Dell Studio 1558 :: Blacks Out And Restart Occasionally - Noisy Fan
Feb 24, 2013
I have a noisy fan on my studio 1558 and on occation it blacks out and restarts. Is this an ongoing issue for this model and are their any recalls for these issues?
I've been frustrated all week dealing with a new HP dv7t that arrived on Monday (9/15). The moment I powered it up, the fan started running at full speed and hours it hadn't kicked off a single time. I've never heard a notebook fan more audible or more annoying before. It would be impossible to use the system in a library or other quiet setting without distracting others. Even with fan running at gale force, the wrist rest to the left of the touchpad was always uncomfortably HOT! I did figure out how to change the BIOS setting that had the fan set to 'Always On'. But it still ran 90% of the time!
I called this morning and got my Return Authorization, so it's going back on Monday and I refused to trade it for another HP....the fan in a store model I checked out yesterday was just as loud as mine....so that puts me back to square one- looking for a new laptop!
I've decided that I'd rather have a 15.4" model than a 17", so the Dell Studio 15 is high on my list. I also love the XPS M1530, but both of the nVIDIA graphics cards offered are included in the current nVIDIA mess that's been all over the news....
So, the Dell Studio 15 with the ATI Radeon HD 3450 graphics card and either the 2.1GHz T8100 or 2.5GHz T9300 is my front-runner at the moment. But I've got a few questions for those of you with some hands on experience and knowledge of the Studio models-
What percentage of the time does the fan run during normal usage (email, spreadsheets, internet)?
Is the fan noise muted like most other notebooks? Or is it more audible?
Are there any areas of the keyboard, wrist rest or touchpad that become uncomfortably warm to the touch?
I've tried to collect all the info I can. Please add as you seem fit.
Recently returned a dell 1745 due to bad fan control. While idling the fan would rew up to max each 3-5 minutes easily detectable by speedfan (see the last link). The core temperatures would slowly ("") increase to around 38 degrees when the fan starts at horrendous pace for ~10-15 seconds and cool the cores to sub-30 degrees and the whole show starts again. This is a showstopper and noone should really by these products.
It is as though the cpu fan only has two paces. Silent and Noisy. There shoudl of course be some kind of gradient in the fan speeds at different temepratures but his has not been implemented though very easy for BIOS coders to do so. The fan vigorously tries to cool the cpu to 30 degrees each time it hits ~40 degress - we're talking intel cpus that could easily go to 60-70 degrees without fuzz.
While idling any laptop should keep a constant temperature - the current lineup of inspirons and studios (at least 1564, 1745, 1747 an 1749) cannot achieve this and unleashes fan hell very often.
Untill fixed (which dell seems very reluctant to) don't buy dell. It's simply not worth it.
This have nothing to do with throtteling. And don't even get me started on doing something "cpu intensive" like browing.
I'm looking for a glossy, bright, rich color screen that has really, really deep blacks. There were some comments in the RGBLED settings thread that the blacks don't get very black on this screen. Is that true?
Would a white LED screen have better blacks? I don't care about photo work, I just want the best looking screen for games and movies.
While I would love to be able to go with the Studio XPS 16 (16470) it is just out of my price range. Here is what I'm trying to decide to pull the trigger on:

I will have to try to call them and order rather than order via the website directly as I want the Windows 7 Home Premium install and all the accompanying software to be in English (I live in Italy and that's the reason for the italian info in the configurations).
Opinions are greatly appreciated. I have read about the throttling issues associated with the i5s and i7s and I should not fall into those areas as I am not a gamer. What are everyone's thoughts? Go ahead and pull the trigger?
I was wondering if anyone has had problems with their Studio 1558 orders? I ordered on 23/02 and the EDD was 09/03, but it's now been put back to the 01/04!
The only custom components I requested were the FullHD WLED screen and the backlit keyboard. I have to say I'm not very impressed!
i found a old dell inspiron 8100 at my work that needs repaired.
the laptop works good except when i first got it couple days ago the screen would stay on but when you first start it would have a red or pink tint to it than would clear up after like min or 5min to normal.
so i ran it for couple hours because it did say with a note on the laptop the screen blacks out.
so that was true it went out than when i close the lid and open it would come back on for awhile.
and than it got to the point it ony comes on for like 5sec at start up than goes right off but you could see everything with a flash light facing it .....
