Dell :: Any Reason To Not Delete The Recovery Partition?
Oct 22, 2009
I have an m1530 and my Windows 7 is on its way! I currently have 10gb just sitting there doing nothing thanks to the recovery partition from the factory and I was
thinking of deleting that partition and creating a 50gb partition for windows 7 and having the remaining hard drive as storage for an easy future formatting environment.
1) Is there any reason to keep the recovery partition and am I safe to delete it and regain my 10gb?
2) 50gb might be too much, but Im not too sure what the windows 7 fingerprint is (15gb?). What is a good OS partition size for windows 7

I have Acer Aspire 6920 Notebook which came with vista home premium in 64 bit installed. I have made Recovery disks (3 DVDs) and had resorted to factory defaults several times by using the DVDs and not by Alt+F10 (at that time I did not know about alt+f10). I now have removed the 64- bit vista home premium and have windows-7 Ultimate RTM, Vista Home Premium and XP Pro all in 32 bit in three separate partitions in one single hdd. I have also done BIOS upgrade from 1.06 to 1.14. I have SATA mode set to IDE instead of the default AHCI due to XP not functioning under AHCI interface.
My BIOS shows hdd pw frozen by default though I have removed the hdd and set the BIOS to default twice. I find the Vista Home Premium in 64 bit OEM is a real pain since it has a lot of third party softwares – free and sharewares – which I have to uninstall every time (more than 20 of them) and therefore I tried to delete the acers recovery partition which is of 18 GB size and my Notebook with 250 GB hdd shows only 232 GB.
However, the partition is hidden and I have tried to unhide and delete the recovery partition with a number of third party partition softwares like Paragon, partedit32, Easeus, Norton, acronis, G-parted, macrium reflect, all with no success!
Now I request the learned members to give me a solution that will work, in simple procedure explained, to unhide the acer recovery partition and deleting it without disturbing my present OSes installed on the three partitions. Macrium does not show the PQ Service/EISA partition.

I've created a Factory Default Backup with a USB drive with Acer Recovery Management. I see this message which tells me I can delete the recovery partion to free up disk space after I've created the backup but it never gives me the option to do so.
Â
I DO get the option to remove the Driver Recovery Partition after backing it up to USB but not the 10GB Recovery Partition. It's a a HUGE deal on a system that only has a 32GB hard drive.

Going the clean install route and looking at the partitions, found this small Dell one. It's only about 40MB and uses only 400KB.
Looking with Gparted it's called Dell Utility and with Vista Disk Management, nothing but does say EISA configuration under status.

I recently bought an Acer 5610z from a family member that didn't need it anymore and it didn't come with any documentation or software save for the Vista OEM DVD. I proceeded to immediately wipe the HD and make a new install with Vista on a 20 GB partition and my remaining space reserved for programs and the like.
About 2 days later I realized I was missing space on my HD and realized there was a hidden partition for recovery called PQSERVICE. This is my first notebook and I had no idea how hard it is to find drivers and was having a hard time finding all the drivers and programs I needed (even from the manufacturer most of the drivers/utilities are for win XP).
I didn't make the recovery DVD's so I thought it might be possible to find the utilities or drivers on the hidden partition. I've unhidden it but I'm at a loss as to where to find them or if any drivers or utilities are even on it.
At this point do I even need the partition or can I delete it? I'd love to find someone with a copy of the DVD's at factory default settings but...

I wanted to install vista. I did the normal bootcamp procedure but forgot and extracted candy bar at the same time the partition was being created.after the partition was created and the message appeared telling me to insert my windows cd appeared, my mac froze. I held down the power button and forced shut it down. I switched it on again and windows setup started. Everything went on fine and i booted in windows fine. However , when i wanted to enter my os x partition, it would start and go up to the part where the rotating circle would appear. It continued rotating for a long time and then restarted my mac. I tried again several times and it did this. I then booted my mac from the os x install dvd and selected install os x on the windows partition. Setup failed. I launch disk utility and verify and repair disk partition (There was no problem when i did disk check). I restarted my mac and everything booted fine. I now have a new partition labeled "mac os x". I launched bootcamp manager and tried to restore my disk and get the error: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition: The startup disk must be formatted as a single mac os extended (journaled) volume or already partitoned by Bootcamp Assistant for installing Windows".
How do i format it in this format? Do i have to use the setup disk again or do i use disk utility?

Can the C drive be enlarged?
Can the hidden partition be emptied and made "visible"?
My laptop is rather new, and I noted that the C drive was pretty full already. I deleted many software items and added other software that I needed, but there isn't much left anyway. The D drive is largely empty however. Can the C drive be repartitioned? Is any special software needed to do that?
The hidden partition seems not to be of much use after one has made the 3 DVD factory default backup. Can it be deleted? Made Visible and used for something else?

