I've recently updated my XPS 1640 (with Samsung 256GB SSD, PM800) to Windows 7, and since then I've been getting a stalling/stuttering behaviour.
I've gone over quite a few guide on the net trying to sort it (Superfetch, write cache, etc.), but it's still a problem (very annoying if it happens while watching a film, for example).
I am using the Acer eRecovery discs (Windows 7 64 bit) on my Aspire V3-571. On multiple attempts at a recovery the process hangs at Step 41 of 60 when trying to load the OOBE (Out Of Box Experience) file. A second set of discs provided by Acer produces the same results. I have an extra 1TB WD SATA HD that I have swapped into the laptop for troubleshooting purposes. No joy there. The recovery process appears to run normally until it stalls at Step 41. It has hung at that point for an hour with nothing happening.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with my Latitude D400 laptop which has now occurred twice. Basically, after operating normally and shutting down properly it has stopped booting. After the POST screen it simply hangs at a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.
Using the recovery console to repair the MBR and boot sector on the HDD has no effect. Neither does a repair installation of Windows XP Pro. The first time it happened I backed up, wiped the disc and started with a fresh installation of XP Pro.
However, it's now happened again. The hard disc is completely undamaged (all files are intact) but will not boot at all.
1. Synaptics driver doesn't work properly, will grind everything to halt, mouse disappears, external mouse will center on the middle bottom of screen all the time, touchpad will not work. This with the version posted at support.dell.com for 1640/Win7 right now, and the version downloaded direct from synaptics.com.
2. Dell QuickSet crashes at bootup time, same download as above.
3. Webcam crashes often so seriously a bootup is required, now in testing phase with Vista 64 drivers.
What is the simplest way to get the BT working in Windows 7 on the XPS 16?.
There aren't any devices with missing drivers, but there is no Bluetooth either.
All I really need is mouse capability (I don't use any other BT functionality).

Not so fond of Vista. Like that is news. Anyhow I just want to know if any xps 1640 owner has achieved an install of Win 7 and managed to get all the various dell additions to work, ie dell camera facial recog, pinch touch pad, fual monitor etc.
I have an XPS 1640 and an ancient Dell Insiprion 9300 (1.6 GHz and just 2 GB ram) with XP.
Running identical programs on identical machines,. the XPS (2.6 GHz processor and 7200 RPM HD) is MUCH slower running programs (e.g., website creating programs, photoshop, etc.) The culprit must be the Vista.
I see the topic raised here before but no real clear answers. Has anyone eliminated the Vista on the 1640 completely and run the XP in its place .....
I was just checking for drivers for my 1640 (I recently re-installed Windows 7 RC 64 bit) and lo and behold, Dell is now showing 32 and 64 bit Windows 7 operating system choices for the drivers...
The available drivers you see when choosing 64 bit Windows 7 are certainly not all there by a long shot and most of them appear to be the same as the Vista drivers but it is at least a promising sign! The new Quickset driver appears to be specifically for Windows 7.
Is there anyone running Windows 7 build 7077 on xps 1640, I cant get none on my media button to work.
Can someone else with 7077 let me know if there buttons work.
I need Dell Quick Set for Windows XP so my Eject button on my notebook will work.
Does anyone know where I can find it?

i recieved my 1640 wiped it installed Windows 7, did the driver updates and everything works great.
The problem Im having is none of my media button, volume up/down mute, etc... on the top work. I did install Quickset, no luck.
Anyone have any ideas, i remember on my 1530 I have to install Media Direct or something like that
For those of you that have a 1640 and have upgraded from Vista to 7, how long did the install take you? And my second question is...did you run into any complications with the upgrade process that I should be aware of before I start it on my wife's laptop?

After I've been gaming for about 30 min the cpu clocks down to 0.27ghz and the bus to 182Mhz. I downloaded some software of intels website just to identify the CPU and this is what it reads:
Expected Processor Frequency: 2.40 GHz
Reported Processor Frequency: 0.27 GHz
Expected System Bus Frequency: 1066 MHz
Reported System Bus Frequency: 182 MHz .....

I have an XPS 1640 with the 3670 card. It came with vista, i put ubuntu on it, then figured it give win 7 ultimate 64bit a go since i got a free copy.
I had all the latest drivers/bios on it, and when I would try to resume from sleep id get a BSOD. Nothing suspicious in the event viewer, no dmp files anywhere. Just would not resume.
I tried fiddling with bios version and driver combos, and still nothing. The BSOD doesnt happen anymore, the machine just freezes on resume.
I would need a driver for the internal microphone on my Studio XPS 1640.
I am using Windows XP though.
What does everyone think about starting a dedicated thread for the XPS 1640 (and 1645?) with Windows 7? ("Official 1640/1645 and Windows 7 Thread")
I think starting now, there will be a flurry of driver updates, behaviors, tips, questions, etc.,
and it seems it would benefit everyone to have all those in one place instead of having to search through a myriad of individual posts
I'm thinking of upgrading to windows 8 directly from vista home edition and since the drivers aren't available. So how do I go about it?

I was watching something on youtube when I noticed a small dust-like spot/dot on the screen and i tried cleaning it off but it wouldn't go away. It looks to be inside the screen (if that makes any sense) and is evident when there is a black background/or when the comp is off. So my question to you is
1) what am i looking at?
2) Can i get rid of it?
3) Do other people here a have similar issue?
Does the 1640 play GTA IV well? In the official owners forum (1640 w/4650) somebody said its very sluggish but from youtube vids it appeared to play it very well. Can anyone confirm that it plays well at a modest resolution (WXGA)

I received my new XPS 1640 (2.1gHz, 4GB ram, 512mb vid, Vista 64bit) on Thurs. April 2nd.
Worked fine and dandy over the weekend, but then Monday the 6th I contacted Dell through their customer service feature and their rep took control of my computer trying to update the BIOS ....
Suppose I purchase one today at full retail price. Then, in say a week, there's a 20% (or whatever) coupon that comes out, or they go on sale.
Can I call Dell and ask for the difference? I know they have a 21 (or whatever) day return policy, so I would imagine the sale or coupon would have to come within that time frame.
Another question: Does the return policy time begin when I order or when it ships or when I receive it? .

I just recently bought a XPS 1640, and I am wondering if I have chosen the right hardware for the laptop. I'm a college freshman, so I need a long lasting laptop with good battery life and hard drive space.
