Dell :: Pointer Locking Up
Feb 14, 2009Does anyone have a solution or have an idea why my e6400 pointer locks up intermittently? Sometimes it locks for about 1 minute. Other times I have to reboot.

View 3 RepliesBeen trying to fix my 2 year Dell Inspiron 1501 old laptop.
It boots up ok in to Windows XP, will run for a couple of minutes ie. find a wireless network, start up IE and then it will freeze. The weird thing is that the mouse cursor still moves.
CTRL + ALT + DEL has no affect ......
I would like to understand how to use this with my ATI 4650 HD Mobility Radeon Card,
but it says it's not supported, something about an unsigned driver during install "rivatuner.sys"
I would like to bump my Freq up on the GPU a bit and lock it down. But I am very confused by the instructions and what to do.
Well, my sound wasn't working, and it kept locking the machine up.
I reformatted my system with a fresh copy of Win7 Ultimate
Downloaded all the drivers, yada yada, but I'm getting a couple issues.
The IR Drivers REFUSE to load
I just purchased an e4300 last week. Whenever I try to stream hulu, or sometimes vids from youtube the computer locks up. It is really starting to get frustrating. I seem to have the latency issue in check. I read in a thread to download intels matrix storage manager, and that helped. I have also disabled the esata ports and LAN. I am running vista buisness x86 sp1. I am just using the drivers that came on the install cd. I am hoping that someone can help me out, because if I cant get this fixed I might just return it. I really like this computer and dont want to have to do that.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop that has a processor microcode update failure message on startup.
It would boot fine after I pressed F1 but last week I tried reinstalling Windows and the after the computer restarts, it locks up when it gets to the windows logo and scrolling bar (before the Windows classic screen where you put in the name, date, time, etc.).
Ive tried using 2 different Dell reinstallation discs and a Windows disc but it always happens in the same place.
I checked for a BIOS update but there was never a newer revision for it...A38 or A39.
What could be wrong? I don't have a Dell resource CD to run diagnostics.
I myself have an old celeron powered inspiron 1300, 2 gig ram-upgraded myself and an old onboard Intel 900 series gfx, yada, running windows xp...
it runs on the web very quickly- but its on its last legs, powers on and off, screen flutters, it overheats ,etc .....
I have a Precision M4800 that has its USB ports stop working in two cases so far. First, if I use the card reader at all, it works to access files, but then when I try to eject the card, it shows neither an error nor the "safe to remove" message. the card stays in the list of drives even after it's unplugged. If another USB drive is plugged in after this, it isn't recognized.
The second case is after using an external USB 3.0 drive for a while, it can stop working. The drive shows up in the list of drives, but all the directories appear empty. Unplugging doesn't remove the drive, and new drives aren't recognized. Once this happens, shutting down the machine crashes after a few minutes with DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE in either USBSTOR.sys or O2FJ2w7x64.sys. Could this be a hardware problem? It seems like the USB controller is locking up and the other drivers are getting blamed.
the laptop will boot up then freeze/lock up when all my desktop icons and windows bar at the bottom load up. The mouse won't move, the keyboard won't work. I've been told it may be either the RAM or hard drive, maybe even the battery. I haven't brought it to a professional yet because I'm dreading paying a ton of money for a cheap laptop.
View 15 Replies View Relatedi did a reformat but during it, it froze up and i had to force a shut down. when i turned it back on it continued from the same place and finished fine it seemed. but then it kept freezing up every 20minutes or so, or when it seemed like the processor couldnt handle what was going in. i started to think maybe it was overheating so i set it to adaptive and put the fan speed on level 5. it still freezes up but it takes longer to do so. its really annoying. i tried reinstalling all the drivers and everything and it kinda fixed it but it still freezes up. anyone know whats wrong? im ready to just smash this thing because ive been having important things to do and it keeps doing this crap.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSuddenly, after a year of use, the Cypress trackpad has become inaccurate. The pointer judders when I move it across the screen and when I tap to open or close something or anywhere on the screen, the pointer move slightly (usually up and to right by a small amount) when I tap. This is frustrating when trying to do simple tasks. This is not caused by a change in senstivity on the trackpad. I have checked all the defaults settings in case something changed. I am running Windows 7 on a XPS 15z.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a few days of happy 1810T ownership, the computer has begun to have a problem where the screen locks up tight. Nothing revives the computer except holding the power button down to force a powerdown. It reboots OK but shows the screen to optionally boot into Safe Mode.
The screen is a random color when this happens: sometimes green, blue or red. It is NOT the traditional "blue screen of death".
At first I thought it was due to some problems I was having with a conflict between The KM Player and Adobe Flash (as detailed here and here, for example). Luckily I had done Acronis 2010 images at each step of the way in the "new notebook" process:
- image made right out of the box by booting from Acronis disc first, before ever running Win7 on the computer (I call this the "Day 0 Image")
- image made after doing Windows Updates, Windows Security Essentials, installing apps (KM Player, IrfanView, FireFox, etc) and user data
Thinking the problem was due to the KM Player conflicts, I restored the computer back to when there was no KM Player, i.e. out-of-the-box Day 0 Image. This went fine and Acronis worked smoothly.
I did the Windows Updates but did not install any apps or user data... and the screen lockup still happens! Sometimes it happens soon after login, other times things run OK for a while first.
I am really concerned about this. If I can't rely on the computer to not lock up regularly, it is essentially useless to me. I am very surprised to see the problem even after an "out of the box" disk restore.
Any suggestions? Even if you don't have knowledge of how to deal with this problem specifically, do you know where else I can ask? What will Acer's take on this be? I am afraid they will just pass it off as "user error" and leave me stuck...
To Add:
1) I can't remember if this has happened only when on battery, or also when plugged in. I will check and see if it happens in both modes. If it only happens when on battery, at least that shows a path forward.
2) I have not tried to restore via the Acer eRecovery DVDs yet, though I don't know why this would be any better than the Acronis 2010 Day 0 image. I was in the process of burning the first Acer recovery DVD last night when... the screen locked up!
3) I have emailed Acer Support about the problem, though I suspect they won't trust Acronis 2010 and they'll tell me to restore via Acer eRecovery DVD...

