Dell Studio XPS 1645 :: Low Performance When Gaming

Nov 18, 2010

I have a Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop, 1.73 GHz Intel Core i7 CPU, 4G RAM, Windows 7 64-bit O/S, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 video card.

Among other things, I'm using this computer for gaming. I play Lord of the Rings Online and World of Warcraft. They both run very erratically on this computer in terms of frames per second. They may run at 60 fps for half an hour, then throttle back to 1-2 fps for half an hour, and it's nearly impossible to play these games at 1-2 fps.

I recently downloaded the new BIOS patch and acquired the 130W power supply, which were supposed to be related to similar performance issues, but they did not seem to make any difference. There is no question that the computer gets quite hot when running these games, but even when hot it will suddenly work properly for half an hour before going painfully slow again. I close all other applications when running these games, and I do have McAfee firewall running in the background.

What gets me is how this problem seems to "throttle" - sometimes it works perfectly and other times it's painful. This tells me that the system has the specs and horsepower to play these games - something else must be happening.

Dell :: Performance Regarding Gaming On The SXPS 1645

Nov 16, 2009

I'm wondering about certain aspects of the notebook. I know, this laptop wasn't designed for gaming. It's more of a multimedia notebook, which is why bought it.

Though, I'm also trying to get some games for PC. Youtube videos show this laptop runs very good latest games, like Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, Call of Duty: WaW-MW-MW2, Far Cry 2, Unreal Tournament III, etc.

Dell XPS 15 L521x :: GPU Too Hot When Gaming - Decreased Performance

Apr 28, 2013

I have a Dell XPS 15 (L521x) laptop. While gaming my GPU heats up to temperatures ranging from 73 to 77 degrees Celsius (NOTE: This is with a CM Storm SF-19 cooling pad).

My question is how else can I reduce this heat because I know as it gets hotter it throttles back to avoid crashing, thus decreasing performance.

Here are specs of everything:Model - Dell XPS 15 (L521x)OS- Windows 7 64-bitCPU - Intel Core i7-3632QMBIOS - A13 (Up to date)SSD - 128GB (OS is on this, 30GB free)HDD - 1TB (300GB free)RAM - 16GBGPU - Nvidia GT 640MDrivers for EVERYTHING (including my graphics card) are up to date.CM Storm SF-19 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad with two 140mm Turbine Fans (1200-2600 RPM's, I always keep it at max blast)

Using software program, Open Hardware Monitor (and having my cooling pad on max blast), I have retrieved the following data:~ My CPU idles around 60 degrees Celsius and can max around 70 degrees Celsius~ My GPU idles around 44 degrees Celsius and can max around 77 degrees CelsiusMy room temperature varies from 10-20 degrees Celsius (50-65 degrees Fahrenheit)I had this laptop since July of 2012 and I had just had my motherboard swapped (GPU was integrated), heat sink re-seated, and cleaned of dust (wasn't really any in there). It was under warranty (and still is).

Dell :: XPS M1730 Performance Drops After 20 Mins Of Gaming

Mar 30, 2009

I have a M1730 with 8700gt sli GPU's. My problem is that, if i turn on the notebook and start playing a newish game,

it will run great for 20 mins or so, then its performance will drop dramatically, to the point of not being able to play due to framerate drop.

My instincts tell me that it is a heat problem, beacuse if i turn it off and leave it for a bit, i can turn it back on and play fine again.

Dell Inspiron N5110 :: How To Improve Gaming Performance

Jan 29, 2013

I'm on a dell inspiron N5110 laptop, 6gb installed ram, Intel core i5-2430m processor, intel HD graphics 3000. When I play games like Planetside 2 I have to turn it on low and the render quality to the lowest setting, and turn shadows off and I still get bad fps 20-40. What i'm wondering is there anyway through settings I can boost the gaming performance to the point where it runs fine on low to medium. Or is there an external/internal graphics card for under 100 bucks I can buy to boost the performance. I also have all my Intel and I believe dell drivers up to date.

Dell Inspiron 17r SE 7720 :: Gaming Performance Drop?

Apr 14, 2013

I have Dell 7720 17r SE for almost a year now,I remember it as a fine gaming rig.I used to play Dead Island, Fallout New Vegas on max settings and resolutions,But ever since the latest A13 BIOS upgrade and the new 314.22 Nvidia Driver.

I noticed a significant drop in performance. Almost every game started to lag when the action becomes too "crowded" (lots of enemies etc).

And as for Dead island I noticed the performance drop after 20min of play. Not sure about overheating. (It seems like the usual temp if not maybe a Celsius hotter)

Noticed gaming performance drop after updating the bios and latest GPU driver???

