I am a long time Dell Inspiron 9400 notebook user. I bought this notebook on February of 2006. So, the notebook is now about 7 months out of its 3 year NBD warranty, which sucks massively as the nVidia GeForce Go 7800 video card has developed some display glitches.
I am having random BSODs with error code: BAD_POOL_CALLER - Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed. After restarting the machine, I can see lots of display glitches both on my external 27" Dell monitor and the notebook screen.
I have run extensive diagnostics - no issues were picked up with CPU, RAM or HDD.
Mind you, the motherboard on this notebook was completely replaced last year due to faulty USB ports.
Questions:
1. What are the chances of paying Dell to extend the warranty? I still would not want to completely ditch this notebook for another year or so.
2. I obviously have to pay for a video card replacement out of my own pocket. What are my best options? Just find a suitable video card on eBay - is that it?
3. Considering I no longer use this machine for gaming, mainly for web browsing, and .NET application development & testing, what is the cheapest video card that will do the job?

I just a problem with my laptop and I decided to reinstall it. And since I have changed my hard drive I dont have a recovery disk so I had to use XP CD and install the drivers one by one. now to the problem.
Först I couldnt download file R88754.exe. the file I had on my computer couldnt install cause it says "resources file missing". What I did is I went to dell website and tried to download the file but the download manager wouldnt let me download.
Here is the problem; After I reinstalled everything works fine execept my S-video. if the S-video cable is connected to my pc and I start my computer it just stay on black screen but if I remove the cable and restart the computer it works fine and I can reconnect the cable after wards and it works fine too.

here are the specs of my Acer Ferrari 3400:
Acer Ferrari 3400
ATI radeon 9700 mobility
2 gigs of ram
Dual boot with Win XP pro and Ubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn
Newest BIOS and software updates from Acer homepage
Few days ago I started having a problem with my Acer Ferrari 3400 laptop. It all started one morning when i tried to boot my computer.
I booted with ubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn and right after the operating system loaded the X graphical interface, the screen went black and the computer freezed.
I rebooted and tried again with Windows XP (I use a dual boot with Win XP and Ubuntu), and this time I got as far as the Windows loading screen. Then the loading screen turned black and the computer just rebooted itself.
I turned off the windows "auto-rebooting in case of error"-option and tried to boot with Win XP again.
This time I got a "blue screen of death (BSOD)" right after the Win XP loading screen. The BSOD indicated a problem with ati2dvag.dll and said that the "device driver got stuck in an infinite loop". Also the technical information said:
** STOP: 0x000000EA (0x8A56C218, 0x8A5BDAD8, 0xBACDFCB4, 0x00000001).
The numbers in parenthesis are always bit different each time i try to boot.
I googled the error and it seems this kind of a error message is very generic and could be the result of nearly anything ranging from software problems to hardware malfunction.
So this is what I have tried to do so far:
- I booted Win XP with VGA mode -> Windows booted normally, but as I try to increase resolution the same BSOD appears and I have to reboot.
-I uninstalled all ATI video drivers from Win XP and windows booted normally. Of course, without video drivers, the performance of Windows was very sloppy. But it worked with higher resolutions.
- I installed the newest Omega Drivers for the vid card. Windows booted normally, but still had sloppy performance. I tried dxdiag and it showed that DirectDraw&Direct3D acceleration are unavailable. It also showed that video card memory was n/a. Win XP worked with high resolutions.
- I tried to boot Ubuntu linux with a generic vesa driver and it booted normally. Changed back to radeon drivers and it didn't work.
- I ran the Memtest 21 times and got no memory based errors
- I cleaned Win XP radeon drivers with DriverCleaner and tried a fresh install of radeon drivers. Didn't work.
- Finally, I did a Win XP recovery (reinstall) with the CD:s that came with the computer. The result: same error as before and now I can't even enter the VGA mode because the windows tries to raise the resolution right before entering the desktop -> BSOD

My geforce go 7900 just went on my inspiron 9400. I went on ebay to check prices for that card or the gtx version but there are really expensive for such an old card.
Does anyone know of any other cards that are compatible with this model? I dont really care what goes in as long as its as cheap as possible, my mum just uses it for internet browsing.

