Seeing as the prices have come within about $300 of eachother for these machines, I was wondering if there is a major advantage going with Alienware over Dell on the laptops with the i7 CPUs?

View 10 Replies View RelatedThis is interesting... a friend of mine just tried to order the SXPS with the i7-820 processor and got denied by Dell. Apparently, the 1645 has been fully discontinued, and Dell will no longer be placing the i7-820 processor in any SXPS form factor. They quoted that due to hardware and power issues as the reason behind discontinuing the 1645 (and replacing it with the 1647) and killing i7-820 support. The sales rep said the only offering will be the Studio series for the i7-820.
As a 1645 owner with the i7-820, this is kinda scary that this laptop has been discontinued this quickly as well as the offering of the 820 series chip. We ended up calling a second time, and another sales rep confirmed the same story.
Anyone get similar information from Dell on this? I'm also wondering if this is a "Dell Canada" thing...
I just want to know if Dell fixed the problem with their new screens, i am having some dust particles in the lower left hand corner..
i called Dell and after arguing with the rep, he said they will send me a box and i have to ship the Laptop to them for a screen replacement. The rep was saying that this was due because i dropped the laptop and cracked the screen, this is ridiculous because the laptop has been sitting on my desk and never been dropped.
Anyway, i just want to know if they fixed the new screens, because if they don't i can wait because the replacement screen will have to be replaced again in few months..........
Hi at the moment i have a dell sxps 1645 and i wold like to know about the bios because im on the A01 bios at the moment and im not experiencing any crashes or anything else apart from the throttling ;( is it worth upgrading to the A03 or A05?

This is a problem with the P55 chipset and connecting the iPhone in Win7 64-bit versions. Did anyone get this to work on their SXPS 1645 as of yet? Or are we all waiting for a BIOS update from Dell for this? I've tried tons of different things, and for the life of me can't get it to work.
I'd like to get my iPhone working.
Is having an i7-920XM (55 W TDP) in an SXPS 1645 a good idea? I understand that the TDP of the 720QM and 820QM are both 45 W, but do you people think the extra 10 W required to cool it will pose some risk to the other components?
View 10 Replies View RelatedHow do I tell if mine is 130 W or 90 W? I have 2 adapters: the 1st came with my older 1640 and says 90 W on the front, while the newer one that came with my 1645 does not say anything related to W. The part # is WK890 and everything else is about Amps, Voltages, Made in China, etc.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI ordered my Studio XPS 1645 on May 17, and it is dated to June 3rd for arrival.
Does Dell usually take that long or it's over-estimation on their part?
Has anyone else received it during their system during this time?
BTW I live in Toronto, Canada and, as of today, May 25, the status says "In Production"
I'm wondering about certain aspects of the notebook. I know, this laptop wasn't designed for gaming. It's more of a multimedia notebook, which is why bought it.
Though, I'm also trying to get some games for PC. Youtube videos show this laptop runs very good latest games, like Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, Call of Duty: WaW-MW-MW2, Far Cry 2, Unreal Tournament III, etc.

