I own a m1330 with an 8400M GS. I've heard a alot about the defective GPU with all the vertical lines and crashed and whatnot. I've had my fair share of BSOD too.
I've also heard that this problem only affect those laptops shipped to the states, and I'm from Singapore, so am I spared from this nightmare?
I just recently ordered a Dell Studio XPS 1640 and the weather, like the rest of the US nation, is HOT! Stupid question, but is a BIG concern to me, when the laptop is on the delivery truck with FedEx and the truck is out and about, will the high 90's to almost 103 degress cause the laptop (components, display, etc...) to become more prone to being defective than if it was in the delivery truck in 70's degree weather?
Can the restore/media discs warp in this weather even though it is in the box packaging?
it's just I usually return stuff I order if it is delivered hot because I tend to think it wont work, I have bad OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).
I just recently placed an order for a Studio 1737 (replacing an Inspiron E1705). It comes with a 1 year warranty.
I'm debating whether it's worth spending $200+ to upgrade to a Dell 3 year warranty or should I get a 3 year Square Trade Warranty for less than $150 (I can get one for around $120 after a coupon)?
Is there a way to overclock the CPU in my Vostro??? If so, what programs should I use to do this.

I'm getting my E1705 back from repair tomorrow and I'm going to push the thing to it's limits. I used to frequent these forums before they were redesigned, and it seems my old user name is gone as well -- so I get to start back over.
Using I8kfangui, and a PA-13 or a PA-15 -- whats the easiest way to push the laptop to it's "safest" limits.
I noticed the "new" JuanLu bios lets you overclock via software now which is nice. Depending on my bios revision once I can check again, which should I pick? I hear of some folks using the GTX bios on the GS, but like I said -- I'm so out of the loop now that it's not funny.
I'll probably look into dropping a FX2500 in there at some point in the near future, is there a guide to hardmodding the E1705 like this?
Anyhow, if some veterans will chime in and give this newb all over again some guidance to do this right, let me know.
I will overclock my 7900GS, what i the best clock for my 7900gs( i had already flash my bios for the 7900, but i dont know witch max clock can i take)-- i will play Crysis, this lags!
View 15 Replies View RelatedI've had my E1705 for 4 months now, and I have unlocked my bios so that I can overclock my videocard. Now I want to see if I can overclock my CPU. It's a T7200, but unfortuanlly I can't find a thread on that any where.
View 11 Replies View Relatedi'm an owner of a m90, which i recently received from dell in substituion of an e1705.
Talking with abo, the developer of setFSB, it seems the m90 mounts a Cypress clock generator. There are real possibilities he can develop a version of setfsb that can interact with our notebook. The only thing we need now is the pll number (something like
cyxxxxx).
It's written on a chip on the motherboard. If someone can help me finding it, we will probably enjoy a new crysis experience
I have a e1705 Geforce go 7900gs oc'd to 450/600. Also I have the power supply that is included with the laptop 90watts. I have seen people here in forums that o'cd there card up to 600 core or more. I flashed my rom using the 375/507 to unlock my bios and then i use rivatuner to overclock my video card coz I want to know the limit of my card. And it reached 455/600 so i underclock it to 450 just for safe distance.
Now, I am using ntune to o'c my card and there is no testing whether it will work with the core I specified so I assume again that its 450/600.
My questions will be,
1. What is the max core/mem overclock that is safe for my 90 watts power supply w/o increasing the voltage to 1.24volts?
2. I create a profile in ntune that I enable the overclock (450/600) everytime I will play 3d games and I get it back (370/507) . Is that ok? Will it harm my videocard?
I got a rev 1 card. I am using a windows vista w/ dell performance driver, 2gb ram and 1.73ghz core duo cpu. Weird I got 152 increase in score in 2005 3dmark when using vista to xp . My score is 7196. And also I don't want to use nibitor to o'cd my card .
1. If I overclock my GPU's does that void my complete care warranty?
2. How can I overclock the 2nd GPU with RivaTuner?
3. How hard can I push the 8700's?
Can it be done? I have never dared to overclock a laptop due to them being so hot in the first place but i was wondering if anyone has tried on this laptop yet?

