Dell :: 1645 - Take A Break At What Temperature?
Feb 4, 2010
this isnt 1 of those heat issue threads, im just looking for advice. Just want to say i love the notebook and would like to take care of it.
i do mostly surfing, chatting and tunes but theres also work and gaming. Regular temps run around 50c and im not to worried about that. during work (but mostly gaming) it goes up to 68c. This is all with a cooling pad and mini fan blowing at it .....

I'm about to purchase a Studio 16, but I notice there's no Pause/Break key. How do you issue a Ctrl-Break command? Eg, to abort a macro

My Inspiron 1520 has been having a random issue. In a quick break down here is the problem(s).
When ever I turn off my wireless switch, the WiFi light sometimes will go off immediately or 5 seconds later - but the light will return on when no wireless activity is initiated and the switch is off. (Note that in the BIOS my wireless settings is "all" so everything shuts off when I hit the switch.
My Wireless AdHoc setup is utterly horribly useless now. Out of the blue for no reason one day it's decided "I'm not gonna let the iPod touch connect to me to share internet access".
Things too note, I'm in a rural location, so I'm fixed too DIAL UP ONLY - don't tell me "upgrade to high speed" - it's not an option in this area, period. With that said, no wireless activity goes on within my household besides my laptop sharing it's rock'n 3KBPS dial up with my iPod touch (possibly my PSP if I ever get around to it) ....

Is there any way to simulate pressing the break key on the Edge 14 keyboard? Â I need it for debugging and to maximize the Remote Desktop window. Â Dell used the Fn F12 on keyboards that they removed the key. Does Lenovo has mapped this function to any other key combination?

My current CPU temp is around 61 degrees C with the CPU load @ 100%. I clean it petty often and I just recently (around 2 months ago) applied silver compound to the heatsink. Even though the fan is on, how come it will not go faster than "slow"? I can set it to high, but why doesn't it do it automatically? Is this normal for my 9300?

Basically I've been messing around with the OCing of my CPU since I've finally got all my temperature issues sorted. Firstly, I notice that my CPU temps at times are erratic, jumping/falling up to 10C at a time. Is this normal?
Secondly, my CPU temps after a short gaming session were
CPU1: 66C/ CPU2: 80C
This seems a bit strange to me. Does anyone know why CPU2 might be so much warmer?
Thirdly, related to the above, is 80C @ 3.4GHz good, bad or average? If I was running at 80C for hours can I expect this to do any damage? I know the CPU can handle up to 105C, however that doesn't mean something below can't cause damage. Confirmation on this would be great :-)

I have had my XPS M1530 for about 13 months now, never had a problem with it so far, however I am getting a little worried about some of the temperatures over the past few days.
I have been playing Fallout 3 and Anno 1404 a fair amount for the past week or two everything seems good, however my temperatures seem to be getting a fair bit higher than they were a couple of months back (May-ish) when I last spent a good amount of time looking at temperatures.
For example I played Anno1404 for about 3 hours on Saturday followed by 4 hours of Fallout 3 and the CPUs got to the high 80s and the GPU touched 95C! THM_ (from HWMonitor) hit 100C!
Now obviously I'm a little worried, it was pretty warm when I was playing (25C), but the thing that baffles me the most is that this has only been happening over the past week or so, before then my CPU rarely broke 80C and the GPU 85C. There also seems to be a loudish 'click' from the HDD when I turn off the laptop when it has been on for a fair while, again, this has only happened over the past few days.

I do have a question about the CPU temperature. I'm using CPUID HArdware Monitor (under 32bit Vista)to monitor the temperature and I am pretty concerned about constantly working fan (even when the cpu temperature is under 50 C).
The threshold under which the system goes dead silent is 44-46 C. Is that normal?

I`ve bought a M1530 in december, it was fine till february when the termal paste had become bad the temps were at about 50 C idle and 80 on load, I replaced it with MX2 Arcgic Cooling and went 8-10 C lower. But Everest and other software detect AUX Temp?
Idle 60- on load 100C and the temp from 100C drops down in a seconds to 60C when I switch from Counter-Strike to Desktop. My question is what is this AUX and should I be worried. It looks like a component with bad cooling.

I'm in a bit of a jiffie, my 1330 had some problems with overheating so I formatted but it turned out it was a piece of dirt stuck in the fan, anyways problem solved.
I thought.
Now, I get the slowdowns again, albeit not that severe. Now, when I open hwmonitor it only shows my CPU, HDD and ACHP. The GPUs temp won't show up.
I installed ntune, nada, same thing. What could be the problem, is the temperature measuring thingy broken I'm kind of worried that my 8400m gs is dying on me since it was a pos to begin with but I really dont feel like sending in my laptop.

This is probably the one hundred and second thread on this subject, but after searching for similar threads, I just couldn't get a straight answer.
The temperature of my Geforce Go 7950 GTX reaches almost 100 degress celsius (97 to be exactly, but I'm pretty sure if I let the stress-test run for a couple of more minutes it'll get that hot).
I don't have a problem with this, but since this is my second videocard (the first one died after three years, I guess due to overheating issues), I would like to know if I may expect this to happen again.
So, for all of the M1710 owners out here: what are your GPU temperatures after stressing it for, let's say 10 minutes, with Furmark (stresses your GPU really really hard)?
Please mention them in celsius, and with what program you read out the temps (some programs, like i8kfanGUI deducts 8 degrees of the real temperature).

