Dell :: On The 9400/E1705 How Can You Tell If Its The Motherboard Or Video Card ?
Mar 12, 2010
I got a Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705 here that will not boot. The owner said he put into hibernate and went home, when he came in and turned it back on it was sluggish for about 10 minutes, he powered it off and then it would not power back up.
When you turn on the power the power and HD lights come on, you hear what sounds like the HD doing some movement and then it shuts down in a few seconds.
I removed the HD, ram, dvd, wifi, modem and tested it with same results. Also took out the CMOS battery to try to reset the BIOS and put it all back together and same thing.
CPU fan does not spin at all on power up, not sure if this model is supposed to do that little 5 second thing most of them do.
No beeps, nothing on the screen, etc.
Is there a way to determine if its the motherboard OR the video card, as this has a discrete video card, not integrated. Would you get any kind of system response if the video card was dead but the motherboard/cpu was ok ?. I would rather replace one and not both if I can tell which to go after first.
thanks for any ideas or advice.

My 7950GTX failed and all replacement cards I've seen on Ebay, from the X1400, 7900GS or better are overpriced.
Since I won't be gaming with my laptop anymore, I was thinking of replacing my motherboard with the one with integrated onboard video, which is more cost effective.
Do you know if it fits, meaning will my current LCD connector fits this motherboard ? Should I expect a bad surprise?

Could a few technologists in the know give me a detailed rundown on the primary differences between the three nVidia card options for the E1705/9400?
I quickly replaced my original X1400 with a dual pipe 7900GS but I am now interested in either moving up to a 7900GTX or a 7950GTX. I know I will also need to upgrade to the 130W or 150W PS as well.
I am looking for comparison information regarding memory, clockspeeds, pipeline counts, pixel/vertex units, pixel/fill rates, processing bandwidth, etc.
I am also curious about a good source for the purchase of any of these items. I have found one posting on eBay for a 7950GTX. I am interested to know if I can purchase directly from Dell, or save a few bucks by purchasing from eBay or a forum member. I also know I have read that there are equivalent Quadro (sp?) cards which will work in my machine. Are there any disadvantages to taking this route?
I know I could dig through a thousand plus posts on the topics and find all of the information I want, but I also know how much you guys thrive on expressing your technical expertise on subjects such as this ..........................

I am a long time Dell Inspiron 9400 notebook user. I bought this notebook on February of 2006. So, the notebook is now about 7 months out of its 3 year NBD warranty, which sucks massively as the nVidia GeForce Go 7800 video card has developed some display glitches.
I am having random BSODs with error code: BAD_POOL_CALLER - Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed. After restarting the machine, I can see lots of display glitches both on my external 27" Dell monitor and the notebook screen.
I have run extensive diagnostics - no issues were picked up with CPU, RAM or HDD.
Mind you, the motherboard on this notebook was completely replaced last year due to faulty USB ports.
Questions:
1. What are the chances of paying Dell to extend the warranty? I still would not want to completely ditch this notebook for another year or so.
2. I obviously have to pay for a video card replacement out of my own pocket. What are my best options? Just find a suitable video card on eBay - is that it?
3. Considering I no longer use this machine for gaming, mainly for web browsing, and .NET application development & testing, what is the cheapest video card that will do the job?

about a year ago my e1705's video card memory had a error and I had colored stripes on the screen. I researched a little and found that I could upgrade my card to a xps 512mb card and so I did. Now a few days ago my screen went black and I freaked out thinking my video card died but a few seconds later everything was fine again. Today, the same thing happened although this time the black screen turned to a blue error screen saying "***Hardware Malfunction Call your hardware vendor for support NMI: Parity check/ memory parity error ***The system has haulted***" I ran the diagnostic and the graphics card memory is showing errors. I checked ebay and another card is $300. What options do I have? I like my laptop but I'm kind of tired of this problem especially if I buy another card and expect it to happen again.

