Dell :: M6400 Component UpgradesOpinions Sought, SSDs

Dec 11, 2008

m6400 with a single 200gb HD which is not really enough space.

At the moment I am trying to decide between doing one of the following

1. Buy 2x320gb 7200 WD drives and raid 0 them up WD 320 : 66.69 * 2 = COST 134 GBP approx Total Space 640 Gb

2. Buy 1 320 hdd and 1 60 gb SSD to boot off SSD : 137.99 + WD 320 : 66.69 = COST 205 GBP Total Space = 380 GB

3. Buy 1 320 hdd and keep the 200 gb drive its coming with
COST 67 GBP - Total Space = 520 GB

I would like it to be quick (obviously)

Does anyone know how a single SSD compares to twin 7200 hdds in raid 0 ? (approx)

The SSD I would probably buy is the OCZ "solid series" (read "budget series") but it still appears to be quick at least according to the OCZ site, I couldnt find any actual reviews of it because I think its too new (its the red coloured one).

Im a little afraid of the risks involved with raid 0 plus the fact that I couldnt just swap out one of the drives without loosing the array.

Maybe a single 7200 is ok. Has anyone any experiance with this SSD?

Also second thing

I am also thinking of buying some more RAM - the 2 brands I am looking at are OCZ and G.Skill

They are both identically priced and the only 2gb dimms for ddr3 that the shop I am looking at stocks.

Dell :: VGA Vs. Component

Jul 13, 2007

I decided that I am going to pass on the HDTV and get a LCD TV. I am going to get the Insignia because I found out my Best Buy discount works again so I can get the proper cables I need and a TV! It was either the Samsung 27" Tube or this 26" Insignia, and its about the same price so I might as well get it!

My question is is that the LCD TV only has 1 HDMI, which I would be using for my Upconvert player. Should I use VGA from the 1710 to the tv--> Does it support HD out?

Dell :: SSDs In XPS M1530

Jan 26, 2009

I recently purchased a brand spanking new, fresh off the press, newborn baby of an XPS M1530 with the 256 GB SSD.

I used the 25% off coupon, so I basically got it for free along with the four year warranty and four year accident protection.

The question I have is: what kind of SSDs are they using? Are the drives Dell uses proprietary as a previous thread asked (which I seriously doubt they are), or are they OCZ, Intel, Toshiba, etc.?

Dell :: Why Are The SSDs So (relatively) Cheap

May 24, 2009

Dell M1730: 320gb 7200rpm to 128gb SSD is $100, and to RAID 256gb ssd (128x128) is $300

HP HDX 18t 320gb 7200rpm to 160 gb SSD + 500gb 5400rpm (who wants that?) is $600.

Sony AW: 320gb 7200rpm to 64gb SSD + 500gb 4200rpm (!) is $420.

Are the SSD's that the Dells use worse quality or something? I really want an SSD with my next laptop, and I'm leaning towards HP or Sony because I think I want an 18.4 inch model, but it really, really surprises me that the Dell SSDs are so much cheaper. Anyone have an explanation, or am I missing something obvious?

Dell :: What Is This Component On My M1730 ?

Apr 19, 2009

when i remove the battery, there is a device that clips into the body and it has a connector on it with very thin wires running to it....

i assume it might be either the wi-fi card, bluetooth, or something else ?

can anyone confirm please ? i unclipped it from the body of the laptop and looked at it but noticed some discoloration on the printed portion of the board that i can see, kind of like it got wet in the past....

Dell :: M1710 Component Output

Jul 10, 2007

To preface this post I am in no way new to HDTV or computers for that matter, but I wanted to get some facts straight.

I am moving into a house at school and wanted to get a decent TV. I am getting a 27" Tube HDTV.

I am moving in a fraternity house so an LCD or plasma isn't something I want to invest in just yet. So please don't recommend one of those. I am planning on hooking up my 1710 to the TV and wanted to know how the Component Video Output looks on it, to make sure its true 720p/1080i or if they are just sending a 480p signal out of it. I am assuming it will be HD but I wanted to also get some first hand responses from anyone that may have used this output on a tube HDTV. I know a standard tube will look like garbage but I am hoping a HD tube might perform better. I MAY use DVI to HDMI, but with my room configuration I have to get a 12' cable so DVI to HDMI in that length might be too pricey right now.

