I'm wondering about certain aspects of the notebook. I know, this laptop wasn't designed for gaming. It's more of a multimedia notebook, which is why bought it.
Though, I'm also trying to get some games for PC. Youtube videos show this laptop runs very good latest games, like Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, Call of Duty: WaW-MW-MW2, Far Cry 2, Unreal Tournament III, etc.
I have a Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop, 1.73 GHz Intel Core i7 CPU, 4G RAM, Windows 7 64-bit O/S, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 video card.
Among other things, I'm using this computer for gaming. I play Lord of the Rings Online and World of Warcraft. They both run very erratically on this computer in terms of frames per second. They may run at 60 fps for half an hour, then throttle back to 1-2 fps for half an hour, and it's nearly impossible to play these games at 1-2 fps.Â
I recently downloaded the new BIOS patch and acquired the 130W power supply, which were supposed to be related to similar performance issues, but they did not seem to make any difference. There is no question that the computer gets quite hot when running these games, but even when hot it will suddenly work properly for half an hour before going painfully slow again. I close all other applications when running these games, and I do have McAfee firewall running in the background.
What gets me is how this problem seems to "throttle" - sometimes it works perfectly and other times it's painful. This tells me that the system has the specs and horsepower to play these games - something else must be happening.
This is interesting... a friend of mine just tried to order the SXPS with the i7-820 processor and got denied by Dell. Apparently, the 1645 has been fully discontinued, and Dell will no longer be placing the i7-820 processor in any SXPS form factor. They quoted that due to hardware and power issues as the reason behind discontinuing the 1645 (and replacing it with the 1647) and killing i7-820 support. The sales rep said the only offering will be the Studio series for the i7-820.
As a 1645 owner with the i7-820, this is kinda scary that this laptop has been discontinued this quickly as well as the offering of the 820 series chip. We ended up calling a second time, and another sales rep confirmed the same story.
Anyone get similar information from Dell on this? I'm also wondering if this is a "Dell Canada" thing...
I have the m1530 and recently got team fortress 2. Have updated BIOS A012, somewhat updated graphics driver 185.85, can't seem to download the 186.06, links are down for Windows XP Pro 32 Bit version. I am running the game at 800*600 and it still lags.

My question is how else can I reduce this heat because I know as it gets hotter it throttles back to avoid crashing, thus decreasing performance.

Using software program, Open Hardware Monitor (and having my cooling pad on max blast), I have retrieved the following data:~ My CPU idles around 60 degrees Celsius and can max around 70 degrees Celsius~ My GPU idles around 44 degrees Celsius and can max around 77 degrees CelsiusMy room temperature varies from 10-20 degrees Celsius (50-65 degrees Fahrenheit)I had this laptop since July of 2012 and I had just had my motherboard swapped (GPU was integrated), heat sink re-seated, and cleaned of dust (wasn't really any in there). It was under warranty (and still is).

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a M1730 with 8700gt sli GPU's. My problem is that, if i turn on the notebook and start playing a newish game,
it will run great for 20 mins or so, then its performance will drop dramatically, to the point of not being able to play due to framerate drop.
My instincts tell me that it is a heat problem, beacuse if i turn it off and leave it for a bit, i can turn it back on and play fine again.
I'm on a dell inspiron N5110 laptop, 6gb installed ram, Intel core i5-2430m processor, intel HD graphics 3000. When I play games like Planetside 2 I have to turn it on low and the render quality to the lowest setting, and turn shadows off and I still get bad fps 20-40. What i'm wondering is there anyway through settings I can boost the gaming performance to the point where it runs fine on low to medium. Or is there an external/internal graphics card for under 100 bucks I can buy to boost the performance. I also have all my Intel and I believe dell drivers up to date.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Dell 7720 17r SE for almost a year now,I remember it as a fine gaming rig.I used to play Dead Island, Fallout New Vegas on max settings and resolutions,But ever since the latest A13 BIOS upgrade and the new 314.22 Nvidia Driver.
I noticed a significant drop in performance. Almost every game started to lag when the action becomes too "crowded" (lots of enemies etc).
And as for Dead island I noticed the performance drop after 20min of play.Not sure about overheating. (It seems like the usual temp if not maybe a Celsius hotter)Â

