Dell :: Network Card Fried
Aug 5, 2009
Well, as many of you may have seen on the news (in the US anyway), Louisville, Kentucky was hit by some massive storms on August 4th.
I was unlucky enough to be on the campus at the University of Louisville, where I live in a dorm. During the rain and thunder, I was surfing the web and watching a little TV to pass the time due to canceled classes.
All of a sudden there was a bright flash, and a loud crack and boom. I had later been informed that the building was hit by that particular bolt of lightning.
At the same time as the flash, my laptop completely froze, forcing me to hard reboot. Nothing else in the room was affected. Lights didn't flicker once, TV never skipped a beat. My electronics are all plugged into a quality surge protector; this and the fact that we still had power and cable, I knew there wasn't a power surge.
However, the internet was knocked out for the whole building. Come to find out today, my laptop no longer recognizes when an ethernet cable is plugged into the port, thus preventing me from connecting to any LAN; home, on campus or otherwise.
QUESTION
This leads me to the question: Is it possible for there to be an electrical surge carried over an ethernet cable that is strong enough to fry/disable an internal network card?
In case you're wondering, I'm currently connected via wireless. Specs are in my sig (Dell E4300).

I've been having a problem with my xps gen 2 laptop lately. I was using it the other day and closed the lid and let the system hibernate while I was at work, when I opened it up again it looked like the video card was artifacting. (It has a 6800 ultra in it) I don't use the system to game anymore, its just my daily laptop and it doesn't do alot of video intensive tasks. I ran dell diagnostics and it said it was experiencing errors writing to memory. Every once and a while I can start the system and there is no artifacting. I'm pretty sure the video card is fried because it artifacts while posting, and on the external screen I tried as well. I pulled apart the system to clean it (it wasn't to dusty, I blow it out with compressed air a couple of times a month).
Also I removed the graphics chip and reseated it just to make sure it hadn't come loose or anything. I just want to be sure before I spend the money to replace the graphics chip. I'm probably going to replace it with an x600 since most of the things I do aren't graphics intense and I plan to get a new laptop some time next year.

I know the DV9000 has problems. I've had the laptop for 3.5yrs and at the end of last yr it died on me. I tried to find out the problem and eventually figured it was the overheating and badly manufactured design as so many other people with this laptop found. Even took it in for a fault assessment and they told me that the integrated graphics card was probably fried.
Thing is, the other day I bought a screwdriver set and decided to open up the laptop and take a look around and boot it up again and now I'm having second thoughts.
Firstly, if it was the graphic card that was fried, surely the hdd would still boot into windows? When I turn on the laptop, the screen goes grey / lights up (as it normally did when the laptop was working) but nothing much happens after that. I dont hear the hdd booting up and nothing really happens. All I hear is the fan working and eventually after 20min of nothing happening I just pulled the power cable out.
So I tried taking out the hdd and booting up. Nothing comes up on the display and nothing happens. Even if the hdd is out, should any sort of display come up? like surely the BIOS or even a screen saying "no hdd detected" should come up?
If it is the graphics card that is fried, does that mean that if I plug a secondary monitor into the monitor port on the laptop, it shouldnt display anything should it? or does the extra monitor port on the laptop run through a different circuit system than the main LCD screen on the laptop?

I was able to resurrect it several times. Don't know how but it would work for a while then crash again. The card was a 9600M GS DDR2 and the laptop model was an Acer Aspire 6930G. Judging by the picture below of my start up screen. Would you say it's directly related to the video card? The windows noise would play with that screen but recently, it doesn't even play the noise anymore.

I've been using my laptop daily with its ethernet port for my internet connection. A few times a week I'll use the wireless connection, which is easy enough to switch on and off.
Today when I got back to my desk and plugged in my ethernet cable, nothing happened. No orange/green flashing lights, nothing.
Wireless still works fine, but I can't get a byte of internet out of the wired LAN connection. The device manager says it's a Marvell Yukon 88e8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller.
Pinging loopback (127.0.0.1) works just fine and the device manager says that it's working properly

I was wondering if any of you knew if it was possible to change the stock dell 1515 wireless card with a real card like intel's 5300 ? (the same one you can find in the 1640)
I'm asking because i want to install linux on my lappy and besides having crappy performance, those dell cards are not really compatible with linux.

I have an Acer Aspire 4720z that keeps dropping the internet signal. I know it's not my router, because my wife's HP keeps on plugging.
While the connection is working, I show two wireless cards in my device manager:
1. Atheros AR5007EG
2. Broadcom NetLink Gigabit adapter
About once every 30 minutes to one hour, my connection will just die cold turkey, and checking the device manager shows that the Atheros card has just "disappeared".
I tried installing drivers for it again, but it just tells me that no such device exists.
The only thing that works is to reboot completely. Then it works for about another 10-30 minutes and the process starts again.

My dv2000t came with Vista installed but Vista is now broken and gone and I want to install WinXP instead. I installed XP but XP cant find any network adapter on the laptop. I have an ethernet cable plugged in to the laptop. Prior to this there was no problem connecting to the internet with this machine. Win XP can't find the network adapter therefore I can't use the internet at all. Since this dv2000t came with Vista installed maybe the network adapter requires something not available in XP therefore you can only use it with Vista loaded.
why XP can't find any network adapter on this dv2000t?

a problem im having with my Acer 6920G, basically the network card is an Atheros AR2181, and ive been having problems with it since day 1.
Basically the drivers it came with (1.0.0.28) would cause my internet connection to "suffer" limited connectivity every 5 minutes or so which would srop download speeds to around 1 kb/s. I thought i should upgrade drivers to the latest which are the 1.0.0.38/9 drivers, i thought i had fixed the problem as for the first 10 minutes or so it was working fine, and then suddenly my pc froze and the screen went funny with lines running across the whole thing, as if it was an overheating issue.
To solve this i bought a USB network card, which works fine but takes up a USB slot and gives me slow download speed of around 20 - 100 kb/s compared to over 10 Mb/s in some cases with the Atheros.

