Dell :: M4400 - No Official Graphics Driver For The Machine?
Jan 13, 2009
I got myself a lovely little Precision M4400 on christmas eve. It was downgraded from Vista to XP from Dell. Since I have a specific way of setting up my systems, I spent a week in januray installing the OS from scratch.
Usually this isn't a problem, I have installed my own systems the past 15 years, and things have worked out pretty good so far. But there are some things about the M4400 that I simply don't understand, and I hope there are someone here that can guide me towards a solution.
The specs are: Dell Precision M4400, with 4Gb Ram, a Quadro FX 1700M graphics card, and a Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN card. I am currently running 32bit Windows XP on it. I think those are the relevant specs for the things I'm fixing.
So, there are three main issues with the machine.
First, I haven't been able to find any official graphics driver for the machine! On the Dell site there are only drivers for Vista. If I select XP as the OS, I only see drivers for a 770M graphics card.
I got a forceware driver from Nvidia installed, but I get a lot of BSOD right now (sometimes from just resizing a Quicktime window!), so I could really need some help on this. That's the most critical issue .....
It’s that time again for the ATI Catalyst™ driver update!

Official Notes:
This ATI Catalyst™ driver update will unlock new performance improvements on top of the already previewed features in the initial Catalyst™ 10.3 Preview driver we sampled you in February. This driver will be available to download on March 17th from undgerground.amd.com and it will be called "Catalyst 10.3a Preview". On March 24th we will post the official Catalyst™ 10.3 WHQL certified on amd.com. The difference between the two is that Catalyst™ 10.3a Preview will contain future Eyefinty 6 updates and an Alien vs. Predator optimization which the Catalyst™ 10.3 WHQL posting does not have.
Gosh! I am so excited

When I try to official install the IDT audio driver released for my Inspiron 17R SE Windows 8 Pro, it gives an error: "The hardware detected is not supported by this IDT software package" Driver details: Audio - Driver Description Importance Version Released Supported OS Download IDT Audio driver IDT Audio driver A03 Optional 6.10.0.6426 2/8/2013 Windows 7 32-bit Windows 7 64-bit Windows 8 32-bit Windows 8 64-bit [External] I had the same problem with the last release also. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio driver and chipset drivers.
I created this thread with the intention of grouping all who have, or in the process, or are planning to upgrade to Windows 7 x64 for the XPS M1330.
Personally I'm currently on Vista Ultimate x86 (because it's a Product Red) and I'm entitled to a free Windows 7 Professional x64 license from my school. I've read that it's not possible to upgrade directly from higher-to-lower (in terms of level of OS).
Like for mine I'd only be able to upgrade directly if I had a Windows 7 Ultimate license.
Hence for my case, I would like to seek the advice from the helpful fellas here on my upgrade (sequence) options.
Currently I have 2 partitions, as per default. C drive as OS and main partition of 285GB and D drive as RECOVERY of 9.99GB.
Questions: 1) If I were to install Windows 7 on a newly created partition, ie. F drive (as my DVDRW is on E drive now), would I be able to format my C drive (after backing up data from it) and turn it into a storage drive?
2) If 1) is possible, should I partition F drive to 20-25GB as the norm capacity for Windows 7 OS installation, or should I allocate more space? (I'm asking this because I've never done an OS-only partition + Data-only partition in any computer I own because I don't see the usefulness of it LAST TIME.
3) If I had an OS partition in F drive, 20-25GB, and the Data partition on C drive (after formatting Vista), would I be able to swap these 2 drive letters so C drive becomes my Windows 7 OS Drive and F drive becomes my Data drive?
4) If that's the case, would I still be needing D drive (RECOVERY), or can I format->delete it?
5) Having 20-25GB in C drive, assuming I've swapped F drive with C drive, where would I be installing my applications? Do I need to install applications into the OS drive or can I install it in the Data drive? Because if it were the case that applications NEED to be installed into the OS drive, I'd need to allocate a little more space in now-C drive, right?
I've just taken my new precision m4400 out of the box and I've already found 2 majour things wrong with it. I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
FIRST: I'm getting very poor graphics performance. Both observed bad windows refresh times and low OpenGL benchmarks using cinebench 10. I've already run windows update and installed the latest nvidia driver.
Initially I was getting an opengl score of ~1500 on cinebench, now i'm getting ~3500 but it is still too low. It should be over 6000 ....
I have uninstalled Windows 8 and installed Windows 7 64bit Pro on my new Lenovo Ideapad u410. I managed to get all the drivers working... EXCEPT ONE: The WLAN. Â Now here's what I did and what happens every time I try to install the WLAN driver:
I have downloaded the driver "WiFi Link Driver (Intel, CyberTan, Liteon) for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit)" from the page [URL] ... multiple times and tried installing it multiple times. The installation process works until the status "Search the target device in this machine" shows up. As soon as this status shows up, the installation exits without an error message or anything else. How to get it working. I can't even use this machine without WLAN. Â By the way: - LAN works fine - It's not a hardware issue as the WiFi worked fine on the preinstalled Win8 - The WiFi won't even show up under Windows - I have not installed "Intel WiMax Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit)" driver as I am told that this is not used. - Of course I am running the .exe as Administrator - I tried installing Win7 on UEFI before.
the previous m4400 mouse driver wouldnt recognise the middle button....and now the new one dated 4th january wont recognise it either !!! this is getting really annoying...
Just updated my mouse driver with the one released on the 24th, it dosent recognise the middle button. Basically the software has 3 options, right button, both buttons, and left button
this means i couldnt set the middle button to perform a click.