There was a poll for idle temps, but I am more interested in your values for max temp for the GPU.
Setting: 8 mins of running Rthdribl on a M1330; HWMonitor read-out for max. GPU temp in Celsius.
Mine would be 104°C. After another 2mins the GPU clocked down, resulting in "only" 98°C.

So I know this program basically tortures your graphics card but how hot should it get on a stability test in 'Xtreme Burning Mode'? I just had my motherboard/GPU replaced so I am running some tests. After a few minutes of this test it reaches 90 degrees celcius. Isnt that crazy hot?

I have problem with my Dell M4400 it very hot (CPU temp ~ 50C), my system - Q9100, FX770 etc. I think have problem with heatsink systems. What I do? Perhaps, some people have Portable M4400 with CUP like me (Q9100 or QX9300). If some people have this CPU help me, please. Which serial number heatsink you have in your portable systems with CPU Q9100 or QX9300. I must change it but I don`t know serial number.

ive been getting a vibe that my M1330 may bite the dust soon or relatively soon although its been pretty great and ive been praying that it doesnt have the issue.
Anyhow, I installed HWMonitor and basically I get temps averaging in the low-mid 70s and sometimes in the 80s. The highest it has ever gone since installing it two weeks ago was 84 C.
So at what temps exactly should I start to get worries are 70s bad?
Then my external hard drive has decided to give me corrupt errors so I cant even backup my files now ...

It seems that everybody who owns an XPS M1530 has an extremely varied set of temperatures for their GPU and CPU. Now, I am a complete freak about my temps, constantly checking them and always worried they are too high. I scour the notebook review pages looking for a benchmark set of temps, but everyone either has overheating problems warranting a nice replacement (CPU 80+ GPU 90+), or they have chilled out systems that sound very cool (CPU< 69 GPU
TEMPERATURES
- CPU Min/Max Idle
- GPU Min/Max Idle
- CPU Min/Max Load (running ORTHOS, which can be downloaded here: [url]
- GPU Min/Max Load ( running rthdribl, which can be downloaded here: [url]
- Whether you were watching your temperatures in real time, or relied on a temperature report. (I suggest everyone does both and reports both results)
SOFTWARE
- The program you used to get these readings (I suggest everyone uses the latest version of HWMoniter)
- Power Setting in Vista (I suggest everyone uses High Performance)
- Bios Revision (I suggest people use the latest revision)
- Video Driver Version (Found in system information in the Nvidia control panel, state wether it is a modded, Dell M1530 or Dell non-M1530 driver)
SYSTEM:
- CPU Model and Speed (Txxxx, xGHz)
- Hard Drive Speed
- GPU Clock ("stock" otherwise write your clock speeds)
- 9v or 6v battery
Physical Ajustments
- Notebook Cooler (if yes, then write the model)
- Thermal Paste (if yes, what type?)
- Airflow and Surface (What type of surface is the laptop on? Have you propped it up to simulate a 9v battery? How high?)
- Ambient Room Temperature (If you can report these in degrees C, otherwise state your location and time of year with a general statement whether it is cold or hot)

Here's the background...
I recently received a new m4400 (with a T9400)and had a problem with one of the cpu cores running 6-8 degrees hotter at idle (not under load). When I told this to Dell technical support, they reordered me a new notebook.
Here's the problem...
I received my new replacement notebook. Although the cpu cores are now the exact same temperature at idle, once I start running some programs (simulation games, etc.), one of the cpu cores runs 7-8 degrees consistantly hotter than the other one. If I stop playing these games, both cores return to the exact same temperature .....

Lately I've been busy and haven't played a whole lot of games. Just the other week I notice my GPU temps went up on ilde. The fan would kick in ,to stablized the temp around 75 degrees then drop to 60 or so. The temperature just keeps climbing up till it maxed at around 75 degrees.
Iv'e already went and bought some air can blowers and blow all that dust and lints out. I even ensure it's clean by shining a flash light thur the top of the fans and look thur the vents to see if I can see the fan blades. All is clear but I'm still having then same issues. When I ran games such as RE5 it gets really hot sometimes reaching 95 degrees.
My palms sometimes starts to burn anyone encounter such act? Wondering if there's anything else I can do before calling DELL support!

My temperature at webbrowsing and idling is usually 36 degrees with my Zalman2000 at Balanced battery seeting.
However, sometimes, sporadically, the cpu temps go up to 63 for a real quick moment (a second or less) and comes back to the late 30's. Normal?

There is no clear mention of what temperatures are fine for the 1640. It would really be great if someone could sum up the optimum idling temp and maximum safe gaming temp.

i just wanted to know how high the temperatures on the m1530 can go until the computer shuts down ( for CPU, GPU, and ACPI )
I ask this because my lappy will suddenly restart after some stressing while OCing my GPU to 625 core, 890 mem. (no i dont want you posting that its my fault, that im an idiot, that i shouldnt OC this lappy and such)
Its usually stable when gaming (ie. Team Fortress 2), stays at 72C CPU and 81C GPU OCd, but when i try a heavier game ( EVE Online) it will restart after about 20-30 minutes of use.