Apple :: Getting The Most Gaming Performance Out Of My Macbook Pro

Apr 2, 2009

I am pretty much deciding between keeping my macbook pro (in sig) and upgrading to an imac 24" with the ati 4850. With student discount it would cost me 1879 + tax. I just dont know if its worth it for me. Most all the pc games i own can be maxed on the pro,Save for world in conflict, crysis, and some others (about 5). My 360 gets most of my gaming time anyway. I just am thinking that it would be great to have the extra power in the 4850 for some of my current titles and having power for future titles would be nice. Also who couldnt use more speed for final cut express and such.

One game that annoys me on my macbook pro is Unreal 3. It is an amazingly graphical game. The new patch enables comprehesive settings adjustment. The thing that bothers me is that I can max it but fps drops by 65% on the water level. I want a card that wont have problems like this. Im not expecting wonders with the 4850, i would still use the modpacks for crysis, and run WiC in DX9.

However am i just missusing the macbook pro? What windows operating system runs smoothest on it? I have tried xp 32 bit and noticed some glitches with the led keyboard and such. Would 64 bit be the better option? Would upgrading the ram help at all? Im pretty convinced it wouldnt because as for vram i got double the ram compared to most people with the macbook pro, and still notice about the exact same performace. Also drivers? I never even touched or looked at the drivers? How do install drivers on a mac? Do i just go to nvidia's site on windows? If i erase the bootcamp partiiton will it delete the drivers? Will it conflict with leopard?

Dell Inspiron N5110 :: Reduced Performance In Gaming And Watching Streaming Videos

Jul 1, 2014

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110.  After two years, my laptop starts to have reduced performance in gaming and watching streaming videos. I did a factory reset. Everything seems fine.

I did a test by installing Warcraft 3 which I played with no lag at all. After that, I started to install/ update the Graphic drivers, Windows updates and installed Starcraft 2.

Then I played Warcraft 3 to test the performance and it lags like for every 2 seconds in game.

Please note that I test my system by playing WC3 after installing the following individual items:

Item 1: Graphics driver
Item 2: Windows updates
Item 3: Starcraft 2

Please note that I did three (3) factory resets.

This means I install WC3 and played and there is no lags. When i do Item 1, WC3 lags.

This means I install WC3 and played and there is no lags. When i do Item 2, WC3 lags.

This means I install WC3 and played and there is no lags. When i do Item 3, WC3 lags.

Please note that I did a hardware diagnostic test and I pass all the tests.

I also did played around with:

1) Power Settings
2) Nvidia Control Settings and used the my graphic card instead of integrated video card.

But I am still facing the lag.

At the moment, I am using my laptop at the factory settings and not installing any drivers or updates.

Dell :: Studio XPS 1645 / Studio 1747 Wireless Configs

Dec 3, 2009

Does anyone have any idea why? Is this something affecting Dell globally or is it just UK/Europe in a mess?

I guess I could survive with just wireless G, but it seems ridiculous to be limited to that these days;

I guess I could also just order it and pick up an intel/dell Wireless N card for ~£25 and install it myself,

but again the question arises, why is it necessary? I assume some of you do have an 802.11n card of some description in your 1645/1747's have you seen any problems with it? .....

Dell :: Studio XPS 1645 Or Studio 1747 ???

Nov 6, 2009

I'm university student and ntb is meant to be carried almost daily (16" is ok for me), it's mainly for multimedia oriented jobs, some programming in C and Mathematica, some photoshop or even premiere (occasionaly), A LOT of movie watching. I also want it to be futureproof and well-built.

Dell XPS 1645 meets most of my criteria, but there are few things I'm unsure about...
1) after reading a couple of reviews and many posts on this forum I'm really doubtful if RGB-LED is worth the extra money. I'm not doing colour sensitive job (however I do sometimes edit RAW images in PS), but i want things on the display to look natural, especially in FullHD movies... (and I'm occasional gamer too)

Those who had honor to work with RGB-LED: would you pay for it in my position???

And just to make sure I haven't overlooked something: biggest DISadvantages of RGB-LED are supposed to be: inaccurate colors, bigger power consumption and some heat produced;
while advantages should be: 0,4" gain in size, wider gamut and (maybe) better brightness...

Do you know any more to be added?

2) I'm also considering usual Studio 17 with Core i7 720QM (almost the same config), because it should be cooler, it has numpad and place for additional hdd (I'd buy 80GB intel ssd 34nm for system while keeping stock 500GB for data, I think it's beatiful idea), but what I DISlike about studio 17 is: dimensions, weight, speakers and design (and maybe a bit worse overal built quality).

