I'm really debating on which laptop to get, since I've heard a fair share of both good/bad reviews from both models.
I'm not really a heavy gamer, just a little Counter-Strike 1.6 and WarCraft III.
I was looking for portability with the 1340, but the aspect of full 1080p on the 1640 keeps pulling me back!
I'm just worried that the 1640 will be too big for me to be considered "portable" and more of a desktop replacement. .
I just got my system the other day and I didn't get it with the blu-ray drive. It seems it wasn't even on the configuration menu when I ordered my system.
Can anyone check our their device manager and tell me the blu-ray drive you currently have? I'd like to buy one and install it myself (Don't worry I'm pretty tech savvy).
Which one should I get, 1340 or 1640 . Both have same specs (except for GPU and wireless thingie) :
CPU : Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 2x2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB, 3MB Cache.
Chipset : NVIDIA GeForce® MCP79MX
Memory : 4GB DDR3 at 1066MHz.
HDD : 5000GB 7200rpm SATA.
Optical : DVD+/-RW Slot(DVD/CD read/write)
Battery : 56 WHr 6-cell
Software : Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
Does the 13" weigh the same as MacBook 13", is the 16" too heavy ?
I am really curious if any other 1340/1640 users have run into a similar situation.
The problem:
when typing on the lappy, sometimes the text jumps to wherever the I beak of the cursor is. At first i thought i was accidentally touching the touchpad with the base of my thumb, but now i'm sure thats not the case
I've already tried uninstalling dells drivers, using the drivers from synaptics website, changing the sensitivity of the touch pad, using the touchpad with no drivers at all (windows drivers only)...
What are you using? I'm looking for some good neoprene slip cases and bags. This will help me to help me decide which laptop to go for as theres not much difference in weight between the two laptops with regards to portability.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI know a few of you have 8800GTX SLI setups right now. What kind of temps do those cards hit under a heavy load such as Crysis? Are any of you overclocking them yet? How many fans does the M1730 have, and how loud are they on high speed?
View 15 Replies View RelatedThe LCD is bright and clear when viewed head-on, but the slightest change in vertical angle causes the brightness and colors to vary like mad, making the system unbearable to use on my lap.
I tried to figure out who made this particular LCD, but the intel graphics driver makes it hard to get the EDID info.
The only thing that sort of worked was MonInfo:
http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm
And that only worked by getting the raw data string from the EDID structure, which indicates the LCD is part number "NU412.
Do you think your card is outdated? Are you having any problems playing any games with it? I'm not asking about the hottest new title games, there are few computers that can play those anyway.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm about to pull the trigger on either the 13 or the 16. It's really come down to how well the above to games run for you (those are the two that have me hooked at the moment, so i'll be familiar with how I'm used to it performing compared to your settings).
I'm currently on an Asus G2S-A1 thats overheating like crazy. Time to upgrade. It's specs: 2.2Ghz core 2, 4gb ram, 5400rpm hdd, 8600m-gt 256.
Will the XPS13 with a 2.66ghz, 4gb ram, 7200rpm hdd, and the N10-M 512mb gpu perform equal or better then what I'm currently on? I ask because I'm having trouble finding a comparable benchmark.
This wont be my primary gaming rig, it will be portable entertainment. BUT it does need to be able to run on par with what i have or better to entertain me Should I be happy with the 13 or do you think the 16 would be better. The only reason I'd go with teh 16 is for the Radeon 4670 1gb if the 13 has problems with wow and L4D.
If you play WoW or L4D on the 13 (or even the 16) I would GREATLY appreciate the peace of mind i would get from hearing back what your FPS are and what detail/quality settings you're getting them at.
I'm considering undervolting my Studio XPS 13 that is arriving tomorrow due to the well-known heat issues of that laptop.
I was just wondering if anyone with other Dell laptops (or the Studio XPS 13 ) have undervolted, and if they've run into any problems and how they like it now.
all m170 owners out there.. what is the latest game that you have played on your system and how good does it play? the last game i had bought and played with mine is warhammer dark crusade.. haven't been gaming for awhile and interested in buying a very good game..
View 15 Replies View Relatedi have a overheating issue with my note and i am kind of desperate about it...
I am trying to eliminate the problem right now.. And i am thinking about the fans.
Now i wanna know if the situation is the same with you m1710 owners.
When i (using fangui) put both fans on full speed i am mostly hearing the one on the left (the one close to the cpu), and the second fan is actually pretty quiet...
Is this true with your notes too ?
Or are they making the same amount of noise?
My impression is that the right fan is a lower power fan or something, maybe that's my problem ?
do any software programs (notebook hardware control comes to mind) recognize your additional multiplers? Say if you boot up from bios with it set to 2.33ghz, does nhc automatically recognize the additional multipliers allowing control to 3ghz+ etc?
The reason I'm wondering is that if it does, it may be the case that even without bios support the t7600G may be able to be overclocked on 1705s (I don't believe anyone has modded the 1710 bios to work in the 1705s, right?) ... although the utility may be small because t7600gs are only available through dell right...just some pondering
I have an M1710 with a T2600 @ 2.16GHz and looking to possibly upgrade.
