functioning fine...Â
So, I grab a couple of the power adapters, the one @ the desk and the travel one, and try them both; when connected to the outlet the nice little green light on them is illuminated, however, upon plugging either of them into the laptop, the light goes out. I ordered a replacement battery, HOPING that the battery was the problem, still nothing...

I was a happy owner of my XPS M1530 for almost 10 months in a row now. I had a luck and received M1530 with LG Philips LCD -what a joy.
Unfortunately LCD backlight started to dim out and I had to call Dell Czech for a replacement.
I requested to replace my faulty LCD with the same type (LG Philips) and CSR guy told me that's not a problem ordered one for me and the next day service man arrived. Replaced my faulty LCD no questions asked. Before he left I asked him if it is really LG Philips as I requested because the new one had quite less contrast and the viewing angle was also somehow diferent. We found out that the new one is manufactured by Optronics and is grainy.
Found a comparison pic on the internet: Grainy of the left, LG on the right
Well I am not happy with this one, it is much worse LCD than LG was. Called to Dell asked for immediate replacement. CSR guy told me it is not possible as Dell does not quarantee ANYTHING - check out our terms of sale. Did you get WXGA+ 1440x900? If so then don't complain was his answer.
I requested to put into my CRM that I am not satisfied with the new one and that I feel cheated as I was promised LG LCD over the phone. CSR guy promised to pass this info to his supervisor and that he will call me back. Two days passed no-one called and I am gonna call them on Monday again .....