Dell :: Component On The Inspiron 1720

Jul 16, 2007

anyone run a benchmark utility such as Lavalys Everest or Sisoft Sandra or similar to tell me the name of the manufacturer of the Firewire chipset in the Inspiron 1720 please? Not the motherboard or CPU chipset, just the firewire component of the laptop, please.

The benchmark software is free, and they tell you what components are inside your particular computer.

Reason I'm asking is that I have an external firewire soundcard (for professional music recording), and for maximum compatibility the soundcard manufacturer recommends the soundcard only be used with certain firewire chipsets.

HP/Compaq :: Video Out From VGA To Component

Apr 29, 2009

i wanted to output the dv5 1009tx to a crt

i bought a vga to 3x RCA (component cable) now thing is it does not output video to a CRT tv

now i know you guys might say use the HDMI , but well i cannot afford an LCD currently or in the near future, and yes the tv isn't any larger stands at 20 or so inches (sanyo)...flat (or as near as flat can be...)

i am using the latest NVIDIA drivers from their website,....i have previously in the past been able to setup dual/clone displays with NVIDIA cards....(using DVI/VGA desktops) but apparently this does not work, the Display driver picks up the TV but sadly no display

i have tried

No interlace (on laptop and tv)
reduced Reso to 10x7
flicker at 60Hz

the tv shows a bluescreen and it flickers....but no image of the desktop

my qs to you all is.......do i need any specific cable (as this one states it is a DVD player to projector...but shouldn't it work anyways?) any other settings i may have missed

(my duty roster would not allow me to get to this shop for another week+) i do not have VGA to RCA or svideo

HP/Compaq :: XB3000 To TV Using Component

Jun 14, 2009

my HP tx1000 has just become my second, rather than my primary computer, and I'm looking to finally use it as a media center PC with the XB 3000 docking station I bought with it.

The XB 3000 has some nice component jacks, so I presume I want to use those. But it doesn't seem to have speaker outputs, just SPDIF and a Headphone jack. I presume I want to get a cable that will go from the headphone jack to the stereo inputs on the TV?

Sony :: ExpressCard SSDs For New Vaio Z

Apr 28, 2010

As a proud Vaio Z owner (and at the same time a poorly payed PhD student), I opted for the cheap Z with the 128GB SSD and I am already almost at full capacity.

I am looking for someway to expand my available storage. SD cards would be one option but high capacity ones are expensive, read/write speeds are not that good and I have had reliability issues with most removable media I've used in the past so I would not want to put my work-critical files on them.

I have come across these expressCard based SSD drives:

Amazon.com: Wintec FileMate 48GB Ultra ExpressCard Solid State Drive 3FMS4D48M-WR - PCI-e, Mini USB 2.0: Electronics

that seem to provide relatively good performance. However they seem a bit unreliable from the reviews, so I am still not particularly keen on getting one.

Has anyone come across any viable alternatives to the above drives?

Dell :: How To Output 1080i To External TV Via Component Cable From Inspiron E1705

Sep 20, 2007

I have Inspiron E1705 with WUXGA (1920x1200) which I want to connect to my rear-projection TV that has only component video inputs.

I've bought this S-Video to Component adapter:
[url]

But when I switch to external monitor (TV) via Fn-F8, the screen switches to 1024x768 (TV starts showing in that resolution too), and there is no way I can raise the resolution.

But I really want HD 1080i !

I know my TV can support it, as I can switch my XBMC to 1080i and TV switches to it.

I tried to play with PowerStrip options, without much luck.

Is there any way to achieve my goal?

I have Windows XP Professional SP2.

Acer :: EDSLoader.exe Unable To Locate Component

Feb 7, 2009

I am a "silver surfer" with limited computer knowledge and would greatly appreciate help with a problem which has recently occurred with my Acer Aspire 5920G laptop which is running Vista SP1.

