Dell :: Custom-making An Aluminum Bottom Panel For The XPS 16
Jul 29, 2009
I ask this because it's semi-common on enthusiast cars with weak points: Would anyone be interested in making a custom, aluminum bottom panel for the XPS 16 with air holes and screw holes pre-drilled?
I imagine it would maintain/add rigidity while providing greater heat dissipation (especially with an aluminum cooler underneath) and provide greater air flow around the hot under-touchpad side.
I ask because I imagine this would be a fairly simple thing to create, since it's a single sheet of aluminum with hole drilled at precise areas, vs. some of the more exotic individually-made parts I've seen.
My current setup I built myself is: [url] OS: Vista Ultimate 64 bit... XP Pro 64 bit on 2nd HD EVGA nForce 780i SLI FTW Mobo Intel 2 Quad CoreQ9550 running @ 3.8 Ghz 2xEVGA GeForce 9800GTX+ 512MB DDR3 2x2046 Patriot Viper 4096MB PC8500 DDR2 1066MHz 2xSeagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB Hard Drive 2xLite-ON 20x DVD Burner with LightScribe Aspire X-Cruiser Case Black/7 case fans/red-blue lights Apevia 680W Iceberg Power Supply Thermaltake Ruby Orb CPU Cooler Saitek Eclispse Backlit Keyboard-Red Microsoft Trackball Optical mouse Dell UltraSharp 24Ē 1920x1200 LCD Monitor 3DMark06 score: 20,029
I have over clocked my 9400mg geforce card and processor from 2.4 to 2.7, the system is very stable I guess i found the "sweet spot".
Anyway we all know xps 1340 heats up like a skillet. Im think about modding it in terms of cooling/fans/heat sinks... Im trying to find a copper or a better heat sink than the stock one. or maybe a slighty stronger fan?
Does anyone know any sites or information how to make it cooler...?
I dont want to buy a cooling pad because I think it looks adds extra stug the a very small laptop.
Just found this looking on ebay cuz my hand hurts from typing all day. Funny thing is, I didn't even include M1330 in the search.
This thing looks pretty thin and I'm wondering if it would even really help. It says "natural chamois leather feeling" but I don't think it would really reduce the contact pressure on my wrist. What do you guys think?
Also, would this leave an adhesive residue when it comes time to remove it? I'm sending the seller a message to try and clarify this.
who has an E6530 with BIOS rev A07 test to see if the 'Custom' charging mode functions properly via the Battery Information application that is installed with the Dell Feature Enhancement Pack ? The Battery Information application worked properly prior to the A07 update. To test:
2) At the DELL logo press F12
3) Select 'BIOS Setup' from the pre-boot menu
4) Select Power Management, then select the 'Primery Battery Charge Configuration'
5) Select the 'Custom' option (Write down which option is selected before you make the selection so you can restore this setting later)
6) Set the 'Custom Charge Start' value (e.g. 50, NOTE the BIOS will not allow a value less than 50)
7) Set the 'Custom Charge Stop' value (e.g. 75, NOTE: the BIOS requires this value be 5 greater than the 'Start' value)
8) Click 'Apply', then click 'Exit' and let the system boot into Windows
9) Launch the Battery Information application by performing the following steps:   9.1) Press the 'Windows' key   9.2) In the 'Search Program Files' search box type: 'Dell Battery Information'   9.3) Click on the 'Dell Battery Information' link in the search results
10) When the Battery Information applications starts, verify that the Charge mode displays 'Custom' (see figure )
11) Click on the 'Change Setting' button
12) Verify that the 'Custom' mode is not listed (see figure)
13) Verify that the 'Start' and 'Stop' values which are set in BIOS are NOT correctly displayed, and that you are unable to change the 'Start' and 'Stop' values.
14) Restore your charge configuration by selecting the Charge mode you wrote down in step 5
How do I add custom resolutions to my HP Envy 15 with an ATI Radeon 5830 card? I don't want it for the laptop screen, but I want to be able to use an 1366x768 resolution when I connect it to my HD Ready TV.
I've tried to use Powerstrip but the button for Advanced Timing Options is grayed out for me.
Is there anyway to customize the multitouch trackpad on a MBP outside of the options in System Preferences? Specifically what I want is 3 finger swipe up to do the Mac equivalent of maximizing.. whatever that's called. The green plus sign
I get a free copy of Windows 7 Enterprise from my school. My question is, if I order a SXPS with Win 7 Home Premium, reformat the hard drive, do a clean install of Win 7 Enterprise, can I reinstally of the the Dell and third party software that came with the system, such as the Blu-Ray software player? Is there any disdavatage to doing a clean install?
I've got the HDD option, which replaces the optical drive with a normal HDD, and doesn't come with proprietary Sony SSDs. I've been thinking about and testing RAID configurations, and this thread is meant to gather some thoughts on that. At some level it's probably easier to go the Sony SSD route, but... I prefer something else
There are two parts: (1) external RAID, (2) internal RAID.
Part 1: External RAID
I went down this path because I believed that there's only one SATA port offered by the HDD-option. From Intel [url], it appears that the port multiplier functionality is not implemented in the ICH8, which is what the Z1 comes with. This means we can't get two or more drives to logically share the same SATA port, which means that they have to appear as one logical device, which in turn means that some sort of external RAID/BIG hardware is needed.
I tried a number of hardware RAID solutions. The first was the Silicon Image SiI 4726, in a mini-board with a form between the 2.5" and 1.8" drives. Unfortunately, after configuration on a (old) desktop, the chip offers only its admin drive ("Config") to the bios and Windows, rendering it impossible to boot off of...........