So ever since the technician came out and upgraded my processor from the i7 720 to the 820, the fan has been coming on louder and more frequently than when i first got the laptop. Any ideas as to why? Is this something that can be easily fixed?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was on chat with dell a few months back and I was telling them to replace my motherboard and processor and I was complaining about heat.
Anyway during the whole convo I was joking (not really) about giving me a 4670 motherboard instead of the 3670. Well I have had the parts for a month now and was just going to return them because
I didn't feel it would change anything replacing the same parts, knowing that the xps just gets warm on it's own. (and yes I undervolted, helped a lot and added more thermal paste)
Any to make a long story short the dell tech sent me a motherboard now with a 4670 ati chip on it. The processor was the same but man am I stoked.
Anyway is my computer a 1640 still or a 1645. Should I update any other drivers besides the video card. My service tag is irrelevant now also when downloading drivers.
I've decided to get an xps 16 for college, and I am curious as to which to get. I plan on using it for college, but also plan on playing quite a few games on it as well when I have the time. Which would be better overall to avoid throttling issues, and just have the best performance for this overall?
On a side note, on the dell site, how do I tell which is a 1640, 1645, and 1647?
It's been over a month since I purchased my unit from Dell Malaysia and just yesterday I faced this very unusual problem with my keyboard. Keys 6 7 y u h j n m were not functioning. Did any of you experienced the same problem?
I am currently here in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and in case any of you knows how I can manage to avail Dell's warranty service from he I would love to hear from you.
So I when I first got this laptop a few weeks ago I instantly installed lucid lynx.
So I am dual booting between W7 and lucid. The odd thing I see is that the grub menu seems to take a random amount of time to come up.
Sometimes it takes a few second to get to the OS list - other times it takes more than 10 seconds. Also - sometimes the OS list will come up - but the keyboard will to be recognized for another few seconds (like 5 or more seconds)...
My SXPS 1645 came with Windows 7 Home Premium, but I wiped the drive and installed Windows 7 Ultimate off of MSDN. What I'd like to do is use the Home Premium installation for my parents' admittedly ancient Dell Dimension 2400.
That system needs to be rescued from the gates of hell anyway, so rather than reinstall Windows XP, I figured it'd be worth seeing how well 7 will run ...
Is the sound quality better on the Dell Studio XPS 1645 than the Alienware 15x?
I am researching the Alienware 15x, with the possibility of returning the 1645 and getting the Alienware.
It seems there are clear tradeoffs. I am not really into gaming, but would prefer a laptop that has complete use of the i7 performance.
It appears that the Alienware does not have the same performance restrictions as the Alienware; however, it looks like many Alienware owners are dissatisfied with the internal laptop sound and the track pad.
I am not looking to hook external keyboards, or an external mouse, or an external speaker system up to the laptop.
I have just ordered 720QM SXPS 1645 and waiting for it to get out of the 'In Production' time...
So, I was just curious about its performance...
Can anyone who has a Studio XPS 1645 (preferably i7) post their start-up / shutdown time?
Get it at http://files.fredfx.com/Dell%20Studio%20XPS%201645/
Anyone know where I can get this? It's not on the Dell support site, and for some reason I can't continue past Dell SmartSource after a certain step.
Has anyone tried this or even thought to try this? I want to know if besides differing capacities if there are different speeds/classes of the device that are faster than others. Is NAND flash super fast, or just USB drive fast? There's that extra internal WWAN slot that I wouldn't mind filling up with this stuff once I find out the details.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am beyond my 30 days so i guess a return is out of the question? I am really not happy with it.
I didn't notice it too much because i got used to leaving it on my lap on top of a laptop bag ... so i don't feel any heat.
But it is soooo hot that i literally cannot even hand it to my wife, it would burn her.
The hot zones are all along the back, all along the left side, and the bottom on the left side.
I am dreading calling dell customer support, i know it is horrible for personal products
Just wondering if someone could lend some insight on why the SSD are significantly overpriced in AUS To Customize a SXPS 1640 from a 500gb 5400 rpm in the US is is $100 dollars, or $152 Aus.
While in Australia it is $800 to upgrade.. Who do you have to sleep with to get a decent price ?
The bottom line is that this laptops are not worthy to buy!
1. Throttling Issue (No real fix so far)
2. Random freezing (Speculations about driver fix)
3. Brightness control stops working randomly (remove batery to fix)
4. Sub-buffer rattles (nobody knows why)
5. Stereo leaks between left and right (no fix)
6. System runs extremely hot (1645 a little bit less than 1640)
All-in-all nice looking and feature complete laptop with a lot of issues.
try and source a mobo and cpu if they can be found at a reasonable price i fancy some core i7 action and the wait for the precision is taking its toll!

Long story short, i got a replacement refurbished SXPS 1645 system for a E1505 (problems with the E1505 started 12/09/09, after replacing tons of parts problems persisted as of 03/15/10 they approved a dispatch for replacement system), shipped 03/26/10, received 03/29/10(?) 111 days later I had a working computer again, needless to say i am very happy with the replacement! (Maybe i spoke too soon now 05/05)
(attached are a few comparison shots to a Gateway LT-2005u 10" netbook...my cheap temporary computer I bought in Dec. to use until Dell got everything fixed)
After starting to read the forums here I am concerned about the longevity of the computer, don't get me wrong, i love the computer...its an awesome replacement But i've already started to notice some issues/problems with the refurb I got...Ok the title is answered, i bought Dell's expensive warranty extension 2 years/$500....
Hi can anyone suggest the max safe overcolck settings for this graphics card.