I got a Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705 here that will not boot. The owner said he put into hibernate and went home, when he came in and turned it back on it was sluggish for about 10 minutes, he powered it off and then it would not power back up.
When you turn on the power the power and HD lights come on, you hear what sounds like the HD doing some movement and then it shuts down in a few seconds.
I removed the HD, ram, dvd, wifi, modem and tested it with same results. Also took out the CMOS battery to try to reset the BIOS and put it all back together and same thing.
CPU fan does not spin at all on power up, not sure if this model is supposed to do that little 5 second thing most of them do.
No beeps, nothing on the screen, etc.
Is there a way to determine if its the motherboard OR the video card, as this has a discrete video card, not integrated. Would you get any kind of system response if the video card was dead but the motherboard/cpu was ok ?. I would rather replace one and not both if I can tell which to go after first.
thanks for any ideas or advice.

Last night I went to switch on my dell inspiron 9200 and the initial screen with the bar along the bottom came up but subsequently froze.I powered down and started up again and it did the same thing..
After powering down for the second time, nothing came up at all, although certain lights came on ( bluetooth, power, batt etc ) but then it switched itself off without booting.

I have a Inspiron 9200 that I purchased about 4.5 yrs ago and will be replacing it w/ a Studio 1555.
One of the main reasons is b/c there is something seriously wrong w/ the laptop where it goes extremely slow all of a sudden but especially with watching videos. I can barely watch videos on itunes since every starts going really slow. Playing videos using VLC player helps a lot but other task such as simply minimize a window takes forever. Another big problem is the fans. They are extremely loud when they turn on and the bottom of my laptop gets real hot. Im thinking this is a serious hardware problem since I've tried doing a fresh install of windows XP and i still have the same problems. My friend who knows a lot about computers opened my laptop about year and half ago and found a whole bunch of dusty balls in the fans. He took them out and my laptop fans were not loud anymore and my laptop was a little bit snappier but its gone back to its old ways. What I want to know is what are some possible explanations for the slow down.
Here are the specs for the Inspiron 9200
Pentium M 725 (1.60GHz)
17" UltraSharp Wide Screen XGA+ Display
512MB DDR 333MHz 2 DIMMS
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
40GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
Windows XP SP2
8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g 54Mbps)
53 WHr 6-Cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Is there any Wireless-N mini PCI cards which will work in the Dell 9200? If so, would I have to add a third antenna to make it work? Are there any walk through's or HOW TO's for this kind of upgrade, I've googled and there very little on this.

I've just received a 1440 as a system exchange. Mine has the Intel graphics. Is it safe to assume that the Intel graphics are integrated into the MOBO? The 1440 is apparently available with an ATI 512MB card.
I'm guessing there is no chance I could pick one up and stick it in this thing?
It still shocks me that I have the ability to throw 8gigs in a laptop. This is a replacement for an E1405 and my I9300 is still my go-to laptop.

I was wondering if there is any way to switch or add a graphic card on this laptop. It's probably built in the motherboard so the switch might be impossible. But someone told me maybe there is an empty slot.
Do you guys know??
Stupid thing, I was told the graphic card in there supports OpenGL. The thing is, it supports it "partially".

Ok I have a question that has me a bit confused. I have an inspiron e1505/6400 that has the ati x1400 video card in it.
Now when I recently tore down the laptop I noticed the the heat sink goes over the CPU and another element which everyone says is the GPU. The cpu had thermal grey gunk and the gpu had a purple thermal pad on it.
My question is, if I have the ati card isn't that my gpu? Didn't make sense that the intel 945 board has a gpu if there is already a video card handling graphics.
Also is there anyway to monitor the temperature of the GPU? All the applications I have tried are just showing me cpu temperature and not gpu.

I'm working on a laptop of someone I know, it's a Dell Inspiron 8200.The video card seems to be going, because I have lines running down the display. I get them when the computer is hooked up to an external monitor too.
I've already taken it apart to check out the card, but because I didn't have a replacement I had to put it back together. I'm wondering where I could get a replacement card for it.