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Presario 2195U and it locks all the time. At first it seemed to do it at random, but then I noticed it would lock every time during installation of XP Service Pack 3, or other long laborious installations. Any time you hear the fan kick into overdrive it seems that it will lock up shortly after. It locked several times during the installation of Windows XP itself.
I hear the fan spinning, and I keep the system on a hard, flat surface to maximize airflow, but it will still lock up during larger-scale installations.
I ask if the issue could possibly stem from over-heating; the system reaches a certain temperature and locks as a fail-safe. I've also noticed that it will lock less frequently when the battery is removed. When I remove it, the battery is very warm, Perhaps the battery is absorbing some of the heat being produced in the system, contributing to the overall temperature inside the chassis?
I have since installed Ubuntu Linux on it and it locks MUCH less frequently, and from what I understand, Linux is much less CPU-intensive. I do like Linux, but it isn't suitable for what I use the system for.
If over-heating could be the issue, I'd like to purchase a better/more powerful fan, power draw isn't so much an issue as it's almost always plugged in.
The specifications for the system are:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1.8ghz
Memory: 1gb SDRAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon Mobile
HDD: 120gb
OS: Ubuntu 8.10
If the problem is indeed thermal-related, then comes the question of how do I open the chassis...
I'm in college right now and one day I lowered my screen as to not to tmpt my roommate into looking at my windows and stuff. I went to take a shower, came back, and my screen was in a viewing position. The only reason i didn't close it was because I have some stuff I'd like to get continuous updates on on my computer. I was wondering if there was a way to basically lock the computer, without really shutting it off or preventing it from doing it's thing as it does normally. I'd like to be able to unlock it with a fingerprint scan. My laptop is an HP HDX16T.
Remember i don't want to put it to sleep or anything, just to lock it to prevent anyone from actually using it, like locks the mouse, the keyboard and stuff.
I have several of these machines (Windows XP SP3) all doing the same thing, will hang at the Windows XP screen. When the user is finally able to log in, maybe after 5 or 6 attempts they will have no network connection.
I have the latest BIOS and network card drivers loaded.
I've noticed that sometimes after using the pointing stick for a while that if I let go, the mouse pointer will continue to move in a direction on its own.
It will only last for a few seconds but it is annoying when trying to scroll through documents and such. Is this a touchcheck problem or a driver problem? Or is it hardware?

