HP/Compaq :: Doesdv6z Artist Edition Have Custom Theme

Jun 27, 2009

Just checked the website cause I caught something at the corner of my eye as I was getting drivers for my laptop.

But does the dv6z artist edition have it's own theme? By the looks of this, it might just be for the website, but anyone who bought this have this theme installed? I'm guessing they used some type of software such as Stardock WindowBlinds or something similar.

HP/Compaq :: Custom Resolutions ForEnvy 15

Mar 2, 2010

How do I add custom resolutions to my HP Envy 15 with an ATI Radeon 5830 card? I don't want it for the laptop screen, but I want to be able to use an 1366x768 resolution when I connect it to my HD Ready TV.

I've tried to use Powerstrip but the button for Advanced Timing Options is grayed out for me.

HP/Compaq :: HP Dv6500t To Dv6 Quad Edition

Mar 2, 2010

Realizing that my computer is now a little over 2.5 years old, I had a little time to think about whether I should even think about going over to a brand new notebook. Given the specs of new notebooks these days (and a lot of people know here that I spend quite a bit of time at the HP website/FTP), I was wondering what everyone here thinks about me going for a Quad Edition notebook.

In case you're wondering, I use my dv6500t notebook extensively mainly because I am a UCSD Computer Science/Engineering student who does a lot of activities on the computer both casually and for work, for a good portion of the day, everyday. If I get a new notebook, I plan on using it extensively as well.

The specifications for the dv6500t that I currently use is listed in my sig. It additionally has a 12-cell battery which at this moment can only charge up to 58%, and a rather broken left TouchPad button. Warranty is pretty shot at this point, since I had the 1-year standard (which I have no regrets with).

Now, the Quad Edition notebook that I was specifically looking at was the pre-customized HP Pavilion dv6-2190us notebook:...........

HP/Compaq :: Dv4t Special Edition

Jun 5, 2009

Does anyone have experience with the dv4t Special Edition?

I've been researching pretty hard for a while now, as I'm getting a laptop as a graduation present, and I keep coming back to this one. I really like the specs on it (4gb RAM + 400gb hard drive) since I do a lot of digital art and photography work, and even small things like the memory card reader. The estimated battery life is good, and most of the reviews I can find have been positive.

I was just wondering if you guys had any extra input on this- I've seen the dv4 owner's lounge, but the Special Edition seems like a fairly different computer. I want to be absolutely sure I'm making the right decision!

Oh, and Best Buy seems to have a much better deal than the HP site right now. Does this look good, or is there anything crucial I'm missing that I'd be better off custom ordering for?

Also, Windows 7. Presumably I will want to upgrade to this when it comes out. Are there any future upgrade offers I should be aware of? I seem to recall reading something about this, but I don't remember exactly what.

HP/Compaq :: DV-6700 (special Edition)

May 20, 2010

I've found a deal on craigslist, supposedly this laptop is in perfect condition and I can get it for $300, however I've read that it usually runs into a lot of problems like, overheating, and screens that just stop working. Also notice, that they discontinued the product.

So, should I just avoid this, not worth the risk?

HP/Compaq :: HP Envy 15 Vsdv6t Quad Edition

Oct 21, 2009

Any views on the differences (and value) between HP Envy 15 and HP dv6t Quad Edition?

As far as I can see, with the maximum upgrade options selected below, for an additional ~US$1,300 all the Envy 15 gives you over the dv6t Quad is: 16GB DDR3 RAM instead of 8GB (valued as $500 difference on the Envy 15 customisation page) 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4830 instead of 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M external vs internal optical drive (query whether this is an advantage, weight vs convenience) 1920x1080 instead of 1366x768 display extra 9 cell battery (valued as $125 difference on the Envy 15 customisation page) it's a bit thinner, lighter and 'prettier' What do you think? Is all this really worth $1,300? (Or if you accept the values given by HP of the extra RAM and battery, is $675 a fair price differential for the HD4830, higher display resolution and overall build?)

As a follow-up question, what do you think of these specs generally - or is it worth waiting for further customisation options for the Envy 15 (eg, the dual SSDs in RAID 0 promised by all the HP marketing) and for eventual price drop (when will either of these occur)?

The following specs / upgrade options were used for the above comparison, all from HP Direct, major differences are starred...

HP/Compaq :: HP Mini 1140NRVivienne Tam Digital Clutch Edition

Aug 24, 2009

Intro

The HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition first caught my attention for its beautiful Peony design. HP teamed up with New York based designer Vivienne Tam to create a fashion forward digital clutch. The Vivienne Tam edition is a compliment magnet where ever you take it and the matching accessories make it even more attractive. However, don't let this fool you as a digital clutch is just a fancy name for a netbook which is what this HP mini boils down to.