My questions are:
1. What have you upgraded to & how much did it cost?
2. Is there list of possible CPU upgrades for the M1710?
3. Where does my processor lie in that list?
4. Is there room for A LOT of speed improvement? Marginal?
5. Is it easy & is there a "how to" somewhere?
Is the heat overly blown out of proportion with just the 9400m(no SLI)? Is it significantly more than a m1330 with a X3100?
What is the average battery life you get with no gaming(surfing, YouTube, music, word)?
Is the vent going to pose a problem if used on a bed or non-flat surface?
Have the Latency issues been fixed with the audio completely? I've read mixed reports.
I'm thinking about this because Dell offered me a system exchange for my m1330(T7500,LED,Intel X3100,250GB) and said I would be given a SXPS 13 since m1330 is no longer being shipped.
I got a XPS m1330 with an LED screen. On low brightness, I can see dark spots across the bottom of the screen.
They are usually visible on a white background, like in "My Computer" window. So, I had my screen replaced and today the tech came out and put in a new LED. I am still having the same issue, so I am wondering if they are all like this.
I could not see a thread for us with the budget range Inspirons so thought I should make a thread, and if a mod can make it official.
Anyone got the 1564 here?
Mine is due to be delivered by 4th March hopefully and current status is in production.
I just got my 1700 back from a temporary 3 month stint with my brother (his PC died and I decided to let him borrow it until something came along to replace the dead desktop.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI was hoping the nice people here could help me. I was wondering how many fans are in an M1730? Is it more than just what's on the GPU? I was also looking for those little rubber screw covers on the LCD front bezel.
Does anyone know where to buy them? I currently own an M1710 and I know there are also 2 plastic screw covers on the LCD. Is it the same with the M1730?
did you have any problems with the laptop when you first got it?
i figured it would be a good idea to do a survey and see what would be the ratio between defective laptops vs non defective ones.
If you own an Intel X-25M SSD, please post your benchmark score(s).
I am having an issue with my 4K read/write. It seems as tho they are 50% less than what they should be. Nevertheless, post your benchmarks. I want to know if any other DELL owners experiencing the same problem as i do..
I would have posted this in the Hardware SSD Thread, but that thread is just out of control. I am mostly interested in the Random 4K reads/writes and this is probably the most important attribute in everyday computing for regular users like us.
X-25M G2
X-25M G2
on a side note, can someone tell me why my 4K reads/writes are so much slower than what they are supposed to be?
I see a lot of "can't run CS4" and "can't run 3dsmax" comments, but not so many "CS4 is smoking on my machine" comments. Is poor performance in certain apps a constant with M6400s? I hear a lot of good things about the display, but it won't really be worth it if the machine is slow.
View 10 Replies View RelatedSo I haven't even had my laptop for a year yet (will be a year at the end of May). I bought a separate 9-cell somewhere in late June or early July.
I've noticed as of late, that my battery life is nowhere near as long as it used to be. With all my tweaks and once it was sitting at the desktop idle, Rightmark would regularly say I have almost 6 hours of charge left. As of today, I don't even see 4.5 hours, sometimes barely 4 hours.
I checked the battery by holding down the button at back; the lights go away instantly and then 3 of them light back up.
I definitely didn't buy this thing with the expectation that it would lose over 30% of its capacity in barely 10 months of use, especially considering a new battery costs between 100-150 bucks.
It was expected to ship on thr 10th and I actually received it today. Dell is the best. But anyways, here are just a few questions to you current owners:
1.) How can I adjust my RGB settings to perfection and what settings would you recommend (Please don't post a thread of a 10 pages that I will have to read through).
2.) I purchased the 9 cell. Do I want to fully charge it, then let it die all the way down so the sensor is correct or what would you recommend?...........................
What do you think of the resolution on a 16" notebook? Is it too high..? Dell's offering a 1600x900 version now; I'm wondering which to get .....

I haven't put in my 7950 gtx yet because when I threw the one in that I had here it was DOA so I had to send back to the seller to replace, so the new one should be here in a week. Anyways here is the deal . .
Everyone is claiming since the 7900 GSX pulls such great scores in 3dmark05 (simular to the 7950) it is about the same. Here is the difference. When yall run 3dmark it defaults to a low resolution test. So here is an example. Im pulling low 9k with my 7900 GSX at default resolution. So I got a full version serial number for 3dmark05 and switched the resolution to 1440x900 and ran the tests with that. This should really show the memory difference and power of the better card.
The 7900GSX pulled 4262 at that resolution.
From what im finding online the 7950GTX at 1440x900 resolution pulls around 6700 at that resolution . If you have a 7950GTX test it out and post that instead.
Im sure at 1920x1200 resolution the differences would become even more apparant. So there is the final answer.
High resolution gaming (native resolution on our lappys) will show a big difference.
So I decided to buy a cooler after reading everything in the cooler review threads and grabbed an Enermax Aeolus Aluminum Notebook Cooler w/ 250mm Fan. I only have an extended battery and
I can't really tell any dramatic difference so far. I am just wondering what the masses have decided is the best for our particuliar notebook!
