Dell :: 1330 Overheats In Hot Weather Only
Sep 2, 2009
My 1330 laptop (with 8400m graphics) seems to overheat and become unstable when the ambient temperature is high. In the Bay Area where I live it is generally fine, but on a couple of recent summer trips to Phoenix and Vegas the hot weather made it unstable;
it would often run very slowly or just crash continuously. I've also seen this instability during a recent spate of hot weather here in the Bay Area, and it also happens when I try videoconferencing with skype even in mild weather here. I assume the videoconferencing just stresses the hardware more than anything else I do (I am not a gamer).
It seems clear to me that this is a heat issue, but because it usually manifests while travelling not at home, a fan pad doesn't seem like an appropriate solution

the default (only) clock icon points to 10:15 (arbitrary) the default (only) weather icon says 73 degrees and sunny. I want non-arbitrary icons for the clock and weather in a theme that I can pull off of cydia. or- it doesn't have to be a full blown theme- just the animated icon replacements will do.

I'd updated my BIOS from A9 to A12 and the temperatures of my 1530 are shooting thru the roof. I'd left my laptop idle for an hour with a download in progress. when I came back, the laptop had shut down and upon restart the system the CPU temps touched 80 . The fans weren't even turning on.This wasn't a one off case, it had happened before. I've since reverted back to A09 and things are back to normal.

My 1530 has recently been overheating when left idle for a while(30 min or so). When I come back I find that the fans stop working, the system overheats and the laptop restarts with blazing temperatures.
In order to turn the fans back on, I have to shutdown the laptop and then switch it back on

My Acer Aspire 5610 constantly overheats and shuts off. The fans arent clogged or anything and there's nothing that I can see that would prevent them from cooling the chips. My battery goes low quite fast even though I have it set to power saver.Buttons on my keyboard don't work very well, I can't use the mouse/touchpad or scroll buttons to scroll. And now when it performs POST, it has a lot of short beeps...like beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep...no break or pause between the beeps. And it keeps going, it doesnt allow me to turn the computer off by pressing the button either, I have to take the battery completely out. The only way to pass the POST and beeping, I have to press F2 as if I wanted to go to setup, then it loads up correctly.

My 2 month old HP ENVY 17 (1050ea) constantly overheats and shuts down. It is sitting on a wooden table with nothing blocking the airflow.
It has just been back to HP for repair, they replaced the Heatsink and fan and updated the BIOS (thou the bios appears to have no updates that affect the operating temperature). The machine will suddenly switch off and then on re-boot the bios displays the message 'System Temperature (90D)'.
On return from repair it seemed to be a little better, its system temperature was now peaking at about 77C rather than the mid 80s that it would peak at before repair. The first shutdown occured after about 20 minutes (running a simulation). After this it could be made to shut down after just a few minutes running prime95, then just web browsing will shut it down once it has been hot.
One of the service engineers suggested that I am expecting too much of the machine to run for any period at maximum power. It was also suggested that I need to purchase some sort of external cooling system to try and keep it working. So is there a way to manually underclock the processor ( and maybe GPU?) to keep it running?

Whenever I play a game, sooner or later, the computer just promplty shuts down. The part of the computer which holds the graphics card is then generally very very hot, which leads me to guess that this is the problem. Note that it sometimes can run for several hours without complications, but other times it wont even take half an hour. It's getting very frustrating and this combined with a lot of other issues makes it an altogether very unpleasent experience using HP.
I have updated the bios, but not changed anything in it - no overclocking or anything.

