Sony :: Vaio Does Not Turn On Without Battery, Bad Power Supply
May 4, 2010
I have a 12'' sony vaio with a 16V power adapter. My battery is not good anymore, it was not even holding for 20Min, but my problem now is that the computer does not turn on without the battery at all. I have to leave it charging for hours, then it will go on, but in the middle of the windows loading process it shuts down and does not show any signs of life until you leave it charging for another hour. The voltage output out of the power supply shows 14.70 ~ 15.20 never gets to 16V. Now, comes the questions...
This particular laptop needs a good battery to " buffer" power and the AC adapter only charges the battery but does not have enough Amps to run the computer without the battery?
or
Do i have a Bad power adapter that is not even charging the battery properly?
I have a VAIO VGN SZ230P. It has always worked fine. Recently, it has begun to hibernate after about 5 minutes when plugged into its power supply. When on battery, it operates normally. I have tried two different power supplies, same problem. All sleep, hibernation and power setting are off, yet it still happens. All virus and malware scans come up clean.
I have a problem with my XPS 1730 laptop, this started probably 4 months ago. (second laptop that has screwed up after the warranty ended). I'm hopeless at explaining stuff, so i'll do it in point forms.
* First sign of trouble started when i booted up my comp one day and it beeped before loading windows and paused saying something like
"AC power adaptor not recognised, press F1 to continue F2 to enter setup, system will run slower"
If i continued then it did run really slow (even though power option was set on high performance) and the battery didnt charge.
* Every time i turned on my computer i had to keep putting the power cable in and out, adjusting it as i did so, until the battery light on the top right (near the lcd screen) flashed. If that didnt flash and i turned it on then the unknown power adaptor message would come up.
Anyone use one of Kensington's universal power supplies with their VGN-SR? Trying to figure out which "smart tip" to use.
Their compatibility wizard on the Kensington website doesn't list the VGN-SR290; only lists a Vaio SR series. I think this may be referring to an older series and not the VGN-SR line. The tip the wizard recommends for this 'Vaio SR series" is N15, which, according to the power supply instrcution manual has output volatge of 15-17V. Another tip, tip N27, has output volatge of 17-20V. The power brick that came with my SR290 indicates a 19.5V output (Sony VGP-AC19V25 - 19.5V, 4.7a)
I have a HP Compaq 2230S business laptop, but this question could be put to any HP laptop. The fan is constantly running when the laptop is plugged into the power outlet, but as soon as I pull the plug to run on battery power the fan powers down and stops. I re-plug the laptop back in and the fan kicks up again.
This is not good as I almost burned myself when I picked up the laptop after an hour sitting on the table on battery power. The hard drive is right beside the processor, so the laptop gets really hot.
Vista x64 Ultimate is what I'm using at the moment and my power scheme calls for 1% minimum and 100% maximum CPU on battery power.
Working on a dell Inspiron b130 laptop. The power is plugged in, and battery is in. The power will not turn on at all, no fan or CPU. The main power light comes on when button is pressed for a moment then goes off. The battery light flashes slowly. The power cord adapter has a light on it and that says its working. I have tried taking the battery out and that does nothing.
I had assumed since its an older laptop that maybe the power was so drained that it needed it to be charged a little to have enough power to turn on. But it's been awhile an nothing yet. Is it trashed? We do have another hard drive around to try would that matter at all?
The computer is in dead state the next morning after I switched its Windows power plan to high performance. In order to unlock power plan options, I disabled connected standby via a registry key in HKLMSystemControlSet001ControlPowerCsEnabled to 0. Â After investigating, I read that this computer doesn't support normal hibernate wake-up process other than connected standby. I select shut down option in the menu (hibernate option disappeared). It's possible that shut down option in the menu was actually set to sleep/hibernate in power settings by default. Â The battery was at 100% before I last turned it off.
The LED power indicator doesn't light on when power supply is connected on either DC or microUsb.
I’ve seen 2 fairly new Dell laptops recently (a Latitude D520 and an Inspiron E1705) with the same symptoms. With a known good adapter attached to the unit, they do not charge at all,
but they run off the battery until the battery dies. I disassembled both and checked the connection between the power jack and the mobo and found them to be solid.
