Dell :: Overclocking And Locking Using Riva Tuner
Mar 14, 2010
I would like to understand how to use this with my ATI 4650 HD Mobility Radeon Card,
but it says it's not supported, something about an unsigned driver during install "rivatuner.sys"
I would like to bump my Freq up on the GPU a bit and lock it down. But I am very confused by the instructions and what to do.

Does anyone have a solution or have an idea why my e6400 pointer locks up intermittently? Sometimes it locks for about 1 minute. Other times I have to reboot.

It boots up ok in to Windows XP, will run for a couple of minutes ie. find a wireless network, start up IE and then it will freeze. The weird thing is that the mouse cursor still moves.
CTRL + ALT + DEL has no affect ......

I just purchased an e4300 last week. Whenever I try to stream hulu, or sometimes vids from youtube the computer locks up. It is really starting to get frustrating. I seem to have the latency issue in check. I read in a thread to download intels matrix storage manager, and that helped. I have also disabled the esata ports and LAN. I am running vista buisness x86 sp1. I am just using the drivers that came on the install cd. I am hoping that someone can help me out, because if I cant get this fixed I might just return it. I really like this computer and dont want to have to do that.

I have a laptop that has a processor microcode update failure message on startup.
It would boot fine after I pressed F1 but last week I tried reinstalling Windows and the after the computer restarts, it locks up when it gets to the windows logo and scrolling bar (before the Windows classic screen where you put in the name, date, time, etc.).
Ive tried using 2 different Dell reinstallation discs and a Windows disc but it always happens in the same place.
I checked for a BIOS update but there was never a newer revision for it...A38 or A39.
What could be wrong? I don't have a Dell resource CD to run diagnostics.

I have a Precision M4800 that has its USB ports stop working in two cases so far. First, if I use the card reader at all, it works to access files, but then when I try to eject the card, it shows neither an error nor the "safe to remove" message. the card stays in the list of drives even after it's unplugged. If another USB drive is plugged in after this, it isn't recognized.
The second case is after using an external USB 3.0 drive for a while, it can stop working. The drive shows up in the list of drives, but all the directories appear empty. Unplugging doesn't remove the drive, and new drives aren't recognized. Once this happens, shutting down the machine crashes after a few minutes with DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE in either USBSTOR.sys or O2FJ2w7x64.sys. Could this be a hardware problem? It seems like the USB controller is locking up and the other drivers are getting blamed.

the laptop will boot up then freeze/lock up when all my desktop icons and windows bar at the bottom load up. The mouse won't move, the keyboard won't work. I've been told it may be either the RAM or hard drive, maybe even the battery. I haven't brought it to a professional yet because I'm dreading paying a ton of money for a cheap laptop.

i did a reformat but during it, it froze up and i had to force a shut down. when i turned it back on it continued from the same place and finished fine it seemed. but then it kept freezing up every 20minutes or so, or when it seemed like the processor couldnt handle what was going in. i started to think maybe it was overheating so i set it to adaptive and put the fan speed on level 5. it still freezes up but it takes longer to do so. its really annoying. i tried reinstalling all the drivers and everything and it kinda fixed it but it still freezes up. anyone know whats wrong? im ready to just smash this thing because ive been having important things to do and it keeps doing this crap.

After a few days of happy 1810T ownership, the computer has begun to have a problem where the screen locks up tight. Nothing revives the computer except holding the power button down to force a powerdown. It reboots OK but shows the screen to optionally boot into Safe Mode.
The screen is a random color when this happens: sometimes green, blue or red. It is NOT the traditional "blue screen of death".
At first I thought it was due to some problems I was having with a conflict between The KM Player and Adobe Flash (as detailed here and here, for example). Luckily I had done Acronis 2010 images at each step of the way in the "new notebook" process:
- image made right out of the box by booting from Acronis disc first, before ever running Win7 on the computer (I call this the "Day 0 Image")
- image made after doing Windows Updates, Windows Security Essentials, installing apps (KM Player, IrfanView, FireFox, etc) and user data
Thinking the problem was due to the KM Player conflicts, I restored the computer back to when there was no KM Player, i.e. out-of-the-box Day 0 Image. This went fine and Acronis worked smoothly.
I did the Windows Updates but did not install any apps or user data... and the screen lockup still happens! Sometimes it happens soon after login, other times things run OK for a while first.
I am really concerned about this. If I can't rely on the computer to not lock up regularly, it is essentially useless to me. I am very surprised to see the problem even after an "out of the box" disk restore.
Any suggestions? Even if you don't have knowledge of how to deal with this problem specifically, do you know where else I can ask? What will Acer's take on this be? I am afraid they will just pass it off as "user error" and leave me stuck...
To Add:
1) I can't remember if this has happened only when on battery, or also when plugged in. I will check and see if it happens in both modes. If it only happens when on battery, at least that shows a path forward.
2) I have not tried to restore via the Acer eRecovery DVDs yet, though I don't know why this would be any better than the Acronis 2010 Day 0 image. I was in the process of burning the first Acer recovery DVD last night when... the screen locked up!
3) I have emailed Acer Support about the problem, though I suspect they won't trust Acronis 2010 and they'll tell me to restore via Acer eRecovery DVD...

