I have a DELL XPS M1710. It has the T7200 Merom processor installed. I have here with me a X7900 Merom Processor. Will that fit into my laptop? Seems to be the same processor.

Dell :: XPS M1710 Dead 7950 Support

Apr 14, 2009

My nVidia Geforce Go 7950 GTX burned out about a month ago and I have been running it in VGA mode here in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

Because I knew that Dell did not have support in this country I didn't contact support until last Friday, April 10, 2009. I had bought a full 4 year warranty when I bought the machine and the warranty expires in Sept 2011.

Dell agreed to replace the GPU under warranty, but said that they could only ship it to somewhere in the States, so I had them ship it to my office in Washington, D.C. and the package is now on its way to Dushanbe by DHL. I'll go inside and change the GPU myself, which, though, I'm not very handy with tools, I think I can do. I have the service manual and have reviewed the procedures and many of the very helpful posts on this site.

My question is that Dell Support is sending both the GPU and a new motherboard in case I need the latter. How do I know whether I need the latter, and should I just replace the motherboard even though the existing one seems to be running fine?

Dell shipped the parts to me on Sunday April 12 and they were received in my office in Washington on April 14. The invoice listed the total price for the GPU and motherboard at $1171.24, which apparently must be paid if I don't send the defective parts to them within 10 days.

Because I'm in Tajikistan Dell Support got a waiver of the 10 day deadline for return. I might just hang on to everything until I'm back in the States in October 2009.

Dell :: Does The XPS M1710 Hardware (Motherboard/Chipset) Support 4GB DDR2 Ram

Dec 26, 2007

I have a XPS M1710 2.2 C2D, 2GB with Windows XP Professional 32bit, and I am planning on getting a 4GB OCZ PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz Ram (OCZ2M8004GK) for my laptop.

My questions is whether or not the XPS M1710 hardware (motherboard/chipset) will actually support/make use of the 4GB memory.

The manual says the M1710 will take up to 4GB of memory, but some people say it will not (regardless of the OS 32 or 64bits).

I know that 32bits OS (Vista, XP, etc) will only see about 3.25 GB of the 4GB, but I have read that applications such as game and VMware will actually support and use (if necessary) all the 4GB of ram. Is that true?

What if the M1710 hardware does not support the 4GB then no applications will support it?

I also know that the M1710 is only supposed to handle up to DDR2 667mhz, but i will be getting the DDR2 800mhz $10 bucks cheaper than the 667mhz and I read that memory with a higher frequency than you system can handle will usually give you a lower CAS latency(timing) speed, so why not

Dell :: I Can't Buy M1710 Parts From SPARE PARTS W/o An M1710 SVC TAG #

Feb 21, 2008

I was going to be assembling an m1710 this weekend....

I called Dell Spare Parts a few days ago, and placed an order for the following;

HG345 Refurb bottom plastics, m1710
FF084 Refurb palmrest assy, m1710
J8841 Refurb speakers, LED, m1710
CF426 Refurb hinge cover, m1710

I've been watching the order on Dell's site all week, as it was scheduled to ship (on or before today) (2/21/08), and I opted for Next Day shipping.

When I placed the order, the woman I spoke with asked for my Service Tag number. I, um... don't HAVE one... I didn't say this, I simply said I don't have that information at the moment. She asked how I got the part numbers, and I told her from their own Spare Parts page.

Well....the order got cancelled today. Saw it online while at work, just before I left for the day. Another order number with the identical items was created, with a scheduled ship date of 3/3/08. WHAT?

The woman just called....she states they cannot process my order without a service tag number. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

I told her I don't have a tag number....she asked if I was building one. "Yes." To which I hear...

"Oh....well, I don't think our supplier will allow that without a service tag number, because we reserve those parts for people who bought m1710's."

I said "That's amazing...because I know a number of people who have done the same thing I'm trying to do, and had no problems getting these parts."

"Well, that's because they have m1710's"

*mad enought to scream at this point* "Um, no...where do you think I got the idea from?? I'm certainly not the first person to have this idea."

how I can get them to sell me some refurbished plastics? What's the secret password?

Dell :: Which Processor To Buy?

Oct 19, 2009

I'm about to get an studio XPS 16 and have a couple of questions regarding the components. I'm debating between the core i7 1.6 GHz with 6mb cache and the core i7 1.73 GHz with 8mb cache (the difference would be $350).

