Dell :: Downgrade From Vista To XP On XPS 1530M
May 16, 2009
I have tried to install XP on a new hard drive in my XPS 1530, but it seems to not finish the install. I've changed the controller to ATA so that XP can see the HDD.
I've even tried to install Linux, but it will freeze during setup. Can someone help me please. This is a clean install, so I don't need any dual-boot instructions.

About to purchase a new E6400 and still deciding which operating system.
I noticed that I have a choice to downgrade to windows XP which I am extremely familiar and happy with. Im not familiar that much with Vista and I am concerned with all the complaints I hear.
I definitely expect to upgrade to Windows 7 when available in the winter.
Im just not sure which operating system i should go with now until then.
Did anyone else have this delemna?

I followed the instruction on this site, http://www.dell-m1330-info.com/dell_...indows_xp.html
to downgrade to xp. Everything seems fine. I downloaded the drivers and everything. but the thing is that it's EXTREMELY!!!! s...l.....o.....w. it's even slower than those old computers I dont know what the problem is. Is it something I did in the BIOS?
I delete all the partitions except the C drive when it asked me, so Im not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Seems MS has caved in,
Hate Vista? If your PC is running Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Windows Ultimate and you're fed up with the OS you may be able to ditch Vista for XP Pro. Microsoft is quietly allowing you to downgrade to Windows XP Pro.
Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo are just a few of the system manufacturers offering downgrades. Each of these PC makers offer an XP Pro recovery disc to those who request one that can be used to revert a Vista machine to XP Pro.
Dell, HP, and Lenovo customers can request a Windows XP Pro recovery disc to be included with their purchase of a Vista machine - should they want to revert in the future. Customers who already have purchased a Vista-PC can request an XP Pro recovery CD for between $15 to $20 by calling technical support.

My 1730 is "In Production" (whatever that means) and I specifically got one with Vista Ultimate so I could use downgrade rights to run XP for a while longer.
Anyone know how I go about exercising these downgrade rights?
I will need a CD Key to install XP Pro, how do I go about obtaining one? Is this a call to Microsoft? Dell? I don't need any media; I have several Microsoft XP OEM CD's from various systems I have built over the years and I have already downloaded all the XP drivers for the 1730 from Dell's site.

what Sony's policy (Sony USA) is on providing a 32-bit version of Vista with the laptops that now only include the 64-bit version (such as the Sony VAIO Z7xx series)?
From the information I have come across, apparently it is at your laptop manufacturer's discretion to provide you with a 32-bit OEM copy (which would also need a different product key than the one provided with the laptop for the 64-bit version, since it is OEM and not retail) or leave you to purchase your own copy. Does anyone have experience with Sony in this regard?
if the Windows 7 upgrade kit will also be 64-bit only?

trying to "Downgrade" my Laptop from Vista to XP, I have a legal copy of XP and when I boot from disk it wont install it just says that it cannot find a HD to install to. I downloaded a copy of XP to see if my disc was just broken or something and it let me format my HD and install XP, the only problem i have with that is i wont be able to perform updates and i only have a small screen in the middle of my display (i assume this is because some drivers are missing) also i cant connect to the internet because there are drivers missing. I have been on the sony website and downloaded some but they dont work, i think its because there designed for Vista.
So my question is this, does anyone know how I can get my LEGAL copy of XP to install and also does anyone know where I can get compatible drivers for it? My Laptop is VGN-NR38E/S.

to successfully downgrade from Vista to XP on this machine?
If so can you supply a posotive web link where to find the right drivers,so all devices in the device driver section are activated & don't have any exclamation marks present.
I know there is a thread on HP's website & its not very instructive,it seems a bit hit & miss.
If you get it right ,you get it right!
I managed a couple of tries, but always ended up without a network controller &
some device called unibrian pc 1394 missing!
Amongst other devices not working - no sound .

The only thing Im missing to downgrade vista to xp is the sata controller I cant find it anywhere for the Extensa 4630Z.
I found Slipstream drivers but it was for downgrading a acer aspire laptop and they didnt work.
I checked intel's site for sata controller drivers they arent there.
When tried slipstream drivers I found filename called " iaahci.inf " I used nlite to intergrate them on cd im still getting a blue screen so they arent compatible.
Why doesnt acer's support site have these sata drivers?

I own an Acer Aspire Timeline 3810tz. My laptop did not come with an optical drive and now I'm wondering how I might go about downgrading it from Vista to Windows XP? I have already purchased a USB Cd-Rom drive and skimmed through some nLite articles, but I'm still getting the blue screen 0x0000007B error. I'm guessing it has to do something with the SATA/AHCI driver but I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
*During my XP install I changed the SATA Mode from AHCI to IDE
*I think I might be using the wrong driver, but I'm not entirely sure.

My XPS had the 320GB 5400rpm Samsung drive (HM320JI) which seems to have died a few months into ownership. Dell to its credit very quickly shipped me a replacement that I just received. Two concerns I have, that I could use some advice on,
One, the static bag the drive was in had *REFURBISHED* on it. This was a little concerning and I was not sure what the warranty was. I contacted support via chat and got the following:
Agent (LIBx Mario 191505): "Okay, based on the records, you have an XPS M1530 with a warranty up to 2011-06-23,basically it was labeled refurbished because the harddrive was opened from the packaging and had to be tested before leaving the warehouse, this is done so that the reported problem would not occur on the replacement part.also the operating system was installed that's why once a part has been opened from its packaging we can no longer label it brandnew. As far as for the warranty, as long as you do have your warranty on, all parts that may have issues or would need replacement would be covered by the warranty as long as its within the warranty info..................

I recently bought a Inspiron 17R SE. Nice machine with 4 USB 3.0 ports. That sounds great but that is also my problem. I am used to work with VMWare on Windows 7 as host OS and XP as guest OS. That is fine as long as there are USB 2.0 ports available since VMWare can only handle USB 3.0 under Windows 7 if it is based on a NEC chipset. I would not have a problem if the machine had USB 2.0 ports.
Is there a way to downgrade to USB 2.0?

Firstly I apologize if this has been asked earlier, but I couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a 1530 on order. The OS will be Vista Premium x86. There are 2 things I need to do-
1. Upgrade the HD from a 5400 to a 7200, I have the HD.
2. Install Windows Vista Business - I have an original retail version, and I absolutely need this.
I have the Vista Business Retail DVD. What I want to do is have Windows and the dell partitions configured exactly as they came with the original computer, only with Vista Business, and on the new hard disk. I don't want to alter Media Direct, or delete the restoration partition. Everything should be the same except the Windows Versio

I'm getting headaches from my 1680 x 1050 display, it's a matte finish and has a very narrow viewing angle.
I run it at 1280 x 768 for best size and aspect, but it's then a bit fuzzy, too. Is it a reasonable change to go to a 1280 x 800 high-gloss display to get crisp text and wide viewing angle?

I made a previous fan about the issue I had with Dell's managment of the fan settings. In an attempt to combat this, I thought I'd try installing a previous BIOS to see if it fixes the problem (perhaps there was an alternative fan managment setup).
