Dell :: Is There A Power Supply Gremlin?

Apr 26, 2009

I’ve seen 2 fairly new Dell laptops recently (a Latitude D520 and an Inspiron E1705) with the same symptoms. With a known good adapter attached to the unit, they do not charge at all,

but they run off the battery until the battery dies. I disassembled both and checked the connection between the power jack and the mobo and found them to be solid.

I connected a power source directly to the + solder point on the mobo and a ground and found they did not power up at all. If this were a desktop, I would change the power supply immediately, but being a laptop, I’m not sure what (if anything) can be done to fix the problem. Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

What I've done:
1. Both units work normally with charged batteries, so I know I'm working with good laptops.
2. Removed, cleaned contacts and re-inserted RAM.
3. Cleaned accumulation from the internal lint trap, i.e., from the CPU cooling fins.
4. Removed, cleaned, re-applied thermal paste and reseated CPU'

Dell :: Universal Power Supply

Sep 27, 2009

So i have a new e6400 moved from an e4200. Figured I could use the nice dell travel adapter I had with my 4200. Once i plugged it into my new beast i got a not enough wattage message from DCP.

Which is fine, I now realize that my nice slim power adapter is very much under powered for this laptop.

I went out and got a Cooler Master SNA 95 it is a 95 watt adaptor and acutally is really small and light. Got it home and plugged it in and I got this message .....

Dell :: Power Supply Model # Matter Much?

May 1, 2010

needed a new charger, dell listed 5 options for my service tag #. So I called them and the guy in india said said the NF599 was the one I need if I wanted the 6' cord.

Put NF599 into amazon and ordered one, received a UU572. Specs all appear to be the same, this one doesnt say 90w anywhere on it but the specs online all say 90w. Its also a 3 prong and not a 2 prong like the NF599, that may actually be nice so it doesnt fall out of the socket so easily.

Dell :: 1730 Faulty Battery/mb/or Power Supply?

Mar 6, 2009

I have a problem with my XPS 1730 laptop, this started probably 4 months ago. (second laptop that has screwed up after the warranty ended). I'm hopeless at explaining stuff, so i'll do it in point forms.

* First sign of trouble started when i booted up my comp one day and it beeped before loading windows and paused saying something like

"AC power adaptor not recognised, press F1 to continue F2 to enter setup, system will run slower"

If i continued then it did run really slow (even though power option was set on high performance) and the battery didnt charge.

* Every time i turned on my computer i had to keep putting the power cable in and out, adjusting it as i did so, until the battery light on the top right (near the lcd screen) flashed. If that didnt flash and i turned it on then the unknown power adaptor message would come up.

Dell :: Proper Part Number For 130 Or 150 Watt Power Supply

Nov 3, 2007

I've recently upgraded to a Quadro 2500m in my 9400. Sometimes after playing games for awhile it will freeze up for a second and then get really slow (sometimes staircase like lines will appear on the monitor). I doubt the 2500m is broken since it came in a sealed Dell box and my temps aren't too high, so I'm suspecting that the 130W adapter that I got off of eBay is not really up to it. I noticed that sometimes when it boots up it cannot recognize the adapter (Press F1 to continue, F2 for setup etc...) but other times it recognizes it as the 130W adapter fine.

I also noticed that that PA-13 that I have was made in 2004...isn't that way before any of the Inspiron 9400s came out?

So I'm wondering if anyone knows where to get a reputable 130/150W adapter and/or what the part numbers are that people have been using successfully.

Dell Inspiron 15 :: Will Not Boot Up - Power Supply Light Blinks On And Off

Feb 5, 2013

My Dell Inspiron 15 will not boot up. Started randomly shutting down over a week period. Would also display a plaid screen which would require a hard shut down by me.  I was trying to run Dell diagnostics on it and noted that the video card failed, but it could not complete the diagnostic without shutting down.  Now the power supply light blinks on and off in a 10 second interval.  It acts like it has no power, but I know the battery was charged.

Sony :: Vaio Does Not Turn On Without Battery, Bad Power Supply

May 4, 2010

I have a 12'' sony vaio with a 16V power adapter. My battery is not good anymore, it was not even holding for 20Min, but my problem now is that the computer does not turn on without the battery at all. I have to leave it charging for hours, then it will go on, but in the middle of the windows loading process it shuts down and does not show any signs of life until you leave it charging for another hour. The voltage output out of the power supply shows 14.70 ~ 15.20 never gets to 16V. Now, comes the questions...

This particular laptop needs a good battery to " buffer" power and the AC adapter only charges the battery but does not have enough Amps to run the computer without the battery?

or

Do i have a Bad power adapter that is not even charging the battery properly?

or

Bad power supply and battery?

Sony :: Kensington Universal Power Supply & VGN-SR Series

Feb 16, 2009

Anyone use one of Kensington's universal power supplies with their VGN-SR? Trying to figure out which "smart tip" to use.