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am pretty much deciding between keeping my macbook pro (in sig) and upgrading to an imac 24" with the ati 4850. With student discount it would cost me 1879 + tax. I just dont know if its worth it for me. Most all the pc games i own can be maxed on the pro,Save for world in conflict, crysis, and some others (about 5). My 360 gets most of my gaming time anyway. I just am thinking that it would be great to have the extra power in the 4850 for some of my current titles and having power for future titles would be nice. Also who couldnt use more speed for final cut express and such.
One game that annoys me on my macbook pro is Unreal 3. It is an amazingly graphical game. The new patch enables comprehesive settings adjustment. The thing that bothers me is that I can max it but fps drops by 65% on the water level. I want a card that wont have problems like this. Im not expecting wonders with the 4850, i would still use the modpacks for crysis, and run WiC in DX9.
However am i just missusing the macbook pro? What windows operating system runs smoothest on it? I have tried xp 32 bit and noticed some glitches with the led keyboard and such. Would 64 bit be the better option? Would upgrading the ram help at all? Im pretty convinced it wouldnt because as for vram i got double the ram compared to most people with the macbook pro, and still notice about the exact same performace. Also drivers? I never even touched or looked at the drivers? How do install drivers on a mac? Do i just go to nvidia's site on windows? If i erase the bootcamp partiiton will it delete the drivers? Will it conflict with leopard?
I've been hearing good things about CrossOver from a few people and wondered if anyone here could recommend it. Normally I just game under boot camp, but apparently this program allows you to game at full speed under OS X. Any truth to this? What kind of performance would I be looking at with a 9600M GT?

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110. After two years, my laptop starts to have reduced performance in gaming and watching streaming videos. I did a factory reset. Everything seems fine.Â
I did a test by installing Warcraft 3 which I played with no lag at all. After that, I started to install/ update the Graphic drivers, Windows updates and installed Starcraft 2.
Then I played Warcraft 3 to test the performance and it lags like for every 2 seconds in game.Â
Please note that I test my system by playing WC3 after installing the following individual items:
Item 1: Graphics driver
Item 2: Windows updates
Item 3: Starcraft 2Â
Please note that I did three (3) factory resets.
This means I install WC3 and played and there is no lags. When i do Item 1, WC3 lags.Â

 Please note that I did a hardware diagnostic test and I pass all the tests.Â

Hi at the moment i have a dell sxps 1645 and i wold like to know about the bios because im on the A01 bios at the moment and im not experiencing any crashes or anything else apart from the throttling ;( is it worth upgrading to the A03 or A05?

This is a problem with the P55 chipset and connecting the iPhone in Win7 64-bit versions. Did anyone get this to work on their SXPS 1645 as of yet? Or are we all waiting for a BIOS update from Dell for this? I've tried tons of different things, and for the life of me can't get it to work.
I'd like to get my iPhone working.
Is having an i7-920XM (55 W TDP) in an SXPS 1645 a good idea? I understand that the TDP of the 720QM and 820QM are both 45 W, but do you people think the extra 10 W required to cool it will pose some risk to the other components?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a Studio XPS 1640 (3670 512mb, P8600, etc.) that I mostly use for gaming. During the past few months, I've noticed that occasionally when I'm playing a game, the FPS will suddenly go wayyy down. For example, I was once playing Oblivion and getting around 40 FPS, when all of a sudden the FPS randomly dropped to less than 10. The same thing has happened in other games such as TF2. I think that this may be due to overheating, because the computer still seems sort of sluggish even after I close the game. Anyone know what I should do? Maybe adjust the fan speed/get a cooling pad?

I have 2 adapters: the 1st came with my older 1640 and says 90 W on the front, while the newer one that came with my 1645 does not say anything related to W. So ever since the technician came out and upgraded my processor from the i7 720 to the 820, the fan has been coming on louder and more frequently than when i first got the laptop. Any ideas as to why? Is this something that can be easily fixed?

So I am dual booting between W7 and lucid. The odd thing I see is that the grub menu seems to take a random amount of time to come up.
Sometimes it takes a few second to get to the OS list - other times it takes more than 10 seconds. Also - sometimes the OS list will come up - but the keyboard will to be recognized for another few seconds (like 5 or more seconds)...
My SXPS 1645 came with Windows 7 Home Premium, but I wiped the drive and installed Windows 7 Ultimate off of MSDN. What I'd like to do is use the Home Premium installation for my parents' admittedly ancient Dell Dimension 2400.
That system needs to be rescued from the gates of hell anyway, so rather than reinstall Windows XP, I figured it'd be worth seeing how well 7 will run ...
Is the sound quality better on the Dell Studio XPS 1645 than the Alienware 15x?
I am researching the Alienware 15x, with the possibility of returning the 1645 and getting the Alienware.
It seems there are clear tradeoffs. I am not really into gaming, but would prefer a laptop that has complete use of the i7 performance.
It appears that the Alienware does not have the same performance restrictions as the Alienware; however, it looks like many Alienware owners are dissatisfied with the internal laptop sound and the track pad.
I am not looking to hook external keyboards, or an external mouse, or an external speaker system up to the laptop.
I have just ordered 720QM SXPS 1645 and waiting for it to get out of the 'In Production' time...
So, I was just curious about its performance...
Can anyone who has a Studio XPS 1645 (preferably i7) post their start-up / shutdown time?