Alright, as you can see in my sig, I am the "lucky" owner of a GeForce 7800. I bought my E1705 RIGHT before the Core Duo 2 and 7900 GS wave, but I haven't had any real problems (besides the annoying overheating of the 7800, never caused a crash, just low FPS sometimes during gaming).
Well I went to check my laptop this morning, and after the Windows loading screen (during the Welcome screen) it would glitch and get all scrambled, then jam up.
So I went into safe mode, un-installed all the video drivers, rebooted and it worked fine. Went and downloaded the newest drivers possible from the Official Dell site just to make sure I wasn't using faulty drivers.
But halfway through the install the screen would glitch and what not, I had to go back into safe mode and uninstall the drivers again and it worked fine.
This laptop has no warranty or anything, so if it truly is that the video card finally died I guess my only option is to buy a 7900 GS or GTX?
Just looking for some opinions (I'd hate to buy a card and find out it was some other problem with the laptop, even though I'm not a fan of this 7800 ) to make sure this truly is a video card problem, and to see if anyone knows where I might find a GS/GTX for decent prices.

I have a 1705 with 2x1gb RAM, and a 7900GS. Every now and then the computer BSOD's and says memory parity error.
Is this my RAM or the video card? I can't seem to find a strait answer. I also get random vertical lines on post but it goes away when windows starts, so thats why I think the video card is going.

A couple days ago my E1705 laptop screen started flickering then shut off on me. I restarted my computer but then screen would still not turn on then i found out that my video card was fried.
I bought my E1705 back when Dell only offered the Ati x1400 and the 7800 geforce go cards and i currently have the 7800.
i have searched around and seen that the 7900 gtx go could be a replacement but everyone who talks about it as a replacement came with a later model E1705 with the 7900 gs installed already

Anyone know a place to get cheap video card replacements for the E1705. My 7900 just went bye bye. Ebay is trying to charge 300 which is way to much for how much I want to spend.

The screen on my 1705 has recently become cranky... scrambled, alternating between being on/off, inevitably leading to a BlueSOD (with nv4_disp error message.) Managed to check/update video drivers, but computer is pretty much non-functioning now.
Only thing that I can think of is that video card overheated and fried. In hindsight, I realize that I had spent a couple hours watching 24 with the computer not a good surface to allow ventilation.
Any other opinions before a I spend a couple hundred bucks on a new card?

So, not too long ago the 7800 Geforce Go in my e1705 inspiron started giving me weird visual artifacts (I determined the problem was the video card because I found forum threads with other people who have had this problem).
So I did what was suggested in these threads and bought a stripped card from eBay. I got a x1400 ATI mobility card from some seller in Hong Kong. Last night I did the arduous procedure of swapping out the old card for the new, and booted it up and got into Ubuntu Linux (I dual boot Linux and Windows) and it looked better than it ever had.
Today I made the discovery that all was not well on my computer. It seems that certain colors do not display correctly anymore, regardless of drivers or OS or video settings

I'm getting the same thing -- artifacts during bootup, drivers won't initialize properly, safe mode works in VGA mode but there are patterns throughout.
I also went into Dell diagnostics and in the second diagnostic program (not the initial one that comes up, but the second one you actually interact with after exiting the first one) it will actually check the memory of the video card, contrary to what I've read around here ......

I was just given (free!!!) an Inspiron E1705 -- 2.16Ghz core2, I'm putting 2GB ram in for $40, have a spare 320GB disk laying around, even came with a power supply. The original owner had video problems with it within months of purchasing,
and rather than going after the warranty, simply shelved it an bought a new one (!). So basically I am looking at a barely used notebook that does 1920x1200 on a 17" screen -- free! Needless to say I'd like to put a few buck in it and make it work.
Here's the problem:
I've done a little research and it seems like artifacts aren't terribly uncommon on this model, and most have said its fixed with a new video card. Trouble is, the only one on Ebay ($40) also has artifacts as per the seller, and the online retailers want up to $536 (not a typo) for one. Really? .....

I've got an e1705, configured with an ATI x1400.
I bought the nVidia GeForce GO 7900GS to upgrade.
After installing, I get these blocks and pixels during boot (see photo below)
Vista begins to load but never makes it to the logo or login screens. I get a blue Memory Dump message for a split second and then the system reboots.
I reinstalled the x1400 after this happened. I ordered a replacement for the 7900GS but the replacement has the same problem.
This obviously isn't a driver problem since it happens during POST, before any drivers are even loaded.
why this would happen with two different 7900GS cards?
For the record, I'm a Dell Certified technician for the Inspiron series.