Acer Aspire 9504.
First of all it runs in Windows completely rock solid. I have ran stress utilities for over 24 hours, and the system is completely stable.
My problem is that it is very unstable before windows loads. For example, if I simply leave it in the BIOS setup for 5 minutes the computer will just power off. It is also quite hot underneath. This occurs also if I boot from DOS (or other e.g. XP recovery disk) boot disk to run some utilities - the system will run for 5 minutes or so, and then just power off. The time that I get before it powers off decreases if I immediately switch it on again, suggesting an overheating issue. I did not have this problem when I first got the laptop 3 years ago.
This problem is really annoying as I want to run some low-level utilities to repartition my hard disk and also possibly reinstall windows, but this problem is preventing that.
Any ideas? Perhaps some strange software that I installed? ACPI config? Memory issue? BIOS issue? Computer is hot in several areas under where the CPU / TV tuner / graphics / memory are located .
My system spec:
- Pentium M 760 2GHz
- Ati X700 256MB graphics
- 2GB crucial RAM (2 x 1 GB DDR2 533 CL4) (upgraded from 1GB over a year ago and fully tested to be working)
- Newest BIOS from Acer installed
From system information:
OS NameMicrosoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS ManufacturerMicrosoft Corporation................................

I've bought a Lenovo G575 three years ago, my warranty isn't active anymore. The fan in my laptop stopped working yesterday, and now when I do something that is CPU intensive, the Laptop shuts down because of the overheat.
Is there a way to buy a new fan? Should I open the laptop and take a look at the fan, to see if it can be fixed without changing the fan.

I've read other forums on similar issues, but I can't seem to find one that matches mine exactly.
System: Y410p with
1tb hdd
24gb ssd
intel i7-4700
8gb ram
64x windows 8.1 (came installed)
Problem:
When I put the computer into sleep mode, it goes into sleep mode without issue. It has stayed in sleep mode for a maximum of 8 hours, but usually before it hits this long the system will turn on. It seems to run random processes and overclock the processor as the computer gets very hot. It will do this until the battery dies, or if plugged in, indefinitely.
While it is doing this I have opened the lid, pressed every key, including power, with no response. Once, and only once, upon pressing the space bar, it had actually come to the unlock screen as though it truly was in sleep (except it was still overheating and on). Otherwise my only option is hard shut down.
I've just gone around it for a while now by shutting down every time and not using sleep. But today I had put it in sleep, and placed it in my backpack where it nearly cooked itself to death.I have tried:
-I have checked the wake_armed, which currently display NONE
-I have checked last_wake
-I have fiddled with hybrid shutdown.

I'm having for 2 years already a Dell Latitude D630. It works great
Now my sister want also a Dell laptop, and she wants XPS 1330.
I'm sure about reliability of Latitude series, since D600 and D630.
XPS 1330 has very cool design, price is OK too, but I'm very concern about GPU issue. After reading a lot of topic about replacing mainboard and especially heating problems with NVIDIA GPU GS?8400 should I still consider buying now XPS 1330?
I'm not going to buy with NVIDIA video card but Intel Integrated X3100 because sister doesn't play any game
Is there any serious issue with XPS 1330 and Intel X3100 on board?, heating, crashing etc..? I want to buy her a stable laptop like mine - D630.

after excessively researching every possible laptop that could fit into my budget and for my needs I finally went with the Dell XPS 1330. Upon receiving my order (after patiently waiting for weeks it seemed)-- I opened the box and realized there was no case or complimentary headphones. Only after researching a bit on the forums did I realize they were no longer included. After setting up the laptop and running some games--- and after almost 2 weeks of ownership I must say I am impressed.
pros-
-Laptop has a beautiful bright display
-can play most games i throw at it (for some strange reason Company of Heroes slows down considerably)
-slot loading drive
-relatively quiet (more on this on the cons)
-touch screen controls
-pretty quick start up
-extremely light weight---and aesthetically pleasing---looks like a beauty
-surprising decent battery life---get over 3 hrs with each charge--and can be configured for more with dimmer screen.
cons-
-makes some strange noises when just doing ordinary tasks---it almost sounds like a ticking clock.
-keyboard is also loose and makes some bad noises when clicking on certain keys. Overall the keyboard is simply sufficient---but doesnt really meet up with the price paid.
overall-
I would say for the money 1215$ with 2 yr warranty is fairly unbeatable. An apple macbook was a consideration for a while---but Dells cant be beaten for the price-
overall I would say as a 1st time dell xps laptop buyer I am fairly happy. Only reason that i would consider returning it is for the crappy keyboard--and clicking noises. But i also feel lucky that my xps didnt ship with any worse problems.

