Dell Vostro 3700 :: Plugged In Not Charging

Jan 7, 2013

I have a Dell Vostro 3700 which has developed a fault, it will not charge the battery, and windows just shows as "plugged in, not charging.".I have done my research the past few days so I will clear up the following;I have updated BIOS and installed the Dell Battery Manager in order to activate charging as I know it can be disabled.

I have been in the BIOS menu in order to search for an option to supposedly disable/enable battery charging but there is no option in there (unless I missed it, but I have checked several times).BIOS states "adapter type" to be "unknown" and when laptop is first turned on I get a warning to say the adapter cannot be determined and the battery may not charge (which I am assuming leads to the problem).

I have another dell laptop (Studio 1735) that uses the exact same adapter type. Both adapters work and charge in my 1735, both don't work in the Vostro (which I assume eliminates the adapter as a suspect).I have purchased 2 new batteries off eBay, one genuine that is supposedly new although slightly used, and another brand new rip off, all 3 of the batteries will not charge (which I assume eliminates the batteries as suspect)

Dell :: Vostro 3700 Weight And Proc

Apr 11, 2010

I know there are a couple of 3x00 Vostro threads, but some are very long and the other did not seem to have an answer for this question.

First, I am very interested in this new Vostro. It seems a good configuration and design for the price. I especially love the 17" screen at < 6 lbs. Seems too good to be true.

Does anyone have experience with this machine? Is the weight including the battery and everything? It is a pound lighter than the 16" Sony F I am using. I like the F, but this Vostro seems a little more in line for me (PhD, heavy stats and datasets). My wife woul appropriate the Sony if I were to pull the trigger on the Dell.

Also, the i5-520m to i7-???qm (dual to quad, differing clocks and all). I am thinking the i5 may be the way to go. Most of my stuff is not designed for 4-cores, 8 threads, etc.

Dell Vostro 3700 :: Overheating And Freeze Ups

Apr 6, 2013

I bought a Vostro 3700 i7-720q used on ebay. After I bought it I found it would freeze. I eliminated everything I though it could be (i/o conflict, drivers, etc) and nothing worked. This was probably the reason it was sold on ebay. I noticed how hot the machine and fan got. I researched upgradeding the cpu to an i7-940xm and when got the chip planned to put in best thermal transfer to solve the freeze up problem I conculded was due to heat. I thought to be Powerstrate xtreme to be the best thermal transfer to use during the cpu switchout.

I pull the heat sink and its obivous why my machine was hot. The thermal past was a crummy job. I cleaned off heat sink with arctic Ice cleaner, put powerstrate xtreme on cpu and replaced the cpu with a i7-940. Boots up and has been running fine AND it is soooo much cooler.

Getting to the heat sink IS NOT an easy task in the Vostro 3700 - I love my Vostro 3700 BUT it is a very delicate task to remove the keyboard, palm rest and base in order to get to the motherboard and heatsink. I wouldn't do it again.

Dell Vostro 3700 :: How To Restore To Factory State

Jul 28, 2012

I have to restore my dell vostro 3700 to factory state, but I dont know how. I googled it and just found  the instruction like "restart pc, then press F8>repair your computer>choose language>log in as administrator and then choose recovery tool> dell datasafe restore and emergency back-up

It would be ok, but I dont have there the option of "dell datasafe restore and emergency back-up" I have there just startup repair, system restore, system image recovery, windows memory diagnostic, command prompt and that's all... I miss there the 6th option.

Dell Vostro 3700 :: Shutdown During Graphics Stress Test?

Apr 25, 2013

I have a Vostro 3700, i7,  8GB RAM, with Nvidia GeForce GT 330M.

When I run the "PC Check up" hardware test for the graphics card, the laptop shutdown a few seconds after the test is initiated.

This also happens randomly when running a rendering application called "Poser".

I have the latest driver for the graphics card installed, downloaded from Dell Support page.

I have cleaned the fan and replaced the thermal paste to avoid overheating. The laptop is not too hot when this happens.

Dell Inspiron 1525 :: Plugged In Charging But Battery Not Charging

Oct 12, 2010

I have had my Dell Inspiron 1525 for around two years. For the past month, when my power supply is plugged in, the battery does not charge. It has been stuck on 3% and will automatically shut down when unplugged.

I have seen that this is a very common problem, however, when hovering over the battery icon it says: plugged in, CHARGING, where as all of the other posts that I have seen say: plugged in, NOT charging.

I have tried taking the battery out and restarting but this did not work. I also drained my battery and tried to recharge but again, this did not work. My initial thought is that I may need a new battery but I just wanted to check first.

Dell Vostro 3700 :: Deletes Files From USB Thumb Drive - Bootup Stops Or Freezes

Mar 19, 2013

I've created a MSDOS boot disk on a USB thumb drive for a legacy application. After selecting F12 and booting from the USB thumb drive, the bootup stops or freezes. I'll power off the machine, boot back  into windows, and try to read the USB drive. One of two things happen,

A. the drive is corrupted with gobbeldy characters or won recognize at all, or
B. files will be deleted, autoexec.bat, config.sys, command.com

There is no rhyme or reason, I've replicated this 20 times and got different results. I've used 5 different drives, two of which are brand new.  Sometimes the laptop will freeze with a solid loud beep. I just was able to find an identical 3700 to test, and the same things are happening.