A friend of mine has a Inspiron E1705 with a now-dead 7900M GTX. I was wondering if it is possible to put a 7800 Go GTX in it?
I could do a little upgrade for myself by buying his video-card-less notebook and putting my 9300's 7800Go GTX in

I have a high end speced Inspiron 9400:
2.13 core 2 duo, 2gig ram, 100gig 7200 rpm hd, 1920x1600 true life screen, 7800go gfx which I purchased in June 2006. I am in the UK so this cost me £1100 from the Dell outlet.
During December 2007 it has had 4 service calls where the motherboard, graphics card, and lcd have been changed 4 times with the same fault occurring (lines on lcd).
Dell have kindly agreed at my request to swap the laptop for a new 9400, but as the 9400 is no longer in production Dell said they will give me a similar spec 1720 instead, which was nice of them and I agreed. Here is the spec for the 1720:
2.2gig cpu, 2gig ram, 160 5400rpm hd, 8600 gfx, 1920x1600 lcd.
All seemed fine but slower hd which I can live with (just about).
I then started doing some research and discovered the 8600 is slower than the 7800 I had? and the laptop has no DVI port! I used to connect the 9400 to my external montior and sometimes my HD TV using the DVI and will miss it dearly on the 1720.
Would it be unreasonable for me to ask for a higher spec machine over the 1720?

I thought I would put the E7105 through some tests to see what various Memory configs benchmark at.
Starting with 1 Gig Single DDR @ 533 Mhz, then 2 x 1 GB @ 533 in Dual Channel
Then I mixed a 2 GB @ 667 mhz with the 1 GB @ 533 Mhz
Last the 2 x 2 GB Memory @ 667.
I ran Super Pi on each config, Sandra Memory Benchmarks, and 3DMark06.
Did not see any Difference in the 3DMark Tests.
Video Memory Reported as 495 MB Video 248 MB System 743 Mb Texture
1 GB Tests
Super Pi = 5.38.14 ( 5 Min 38.14 Seconds)
Sandra Tests
Memory Bandwidth = 3258 MB/S
Latency = 118 ns
Cache & Memory = 14416 MB/S
2 GB Tests
Super Pi = 5.28.625 ( 5 Min 28.625 Seconds)

I'm attempting to upgrade my wife's 9400/e1705 but it's been so long since I gave a damn about mobile CPU's that I've forgotten which ones will fit and which ones won't.
I know she has a core solo 1.66 yonah, and I know it can fit certain T1** and T2**, and I know there's a screaming fast one out there, but I don't want to buy the wrong thing.

My friend just told me he heard this was true. Can anyone confirm? I know there are 2 different brands of LCDs floating around in the E1705/9400. A Samsung model, and a Phillips. However he claimed that the M1710 used one different than the E1705/9400, and was a blazing 30% brighter.

Fixes and Enhancements:
1. Update thermal table for NVidia graphic.
I'm amazed they decided to update the bios after such a long time. Hopefully this will fix our toasty graphics cards.

So here we go :
1) I'm ordering in a FX2500 to replace my 7800 go. I'm currently using Extreme-G Mobileforce driver 92.91 (I've tried some of the newer versions but prefer this one). Will this driver be compatible with the FX2500?
2) What are the best drivers for the FX2500 if not Mobileforce?
3) Overclocking... I've read the posts about flashing the 7900GTX bios to enable overclocking, does this mean i cannot overclock using the normal software way. In the Mobileforce drivers for the 7800, the option is in the Advanced Settings options in Windows. Does the FX2500/7950GTX not have this option and is BIOS flashing the only way to overclock the card?
4) If the BIOS flash is to enable voltage adjustments as well as clock adjustments, is this something I need to do or will the card do well with just altered clock speeds?

I ran Win7's Upgrade Advisor and got a couple flags on Inspiron 9400's hardware. But I've heard that people have nstalled Win7 on them (with mixed results).
A couple reports on graphics malfunctions, and someone said the Sigmatel drivers were not found.
I wouldn't bother, but I have a couple development projects that require Win7.
Wondering if anyone has had good luck with Win7, and whether there are certain things to watch out for. All drivers work OK? Did you install 32-bit or 64-bit?