I have a problem on my xps M1530, that sometimes when i am typing the mouse pointer automatically moves backwards or opens another window that ihave minimised, even though i am not touching the mouse pad.
it's really annoying as sometimes I don't realise it happens and it ruins what i was doing.
It seems to automatically move the text to where the mouse is pointing on the screen if you know what i mean. So i think somehow the mouse automatically positions and clicks itself. any ideas?
Has anyone come across this problem before? PLEASE HELP!. THANKS

My Vostro 1520 touchpad pointer only moves horizontally. It runs win7/64. I have updated its driver to the latest version.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a brand new Yoga 3 Pro with the 256GB Liteon SSD. Every 20-90 minutes, it freezes up for up to a minute at a time. If I keep the task manager opened up and check it, I can see disk usage at 100%. System process is usually up at the top, but looks like it's only writing maybe 1MB/s, so it's not like it's at capacity.
I've updated the Intel Chipset to the latest drivers. Intel's RST tool seems to think everything is ok.
I recently got my Inspiron 15R SE, but the problem is that my touchpad mouse pointer speed gets reset after every reboot. I updated and triend reinstalling it but no change. It is Elan touchpad but named as dell touchpad.
View 1 Replies View RelatedGot an issue with new Dell Precision M3800 + HD 3100 Dock. My issue with with the mouse pointer. After using the laptop for 2-3 hours, I'm getting an issue in which the mouse pointer will jump over text boxes (does this in any browser, when trying to click in the formula field in excel, even when clicking in this dialog box to type). Basically what's happening is the mouse pointer thinks the text box is higher than it really is.
So, if I go up to the address bar from under, as I pass over the bar, the arrow changes to a text cursor, but jumps above the actual address bar...if I click, I can type in the bar. If I keep going, eventually the arrow pointer will come back, but it will jump back down to the actual top of the address bar. In the case of typing in this box for posting, in order to get the cursor here " ", I have to click where I have the star above (in the word "can").
It just seems like something is very out of sync, and I'm thinking it has to do with the graphics card or some resolution setting. I have an Acer V246HL set to 1920x1080 + a Viewsonic VA2746M set to 1920x1080 as well. Only fix I've found so far is to reboot. I've messed around with the resolution numerous times. This issue only appears when connecting multiple monitors (which is a necessity). I did not have this issue w/ my previous laptop, which leads me to think this is not a monitor issue either
My HP Envy 15-3040nr has an Intel i7-2670QM processor, which works with Turbo Boost just fine. My laptop goes to a maximum of 3.0 GHz when under full load (I render heavy gameplay videos), and underclocks just fine when in energy saver mode.
However, I want to know if it is possible to LOCK the processor's clock rate at a consistently high rate, say, something like 2.9 (or an unrealistic 3.1 GHz, the rated turbo high) GHz, assuming that heat is not an issue (yes, it obviously will be an issue, but let's just say it isn't).
Sometimes my cursor changes into a shape that's not in the list of possible mouse pointers and I can't print screen it, because it's not in the image when I search it..
It looks like this: 2small white triangles with a white line in between. Sometimes they point left and right, and my pc starts scrolling sideways, and sometimes they point up and down and it starts scrolling downwards.
I updated a lot of drivers and restarted my pc. I scanned for viruses, but nothing could be found.
It happens with or without a mouse inserted. It's really annoying, because surfing on the internet becomes frustrating.
O yeah, that pc doctor from the dell site did not find anything either.
It's a relatively new inspiron laptop (less than a year) and I have this problem since the beginning.
I am using a Acer 5610 with Vista and a touchpad. Often when I am moving my pointer over a list of files, with the touchpad, the pointer drags and drops files without clicking. Very annoying. I undo alot of unwanted moves. Acer email support does not respond....

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust got a brand new laptop, Dell Inspiron 11 3137, and updated to windows 8.1. The touchpad does not work properly now; gestures/scrolling/pointer not working. I've spent over 16 hours getting windows 8.1 installed and then troubleshooting this issue. I've contacted Dell; updated the driver from Dell, even tried installing the latest driver from Synaptic. I even tried setting the Synaptic app to run under the windows 8 version.
Touchpads have been around a long time. It's the last thing I expect not to work properly.
At this point I am ready to send the laptop back and call it quits on windows.
I have recently noted that, sometimes (randomly and rarely for the time being), the pointer of my bluetooth MM (Mighty Mouse) moves farther than what I was expecting it to move. This happened probably in concomitance with the opening of some application (Iphoto once). In other words, it appeared to me that the pointer accelerated more than what I demanded it to move with the displacement of the mouse. It was not really a uncontrolled jump (as it sometimes happens with optical mice) but like a transitory but self-contained loss of pointer control.
I believe that a similar event occurred also once with the trackpad pointer when I went to the bottom of the screen to make dock appear in concomitance with a skype call launch....the pointer seemed to move fast to the right although I am quite sure it was not my finger to command this motion on the pad.
I have tried (with respect to MM) to delete and recreate the bluetooth .plist but it did not prevent from having this occurrence (note also that the batteries are OK).
I have read in some other forum, here in this site, that this might be due to OSX pointer acceleration (not perfect) management.