All of a sudden and for no apparent reason, when I switch on I get a message " eDSLoader.exe Unable to Locate Component. This application has failed to start because ADMIN_CLASS_LIB.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

This is followed by a Windows Message which says "eData Security System Loader (Load and prepare environment) has stopped working" and I get the 2 usual Windows alternatives.

Looking in Google, I see an article which says this problem is not serious. It says the eDSLoader program relates to data encryption and is not normally used. The solution recommended by the article is to use msConfig and disable the program from running at start up.

Before doing this, I would like to double-check with knowledgeable members of this forum.

Is disabling the program from running at start-up really the best solution ?

Or should I try to re-install the program in question ? If re-installing is the best option, do I uninstall in the normal way and where do I find a new version of the program to re-install?

Acer :: Aspire 5600 Series, Unknown Motherboard Component

Feb 21, 2008

I'm looking at the motherboard on my Aspire 5601AWLMi (mobo id "31zb2mb0091" ) and I see there's four places where can insert cards. Two are the RAM chips, those are labeled DDR RVS 1.8V with "tyco" written on the other side of the plastic bracket, there's wireless card slot not really labeled with anything conclusive over near the Lan and Phone port, and then there's another slot labeled "0624n3" on the left side of the plastic bracket and "-+AMP" on the other side of it. I have absolutely NO idea what that last slot is for, and I'd like to know, if anyone can figure it out.

To describe it, pin wise starting from the left it has 1 pin, a divider, then 61 pins in a row. I think it's 61. I'm not willing to recount :P
It's physically shorter than a ram chip, but not by much more than 3/4cm is my guess.

You can see the slot itself in this picture:
[rl]
The slot is sitting just above that big red..knob..thing.

Also, I found this page, but it didn't tell me anything useful, I think. The mobo is flipped over in the diagrams..

Dell :: My M6400

Oct 23, 2008

my M6400 is here - just wanted to post some first impressions.

X9100 - 3.06ghz
4GB DDR3
Quadro 3700M
1440x900 WXGA+
Wireless 5300
Bluetooth 370
DVD+RW slot load
Silver Color
Backlit keyboard
Webcam
2x 80GB 5400rpm drives

2 Intel X25-M 80GB SSD drives will be replacing those 80GB's.

First - my first thoughts are that this system is Fantastic!

The screen is great - its an LG, fantastic colors, no dead pixels. Typical viewing angles for non LED screen, not great, but not noticeably bad either.

No noticeable bleeding, no graininess - very happy with the screen.

Ran 3Dmark 06 (1280x800, stock drivers) - 11,619

GPU temp was around 80 C - not bad at all.

So far, very happy. Putting the SSD ddrives in now - will post more thoughts as I do more. Will post pics ASAP.

Update 1: 2 80GB SSDs are in place - this has Intel's Matrix Storage which allows the creation of one RAID1 volume (which I will use for valuable data) and a RAID0 volume for the rest of the space - this is very nice - get the benefits of both types of RAID in one system!

Update 2: The power brick is completely absurd. Its HUGE - 210W. The good news is that I plugged in a 130W from a M4400 and although I get the popup about the AC adapter not being at least 150W, it does charge the battery and allow the system to run. To me, this is an acceptable alternative to lugging around the giant brick, at least for most things on the road - Later on, I will test the system with this adapter and see what kind of slowdown is caused.

Pics:

RAID Setup:

Next to a M4400 (that I believe I'll be returning very shortly):

Next to an older E1705 - these are virtually the exact same size - its astounding what new tech can cram into the same space

Dell :: Dead M6400

May 27, 2009

Whilst working away at my desk, M6400 docked it just powered down.

Pressing the power button causes it (the power button) to light briefly and then go out. Pressing FN+Power (as requested by Dell Tech) does nothing at all.

I've tried it with another PSU (I got 2, one with M6400, other with docking station) - and if you plug the PSU in, and then hit power on the laptop - the blue light on the PSU goes out - and doesn't come back on till the power is cycled. The M6400 does nothing during all of this.

The PSUs work just fine with my D820.

Dell techs are coming tomorrow to fix it. I'll let you know what they say!
