Dell :: Comparing My M6400 To The New MacBook Pro

Jun 12, 2009

I was in a bad mood the other day, so I lashed out in an angry blog post:

The new MacBook Pro sucks: http://bit.ly/bT0dr

I thought other M6400 owners might appreciate it.

Sony :: Z: 1080P Or Not Comparing Resolution/DPI

Mar 9, 2010

Many folks considering the Sony Z have been asking the question of whether or not the "Full-HD" screen offered in some configurations/countries has "too high" a resolution, given the relatively low 13.1" screen size. While I can't answer that question for you, I thought I'd post a little table that can help to understand on a comparison basis where this sits, given current products:

As you can see, this walks through the spectrum from 24" monitors through the Sony Vaio P, which currently offers the highest DPI setting that I'm aware of on any currently shipping portable PC.

A few interesting observations:
For those who are accustomed to using E-Ink panels, the Z's full-HD screen offers essentially identical DPI.If you've ever seen a Sony Vaio P in-person, its admittedly very high DPI is indeed challenging for folks who don't have great short-distance vision.Even the low-resolution version of the Sony Z has a DPI that's higher than 18.4" 1080P notebooks. One source of debate relates to whether or not the Vaio Z's resolution is too high. Critics state that "magazines are 600 DPI+, how could you not read a much lower DPI"? The answer is that we're undergoing a critical transition.

The "problem" is that those who've used computers for years are actually accustomed to seeing pixels. Traditionally, operating systems and user interfaces have "assumed" a pixel density of around 100 DPI. What's changed is that we're beginning to undergo a transition from traditional displays to much higher density displays. Part of this challenge, led by E Ink, is how to effectively replace paper. In that context, viewing individual pixels is actually undesirable, while rendering fonts with authenticity is the top priority - precisely the top concern of most publishers.............

Dell :: M6400 And The M6400 Covet? Whats The Difference?

Jul 17, 2009

Yup me again, in my hunt to determine if M6400 is right for me as it costs just about as much as a used car, I want to make sure its a good investment before I buy it.

What is the main difference with the M6400 and the M6400 Covet?

I configured both with the same specs and the Covet is about $900 more in price?

Does orange paint really cost that much?

Apple :: Macbook V Macbook Pro (My Short Review Based On 2 Hours At PC World's Stand)

Feb 5, 2009

To start I should remind everyone that i'm not a mac user. I have never owned a mac or used OSX properly before today. As such, my opinions should be taken as coming from someone who has much knowledge and experience as far as PC's are concerned, but who is a total mac n00b.

First Impressions

When I first walked over to the Macbooks I was quite taken aback. The build quality is out of this world. In fact, I immediately walked over to the latest PC laptops to compare and immediately thought "manufacturing FAIL". Really, the Macbooks are italian sports cars, and PC's are 30 year old farm tractors to use the typical "car analogy".

The Macbook

I really only had any interest in the Macbook when I first went to the Apple stand, but came away with the intention of buying a MacBook Pro. Let me explain:

The MacBook's build quality is awesome. It's solid, no creaking plastic or flexable build, completely and utterly solid. Awesome.............

Apple :: 15" Macbook/Macbook Pro With Integrated Graphics For Less

Mar 7, 2009

I have been speculating over this prospect giving the direction that Apple took with the starting price of the 24" iMac (upgrade everything else and downgrade the VRAM).

I mean, this is something I would like to see, but I wonder if it is a smart move on Apple's part given how much they make off the current MBP's with the so called Apple Tax.

And, if they made this move, one has to wonder if it still would be considered a Pro.

Apple :: Macbook, Macbook Pro Software Update 1.2

May 9, 2009

I downloaded this updated for my unibody Macbook Pro, and I think it's pretty vital. However, it gave me this error when I tried to install it: "You cannot install Macbook, Macbook Pro software update on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.5 or newer." Now don't tell me that I have selected the wrong partition to install the update, or that I need to update my OS to 10.5.5 because I already have 10.5.6 and I chose the Macintosh HD partition to install the update.

Apple :: Refurb MacBook Unibody Vs MacBook Pro

Sep 12, 2009

So I'm definitely getting a 13" Macbook or Macbook Pro. Apple has some great prices on refurbs so that's probably the route I'll be going however I'm having trouble discerning the difference between the 13" Aluminum Unibody standard macbook and the 13" Unibody Macbook Pro. From what I've read they both have the upgraded screen, they're obviously both unibody, both have the large button-less trackpad, and both have the 9400m. They even have the same dimensions and the only difference I can see between the images is a slightly different case bevel (also the firewire and sd card ports, both are useless to me).