So which one do you think is better for me?

3) how does combined e-sata/usb work? Since I have a external e-sata drive I have to plug 2 cables at the moment: USB for power and e-sata... With this 2-in-1 port do I need only 1 special cable? Or is it meant to be either/or thing??? From the placement of combined e-sata/usb on the opposite side of ntb than other USBs I'd say that 1 cable should be enough,

Dell :: Studio XPS 1645 Vs Studio XPS 1647

Feb 23, 2010

I am looking to get a Studio XPS 16 soon, but can't quite decide on which model to get and had a few questions...

1) What is the battery life of the 1647 (i5) compared to the 1645 (i7) assuming they have the same specs. I've read that i5's should last longer, but I really couldn't find anything comparing the two for these systems.

2) When configuring the 1645 and 1647 side-by-side with the same specs. The 1647 is about the same price as the 1645, if not more (depending on which processor selected). I thought the i5's were supposed to be less expensive than the i7's. Since they are about the same price, would it be better to go with the i7? Any reason to choose the i5 over i7?

Performance is important but I also want to select components or a configuration that has fewest known problems (bug, incompability or being unreliable).

Dell :: Studio XPS 1647 Recommended For Gaming?

Apr 27, 2010

From what I've heard it seems like the Dell Studio XPS 1647 has good enough specs to play a good number of games. But I want to ask the community who owns a Studio XPS 1647 to give me their opinion on it when gaming on it. Note that I'm well aware that the Dell Studio XPS 1647 isn't made for just gaming. Anyways I'm planning on buying one but I'm not too convince to do so.

I plan on playing games on the Studio XPS 1647 most of the time, but I'm also willing to do other things such as surfing on the internet, homework, etc.. From looking at the specs I believe that it would be a good computer to buy, but having to look at the graphic card (ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB) I'm not too sure that I'll be able to play the games I want to play with the graphic details I want to play in. When I say games I mean like Bad Company 2, Starcraft 2 etc..

Dell :: Studio 1735's ATi 3650 Performance

Sep 18, 2008

I got myself a shiny 1735. I'm not a big gamer, but I wanted something that could play the odd game and specifically World of Warcraft. With this in mind (and the fact that I've never yet met an integrated graphics solution that didn't suck so hard that Dyson wanted to patent it), I went with the ATi Radeon Mobility HD 3650 gfx upgrade. I've never been a fan of ATi so it wouldn't have been my first choice of card, but given that it's about the same choice as the vegetarian "option" in restaurants (ie, take it, or go hungry) I figured it was worth a punt.

Got WoW installed and played about with settings. To cut a long story short, it looks absolutely gorgeous and will happily fling the game about with all the settings ramped up to max at 1920x1200. But.

WoW seems to run... I'm struggling for the exact word, but it's "choppy". When you're running / flying, the terrain isn't smooth, it kinda jerks past in quick bursts. It doesn't feel like the card is struggling per sé, it's like the sort of thing that you'd expect to be fixed in a driver update.

I grabbed the latest Catalyst drivers from ATi (8.8). They appear to install fine, along with the control centre which is missing from the stock Dell install, but it doesn't actually appear to update the drivers from 8.4. Presumably this is down to it being a laptop adapter rather than a discrete ATi card, but I've not as yet come up with a workaround to make it install though I'm sure it's possible. Anyway.

I took a closer look at the graphics card. The stock 3650 from ATi runs at 600MHz core, 500MHz RAM. yet the adapter supplied by Dell appears to be underclocked, the memory is the same speed but the core is running at just 450MHz.

Experimenting with ATiTool, I can reclock the card to run at ATi stock speeds of 600/500. At this speed it runs rock solid stable under extended load, with no discernable thermal issues that I can immediately make out. Overclocking it much past this almost immediately crashes the laptop so I can't recommend taking it much out of spec, for the sake of a couple of MHz it's just not worth the risk / hassle, but at 600 core it's solid. I can only assume that Dell have underclocked it to improve battery life, I can't see any other reason for such a large crippling.

Clocking the card 'properly' and switching off Full Screen Glow in WoW has gone a long way towards rectifying the choppiness, but I can see that it's still not "right". I've not yet played with other resolutions or tried any other games so I don't know if I'm just asking too much in terms of graphics RAM or if it's specifically a WoW issue but I'm going to carry on fiddling with it. Short of persevering with hacking the Catalyst 8.8 drivers though, I'm not entirely sure where else I can go with this. In the grand scheme of things it's not a huge issue, it's just irritating that my shiny new toy isn't quite the beast I was expecting when I bought it.
