i have a quick question... i'm running an xps 1530 (first run) with a 2.2 dual core, 4gb ram, 7200 rpm drive, and the 8600 GT card.
i today ran a system restore to clean everything up, with a format. is that as good as a full format/reinstall of vista? it seems to be running pretty well.
my main question is this... i've gotten back into WoW, and i'm having some hitching running it on max settings... should i have that issue? i feel like this should completely destroy that game.
I want to install a new ssd-drive, which is empty. I did create a DVD under rescue & recovery. But on startup with the new hdd, it only offers me a restore option, not a NEW system. R&R also only created ONE disc, imho thats not enough, dont I need some more for the whole system? Â And I cant backup the whole windows system, because even though its fresh its 80 gig (some data was taken along, dunno which)...
And thats my problem in a nutshell: I cant create discs with ONLY the windows install-system, or rather I dont know how
I now tried 3 times, and R&R burns only ONE disc, and booting from that, it asks for a recovery. I want a new fresh virgin system... Â I tried a couple of times, did not work. Had to swap back the old drive to work again. Â System: Windows 7 professional Lenovo L520
best way to install a *clean* version of Windows 8 to their Thinkpad that came with Windows 8? Â I ordered a T430s with low specs and Windows 8 and I dropped in an 8GB DIMM and mSATA drive. Â However, the Lenovo implementation of Windows 8 is maddeningly difficult to create backup media (you can't) and the Lenovo "restore" from the HDD partition won't allow you to restore to another drive. Â Plus, that kinda defeats my original purpose of a clean install without any bloatware onto a fast, user-installed mSATA or SSD. Â I have Windows upgrade media I purchased for my desktop, but that install program says the installation won't work with the Lenovo Product Key specific to my Thinkpad T430s (I'm guessing it's an OEM product key while the install media is an upgrade looking for a previously installed Windows 7?)
Let me first start by asking your forgiveness if I have stuffed this quick little guide in the wrong spot. I spent a rather brief 10 minutes searching this forum, and I don't believe I am repeating a write-up someone has already done that follows this simple method. If I am incorrect, I ask a moderator to please place this post in its proper home. Alright, on to the quick 'n easy...
I have a new VGN-AW235J, so proceed with courage and fortitude if our letters don't match. I found this as I was trying various ways to cleanse this beautiful machine of it's bloatware. It worked for me, and that is all I will claim.
This method requires that you create the restore DVDs.
If you don't have a handful of restore DVDs, go do that now and come back...and while you're up, bring a snack.
One more disclaimer: I didn't take the greatest notes while doing this, so my instructions may be sufficiently vague to cause minor trepidation on the part of the reader. With that being said, each step should be fairly obvious while in front of your machine...DVDs in hand..........................
My wifes Extensa 5620 got a virus. Office Depot removed it with MalBytes. I'm still leary of something being missed. I would really like to restore it to factory defaults.
When I go into Acer eRecovery Management I see pick the Restore tab at the bottom of the window.
Now I am given the choices to
1.Restore system factory default.
2.(Which is grayed out and option not avaialable) Restore form users backup
3.Recover from CD/DVD
4.Reinstall applaications/drivers.
So I pick 1. Restore system factory default.
Next I am asked for the empowering technology password. Well I don't have it and don't know how to get it. I would choose number 2. if it were an option. If I place the disk I made into the CD/DVD unit will the option become available? I tried option 3. and it said to place the restore disk inthe drive.

I got my laptop but did not do a clean install. I just removed all the bloatware I could think of. Is there a guide to do just that though, get rid of all the stuff that shouldn't be there so that you essentially have a clean install without all the bloat or footprints of it?
I can't install my integrated webcam. After downloading the driver and opening the file installation starts and then suddenly it just ends with the message there was an error during installing.
So the thing I've done are: installing the drivers, which failed.
I've also looked in the device managemer app but could find anything of a camera.
I’ve just done a clean install of my Dell Vostro -- reinstalling vista and removing the recovery partition in the process. Outcome = a ‘cleaner’ machine with none of the preinstalled bloatware/c**p from Dell. (first time I’ve done anything like this, but followed a brill guide in the Dell section of this forum ).
I’m about to tackle my Mums Compaq Presario C310EA. The aim is to remove all the rubbish she has accumulated over the years, incl any spyware/ adware she may have, and generally have a bit of a clean sweep…. hopefully resulting in a faster laptop. I’m backing up her data, and moving some of my Dad’s stuff somewhere else.
Basically I want to clean up as much as poss, but unfortunately she has no xp disk, just the recovery disks (cds) she burned when she first got the laptop.
As she has no xp disk I guess the best I can hope for is to reset the laptop to the factory settings (?) .. not ideal, but I don’t think the (factory set) bloatware is too much of an issue for her – she’s not a heavy user.
Should I use the recovery partition for this, or do I need to use the cds she burned? .
I’d like to know the best approach – and can’t seem to find a set of instructions to follow.
I got the HP HDX16 and I want to change the OS to Vista Ultimate 64 or Windows 7 64bit RC.
Thing is, I didnt find the programs that came with the notebook at the HP website. For example, Microsoft Works, Cyberlink DVD Suite, HP recovery manager etc.
Is there any way to install them after the format? Or do I have to get stuck with Home Premium?