Unfortunately, none of the Apple stores or BestBuys in the area have a non-pro unibody 13" Macbook for me to actually handle and compare. So, basically, what makes the pro version with the slower cpu and smaller hard drive at the same price point worth it?

Apple :: Disk Image From Macbook Onto Macbook Pro Hdd

Jul 6, 2009

If I make an image of my hdd from my white macbook with disk utility onto a hard drive I take out of a unibody macbook pro will it work and boot properly?

I will do this by taking the 250gb hdd out of the unibody macbook pro and putting it into a sata external usb hdd enclosure, then making an image of my current 120gb white macbook and writing the image onto the 250gb. After, I plan to put the 250gb hdd back into the macbook pro and boot it up normally as if everything from my white macbook was just copied onto the macbook pro.

Dell :: My M6400

Oct 23, 2008

my M6400 is here - just wanted to post some first impressions.

X9100 - 3.06ghz
4GB DDR3
Quadro 3700M
1440x900 WXGA+
Wireless 5300
Bluetooth 370
DVD+RW slot load
Silver Color
Backlit keyboard
Webcam
2x 80GB 5400rpm drives

2 Intel X25-M 80GB SSD drives will be replacing those 80GB's.

First - my first thoughts are that this system is Fantastic!

The screen is great - its an LG, fantastic colors, no dead pixels. Typical viewing angles for non LED screen, not great, but not noticeably bad either.

No noticeable bleeding, no graininess - very happy with the screen.

Ran 3Dmark 06 (1280x800, stock drivers) - 11,619

GPU temp was around 80 C - not bad at all.

So far, very happy. Putting the SSD ddrives in now - will post more thoughts as I do more. Will post pics ASAP.

Update 1: 2 80GB SSDs are in place - this has Intel's Matrix Storage which allows the creation of one RAID1 volume (which I will use for valuable data) and a RAID0 volume for the rest of the space - this is very nice - get the benefits of both types of RAID in one system!

Update 2: The power brick is completely absurd. Its HUGE - 210W. The good news is that I plugged in a 130W from a M4400 and although I get the popup about the AC adapter not being at least 150W, it does charge the battery and allow the system to run. To me, this is an acceptable alternative to lugging around the giant brick, at least for most things on the road - Later on, I will test the system with this adapter and see what kind of slowdown is caused.

Pics:

RAID Setup:

Next to a M4400 (that I believe I'll be returning very shortly):

Next to an older E1705 - these are virtually the exact same size - its astounding what new tech can cram into the same space

Apple :: Old White Macbook To Macbook Air

Aug 12, 2009

She has a white macbook with leopard I think, and has a separate partition in which she has boot camp, she uses specialized software that can only run in windows (doesnt run in vm). She got a new macbook air but wants to keep everything intact.

Do programs like duper clone drives with all files intact, including partitions? Keep in mind that the windows side is more important, installation of this software can only be done remotely from Russia, so it's a bit of a hassle if we screw up, we have to contact IT at a specific time and get them to do it.

Would I have to take the drive of the macbook air out? Or can i just clone to an external hard drive and then move that to the mba hard drive, in target disc mode or something.

What do you think? which one should i buy?

I really wanted to buy Alu one before i hear about slanted keys and loose battery covers(i know %99 of them don't have that, but it's hard to risk when there's no way to fix it in here), because there's no Mac center in my country and i'm SO picky.

Dell :: Dead M6400

May 27, 2009

Whilst working away at my desk, M6400 docked it just powered down.

Pressing the power button causes it (the power button) to light briefly and then go out. Pressing FN+Power (as requested by Dell Tech) does nothing at all.

I've tried it with another PSU (I got 2, one with M6400, other with docking station) - and if you plug the PSU in, and then hit power on the laptop - the blue light on the PSU goes out - and doesn't come back on till the power is cycled. The M6400 does nothing during all of this.

The PSUs work just fine with my D820.

Dell techs are coming tomorrow to fix it. I'll let you know what they say!

Is there a way to slow down the fans or have them off for longer?

Is there a compatible fan in the market that is quieter?
