Dell :: Prices Other Than US?
Jul 13, 2009I was recently viewing the Dell site of my country of residence, which is not the US.
Considering this the prices should not be in dollars, this is not stated anywhere in the site but for example if I go to Dell Mexico prices are displayed in Mexican pesos,
If I go to Dell Austria the prices are displayed in that local currency.
But there is one specific country which the prices are just to cheap to be real for the local currency, should I buy then? Or is Dell going to come to me and say that the prices where in dollars, although there is no U$ or something similar.
Dell :: Different Prices For Different Colours? Why?
Jul 11, 2009I was customizing a Studio 15 on the Dell Malaysia website when I noticed something I thought as strange and a little unfair.
Under "colour options", the Mike Ming/Derek Welch designs cost $70, and the Product RED ones were $90. This is fine by me and most people - you're paying for the art.
For solid colour options, Jet Black was free.
All the other colours (Plum Purple, Spring Green, etc.) were $20, except Flamingo Pink which was $60 - that's nearly the same as the art ones! What gives? I read on the forums that pink is one of the cheaper colours in India.
Does Dell sell the solid colours at different prices in all their online stores?
Dell :: Studio Xps Prices Rising
May 23, 2009Around the 1st of May the prices for the xps 16 were quite reasonable with my customised system hitting out at about £1100 with the 10% coupon, due to my dad being a I-must-see-it-before-I-buy-it person we didn't get it right then. Ever since though, the prices have been racking up siginificantly (just to get the RGBLED screen it costs £245 now). Is this just because Dell feel that they can charge this much because it;s in such demand at the moment or are they planning to have a huge rebate in the near future or is this going to continue untill the the sales decrease to a point of having left over stock?... or is this even something to do with the new graphics they are planning to put in in the near future so that they can slowly ramp up the price s people don't really notice and then charge the same for the better graphics while bumping the price of the 3670 card down large amounts to get rid of the stock?

Maybe the supply will increase to drive the prices down, although I don't know where they would be getting the equipment.

Jun 29, 2009back in 2005 I bought an Inspirion 6000-D. A few days ago a cat spilled coke in it while I was out of the house. It was destroyed. Thankfully, I had the Dell accidental damage warranty (which I'd forgotten all about.) Here's the specs on what they're sending as a replacement.

Is it ok if I use a 90W, 19.5V, 3.34A charger instead? I'm using it right now, charger getting hot though. What do you think? Is it safe to continue using this charger with lower amp rating?

Feb 7, 2009I get idle temps of 65-70 CPU and 70-75 GPU and gaming temps of 76-80 CPU and 85+ GPU when gaming.
Right now i've been leaning toward the method of spraying all the vents with compressed air, is there anything else I can do that doesn't involve taking apart the laptop?

Feb 8, 2009add Dell to the growing list (HP is another) who doesn't care about Canadians nor Canadian customers as they restrict the options compared to Americans and what is available to U.S. customers.
E.g. M4400 has way less options for Cdn customers compared to U.S. customers. American customers can order 15.4" WUXGA TrueLife RGB LED display (1920x1200) while Canadian Dell customers are limited to only a 15.4” WXGA (1280x800) LED Display.
Dell :: XPS M170 CPU Lower Volume Whine
Jan 6, 2008I have a 2ghz P-M, 2GB RAM, 7800GTX equipped XPS M170 and never really took attention to this. It has CPU whine, and when you scroll webpages, it slows the scrolling process and emits the higher pitched intermittent whine until you stop, then it resumes a lower volume whine.
It's not really noticable unless in a quiet situation, but it's very annoying to me in such situations, especially because it limits the scrolling speed of pages and things in programs.
I've reformatted several times and i'm pretty sure its either the CPU or GPU whining. Gaming eprformance is unaffected.
Can I call Dell and have them do anyhting about this? I don't have Bluetooth, as some other topics have said works, but I don't think I should have to buy a module to have my CPU stop whining.