I've been able to boot this on over 20 different laptops, all core 2 duos, but moving to the core i3 on this 3700, this happens. Unfortunately I have no other newer machine to test this on, although it booted from a 3 month old compaq with an AMD chipset.

I've disabled/enabled the execution bit in bios, other than that what's causing this, I've never seen a BIOS do anything like this before.

I recently got the dreaded "Plugged in, not charging" message in vista of my Dell XPS 1530.My laptop is out of warranty .I tried all the methods suggested and flashed the bios to A09 from A12.I also checked the BIOS and it says

Battery Charge = 6%

Also when I connect the charger the charging light would flash for 5 sec. and then go off.Due to this the battery charge has moved from 6% to 7%.

I cannot buy a new mbd worth $500 . Any other cure for this ????

Dell XPS 13 :: Not Charging But Plugged In

May 23, 2014

My Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook is plugged in but will not charge.  The battery is completely drained and the power will immediately shut off when the power cable is unplugged.  The battery meter indicates "O% Available (plugged in, not charging)".  Every time I restart it I am told to plug in a Dell charger with 45 watts or greater.  Thinking my charger might have been the issue, I just purchased a Dell replacement charger, and it is still not recognizing it.  I have seen on other posts that indicate a possible solution is to update the BIOS; however, when I download and try to run the latest BIOS, I am told that the battery needs to be at least 10% charged in order to update.

Dell XPS 15 :: Not Charging But Is Plugged In?

Jun 26, 2012

my  Dell XPS 15z is only ten months old while on my computer last night something popped up saying:

'The AC power adapter type cannot be determined.

Your system will operate slower and battery will not charge.

This problem might be solved by:

Ensure the plug is inserted completely for best system operation. Connect a Dell 130W adapter or higher'

i've always taken really good care of my laptop never dropped it or anything i hope that its not broke...

if it is broken and i have my year warranty do i still pay for whatever new part i need?

Dell :: M1530 &plugged In. Not Charging Solution

Oct 31, 2008

i was having this wierd behavior of my laptop where battery woudnt charge above 6%, ive tried most of the "solutions" on the web, but none of them worked.

-Desinstalling Microsoft's ACPI-Compliant control method battery

-Doing a vista clean install

-Restarting/Removing/Plugging the battery from the laptop with the system running and shut down, and all sorts of combinations between.

-Trying different AC (from dell, some of my friends have got some dell systems, i tried a m1330 AC)

-Tried to find a battery calibrator, but was unsuccesful, and even tried to downgrade my BIOS, but couldnt because my battery wasnt charged above 10% (thats a requisite to flash the BIOS)

NONE OF THOSE WORKED.

So i called dell, they told me to go to the BIOS, tech guys told me that the problem could be figured out there by 2 ways, it'd either:

-Recognize the AC adapter (in due case, it was a battery problem)
-Or it wouldnt recognize it (in which case, it would be a MoBo or a AC adapter problem.

Turned out it recognized the AC adapter, so next step was to send me a new battery, since i had a 6 cell battery (which the dell guy confirmed after i gave him the serial number of the battery) i expected to receive a 6 cell battery replacement, but no, lucky me i received a 9 CELL BATTERY INSTEAD, free within warranty period (system is only 7 months old) so yeah, im happy, and my battery is charging again.

Everything is fine, so i thought i would share this info for you guys.

One thing to get in consideration: The embedded battery health indicator might not indicate that the battery is healthy, since my faulty battery had 5/5 green lights when i tried to check the health but was still faulty (my new one has 5/5 health lights and works wonderful)

Dell Inspiron 1525 :: Plugged In - Not Charging

Dec 23, 2008

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525 in April 2008.About 1 month ago I noticed that my computer would automaticaly shut down when the power cord was removed, I hovered over the battery icon in the bottom right corner and it said 0% available plugged in, not charging.

I googled the phrase plugged in, not charging and realised lots of people were having the same problem.I have tried restarting and shutting down my computer (with and without battery and with and without power cord) removing and replacing my battery (while laptop is on and off) a replacement battery from Dell my sister's battery and power cord (she also has a 1525)in my laptop and get the message plugged in, not charging. My battery in her laptop will charge but my power cord in her laptop says plugged in, not charging
removing the battery with the laptop on then restarting the laptop and replacing the battery uninstalling and reinstalling the Power Management Software switching between power plans flashing with current bios

All 3 batteries (hers, my original and my replacement) have adequate charge (50% or higher)I run with Windows Vista Home edition.I have been to the local Dell distributer and they tell me to call Dell.  I have tried calling Dell but I keep getting put on hold for 30+ minutes.

I changed the hard drive to boot first instead of the disk drive but nothing else happened.

I read that it was a hard drive problem when i searched the web. I took apart my laptop and cleaned all the dust off the insides and made sure they were clean. Put it back together and it was good as new. It turned on like normal. I was very much relieved, until I noticed the laptop wasn't charging. I've tried the flea reset, battery drain etc but I can't get the battery/laptop to charge. The laptop won't even charge on with the AC and no battery. My laptop has been fine for the last year or so and now 1 BSOD has ruined it.

This is the exact mesaage: "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."

Sometimes it doesn't even acknowledge that its plugged in.