Just received my Studio 15 today and it's a nice looking machine but the fan seems to run more often than I'd like. I've updated the BIOS to A03, the most current, but it doesn't seem to resolve the issue.
I got a new Dell Studio 1558 a week or so back. Ever since I got it, I feel a constant vibration to the left of the touchpad.
After doing some research and asking some questions, apparently the Seagate 7200 RPMs have this issue. I confirmed it was the HD by putting the HD to sleep and the vibration would stop.
The best solution to me seems to replace the Seagate with a WD 5400 RPM HD. I have been looking at their Scorpio Blue for this: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...4&sku=A2436199
Will it work with the 1558? And, how do I go about setting up the laptop after replacing the HD?
I don't have any important documents that need to be transferred, but I am guessing I will have to use the Dell DVDs to setup Windows?

1080p monitor is a must unless you need large text. The 1080p screen is perfectly fine for all use. I thought it might be too hard to read, but actually find it to be perfect given how crisp the image is.
Build quality is good, not as good as the XPS but still decent. At work I use a Lenovo T500 that has a magnesium skeleton under the lid and it very solidly built .....
Trying to decide between the 1647 and the 1558 - obviously, the 1558 is substantially cheaper.

I've not found enough so far to justify the price difference.

I'm obviously excited about receiving it, however.... after close to a week... it's still in "pre-production."
I've called a few times. First time I was told "It could take up to 48 hours to get out of pre-production and into in-production."
Fair enough. 48 hours later it was still in pre-production, so I called back and they told me it could be a payment issue. So I called the verification department and they told me everything was 100% good to go.
Anyway, different people telling me different things, finally I landed on some honesty. A representative told me that the problem is that there is a part on back-order and so that is why it hasn't moved into production yet. I'm guessing it's the processor, what do you guys think?
Anyway, the original delivery date was projected as February 4, 2010. The guy on the phone today said that I should expect the order to be moved into production within 48 hours (I'm not so sure I believe this) and that the delivery date will probably move to February 9, 2010.
I have absolutely no problem with this, part not in stock = no problem. My issue is, different reps telling me different stories. If it comes down to waiting till February 9 and I get my laptop then, I am fine with that, but if this drags on farther, I would rather cancel my order and purchase from another company.
What do you guys think? Also, has anybody actually received their 1558 yet? What do you think of it?
Had this Studio 1558 for about a week now. It's been mostly good, except it's been freezing for no good reason every so often. I'm not getting error messages, BSODs, automatic restarts, or any of that. The screens just stop responding.
I suspected it was a bad Win7 install, so I wiped and reinstalled Win7HPx64. Still froze. Went back to a single-monitor setup, still froze. Tried updating to the Catalyst 10.04 drivers, still froze. Disabled Powerplay, still froze. Changed AV/Firewall and uninstalled a pile of crap, still froze. Installed XP, then Ubuntu, still froze.
Odd thing? Nothing in the event viewer to indicate a crash, other than the fact that a kernel power error shows up because I force a shutdown. I've yet to find a .dmp file anywhere that would indicate an actual BSOD. Fan never spun up, CPU monitors and logs don't show any sudden spike or drop in processor activity. Think the 4570 is busted?
*edit* just recalled, I've also changed power settings so the CPU can't throttle, been monitoring all 8 cores, ran off battery and off ac, all to no effect.
happens whether i'm streaming video via hulu desktop, just browsing webpages, running virus scans, or just doing mostly nothing. ran the gamut of dell diagnostics, but nothing.
Just got a 1558 in replacement for a 1525. I popped the back cover to install my upgraded Wifi, and add the WWAN and Bluetooth... No extra mini PCI slots for the BT or WWAN - There is a sticker that says WWAN but no connector or wires.... Since my 1525 has these options ( I did not buy the BT or WWAN card from Dell ) do i ask for another system that has these on-board? Is Dell obligated to provide one that is capable even though in their records i did not have BT or WWAN.