Recently bought a Acer Aspire Nitro v15 with windows 8.1 with a qualcomm atheros ar5bwb222 wireless network card. The connection is really unstable and often disconnects and have very few bars. This is not from the router since the connection on my phone and other computers are fine. The connection (when i have it) is also really slow compared to when i use my phone on the same network. I tried updating the drivers but it says my latest drivers are installed. Could this be a Windows 8.1 problem? this is my first time owning a windows 8.1 computer.

i sent my XPS Gen 2 in for the vertical line issue, got it back and loaded up CS:S... after 5 minutes of gaming my comp locks up .. reboot and get nothing on my screen , hook to an external monitor and get blue artifacts every ware.. so yea after calling tech support they conclude its the GPU that was fried and that dell is at fault... my comp is out of warrantee but dell is owning up to it... so my question here is.. what will i get back? i heard they ran out of 6800 ultras a long time ago, and recently are out of 7800 GTXs.... seeing how thats the only two that are of equal to or greater value that will fit in my system.. do you think they will sub me out for a 1710?

I think my xps9300gen2 might have some major promblems.
My battery went bad........got the bad battery flash code and the battery lights on back would light up funky.
I bought a new battery and the light isn't flashing anymore, system recognizes and charges it, BUT when I unplug the AC power to run on battery I get artifacts then system freeezes. I tried a third battery but it's the same deal. Won't run on the batteries
I fear it's the mobo.
Anyone delt with something like this?

I've had a Dell Latitude D600 for about a year now, but its been in my car for a few months, up until a week ago.
I just couldn't do anything with it because I was so busy, and didn't have anywhere to go that I could connect to Wi-Fi. So I finally got it out of my car and started tinkering with it (reinstalling MicroXP and Ubuntu 9.04).
I messed around with it for a whole week and didn't have any problems. Tonight, while I was watching the Alabama/VA Tech game (go bama) at my brother's house, I was on my laptop, and the battery was getting low.
I didn't want to plug in my power brick to charge it up, because the plug was behind the couch, and my sister in law's cord was already plugged in, so I figured I'd just use it (hers is a newer latitude .....

I spilled coke all over my M1710 and it will no longer turn on. I called and they are making me ship it out to them (I have complete care) so they can look at it.
Will they repair my unit? Or will I end up with a M1730? If they do give me a 1730, will I end up with a single 8700M GT seeing how my 1710 only had a 7900GS? Is this a downgrade or upgrade?

It was probably the heat, but during some intensive video editing my M1330 shut off in an instant and would not turn on, battery nor a/c.
When I plugged the adapter into the laptop, the light on the adapter went off.
The tech came and replaced the MD (second time, first was Oct.2008).
The tech said if it happens again, I could request an additional/upgrade heat-sink/fan, not really sure.

Well i was at school today using my E6400 at the school lounge. I had it on for about 2 hrs or so and all of a sudden there was a burning smell coming out of the motherboard and the computer just shut off on me. I was unable to turn it back on. So i called up Dell tech support. We went through some steps to try and recover the issue but was unsuccessful. So the tech decided to do a system Exchange due to the fact it could be a fire hazard. I should be receiving the new E6400 in about 5 days. Specs are identical or could be higher.

my dv6000 has a common problem, it just wont turn on anymore, it's starts up and shuts down with in 5 seconds and repeats until i turn it off - i'm gonna either strip it for parts or sell it as seen for spares/repair.
Two questions if you'll indulge me - is this the motherboard that's gone? Most pages online suggest this and getting a new motherboard is expensive and likely to go again i think. Secondly do you guys know where the bext place for new to try and sell it for spares is and what could i possibly expect from it with a bad mb?

I get the 'Limited Connectivity' message in Vista 64. It seems to happen for larger files transfers only.

My Dell 1505 wireless N card is a constant headache, If I hide my ssid the card detects and connects to my router but I can never access the internet. It may work sometimes but most of the time my SSID has to be on.
I have tested this with two different routers and the results were the same, vista shows local access only
.
I have tried using drivers from laptopvideo2go and reimaging the computer, I am now fed up and want to get a new wifi car

Just swapped out my e6400 with the nVidia 160M GC fro a 6400 with the Intel card (due to heat issues).
I tried just swapping the hard drives so that I wouldnt have to reinstall the OS.
Its not letting me start Windows.
I think the issue is that I dont have the drivers on my older HD for the new motherboard/GC.

I have a brand new M4400, running W7pro x64. The M4400 came with an internal SD card reader. Now this card reader cannot read some standard SD cards (other work fine). Especially,
I have a Transcend SD 4GB 133x (http://www.bestpriceaudiovideo.com/i...ard-detail.jpg) that is problematic.
When I put the card in the reader, W7 tells me to format the card. This I do not want to do, of course. If I open Disk Management, it takes ages to open, and eventually shows the card as "Unallocated".

I've been having problems with my video card. (M1710 with a 7950GTX card). The card was overheating and even after applying AS5 and cleaning the vents it was reaching around 100c in games. After about a year, i started to also get memory parity errors...
Long story short, i contacted dell and they mailed me a new mb and a new video card.
I just got it now, and i am going to open the rig and replace the video card.. I am just not sure about the mother board, should i replace it as well ?
The parts that dell sent are refurbished parts, and as i know that my m.board is working i am not sure whether i should replace it or not.
