Sony :: The Downgrade Xp With VAIO Vista Business
Apr 28, 2009
I've my VAIO SR290NTB, it came with vista business preinstalled only without the XP downgrade disk. I can order the CD from their web site. but i'm wondering if i ordered the disk does it mean i don't have the license to use vista again. or i will have both windows versions licensed.

I'm thinking about installing Windows Vista Business 64 bit (replacing the current 32 version of the same) on my SZ-483N.
Now my only concern is if in fact the drivers available for my notebook at the following website, will actually work on the 64 bit version of the windows. Any help or information in this regards will be duly appreciable.

I have an Upgrade dvd Vista business to Win 7 that I received for my z790. Finally got around to install Win 7 and seems like I will need to install Vista first to be able to use the upgrade DVD. Any workaround?
My secondary objective is to install new SSD.The way I see it now:
1. Ghost XP on SSD
2. Install Vista on SSD
3. Install Win 7 on SSD
Is there an easier way to do it? Any more pitfalls to avaoid? Thanks!
the only Win 7 key that I have is the upgrade Vista to Win 7. Am I correct that retail/all versions install Win 7 disk will not let me use this key?

The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. It's constantly writing. Half the time it's still totally silent, but every few minutes the hard drive will start spinning and writing like CRAZY. Like, I can't help but notice it and it disrupts my work. It's too noisy and the case is vibrating like I'm doing some heavy defrag process, even though I'm just reading online. My high-end new Vaio is noisier than my low-end 4 years old Toshiba. I mean, ?
I have read all the threads on the net and so far I've tried to disable:
Windows index
Windows defender
Windows search
Windows defrag
Superfetch
System Restore
Readyboost
Defragmenter
I have uninstalled google desktop.
All Vista updates are installed.
I've checked the disk health, it's fine. Also no virus. No torrents running.
Nothing has helped.
Disabling Index and Superfetch seems to do the trick for most people having this problem but not for me.
This could be a specific Vista Business issue - maybe it has an extra "feature"?

Have Vaio K23, P4 2.8GHz, .5 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 15.25" screen. Like it alot and it has served me well for many years. Time to upgrade due to speed and need for more memory. Will not give up screen size due to sight problems.
Have spec'd new FW 390 w/Core 2 Duo P8600 processor @ 2.4GHz, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD and 16.5" screen, direct from Sony at $939. Seems reasonable given the pricing I see on Ebay for comparable FW's, both new and refurbs.
Does anyone use their FW for business app's? I am told this is primarily a MultiMedia box. I will use it only for business purposes and could care less about Blue Ray, gaming, video, etc.. I only occasioanlly require mobility so size/weight do not matter but I do not want clutter of a desktop all over my desk top!

what Sony's policy (Sony USA) is on providing a 32-bit version of Vista with the laptops that now only include the 64-bit version (such as the Sony VAIO Z7xx series)?
From the information I have come across, apparently it is at your laptop manufacturer's discretion to provide you with a 32-bit OEM copy (which would also need a different product key than the one provided with the laptop for the 64-bit version, since it is OEM and not retail) or leave you to purchase your own copy. Does anyone have experience with Sony in this regard?
if the Windows 7 upgrade kit will also be 64-bit only?

trying to "Downgrade" my Laptop from Vista to XP, I have a legal copy of XP and when I boot from disk it wont install it just says that it cannot find a HD to install to. I downloaded a copy of XP to see if my disc was just broken or something and it let me format my HD and install XP, the only problem i have with that is i wont be able to perform updates and i only have a small screen in the middle of my display (i assume this is because some drivers are missing) also i cant connect to the internet because there are drivers missing. I have been on the sony website and downloaded some but they dont work, i think its because there designed for Vista.
So my question is this, does anyone know how I can get my LEGAL copy of XP to install and also does anyone know where I can get compatible drivers for it? My Laptop is VGN-NR38E/S.

Firstly I apologize if this has been asked earlier, but I couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a 1530 on order. The OS will be Vista Premium x86. There are 2 things I need to do-
1. Upgrade the HD from a 5400 to a 7200, I have the HD.
2. Install Windows Vista Business - I have an original retail version, and I absolutely need this.
I have the Vista Business Retail DVD. What I want to do is have Windows and the dell partitions configured exactly as they came with the original computer, only with Vista Business, and on the new hard disk. I don't want to alter Media Direct, or delete the restoration partition. Everything should be the same except the Windows Versio

One of the most troublesome consequences of downgrading your VAIO to Windows XP is not being able to adjust the screen brightness using the F5/F6 keys.
This tutorial aims to (i) resolve that issue, and (ii) retain the ability to adjust brightness when you update to the latest LaptopVideo2Go drivers. The below methods have been tested on VAIO FZ, FW, and NS laptops with NVIDIA GeForce 8X00M cards, and they are working flawlessly with the LV2G 190.15 driver.
Part 1: Enabling Fn Brightness Control
Skip this step if your brightness control is already working
In order to be able to use the brightness control on a XP-Downgraded machine, you need:
1. VAIO Event Service Hotfix (Which updates the VESConfig.ini file for the VAIO Event Service)
-> You can get this at[url].
-> If you have an FZ, you can use the VESConfig.ini I have attached
2. NVIDIA Driver with Customised nv4_disp.inf (Refer to Part 2)............