Dell :: Lower Resolutions Available In Inspiron 1720
May 10, 2008Unlike most of you here (probably), I'm an old guy who doesn't run his displays at native resolution. I typically selecting something lower so things are easier to read. My 4:3 machines at home and work are set up at 1024 x 768.
I'm considering an Inspiron 1720 with anti-glare 1440 x 900 display, 128MB NVIDIA 8400M GS card and the standard Dell driver which, according to Dell Downloads, is 174.31 for Vista-32bits. I assume that's the driver Dell would install if I ordered this machine on line today.
I tried chat will Dell sales but, after repeating the question several times, they finally admitted the only thing they could tell me was that I could configure it with 1920 x 1200 glass, the opposite direction from which I wanted to go. They suggested I contact Dell Tech Support, but one can't get through to them without a product code for an in-warranty notebook.
So, here I am asking whether anyone has an Inspiron 1720 configured this way. If so, does that combination of video card and driver permit selecting 1280 x 800 and/or 1024 x 640? I don't want to get stuck with a resolution that results in distortion because it isn't in the screen's native 1.6:1 aspect ratio.
Dell :: M1730: Lower Quality Or Defective LCD Panel?
May 21, 2010I purchased a Dell M1730 laptop a couple of years ago. A few months after I received it, the original LCD panel was shattered in an accident.
I shipped it back to Dell and they replaced it with a new Samsung panel (not sure what it had before) which looked just as good, except that after a couple of months it developed a one pixel wide red vertical line 80% of the way up from the bottom of the screen near the left side.
Because the line wasn't very distracting (only showed up on certain colors like dark grey and dark red) I lived with it for a while, but I recently decided I should get it fixed since my warranty is running out this year.
I emailed Dell recently and they sent a technician to my house while I was at work (my wife was at home) and he repaired the M1730 so that the red vertical line was no longer present.
I'm not sure what the exact nature of the repairs were, but he did mention to my wife that apparently when my panel was previously replaced, they had only used 2 of 8 screws .....

Nov 16, 2009I don't think I'm losing my hearing, but it seems like 80% volume now is the same as 50% volume before on my MBP 15 after the 10.6.2 update. I checked my sound output and it is set to internal speakers, which I think is normal(?)

Jul 13, 2009question concerning the WUXGA screen on the 17" macbook pro. The questions may sound pretty basic, but I've only got experience with 1280*800 =)
Can i put the resolution of the screen on, let's say 1440*900 if i chose to? Or is it really THAT resolution (1920*1200) that is supported only?
In the case it is possible: does it look like a normal 17" screen with a native resolution of 1440*900
In the case that it is not possible: how small are the letters? I looked at a 15.4 inch screen with 1680*...? and i thought it was pretty OK. Is it comparable with a 17" 1920*1200?
Most of the time the laptop will be used for programming, and a game from time to time (but from experience i know games can be set on lower resolutions, resulting in ugly stuff, just the way i like it).
Sony :: Z Series LCD Specs
Jan 25, 2009I'm very happy with the LCD on my new Z555 and thought I would share the details after profiling the display. I was looking for this information myself and couldn't find much so here is what I've figured out:
The temperature of the display on it's own is about 6300K but deficient in green (too magenta). The color is consistent with either graphics adapter.
I have no way to measure the color gamut but it does appear to be at least as wide as my Electron Blue CRT and with more color contrast. As I found in another thread Sony is calling it the full range of the NTSC which is slightly larger than adobe RGB, though it's never stated clearly.
Since neither adapter's driver allows setting the brightness independent of the color I could only set the white point using the drivers and had to rely on the rather coarse range of the FN keys brightness with contrast at default. I tried to get more contrast out of the display by playing with the driver contrast adjustments but in the end it just complicated the color adjustments for no apparent gain.
The best black point I could get was .24 cd/m and the highest white point was almost 325 cd/m -- both excellent values for a laptop.
In the end the 6500K profiles I settled on had a black point of .37 cd/m and a usable brightness of 197 cd/m. This is over 500:1 contrast ratio (if I'm figuring this right) and is excellent for a laptop.
With a profile associated with each adapter (intel & nividia) Vista seems to correctly load the proper profile if the speed/stamina switch is changed though I need to verify that this is actually working. I'm sure Vista loads the correct profile from power on.
The display is sharp and crisp with a beautifully matte finish. There is some banding in large gradients, as I feared, but I'm sure it's typical for all 6 bit displays.
Loading the profiling software was no fun as there appears to be something wrong with the installshield Vista installation from sony but eventually I got it working. Next step is a clean install on a new disk but I think I'm going back to XP for that.