Couple things
Bought from Dell 3+ years ago
Just installed a new hard drive with Vista Ultimate
Core Duo @ 1.88
Running @ 1.00
Original Ram: 1000
Just installed: 4000, rated at 3320
Intergrated 945G GPU:
Maximum allowed memory is 240
Current memory is 42ish, never changes .....
Im trying to overlock my 9400mg a little bit as well as my processor p8600 2.4ghz core 2 duo with Nvidia performance tools (ntune).
Stock GPU clock: 450/1075/1100
overclocked GPU: 500/1075/1200
CPU stock FSB clock: 267 (2.4ghz)
Overclocked CPU clock: 301 (2.7ghz)
Now I noticed an option on motherboard tab "PCIe slot 1: 2500mhz"
should I increase the PCIe clock? to about 2700mhz just like the processor, or how much should I move it, or do I even need to move it? Is there any benefit of playing with pcie clock, or what does it effect in the system in terms of hardware?
Love this site, I'm glad I registered. I've been using the website for a couple of months but haven't had to post because it's been able to answer all my questions through searching.
I've recently undervolted using the guide here to get my temps down and managed to get it to 1.025 volts with a drop of about 12* on average.
I need to go out and get some new thermal past because lets face it... It's dell and it should just be assumed that after you've had it for a couple of months you have to replace the generic thermal past .....
I just sold out my three week old macbook pro 15 unibody on ebay....useless filthy piece of crap...utterly over-priced block of aluminium.
And now I am typing this on my DELL studio xps 1640 .I have a simple question, Will it be extremely risky if I try to overclock my gpu, ati mobility radeon hd3670 512mb gdrr3? Also, I am a gamer, but not one of those
who faints if the fps drops by a point. I mostly play games like gta san andreas, cod4, world of warcraft, fear, soldier of fortune, assassin's creed, prince of persia, diablo, half-life, far cry , mafia, nfs etc. Is it necessary to overclock?
You can see the processor I have in my Signature, Core 2 Extreme X9000.
Basically, I've never dabbled in overclocking before. However I have been running a lot of CPU intensive programs recently, and decided it might be time to try and overclock the CPU. I have a few queries though.
1: Is it normal for the fans to be on full blast when overclocked? I put it up to 3.4GHz, and as soon as I started my computer it sounds like it's going to take off...
2: Will this void my warranty? In the BIOS Dell says it can cause problems and run down the life quickly - However it doesn't say it'll void the warranty. Confirmation anyone?
3: In reference to question 1, if @ 3.4GHz it will continue to sound like a jumbo jet, what speed/s can I go to without it maxing out the fan?
4: My temperature for my CPU is currently jumping from between 48 and 61 degrees quite rapidly. Is this normal when overclocked?
I would like to understand how to use this with my ATI 4650 HD Mobility Radeon Card,
but it says it's not supported, something about an unsigned driver during install "rivatuner.sys"
I would like to bump my Freq up on the GPU a bit and lock it down. But I am very confused by the instructions and what to do.
I bought my 1735 about a year ago, and since I skimped a bit on the order, I'm wondering about buying some upgrades and/or overclocking.
I currently have a 1735 with C2D T5750 at stock clock speed, 4GB of PC2-5300 RAM, 2 hard drives and the Radeon 3650.
Is it worth it to buy a better processor? I can't find many places that sell them (just Newegg and NCIX), and $250 seems a bit steep for a P8600.
Is the P8600 even compatible with my 1735's PM965 chipset? I'm getting conflicting reports of 1066 FSB CPUs being compatible with my laptop.
The T9300 CPU will be compatible for sure, but I can't really find a (reputable) vendor.

This notebook has been out for a while, and I’m sure the stuff I want to do now have already been done. So…I’m hoping for some good answers, so I can pursue the things I want to do with my old trusty. Considering I don’t have any other CPU right now, please leave out the pin mod option at this time. I’m trying to work with what I have right now,
First I would like to “Overclock” the CPU (Pentium M 740), so let me know when, what, where and which programs you’ve used to overclock this particular model. Will do the overclocking first, to see if I want to shell out something on a Pentium M 770
Now that the most important part of what I want to do is out of the way; would an x1800 work in my notebook?
Yeah Yeah... I still have a 3650 DDR2
I am looking to upgrade my laptop very soon....
Back to the question in hand....
I want to overclock my 3650, but with the latest drivers (and after the 8.10 Drivers I have not been able to overclock) ...
Was just wondering if there any any new methods in order to overclock my card...
Is it possible? I have tried nearly everything and nothing supports this card! I want to run fallout with decent frame rates, and it just isn't possible without overclocking. I am using windows 7 RC 32 bit.