I asked Dell Tech Support to send me the install media for Vista Business 64-bit for my E6500. They said that since my System Type is "X86-based PC," I won't be able to run 64-bit. Is there no workaround? Is that really true? My refurb laptop came with XP Pro installed as a downgrade from Vista Business 32-bit. It has a T9600 processor. Does anyone have experience installing Vista Business 64-bit on a laptop like mine?

I just got my e6400 and the first thing I see when I boot is this stoopid BSOD, "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"
I have vista ultimate. I went into the bios and everything seems ok. I fear a memory problem. I am running the diagnostic tests but I don't have much hope on them.

I have an ACER Aspire 5670. Recently i installed windows vista business.
From the day i installed vista my battery appears to be broken.
Ok let's say battery cells were destroyed (Fedora installed on the same system report that battery may be dammaged)-So it may be destroyed in a couple of hours.
The second weird thing is that it persists not to recognize one device. In the device manager it has a hardware ID: ACPISMCB000
Third weird story. Today my notebook prompted that there was SP1 update available. I installed it (in 3 phases - 2together at shutdown and 1 after restart)
After SP update my keyboard stopped working - same thing with touchpad. I uninstalled SP1, uninstalled synaptics driver and re-installed it - same thing.
In a forum somewhere i read that battery causes these problems. I took battery off and now i am writing this message from my notebook's keybord ... touchpad still dead...
both keyboard and touchpad work perfectly in Fedora 9 and that usb mouse/keyboard work perfect too in Vista.

I returned from a 2 week holiday to find that I could not logon to my laptop. During the time I was away the laptop was powered down. When I enter the correct password to logon I get: "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." message. I tried powering the laptop for 3 hours then tried to logon again but without success. How do I get around this?

I was attempting to buy a Dell Vostro 1510 yesterday, but Dell sent me an email saying they have declined my debit card due to incorrect details. Apparently this is something they've done to quite a few people.
It may be due to my having to supply a company name because I was buying through Dell business, and them expecting the company name I gave to be part of my official debit card address, which it is obviously not. I don't have an officially registered business.
In any case they are not being very helpful about it. I updated my details on my account on the website and removed my 'company' name and have asked them to try and redo the payment, but so far getting no response. I'm considering phoning them but I doubt that they will understand what I'm talking about and of course I will have to deal with the tricky aspect of my not really being a business, but ordering through dell business.
I'm concerned that they will ask me to repeat my order now that the special offer on the laptop is expired.

About to purchase a new E6400 and still deciding which operating system.
I noticed that I have a choice to downgrade to windows XP which I am extremely familiar and happy with. Im not familiar that much with Vista and I am concerned with all the complaints I hear.
I definitely expect to upgrade to Windows 7 when available in the winter.
Im just not sure which operating system i should go with now until then.
Did anyone else have this delemna?

I have tried to install XP on a new hard drive in my XPS 1530, but it seems to not finish the install. I've changed the controller to ATA so that XP can see the HDD.
I've even tried to install Linux, but it will freeze during setup. Can someone help me please. This is a clean install, so I don't need any dual-boot instructions.

I followed the instruction on this site, http://www.dell-m1330-info.com/dell_...indows_xp.html
to downgrade to xp. Everything seems fine. I downloaded the drivers and everything. but the thing is that it's EXTREMELY!!!! s...l.....o.....w. it's even slower than those old computers I dont know what the problem is. Is it something I did in the BIOS?
I delete all the partitions except the C drive when it asked me, so Im not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Seems MS has caved in,
Hate Vista? If your PC is running Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Windows Ultimate and you're fed up with the OS you may be able to ditch Vista for XP Pro. Microsoft is quietly allowing you to downgrade to Windows XP Pro.
Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo are just a few of the system manufacturers offering downgrades. Each of these PC makers offer an XP Pro recovery disc to those who request one that can be used to revert a Vista machine to XP Pro.
Dell, HP, and Lenovo customers can request a Windows XP Pro recovery disc to be included with their purchase of a Vista machine - should they want to revert in the future. Customers who already have purchased a Vista-PC can request an XP Pro recovery CD for between $15 to $20 by calling technical support.