Specs:

The specs of the Vivienne Tam Mini are very similar to the ho-hum specs of all the other netbooks out there. However, where most other netbooks use small SSD's or average size 2.5 SATA Hard drives the HP Mini uses a 1.8 inch PATA ZIF HDD.

Intel Atom N270
1GB DDR2
60GB HDD
10.1 LED Back lit LCD display (1024x576)

What's in the Box:

This unit was purchased as a refurbished model from ecost.com so not everything was included. The box included the HP mini, a power cord, 30 watt AC adapter, and Recovery DVD. The only thing not included is the silk like sleeve that accompanies the retail version. However, at $380 USD for a refurbished model versus the retail $700+ the sleeve will hardly be missed.

HP/Compaq :: Brand NewDV6t Quad Edition Core I7-720QM

Mar 1, 2010

I am selling a VERY, VERY Brand New DV6t Quad Edition Core i7-720QM. The notebook has only been opened and turned on to ensure everything is working. This is a CTO (Customized to order) from HP. This is NOT a refurbished notebook. It is very, very Brand New.

Specifications I've listed below.

I also just recieved this notebook from FED-EX last Wednesday, February 24th 2010.
Notebook also comes with a 2 Year Accidental Damage Protection Warranty (Began on 02/24/10 - Expires on 02/24/2012)

My Reason for selling: The standard 1366x768 resolution in every notebook (including this one) is just way too low for me. I am accustomed to using a 1920x1080P resolution. I am simply selling it to buy a notebook with a 1080P resolution.

Sony :: Vaio VPC-Z1 (HDD Option): Custom RAID

Apr 25, 2010

I've got the HDD option, which replaces the optical drive with a normal HDD, and doesn't come with proprietary Sony SSDs. I've been thinking about and testing RAID configurations, and this thread is meant to gather some thoughts on that. At some level it's probably easier to go the Sony SSD route, but... I prefer something else

There are two parts: (1) external RAID, (2) internal RAID.

Part 1: External RAID

I went down this path because I believed that there's only one SATA port offered by the HDD-option. From Intel [url], it appears that the port multiplier functionality is not implemented in the ICH8, which is what the Z1 comes with. This means we can't get two or more drives to logically share the same SATA port, which means that they have to appear as one logical device, which in turn means that some sort of external RAID/BIG hardware is needed.

I tried a number of hardware RAID solutions. The first was the Silicon Image SiI 4726, in a mini-board with a form between the 2.5" and 1.8" drives. Unfortunately, after configuration on a (old) desktop, the chip offers only its admin drive ("Config") to the bios and Windows, rendering it impossible to boot off of...........

Apple :: Macbook Pro 15.4 Or New Desktop (Custom Built)

Nov 14, 2009

I just have one more question before I pull the trigger. Originally, I was looking to buy a new computer whether it was a laptop or a desktop. At first, my eyes were on a Vaio Z (P8700, 4 gigs, etc.....), Macbook Pro...etc...

The reason that got me to change to desktop is its performance numbers on paper. I already have a laptop so the new computer can either be desktop or laptop. In all seriousness, how much of a "day-to-day" performance boost will I notice by going with the desktop? (a noticeable enough performance to make me say..."wow it was really worth it to go with a desktop"? Day to day activities include opening many many windows including browsers, word/powerpoint, msn, movies, etc. Some more demanding applications will include photoshop/lightroom and some games.

By talking to a lot of people on forums, they keep on saying that for day to day operations, I won't notice any difference (I want the most smoothest experience, opening/alternating windows...which I am not getting with my laptop at the moment). Even for these small day to day applications, will I notice a difference in this desktop against one of the latest laptops? Honestly, gaming is important but not the deciding factor here.

I was also thinking of getting a premium laptop and then buying a Samsung HD240 as an external monitor but people said it will put great stress on my laptop (overheating issues...)

Dell :: Custom-making An Aluminum Bottom Panel For The XPS 16

Jul 29, 2009

I ask this because it's semi-common on enthusiast cars with weak points: Would anyone be interested in making a custom, aluminum bottom panel for the XPS 16 with air holes and screw holes pre-drilled?

I imagine it would maintain/add rigidity while providing greater heat dissipation (especially with an aluminum cooler underneath) and provide greater air flow around the hot under-touchpad side.

I ask because I imagine this would be a fairly simple thing to create, since it's a single sheet of aluminum with hole drilled at precise areas, vs. some of the more exotic individually-made parts I've seen.