I connected a power source directly to the + solder point on the mobo and a ground and found they did not power up at all. If this were a desktop, I would change the power supply immediately, but being a laptop, I’m not sure what (if anything) can be done to fix the problem. Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
What I've done: 1. Both units work normally with charged batteries, so I know I'm working with good laptops. 2. Removed, cleaned contacts and re-inserted RAM. 3. Cleaned accumulation from the internal lint trap, i.e., from the CPU cooling fins. 4. Removed, cleaned, re-applied thermal paste and reseated CPU'
So i have a new e6400 moved from an e4200. Figured I could use the nice dell travel adapter I had with my 4200. Once i plugged it into my new beast i got a not enough wattage message from DCP.
Which is fine, I now realize that my nice slim power adapter is very much under powered for this laptop.
I went out and got a Cooler Master SNA 95 it is a 95 watt adaptor and acutally is really small and light. Got it home and plugged it in and I got this message .....
I'm shopping for a spare power supply for my M4400 that need to be able to do full GPU/CPU load for 8 hour a day will the the90W do it or I need to go 130W.
I still have not used the battery so I could deactivate battery charging on the spare PSU
needed a new charger, dell listed 5 options for my service tag #. So I called them and the guy in india said said the NF599 was the one I need if I wanted the 6' cord.
Put NF599 into amazon and ordered one, received a UU572. Specs all appear to be the same, this one doesnt say 90w anywhere on it but the specs online all say 90w. Its also a 3 prong and not a 2 prong like the NF599, that may actually be nice so it doesnt fall out of the socket so easily.
Is the standard power supply unit compatible with hp docking station? I've seen a lot of cheap used docking stations on ebay - unfortunately many of them are sold withou power supply unit.
I use lap top G62. Untill yesterday its working fine. But due to my stupidity for cleaning the fan i opened it and cleaned it and fixed all the parts accordingly. Now the lap top is not turning on, i dono what the problem is but the power button is not showing the glow of LED nor the fan is working. The battery is working fine (i checked on others lappi) and even when i connect to an AC power supply the LED shows charging sign.
I've recently upgraded to a Quadro 2500m in my 9400. Sometimes after playing games for awhile it will freeze up for a second and then get really slow (sometimes staircase like lines will appear on the monitor). I doubt the 2500m is broken since it came in a sealed Dell box and my temps aren't too high, so I'm suspecting that the 130W adapter that I got off of eBay is not really up to it. I noticed that sometimes when it boots up it cannot recognize the adapter (Press F1 to continue, F2 for setup etc...) but other times it recognizes it as the 130W adapter fine.
I also noticed that that PA-13 that I have was made in 2004...isn't that way before any of the Inspiron 9400s came out?
So I'm wondering if anyone knows where to get a reputable 130/150W adapter and/or what the part numbers are that people have been using successfully.
My Dell Inspiron 15 will not boot up. Started randomly shutting down over a week period. Would also display a plaid screen which would require a hard shut down by me. I was trying to run Dell diagnostics on it and noted that the video card failed, but it could not complete the diagnostic without shutting down. Now the power supply light blinks on and off in a 10 second interval.  It acts like it has no power, but I know the battery was charged.Â
I have just received this laptop. I followed the instructions out of the box, installing the battery, then connecting the power. The battery started charging that first time, but after that, any time I tried reconnecting the A/C power supply, the laptop would not recognize the adapter and I am not able to charge my battery.  I have tried the following steps:  1. Shutting down the computer, removing the battery, and starting the computer from the A/C power supply. The computer will not recognize the A/C power supply to turn on the computer.  2. Updating all the power management drivers. Everything was already installed properly.  3. Using the Lenovo Energy Management battery gauge. I must have the A/C power supply plugged in to use it, but the computer still won't recognize it.  4. Held down the power button for 30-40 seconds then reset the BIOS to default settings. No change  5. Tested my outlets and connections between my AC adapter cords. Everything is working properly.  There is one way that I can get the computer to recognize the AC adapter, and that involves all of these steps shown below, but when I unplug the AC adapter I am right back to the beginning, and I have to redo the whole process. I have just received this laptop and I am quite sure that you shouldn't have to go through this process every time you want to recharge the battery, or use your computer while only powered by the AC adapter.  Steps I have to take to recharge my battery:  A. Disconnect the A/C power supply. B. Shut down the computer. C. Remove the battery D. Connect the A/C power supply E. Start the computer. F. Uninstall all battery drivers that are labeled Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery (which come back every time). G. Shut the computer down. H. Disconnect the A/C power supply. I. Insert the battery. J. Insert the A/C power supply. K. Start the computer.  That is the ONLY way I have gotten my computer to recognize the A/C power supply. I know the power supply is functional, but why I have to go through all of those steps for the laptop to recognize it.