I was gifted this Inspiron for my birthday to be a gaming laptop, unfortunatly when I checked what video graphics card I had it was a pretty crummy Intel(R) HD Graphics Family card. This prevents me from playing many games I would like to play on my laptop. My question is: Is there a way to upgrade the graphics card or replace the graphics card.
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz
8 gb of RAM
750 gb hard drive
Microsoft Windows 7 Home PremiumÂ

I got a Dell Inspiron N5010 which comes with Free Dos without drivers. I have been trying for the last week to make the graphics card work without success. I have Windows  7 Pro 64 bit and I followed the Dell Support drivers page after providing my service tags. Nothing works. Windows still sees that as VGA driver with 16 Mbytes of RAM!!! Cannot have high resolution. Also, the characters and fonts looks ugly compared to my 5 year old Acer!! I also downloaded the drivers at Intel site from URL...All my attempts are in vain. I am not sure what else I can try. Windows insists that it is not compatible. On the other hand, all things work perfectly on Linux mint 11.0 but there are applications I need to run on Windows (unfortunately).

i would like to upgrade my video card, if it is possible and if it is worth it. my 1720 has the mobile intel 965 express chipset family. ive seen sigs (dr650se and someformofhuman) stating that they have the nvidia 8600m gt and was wondering if this is compatible with my 1720.
also i found out through this forum that i can upgrade my cpu (which is the measly t5450 1.66 ghz) to the beastly t9300, and add a 2nd hard drive (which is my first step in upgrading this dell because i only have a 160 gb drive).
i was looking for a new laptop until i came across this forum and found out the possibilities of my dell. i decided to stick with this and just upgrade it! thanks for the insight, and thanks in advance for all the help that i will be asking for!

the wireless driver on the Dell website does NOT work. Googling this problem leads me to believe that I am not the only one with it.
However I have not seen anyone with a solution; most people are just linked to the Dell website and the Dell driver, which doesn't work at all.

I upgraded my daughters Inspiron 1520 to Windows 8 and everything works well. The only problem we are having is the memory card reader does not work. Windows 8 recognizes it and shows the action center flag and advises us to install a new driver.. We install the driver R188776.exe, install it, and re-boot, but the memory card reader still doesn't work.. Is there another driver we can install?

I've recently accidentally dropped my n5110 ci5 laptop. It was a hard crash that the screen cracked. Later i had the screen replaced and checked that all hardware is working properly. Everything was fine except my laptop can no longer detect my NVIDIA Gt525m Graphic Card. I really need it for my advanced modeling and rendering purposes. What i know is that display is working and it's definitely using Intel HD Graphics 3000. I tried re-installing video drivers but the setup won't continue saying that it can't detect any compatible hardware.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop/notebook which recently has started to get green pixels throughout the whole screen. Have also tested external monitor and get the same result.
I have searched, googled and even called dell and the response on all cases was that i need to replace my graphics card.
The graphics card i originally have in it is a Nvidia Geforce Go 7800 graphics card 256MB. Model number is P494 (if that helps makes it easier)
Could someone pls advise me or any compatible cards where i can get the same card or any other card which is compatible and a reasonable price.
I am also after a WLAN card. WLAN Dell part number 0KC501 and also require the 2 cables for Main and Aux or the connectors which click on them as mine are completely damaged and need to be replaced.

today's finally the day my laptop decided to finally die. Seems like the GPU's memory got corrupted in some way, being unable to run Windows itself unless it's in Safe Mode.
I started realizing this was the case when the Windows loading bar showed green dots all over the screen, plus giving a lot of BSODs about PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA and finally, when I just logged into regular Windows, started having extreme graphics problems.

My inspiron 9400 will not boot. The only functions I can see is the battery light comes on when plugged in to indicate that it is charging, and when I press the power button the power light comes on for 5 seconds then goes off, thats it.
I thought this problem was the board earlier, so I replaced it with a tested motherboard and am having the same problem.
I have also tried booting with just AC adaptor and just battery, no change. Right now my only idea is the CPU, is this feasible? Can somebody help me with this?