Also I was wondering if there was a major difference between the WLED and RGBLED screens? Finally, how much ram memory should I get, 4gb or 6gb? I'm just surprised that going from 4 to 6 costs $300.

Dell :: Does Not Support 64 Bit OS?

Sep 19, 2008

I recently bought an OEM Vista Home Premium 64-bit and installed is yesterday. I chatted to a Dell tech support guy today and he essentially said that I wasted my money on the 64-bit OS as Dell laptops do not support 64-bit Operating systems. He said this was due to the fact that my processor (see above) was a 32bit processor. I however came accross this intel site;[url] whci i believe to be my processor that states it is a 64-bit processor.

Another thing; in the dell tech support application, my total memory is shown as 4GB, whilst my available memory is shown to be 2.6GB. Does this mean that all 4GB is not being recognised/utilised? Or does it simply mean that 1.4GB of RAM is currently being used, with 2.6GB left for when I need it?

Dell :: Which Processor On XPS 1647?

Jan 21, 2010

I've been stalking the XPS 1645/1647 for a while now hoping that the overheating/under clocking issues get resolved. I'm to the point now where I just need to roll the dice and make one of these work for me.

Currently I work off of a Mac Book Pro (latest unibody) with the 3.06 GHz processor upgrade and the 256 SSD upgrade and 4GB RAM. I do primarily web design (.NET, WordPress, etc.), so I stay in Windows (via Bootcamp) most of the time or work on my Sony Vaio Z. I was waiting for the Bootcamp upgrade to come out in hopes that it would help the hardware cope with Win7 better. Well, it came out a couple of days ago, and it did help, but it's still lacking in a few ways.

My question is around the processor. My everyday activities, making up 80% of my day, are fairly light with the exception of Adobe Creative Suite apps and Microsoft Visual Studio, but I do a decent amount of video processing. I am looking for the most power available without sacrificing battery life. If I understand the processor options correctly, that would be the i7-620M. How would that processor compare to the i5 540M in terms of speed and battery life? I have read that the i5 is "newer technology" and "should" be more efficient than the i7's.

Dell :: Processor Shimming

Oct 1, 2009

I've read the threads on adding a copper pad with arctic silver in place of the junk stock thermal gum found in most laptops.
Is it possibly to lower the heatsink assembly instead of adding a shim? I feel that a CPU-arctic silver-heat pipe connection would be way better than a CPU-artic silver-shim-artic silver-heat pipe connection.
Also, is the 1mm rule a solid number or just a guesstimate? I've got a Studio 1737, Inspiron 9300, Vostro 1500, and Vostro A90 that all could benefit from this, I just don't want to mess it up.

Dell :: Better Processor Vs Better Screen

Sep 11, 2009

Well my bugets limited and i'm having a hard time choosing between

Upgrading from a
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P7350 (2.0 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 Cache)
to a
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)

Or upgrading from a
15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366x768) WLED with TrueLife
to a
15.6in Widescreen Full High Definition (1920x1080) WLED with TrueLife

I wish I could afford both but i'm afraid it has to be one or the other.

Do you think a 2.0Ghz processor would be enough for general usage, some photoshop and 3d work, and some middle-ish demanding games.

Or would the 1080p screen be a benefit even though I will not be getting a blu-ray drive. I could always use a HDMI cable to connect to my TV though.

Dell :: Processor Upgrade

if it is possible to upgrade my Studio 1535's processor (Intel C2D T5750, 2.0GHz). I cheaped out on most of the parts when I first bought this thing, as I was somewhat strapped for cash, so I went with the bare-minimum processor, but now I think I can do better.

So, is it possible to replace my processor? If so, what are some compatible models? I'm looking for at least 2.4GHz, for the record.

Dell :: Looking To Upgrade My Processor

Mar 14, 2010

I was looking through some of my spare parts the other day and I came across a Pentium M 2.13GHz processor I removed from an old laptop I had a while back. The only problem is it was just thrown in a drawer with some other laptop parts, where its sat for about a year.

I was just wondering if anything bad could come from using it in my laptop since it hasn't been stored in ideal conditions. I looked at it pretty closely and there don't appear to be any bent pins or anything.

I'll be using it for some photo editing, work and college.

2) "Unknown device" -- doesn't give any info as to what this is except that it's on the PCI bus.
