Dell :: Inspiron 1720: Want To Upgrade Video Card (intel 965)
Jan 7, 2010i would like to upgrade my video card, if it is possible and if it is worth it. my 1720 has the mobile intel 965 express chipset family. ive seen sigs (dr650se and someformofhuman) stating that they have the nvidia 8600m gt and was wondering if this is compatible with my 1720.
also i found out through this forum that i can upgrade my cpu (which is the measly t5450 1.66 ghz) to the beastly t9300, and add a 2nd hard drive (which is my first step in upgrading this dell because i only have a 160 gb drive).
i was looking for a new laptop until i came across this forum and found out the possibilities of my dell. i decided to stick with this and just upgrade it! thanks for the insight, and thanks in advance for all the help that i will be asking for!

Apr 7, 2009I have games such as COD4, Crysis, and Assassins Creed. What are the best drivers I can get for this laptop in order to play these games with good quality? I've done some reading and saw that it's possible to overclock the GPU.
Is this safe? Is it really worth it? I'd like to try and increase the quality. I've never really played Crysis or Assassins creed because it was a bit choppy.
I have since installed the T9300 processor and havn't tried crysis since as I replaced my HDD with a 7200 vs the 5400 that was in it.

Jul 6, 2009According to a Dell Rep at least.. This is mostly for the people who have the SXPS 16 with the 3670. I was speaking with a dell rep today and she told me that if I were to buy a 4670 and called tech support.
I could ask for their help to install the video card without voiding warranty. I don't know if this is true..
but does anyone know where to get a 4670 besides Dell's site where it's $109

Jul 27, 2009I bought my XPS laptop a couple of years ago and got it with the 128 mb GeForce 8400M GS.
I read on a couple of different websites that you could upgrade the XPS videocards on the XPS.
I went to the Dell website upgrade section and when I entered my service tag number, video cards wasn't an option to upgrade; though motherboards were.
Is it possible to upgrade the videocard to the 256 mb GeForce GT; which I should have purchased to begin with? Do I have to buy a new motherboard and put the 256 chip on it? Lastly, is the 256 the only video card I can buy to replace the 128?

Mar 11, 2009A couple days ago my E1705 laptop screen started flickering then shut off on me. I restarted my computer but then screen would still not turn on then i found out that my video card was fried.
I bought my E1705 back when Dell only offered the Ati x1400 and the 7800 geforce go cards and i currently have the 7800.
i have searched around and seen that the 7900 gtx go could be a replacement but everyone who talks about it as a replacement came with a later model E1705 with the 7900 gs installed already

Dec 8, 2008Just bought one of these ACER ASPIRE 7720G laptop's from ebay afew days back. It comes with the Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS, but i'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade this card with something that packs more of a punch.
If it is possible, what would be the ideal card for this setup?
The processor is the Intel® C2D T7300 Processor, 2 gb ram, 250gh hd space.

Mar 27, 2010I recently acquire a VGN-SZ491N from ebay and since I don't really like Vista, so I wipe out the hard drive and install Windows 7 Ultimate from scratch. I followed the following steps and everything works fine except for the video card portion.
A. Install Windows 7
B. Install missing / unknown drivers
C. Reboot and install the utilities, in the following order:
1. Sony Utils DLL
2. Sony Shared Library
3. VAIO Event Service
4. Setting Utility Series
After Step C, I reboot my laptop and then able to install Nvidia driver and upgrade the video card from generic one to Nvidia at Speed mode.
But when I manually switch from speed to stigma, nothing happen, so I would like to know what should I do to enable the Intel video card portion and make it work in Windows 7.

Dec 20, 2009I've just received a 1440 as a system exchange. Mine has the Intel graphics. Is it safe to assume that the Intel graphics are integrated into the MOBO? The 1440 is apparently available with an ATI 512MB card.
I'm guessing there is no chance I could pick one up and stick it in this thing?
It still shocks me that I have the ability to throw 8gigs in a laptop. This is a replacement for an E1405 and my I9300 is still my go-to laptop.

Dell :: Inspiron GPU Versus CPU Temperature & Video Card
Apr 9, 2009Ok I have a question that has me a bit confused. I have an inspiron e1505/6400 that has the ati x1400 video card in it.
Now when I recently tore down the laptop I noticed the the heat sink goes over the CPU and another element which everyone says is the GPU. The cpu had thermal grey gunk and the gpu had a purple thermal pad on it.
My question is, if I have the ati card isn't that my gpu? Didn't make sense that the intel 945 board has a gpu if there is already a video card handling graphics.
Also is there anyway to monitor the temperature of the GPU? All the applications I have tried are just showing me cpu temperature and not gpu.
Dell :: Inspiron 9400 Video Card Replacement
Sep 8, 2009I am a long time Dell Inspiron 9400 notebook user. I bought this notebook on February of 2006. So, the notebook is now about 7 months out of its 3 year NBD warranty, which sucks massively as the nVidia GeForce Go 7800 video card has developed some display glitches.
I am having random BSODs with error code: BAD_POOL_CALLER - Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed. After restarting the machine, I can see lots of display glitches both on my external 27" Dell monitor and the notebook screen.
I have run extensive diagnostics - no issues were picked up with CPU, RAM or HDD.
Mind you, the motherboard on this notebook was completely replaced last year due to faulty USB ports.
Questions:
1. What are the chances of paying Dell to extend the warranty? I still would not want to completely ditch this notebook for another year or so.
2. I obviously have to pay for a video card replacement out of my own pocket. What are my best options? Just find a suitable video card on eBay - is that it?
3. Considering I no longer use this machine for gaming, mainly for web browsing, and .NET application development & testing, what is the cheapest video card that will do the job?

Aug 9, 2009I'm working on a laptop of someone I know, it's a Dell Inspiron 8200.The video card seems to be going, because I have lines running down the display. I get them when the computer is hooked up to an external monitor too.
I've already taken it apart to check out the card, but because I didn't have a replacement I had to put it back together. I'm wondering where I could get a replacement card for it.