I don't know if you guys have seen this, but Dell is now offering up to 6 gigs of 800 Mhz RAM vs. the prior max of 4 gigs of 677 Mhz RAM.
Does that mean that the older 1330s are capable of six gigs or have they made some kind of update?

i want to leave my xps laptop connected to my tv (through the hdmi connection) for long periods of time, and i want to be able to leave the laptop screen off and closed while i do this.. also just for extra information the laptop came with vista installed however i installed XP pro instead.
anyway, when i initially got my laptop i could press the function key and tv-out key and it would output to the tv with the laptop screen still on, pressing it again would still output to the tv and turn the laptop screen off, and a third time would turn off tv-output and have just the laptop screen. i.e. pressing fn and F8
1 time - tv output with laptop screen on
2 times - tv output with laptop screen off
3 times - bring it back to normal with laptop screen on and tv out off.
my problem is that when i press it two times my laptop screen goes off, however no tv signal is sent to the tv anymore..
i tried updating my geforce 8400GS drivers and installing and re-installing the video device but it didnt change anything.

i currently have two 1330s... one with LED and one with CCFL
The LED is a toshiba LCD2306, the CCFL an AUO Optronics, the CCFL looks MUCH better which seems to me total nonsense since the LED is supposed to be better in all aspects.
I will be contacting customer service. Should i be asking specifically for the samsung LED?

As the subject states, my fan will not turn off. Everything was running great, then about a week ago, after installing MS updates, my fan will not turn off no matter what I'm doing.
I'm sure it was an update but am not sure how to go about fixing. I know I can just start uninstalling updates till the fan turns off but if there is a better way that would be great.

My xps 1330's battery just went completely dead (past the one year warranty period obviously) and considering how stupidly expensive the dell replacements are,
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with non-official replacements. Some places seem to sell a generic version of that battery for about half the price.
So the question I'm asking myself now is: 'what's the catch?'

I've owned the XPS 1330 for a little more than a year, and because of a drop recently I have had to change the hard drive and reinstall vista. I believe I didn't properly install vista on to the computer and now it doesn't restart normally as it should, sometimes it will show a blue screen or it will restart continuously.
I called tech and because I didn't purchase extended warranty I'm restricted to certain telephone lines, and they would require that I pay up a sum to have them go through and check the problem.

I've got a 1330 with a T7250 processor, 4gigs of ram and a 8400GS.
I run my notebook all day long undervolted (tested stability a lot using orthos) so temperatures are less.
I also use RMClock to max out the cpu frequency when connected to AC (so that it stays locked at 2 ghz whenever i am in AC mode)
Also, my 8400 gs is Overclocked to 600/825 from stock 400/600.
The thing is the following:
when running COD4, every once in a while my frames drop noticeably. I then went to investigate this and using RMClock's monitoring tool i noticed that the frame drop was consistent to a throttling of the CPU.
However, whenever i test out my pc with ORTHOS or rthdribl i get higher temperatures than when running COD4 and the CPU doesn't ever thottle itself...
As you can see, this is a pretty strange thing because temperature is NOT being the "throttling factor" over here, as it is almost all times. I also have the gpu copper mod applied and haven't ever passed out 80 degrees on the gpu (which are pretty normal temps for an xps1330, specially overclocked)
What do you think could be causing this? It is really bugging me a a lot. Could it be maybe unstable voltages or something?

I was streaming a TV show from my XPS via the HDMI port to my HD TV. All of a sudden it froze. Couldn't Ctrl+Alt+Delte, couldn't do anything.
Shut it down with the power button and left it for a few minutes, re-booted and all I got was a white screen followed by strange lines on the screen.
What I have garnered from the forums that with the Nvidia GPU is burnt out or the motherboard needs replaced.
Its out of warranty so I wonder how much it would cost to fix or is it fixable if I bought the parts myself. I seen a link on the forum about replacing the Copper mod but surely this won't work if the GPU is burnt out?