I have a Presario 2195U and it locks all the time. At first it seemed to do it at random, but then I noticed it would lock every time during installation of XP Service Pack 3, or other long laborious installations. Any time you hear the fan kick into overdrive it seems that it will lock up shortly after. It locked several times during the installation of Windows XP itself.
I hear the fan spinning, and I keep the system on a hard, flat surface to maximize airflow, but it will still lock up during larger-scale installations.
I ask if the issue could possibly stem from over-heating; the system reaches a certain temperature and locks as a fail-safe. I've also noticed that it will lock less frequently when the battery is removed. When I remove it, the battery is very warm, Perhaps the battery is absorbing some of the heat being produced in the system, contributing to the overall temperature inside the chassis?
I have since installed Ubuntu Linux on it and it locks MUCH less frequently, and from what I understand, Linux is much less CPU-intensive. I do like Linux, but it isn't suitable for what I use the system for.
If over-heating could be the issue, I'd like to purchase a better/more powerful fan, power draw isn't so much an issue as it's almost always plugged in.
The specifications for the system are:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1.8ghz
Memory: 1gb SDRAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon Mobile
HDD: 120gb
OS: Ubuntu 8.10
If the problem is indeed thermal-related, then comes the question of how do I open the chassis...

I'm in college right now and one day I lowered my screen as to not to tmpt my roommate into looking at my windows and stuff. I went to take a shower, came back, and my screen was in a viewing position. The only reason i didn't close it was because I have some stuff I'd like to get continuous updates on on my computer. I was wondering if there was a way to basically lock the computer, without really shutting it off or preventing it from doing it's thing as it does normally. I'd like to be able to unlock it with a fingerprint scan. My laptop is an HP HDX16T.
Remember i don't want to put it to sleep or anything, just to lock it to prevent anyone from actually using it, like locks the mouse, the keyboard and stuff.

I have several of these machines (Windows XP SP3) all doing the same thing, will hang at the Windows XP screen. When the user is finally able to log in, maybe after 5 or 6 attempts they will have no network connection.
I have the latest BIOS and network card drivers loaded.

i have noticed that the right side of the chassis seems to be absent of the antenna outlet. has this feature been removed?? because i had really been looking to make use of it...

If I chose not to get the tuner card in the system when I customise it, does it not have the ugly rubber port on the left hand side? Now that they have started charging for the tuner I think it's better off me just getting a usb tuner because then it frees up slots inside and I can take it out whenever I want and use it on any computer.

I've got a brand new Yoga 3 Pro with the 256GB Liteon SSD. Every 20-90 minutes, it freezes up for up to a minute at a time. If I keep the task manager opened up and check it, I can see disk usage at 100%. System process is usually up at the top, but looks like it's only writing maybe 1MB/s, so it's not like it's at capacity.

I've updated the Intel Chipset to the latest drivers. Intel's RST tool seems to think everything is ok.

I purchased a Studio 1747 from Dell online. On the left side, I have a tv tuner port.
I have tried hooking up an antenna but Windows Media Center does not detect a tv tuner on this laptop.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? or did dell not install the tuner? or is it a dummy port?

My HP Envy 15-3040nr has an Intel i7-2670QM processor, which works with Turbo Boost just fine. My laptop goes to a maximum of 3.0 GHz when under full load (I render heavy gameplay videos), and underclocks just fine when in energy saver mode.
Â
However, I want to know if it is possible to LOCK the processor's clock rate at a consistently high rate, say, something like 2.9 (or an unrealistic 3.1 GHz, the rated turbo high) GHz, assuming that heat is not an issue (yes, it obviously will be an issue, but let's just say it isn't).

Anyways with the new digital over the air tv signal, I heard its very clear quality and was wondering, is there a good expresscard that does the job well for tv over the air? Bonus points if the AV is in sync for game systems.

So i did a little searching about TV Tuners, but i'm still a little bewildered on the topic. I basically need someone to clear up some questions I have about TV tuners. Here are a few questions:
What channels do the "antennas" that come with some tuners pick up? The same as good ol fashion bunny ears would?
If I just had a coaxial cable coming from the wall or cable box (and a functioning cable outlet) could i just connect that to the tv tuner (with the right converter) and get the basic cable channels that you would if you connected that coaxial cable straight to a tv?

If/when this option is available in the US, aren't chances high that the component will overheat/burn-out over time?
The reason I ask is that almost all "usb stick" tuners have heat issues and develop issues over time.
Is it clear yet whether the proposed tuner will be integrated chip (soldered) or socketed somehow and replaceable?

I didn't order mine from HP , but I'm thinking of install one. Is the internal tuner more convenient? I have read some promising review about aftermarket tuners.
Also the point where the tv logo is, is covered Is there a pin connection underneath or does tht have to be purchased? Can this be removed easily for connection to cable input? I'd like to be able to use this notebook as a DVR.

I know that this is a noobish question, but how do I actually use the acer 6920g built in TV Tuner? I have never used it before.
On the side of my laptop there is a USB port just for the TV tuner but i'm not really sure how to work it and what it actually does.
Is it used to record TV programmes and what software will I need to make it function?

I'm trying to get my HP Tv tuner to work right with my dv7 laptop. Hopefully you guys can give me some insight.
First off, either Quickplay doesn't read the tuner at all, or I'm not setting it up right. In the Quickplay TV area, I get no option to view live tv (although I see the option on the left side) and it merely provides a promotional image to buy the tuner.
For Media Center, it works. However its unbelievably complicated to go through channels.
First of all, EVERY SINGLE *point* digital channel (like 4.2, 7.3, 18.2, etc) doesn't come in automatically aside from the .1's. That means I have to manually add every single other channel. Is that normal? Second, all those digital channels are high definition yet they show up in 4:3. Why is that? Third, though this one isn't a big deal, all the channels are listed in the thousands, making it very confusing.