I received a Studio 1558 with spec in my signature last Tuesday. Its screen just went crazy (changing colors, vertical screen, all sorts of things) on Friday and Dell offered me a new system replacement. I bought the system with Dell Preferred Account and also purchased extended warranty on Wednesday (right after I received the laptop) using my debit card.
I said go ahead and the rep in Philippines told me that she would process the new system dispatch on Monday, which is tomorrow. Now I'm thinking I would not want Studio 15 for durability issue, especially because of the screen failure in 3 days of opening the box. I loved virtually everything of the laptop initially but I feel like I should get a Latitude.
Question 1 So, I'll talk to Customer Services first thing tomorrow in the morning and return my Studio. Since I used DPA, I haven't paid anything for the system itself - this probably won't be a problem for refund. But how about warranty? Am I going to get that refunded to my debit card account as soon as I return the laptop?
I configured Latitude E6510 as follows: Core i5 520, 4GB @ 1333, 250GB @ 7200rpm, FHD 1920x1080, NVS 3100M, backlit keyboard, advanced-N 6200, no bluetooth, no webcam, no DVD burner, 3yr basic mail-in service warranty. I also decided to just get Windows Vista Basic 32 bit. They are charging US$109 more for Win7 Pro x64, but I'll be able to download it for free using my school's MSDN Academic Alliance program .....
I just got my studio 15 1558 laptop with win7 home basic... son I changed it to win 7 prof. SO, I was installing all the drivers from CD and i was all OK but NETWORK is now ...
I got a Dell Studio 1558 a few days back with a full hd screen. I tried changing the resolution to a lower one n it shifted down to a lower resolution but it din cover the entire screen! it had black bars on the side! any idea how i could
i installed a fresh copy of windows 7 32 bit on my machine and on dells website the drivers are on ly offered in 64 bit, most of them do not wrk on this os.
I bought a dell 1558 studi laptop and when I turned it on the fans were running like crazy, I installed speed fan and the cores (i5) were at 60 deg at idle. Bought some Arctic silver, cleaned it with the Arctic cleaners and skimmed it on as usual.I replaced the GPU and 2 smaller chips thermal stickers with Pyobia 7wt and slapped it back togther - jobs a good un.
But when it turns on from stone cold, windows starts up and goes to desktop. I can run speedfan and the cores are at 45degs, the fans then kick in successively faster and then the sceen goes black - computer still powered up fans running. If I then restart it takes less time for the screen to go black  - fans now running at vmax..It will happily sit in the Bios screen like a champ, (fans on max mind).
My Studio 1558 passes' the post test with the Dell logo and black bar underneath. Windows 7 does not load but the cursor appears in the upper left hand corner of the monitor. I can't log into safe mode or do anything with the computer.
I've had my Studio 1537 for about a year and once in awhile my laptop screen goesblank after my computer restarts or if I turn my laptop on. This happened to be about 10 times (the first time I spent about 3 days on the phone with a technian) already and I always have to reinstall Windows Vista to get my laptop working again. Today I found out that whenever my computer updates my video drive my screen will go blank, is this normal? What I can do to prevent this from happening again? My screen also goes blank when I install a video driver from the dell CD, but when I uninstalled it in safe mode and restart my laptop my screen is no longer blank.
I have a Dell Vostro 2510 running XP, where the display goes black after a couple of seconds, even in the BIOS. (This would rule out drivers, and anything associated with Windows). I can see the screen in a dual monitor setup, but otherwise it is always black. Reducing brightness effects no change.
However! If I remove the main battery for (no less than) one hour, I can normally get the screen back and it will stay on for hours.... that is, until I shut the machine down again. But, I have been able to contain the problem, by removing the main battery permanently. This gives a date-time error on startup, but there are no screen issues under this configuration - even when the laptop is shut off for hours.
WHAT I TRIED:
- Installing a new inverter for the Vostro - Updating the BIOS to the latest version (A6)
WHAT WORKS TEMPORARILY:
- Screen goes back on when you close the lid, then goes black two seconds later (this would seem to rule out a bad CMOS battery...) - Screen might come on if you change resolution, then goes black.