for last three year never formatted my system, it was going good... recently some virus attack happend and it made my notebook verrrrrry slow, so i did the famous Ctrl + F11 !!
follow mark mck's bloatware removal, did a hdd defrag for non-c drive.
But my question is, even after everything the system is not running as fast it did in 2006
boot time is ~1min, shut down is 35 odd seconds...
So, my 2 cents say that after long usage, even if you do a factory restore DO NOT EXPECT a out of the factory hardware/speed, all u get is out of factory windows settings and bloatware ((
I have a problem with my Dell laptop. I got a virus , and i don't even know what did it do. When i start my laptop it loads like it was before( it says big DELL and Inspiron,then progress bar and F2 Setup and F12 Boot options). After that loads i see this thing flashing _ . And then red text comes up and says something like " Your laptop was blocked because bla bla bla" and after that red text this thing _ flashing. Keyboard is blocked, nothing happens when i try to connect USB or my mouse. The only thing i can do on my laptop now is press F2 or F12 while Dell loads, before that red thing.
Doing a clean install of Vista and keep getting prompted to locate and install driver for "Coprocessor". Have looked in device manager (yellow mark) but I just don't know what it is. Windows says it can't locate software for it.
Don't know what I am looking for on Acers site under drivers, installed all other stuff OK, Realtek, NVidia etc. Could it be a modem driver. Properties in device manager give no clues, it's listed as "other devices" along with the webcam which I have to sort drivers out for too.
I've followed the instructions for the system restore / format HD, but when I press F8, I do not get the option to restore etc...its just takes me back 'home' to the start up page.

I have a dell laptop computer (Inspiron 13 (7347, Mid 2014)). I tried to restore the win8 to a point but it failed. Now it can not start windows 8. "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. I recently purchased a new Inspiron 15 (5547, Early 2014), Windows 7. Within a few days, the speed of operation dropped to glacial speeds. It would take 10-15 minutes to open programs.
I've run virus and malware scans and this has not fixed the problem. I intended to then restore the system to an earlier install point, but every time I do I get a windows error "System restore did no complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed". The text of the message indicates I shoud disable my anti-virus software, but when I disable it (MacAfee, live scan and firewall), I get the same message. I get the same message even if I restore from safe mode, with MacAfee disable.The real issue is the incredible slow operation.

I have an HP G-60 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium that I tried to use the System Restore utility on several times. It would go through the entire process, restart perfectly, then I would get the following error message: "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer system files and settings are not changed. Details: An unspecified error occurred during System Restore." Obviously, a system restore utility that doesn't isn't much use.
I would like to have the full Dell-branded Windows OS DVD but I am not sure if Dell has discontinued this. Do they still ship these out? If not, do they charge for it or can I just get it for free?
Im running vista 64 home premium and want to use my upgrade discs to get to win 7.
If i want to delete the recovery partition when do i do it? Is the best process to back up my files and then do a recovery back to vistas original state when i first got the machine and them delete the recovery partition?
Then put in the win7 upgrade dvd? Can i merge the recovery partition with the main one in vista after to delete it?
How well will the E6400 work without the dell DCP software installed. I've had the E6400 only two weeks and thinking of wiping the OS and installing Win 7 again with only the necessary drivers, without all the Dell software. The machine was using over 3.1 gigs of RAM yesterday and there was NOTHING running on the taskbar. Looked at the process list and there was no one process that was consuming my RAM, I was getting nickel and dimed by all the processes that are running. DCP seemed to be a big consumer as well as CPU time.