I just received a refurbished M4400 and had no problem changing it to the A03 bios.
When I tried to install the latest Nvidia 179.48 notebook gpu driver (for Windows XP -32 bit), I get the following message...
"The Nvidia setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatable with your current hardware. Setup will now terminate."
Can anyone tell me why this gpu driver will not load? Do I have to do something different in order to get this driver to be accepted by this M770 business gpu?
I'm thinking of updating the graphics driver on my M1530 from Dell's 176.44 version to the latest 185.20 version from Laptopvideo2go.
Wanted to ask a few questions before doing so, mainly: Are there any problems when "waking up" from sleep with these drivers?Anyone got any benchmarks or comments on performance for these drivers? Mainly play COD4, Fallout3, Farcry 2...Notice any difference in temps.? Anyone who has installed them i would appreciate your comments!
Should mention I'm running Vista SP1, 4GB RAM, T7250 and i usually overclock my card to 610/902.
Dell is offering driver version 8.631.0.0000 (A09) for the mobility radeon 4570HD on their site.
I'm currently running modded catalyst 9.9 and the current driver installed is 8.632.1.2000.
Any reason I should use the Dell driver in this case or should I just keep on using the modded AMD one (which will probably be updated on a more regular basis)?
Reformatted drive. Downloaded all necessary drivers from the Dell Website. Reinstalled the following drivers in this order: 1.Notebook System Software 2.Chipset
3.Video Drivers 4.Audio Drivers
5.Quickset 6.Wireless Network Card (Intel R Pro Set)
I am trying to play gears of war and need the forceware 163.44 update. This is getting extremely frustrating. When I try downloading them from the Nvidia website or anywhere else it wont install.
I've been browsing through the Acer website to try and find the forceware updates to no avail
where the hell do you download forceware updates for the 5920G or for acers in general?
Currently using NVidia graphics version 7.15.10.9755 the only one listed on Acers site for the 9300 series running Vista.
While I was playing around with a clean install of Vista on a 9301 Microsoft updates installed (recommended/optional update) a new driver which turned out to be 7.15.11.6369
Anyone know anything about this version. It seemed to work really well, and had many features the earlier one doesn't. Is it a notebook driver ? I also couldn't find it anywhere to download.
I recently bought an HP 15 R006TX. i3 4th gen 4gb,500 gb , 2 gb NVIDIA 820M. installed win 8.  I cant install graphics driver. After checking compatibility, it says " install intel driver first".
When i put a DVD in no picture shows up- there is still audio and i can still click options but i cannot see what i am selecting. I also tried playing a youtube video which showed up as a green screen. Ive looked around and it says i need to update my graphics driver. I already looked on the acer website for a graphics driver download and i cannot find one.
I have a Dell E6400. Â The OS has been uprgraded to Windows 7 - 64 bit by an authorized Microsoft refurbish dealer. Â The driver stops randomly. Using the internet, Office, version 2010. Â is there a better driver?
I have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit version. I have the windows 7 drivers (latest) for this but the windows rating for aero and gaming has gone down, which drivers are recommended for this card (1GB)?
As I had been having a couple of minor problems with a temporary dim screen on startup and occasional screen flicker, I decided to upgrade the NVIDIA display driver on my 5920G.
Unfortunately I rather carelessly installed driver update 180.48 for a 8800 GS rather than the correct 178.24 for the 8600GT on my laptop.
It installed fully and the display still seems to be working OK (but screen flicker still there)
I am wondering whether or not it is OK to leave the 180.48 driver as it is or whether I should roll the driver upgrade back and then install 178.24.
To be honest I find installing drivers quite complicated and difficult so I would prefer to take no action unless the expert advice from members of this forum says it will cause me future problems.
Via MS windows update there is an update to Nvidia Quadro FX 770m graphics. I installed it, however the screen back light brightness got capped and would not go beyond 2 points (out of 5 points) and hence i had to revert back to original drivers.
After updating my ccc to version 14.2 , i get a message saying no amd graphics driver detected and i have to again uninstall the entire AMD CCC using AMD clean up utility to reinstall the amd driver given by HP.The driver provided by HP is very old and doesnt support many new games .  graphic card model: AMD 7670HD pro: i5 2nd gen os:win7 ultimate model pavilion g6 2006tx
I bought a manufacturer refurbished Inspiron 5720, i7 3612QM, 8GB RAM. The BIOS is currently A12. When I received it, it had a bad hard drive. Dell sent me a new hard drive under warranty, but it was blank and I had to use a recover CD to reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I have installed every recommended and updated driver for all of my hardware components. But, everytime I install the HD 4000 drivers, the system starts to freeze up.
The system runs fine with the Standard VGA driver, but I can't run anything that requires better graphics. I have tried installing every version and they all cause the system to freeze. Sometimes it freezes during the boot up and sometimes it will run for up to 2 minutes before freezing. And by freezing, I mean that it just stops working. Sometime if I let it just sit and wait, it will shut off automatically. Other times, it just stays frozen for hours and I have to hold down the Power button to turn it off. When it restarts, it boots to the Safe Mode option screen. I then have to boot to safe mode and restore the system to a previous recovery state.
I'm having trouble finding a video or a graphics driver for a hp pavilion dv8315nr notebook pc The product and model number is EZ580UA#ABA the version of windows in my computer is windows 7, my computer has completed all of its important Windows Updates. I have updated my HP drivers using the hp support system, it is an on-going, or recent issue.