Symptoms: Laptop switches off unexpectedly; unexpected failure to charge battery; random changes in brightness. Messages appear such as: "This AC adapter may not provide enough power to your Lenovo computer. Please reconnect the proper AC adapter"; "Battery 2: There is an error"; Do you want to switch to 'Airplane in-seat power plan' (if this option is enabled in Power Manager).
This is why I think the power connector is to blame: I opened Power Manager to the Battery tab and also ran BatteryInfoView by Nirsoft. With the power connector firmly plugged in at the back of the laptop and with "90W AC adapter is attached" showing in PM, moving the connector slightly from side to side often triggers one of the symptoms. The two apps then indicate that the AC adapter is no longer present and that charging has stopped. In some cases vibration due to typing or moving the laptop is enough to trigger a symptom.
Supporting evidence: After I taped the power adapter's output cable to the laptop so the plug cannot easily move in its receptacle I found the symptoms stopped (see photo).
Summary:This is a serious annoyance. It means I can't rely on the battery being properly charged when I need it, or that the machine will stay running when I leave it unattended.
My X200 (three or four years old) has a new battery (few months only) and has never had any power issue. Suddenly since last week it will not operate without the power supply plug in. Â Battery is showing 100% and condition excellent, but the second I remove/unpower the power supply plug, the system crashes. On restart with power supply attached, the battery indicator shows 1%! Â It then gradually creeps up to 4% and after maybe 5 mins it leaps back up to 100%.
I have screen flickering problem with my Acer Aspire 725 with windows 8 OS. Flickering stops when i remove the power supply. I could see the battery plugged and unplugged symbol in Windows 8 continuously. Whether i should replace my battery or power supply adaptor?
My thinkpad T410 (2537-UQF) with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD only boots if the power supply is plugged in. If i have full battery and try to boot without the power supply i get a blue screen after being about 60 seconds in the screen where the windows logo appears. I have Windows 7 installed fresh a few days ago. Â I think its possible, that i have made some failure with the drivers. The ThinkPad Power Managers always stops working after booting. So i have removed the program by using the "msconfig" functionality.
I have an Acer Aspire 7740-6656 that shows no signs of life. I have tried removing and replacing the battery as well as trying different locations to plug into power. I have even tried removing battery and power supply and holding start buttom 30 seconds. Except for a green light on the power supply cord, still no signs of life. What if any are my options?
I have had this Vaio notebook for over a year now and this morning I went to open the lid and turn the laptop on and there were no lights or any response.
I took out the battery and put it back in to see if the connectors were loose but the problem remains.
i buy new Laptop sony vpccw16f,when i turn off my computer nothing happen but when i gone to Hibernate i dont know why turn on itself.i checked my wiresless is off and none cd/dvd in rom.anyway i really appriciated if tell me how can i fix this.i use Win7 so i really dont know where can i find that thing to disable or enable.
I was just sitting there browsing the internet and the damn thing just shut off and now it won't turn back on. The battery was totally charged... so does that just mean it's fried or what? It's a year and a half old so .
my Sony SZ2 (SZ2VP/X - 3years old) did an instant shutdown while running in battery mode (expect Battery around 30%).
After this I tried booting the notebook. By pressing or holding the power button no LED's illuminated.
At home I tried to charge the battery with AC adaptor. Again no LED's illuminated. With or without AC adapter and battery - no chance to get the Sony SZ running anymore.
Because I have no longer warranty I opened the notebook with the help of a repair manual.
You can see some pics in my picasa webgallery.
At this photo the battery connecter looks strange?
Where can I get a cheap repair, or some spare parts like mainboard?
The SZ was already repaired in November 2007 - it got a new Display. Power+battery LED's illuminated, but it didn't start.
Now even the LED's show nothing about the condition.