I've got a 1080p screen on my Envy 15, and I'd like to be able to play some games at 1366x768, but I cannot switch to that resolution by default. Does anyone know how to set a custom resolution of 1366x768?
I just have one more question before I pull the trigger. Originally, I was looking to buy a new computer whether it was a laptop or a desktop. At first, my eyes were on a Vaio Z (P8700, 4 gigs, etc.....), Macbook Pro...etc...
The reason that got me to change to desktop is its performance numbers on paper. I already have a laptop so the new computer can either be desktop or laptop. In all seriousness, how much of a "day-to-day" performance boost will I notice by going with the desktop? (a noticeable enough performance to make me say..."wow it was really worth it to go with a desktop"? Day to day activities include opening many many windows including browsers, word/powerpoint, msn, movies, etc. Some more demanding applications will include photoshop/lightroom and some games.
By talking to a lot of people on forums, they keep on saying that for day to day operations, I won't notice any difference (I want the most smoothest experience, opening/alternating windows...which I am not getting with my laptop at the moment). Even for these small day to day applications, will I notice a difference in this desktop against one of the latest laptops? Honestly, gaming is important but not the deciding factor here.
I was also thinking of getting a premium laptop and then buying a Samsung HD240 as an external monitor but people said it will put great stress on my laptop (overheating issues...)
Just checked the website cause I caught something at the corner of my eye as I was getting drivers for my laptop.
But does the dv6z artist edition have it's own theme? By the looks of this, it might just be for the website, but anyone who bought this have this theme installed? I'm guessing they used some type of software such as Stardock WindowBlinds or something similar.
I need to reinstall Vista on my Inspirion e1505 because I can't get it to work now, but the sticker that has the product key has rubbed off the bottom. Is there a way I can get Dell or Microsoft to reissue me a product key? Or what are my options here
The bottom line is that this laptops are not worthy to buy!
1. Throttling Issue (No real fix so far) 2. Random freezing (Speculations about driver fix) 3. Brightness control stops working randomly (remove batery to fix) 4. Sub-buffer rattles (nobody knows why) 5. Stereo leaks between left and right (no fix) 6. System runs extremely hot (1645 a little bit less than 1640)
All-in-all nice looking and feature complete laptop with a lot of issues.
I have noticed this for awhile now, but I have been able to ignore it previously due to the problem being discrete and im not a very picky person. But as time went on this has gone far worse than i thought. As you can see in the 3 images i have attached below there is severe discoloration of the aluminum palm rests/base pieces of my xps laptop in the form of an imprint of a human hand.
The print on the left is the worst and the prints to the right of the touch pad are a little bit better. I have only owned this laptop for roughly 8 month and i dont even use the laptop that much everyday.
I really dont feel like calling dell support again cause i just called them to replace my faulty screen 2 weeks ago and i really dont know how a Dell technician can come to my house and fix this unless he replace the whole base.
I know people have stated that they are liking there new laptop. My question is more of a what would you do type deal. How does the 1730 perform in vista with wow and world in conflict etc? are u guys having any studdering issues? Reason I'm asking is that im getting ready to pull the trigger on this or a alienware 9750. I have never used vista, my desktop is running xp.
I have read the forums and searched but i want to know how it performs in game. Are you guys missing the horsepower from the 7950? Im just looking for a some advice on what i should do.
I received my M6400 with 1920 x 1200 RGB LED Display, I just noticed that at the Left Bottom corner there is an Orange type color shadow, just on top of the Start buttom in the taskbar, is this normal ? do I have to ask Dell for a replacement ?, do I need to do any color adjustment configuration ?
The L521x drivers clearly have  a problem when any two finger scrolling can cause the document in any program to immediately skip to the very beginning or the very end.
This issue has come up in the thread [URL] ....  but that has been incorrectly marked as answered and I'm concerned that the issue will be buried because of that.
Synaptics have released several driver versions since the 188.8.131.52 driver, up to 184.108.40.206, fixing many issues including a BSOD, whereas so far for the L521x we have just had A03 and A04 variants of the same driver (220.127.116.11), neither of which solve this problem.
I have dell Inspiron N5110. From past few days, it is auto scrolling to bottom of the page. Even if I try to scroll up its taking me down.
This problem exists even outside OS. I mean I have multiple OS installed on the system. After boot when OS selection windows opens, its always selecting last OS present in the list. System always makes some sound when this option is selected.
Regarding the keyboard. I have installed new keyboard last year under warranty.
I chose a Dell Inspiron and believe the model is 15R although I can't be sure as I cannot remember exactly which one I chose to begin with and just checked my Dell boxes and all I saw was 'P17F', so I don't know if that's the model haha! But anyway..
Ever since I got my laptop to begin with there was the occasional time where it would switch off randomly. At first I found no reason for it and thought it might just be me and that I need to be a little more careful with it. Then it became more frequent and I noticed that it's when I move my laptop. I had it on my lap one day, I pulled my laptop a little closer to me as I was reading, and it shut down. I turned it on again and all was fine but now, 15 months on it's becoming a daily problem. I have checked the bottom of my laptop and see nothing that could be causing it. It is at the point now where small things such as tilting the screen back (and my laptop moves), setting my laptop on a cushion even the tiniest movements can cause it to switch off.
Just a minute a go, I put my sofa recliner up and it shut down as it was resting on my lap. I turned it on again, moved my leg slightly and it went again. I put it on a cushion because sometimes that works, it shut down again. I moved my laptop slightly to position it on the cushion better, went AGAIN. Then I tilted the screen back ever so slightly, it went again. I'm wondering if it's just the battery, as my battery only lasts for two hours unplugged when at first it lasted for five, then went down to three, and now two.