I have a HP 2000 2b09wm. It just broke, giving me the error message saying in so many words that I needed a new hard drive. Guess the old one went kaput (even though I just bought this pc on eBay not a month or two ago). I have a new HD and a Windows 8 reinstall software from a dealer on eBay. I tried multiple routes in attempting to reinstall the OS resulting in as many dead ends*.The last thing offered up was to delete partitions in the new HD. I looked at an eHow page, How to Delete Partitions on a Hard Drive. It says to get a CD that includes fdisk.com. I burned super fdisk (2 MB) from SFbootablecd.iso and fdisk (40 MB) from fd11src.iso. I went to the BIOS to configure the boot order. I put Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive first, saved it and tried both CDs. It always just boots to a screen with this:
Â
Boot Device Not Found. Please install an operating system on your hard diskHard Disk (3F0)F2 System DiagnosticsFor more information, please visit: [URL] .....
Â
I even tried putting USB CD/DVD ROM Drive first…same results.
Â
So, my questions to you, I guess, is firstly, why are the fdisk CDs not booting? Did I burn the wrong fdisk? Secondly, do you know why my OS couldn’t be installed using the reinstall software? I’m assuming the software is legit and the computer did in fact originate with Windows 8.Â
Â
*A couple of the dead ends:
Â
Compatibility report - The computer started using the Windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade. Do not select [ICustom advanced]I to perform an upgrade. [ICustom advanced]I installs a new copy of Windows and deletes your programs and settings.
Â
Another route for Windows Setup, I get to this: Select the driver to install: Browse for Folder - Browse to the driver, and then click OK.It gives you the list under "Computer" which includes "CD Drive (E HRM_CCSA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5" (the reinstall software) and underneath that, the folders - boot - efi - sources - support.Picking just the E drive itself, message appears: Load driver: No signed device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK.

So. My notebook has an issue related to the screentouch. Lenovo's assistants says that if I have Windows 8 on my notebook. But I updated it to Windows 8.1. Now I need to downgrade to Windows 8 'till they fix my computer. I already have the Windows 8 DVDs, but before I downgrade I'd like to know:
Â
1. I'll be able to use OKR to restore a backup of my current system, with all my software and settings?
Â
2. I've partitioned my HD in order to keep personal stuff (media, data, documents) in D:, instead C:. OKR will erase the content of other partitions? Can I safely use it or D: can be affected?

I’ve just done a clean install of my Dell Vostro -- reinstalling vista and removing the recovery partition in the process. Outcome = a ‘cleaner’ machine with none of the preinstalled bloatware/c**p from Dell. (first time I’ve done anything like this, but followed a brill guide in the Dell section of this forum ).
I’m about to tackle my Mums Compaq Presario C310EA. The aim is to remove all the rubbish she has accumulated over the years, incl any spyware/ adware she may have, and generally have a bit of a clean sweep…. hopefully resulting in a faster laptop. I’m backing up her data, and moving some of my Dad’s stuff somewhere else.
Basically I want to clean up as much as poss, but unfortunately she has no xp disk, just the recovery disks (cds) she burned when she first got the laptop.
As she has no xp disk I guess the best I can hope for is to reset the laptop to the factory settings (?) .. not ideal, but I don’t think the (factory set) bloatware is too much of an issue for her – she’s not a heavy user.
Should I use the recovery partition for this, or do I need to use the cds she burned? .
I’d like to know the best approach – and can’t seem to find a set of instructions to follow.

I have a pavilion dv7-6b50ei notebook pc bought 2012. It always gives a command prompt pop up which doesn't stay long enough to read. I also felt there's a virus on it which my anti-virus couldn't solve so I tried factory resetting but when I restart and press F11 it gives an error(something like a boot.. is missing). so I tried my recovery discs. Disc 1 of 4 ran fine but disc 2 keeps stopping with an error.
Now the laptop doesn't load as I think the OS has been formatted during the recovery and don't know what to do. I feel disc 2 is bad too because it also gave an error while trying to copy it to a USB pen drive. I have also tried an external dvd and run the hp test on the hard drive; the hard drive passed the test. If I can get a new set of recovery discs, it would solve my problem.

When trying to restore the factory image (F11 during boot), the laptop seems like it is trying to boot the missing Windows installation (Windows boot manager error page). The partitions "SYSTEM", "HP_RECOVERY" and "HP_TOOLS" have not been touched. The ~15 GB recovery files are still there! The Windows partition (2nd primary) has been deleted and recreated as an NTFS partition. Since then the recovery process will not start.
Â
How can I restore the system from my intact HP_RECOVERY partition without using recovery DVDs? (I can't access them right now.)Does the Windows partition need some specific disk label? What is the magic that breaks the recovery when a NTFS partition is simply deleted and recreated?Peter

I made a DVD as a backup of the recovery partition on an Inspiron 9300. When I run recover.exe, I can see the *.gho file and I can select it. But for some reason, it says it's 76GB in size.
I can't select individual partitions so I can't copy it to the second partition. I know it's not absolutely necessary to have it but the old hard drive was crashing.

I've always assembled my own computers so this is the first time I went with a prebuilt computer and laptop from Dell. I"m curious what is on the Recovery partition that's 8GB (partition size is 15GB).
On my desktops, I usually partition 20GB out and leave it unformatted in case there's a system disaster that won't let me boot, I'll then use the 20GB partition to install a fresh OS

I recently bought the XPS 15 and decided to reformat the drive with a clean win7 64bit install using the drivers CD to assist leaving the Dell recovery partition in place
I may now be selling, so attempted a Dell factory restore from the Dell restore partition using F8 on reboot
Following the manual, I hit F8 but cannot see anything relating to the Dell recovery options only win7 recovery options
I did upgrade to the latest bios from the Dell XPS 15 drivers site but surely they wouldnt have removed this options
I have no recovery CD/DVDs either. Why I cant see the F8 recovery options and whats the best option to factory restore?