Their compatibility wizard on the Kensington website doesn't list the VGN-SR290; only lists a Vaio SR series. I think this may be referring to an older series and not the VGN-SR line. The tip the wizard recommends for this 'Vaio SR series" is N15, which, according to the power supply instrcution manual has output volatge of 15-17V. Another tip, tip N27, has output volatge of 17-20V. The power brick that came with my SR290 indicates a 19.5V output (Sony VGP-AC19V25 - 19.5V, 4.7a)

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: IdeaPad Y510P Will Not Recognize AC Power Supply

Jun 15, 2014

I have just received this laptop. I followed the instructions out of the box, installing the battery, then connecting the power. The battery started charging that first time, but after that, any time I tried reconnecting the A/C power supply, the laptop would not recognize the adapter and I am not able to charge my battery.

I have tried the following steps:

1. Shutting down the computer, removing the battery, and starting the computer from the A/C power supply. The computer will not recognize the A/C power supply to turn on the computer.

2. Updating all the power management drivers. Everything was already installed properly.

3. Using the Lenovo Energy Management battery gauge. I must have the A/C power supply plugged in to use it, but the computer still won't recognize it.

4. Held down the power button for 30-40 seconds then reset the BIOS to default settings. No change

5. Tested my outlets and connections between my AC adapter cords. Everything is working properly.

There is one way that I can get the computer to recognize the AC adapter, and that involves all of these steps shown below, but when I unplug the AC adapter I am right back to the beginning, and I have to redo the whole process. I have just received this laptop and I am quite sure that you shouldn't have to go through this process every time you want to recharge the battery, or use your computer while only powered by the AC adapter.

Steps I have to take to recharge my battery:

A.  Disconnect the A/C power supply.
B.  Shut down the computer.
C.  Remove the battery
D.  Connect the A/C power supply
E.  Start the computer.
F.  Uninstall all battery drivers that are labeled Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery (which come back every time).
G. Shut the computer down.
H. Disconnect the A/C power supply.
I. Insert the battery.
J. Insert the A/C power supply.
K. Start the computer.

That is the ONLY way I have gotten my computer to recognize the A/C power supply. I know the power supply is functional, but why I have to go through all of those steps for the laptop to recognize it.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T540p - Intermittent Power Supply Connector?

Nov 3, 2010

Symptoms: Laptop switches off unexpectedly; unexpected failure to charge battery; random changes in brightness. Messages appear such as: "This AC adapter may not provide enough power to your Lenovo computer. Please reconnect the proper AC adapter"; "Battery 2: There is an error"; Do you want to switch to 'Airplane in-seat power plan' (if this option is enabled in Power Manager).

This is why I think the power connector is to blame: I opened Power Manager to the Battery tab and also ran BatteryInfoView by Nirsoft. With the power connector firmly plugged in at the back of the laptop and with "90W AC adapter is attached" showing in PM, moving the connector slightly from side to side often triggers one of the symptoms. The two apps then indicate that the AC adapter is no longer present and that charging has stopped. In some cases vibration due to typing or moving the laptop is enough to trigger a symptom.

Supporting evidence: After I taped the power adapter's output cable to the laptop so the plug cannot easily move in its receptacle I found the symptoms stopped (see photo).

Summary:This is a serious annoyance. It means I can't rely on the battery being properly charged when I need it, or that the machine will stay running when I leave it unattended.

I think its possible, that i have made some failure with the drivers. The ThinkPad Power Managers always stops working after booting. So i have removed the program by using the "msconfig" functionality.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: Power Manager Alerts That 65w AC Adapter Is Giving Not Enough Power

Oct 23, 2013

I have just installed an i7 2670Qm on my T420 today. The machine will crash pretty soon after booting up, with the screen having colorful vertical and horizontal lines before it restarts itself and give the memory error beeping pattern (1 beep-pause-3 beeps-3 beeps-pause-1 beep). So then I took out one RAM from the bottom, and the machine appears to work normally again, more or less.

In the OS (Win7 64), The power manager alerts me that the 65w AC adapter is giving not enough power, so the laptop is running on battery. I thought I just need a 90W AC brick so the laptop will work as it should, so I am arranging a 90w one to come in later. But on a second thought, if the battery cannot start the laptop with 8GB of RAM properly.

Is it the CPU or RAM or Mobo or something else? Where should I look? The machine works fine with the previous CPU i3-2310m and 8GB of RAM.The RAM modules I have are 2 x 4GB Samsung 2Rx8 PC3-12800S-11-11-F3.The BIOS version is updated to the latest 1.46.

HP Pavilion G6-2148TX :: Laptop Will Only Power On With Power Cable Disconnected At Motherboard After Fan Replacement

Oct 21, 2014

After replacing the fan, I have a power up issue with the laptop. Basically, the laptop will only power on with the power cable disconnected at the motherboard. It was by mistake that after the fan was replaced and everything was put back together, that I noticed that the battery was not charging.

I then reopened the machine and reconnected the power cable to the motherboard and nothing - no power.

When plugging in the power source with the battery in place, the LED adjacent to the power socket lights up WHITE then stays ORANGE and will not power up. No other lights, no fan noise, nothing.

If I remove the battery, the LED adjacent to the power socket lights up WHITE and stays white however will not power up either. Same agin, no other LEDs, not fan noise, nothing.

I have now opened the machine back up and disconnected the power from the motherboard. Put it all back together and the laptop powers up as normal with the battery and it works fine. (Well until the battery runs out anyway).
