I've been looking at laptops recently because I had a liquid scare w/ my current. I've been looking at the e6400 and e4300 alot at the outlet, they seem to be good machines for a good price.
Is there any downside to the e4300? I like the fact that its a whole pound lighter. I can get the same spec'd e4300 for aboug $50 more. It looks to just be a smaller clone of the e6400.
What about the GPU in the e6400? I've read alot of overheating issues, but I'm afraid to not have the power. I don't play games, I watch movies occasionally and I plan on using an external monitor in the future. Would I be able to do that w/o the nvidia gpu?
I noticed they come w/ a 3 year warrenty...do the provide mail in, or would it be worth it to pay for on site?
Simple tasks are freezing/stalling for a couple of seconds before they respond. For example, when I open "control panel" it takes about 3-5 seconds to get all the icons up. When I open volume control from the tray, it takes a good 2 seconds to respond to me clicking on the volume bar. Lastly, iTunes has noticably slowed down as well; takes a second or two to respond to my commands.
Maybe im nit picking here, but should simple tasks respond instantaneously? I have definitely noticed a slowdown since I got this machine 4 weeks ago.
This is all with just iTunes and one or two windows in Firefox open. IE7 is not even an option cuz its so much slower.

Battery is completely dead, no charge, have to keep it plugged in to stay on. I bought a battery at batteries plus because I needed one asap, well for some reason that battery made my monitor die when it was in.
Once I took the battery out monitor was normal. I don't really want to buy off dell as I'm not looking to spend that kind of money for a battery. Just looking for a battery similar to the one Dell provided,

I keep seeing one's that 'work' for Precision 4300 but are $30-$40 which I seem kind of skeptical of. Just needing input on what to look for and where from one's around here who know a little more about this than I.

I have a Inspiron 6400 laptop which has a tru life screen, but it's the shiny type that is more of a mirror than a monitor I've just upgraded to a latitude 6500 and the wife is having mine but hates the screen, so I need to get a matt finish one..... I guess cheapest place is eBay???
I also want the new screen tosupport a higher resolution, would this mean I need a new gfx card, as I'm sure it uses a intel one built into mobo ....
On new years eve i knocked a glass of wine onto my Dell Inspiron 6400 and immediately unplugged it and removed the battery in order to let it dry out for a bit.
After trying it a few times and the laptop not turning on the battery light began flashing 3 times in red and then nothing still not turning on.
A day or 2 later when i tried it again it this time turned on and was working fine all day (about 12 hours) untill i accidentally pulled out the AC plug in the back and it turned off and now wont switch on at all. When i now press the power button the battery light turns red but doesn't blink and still get no power.
I have been having trouble with my Dell Laptop recently. I have a dell inspiron 6400 and when i try to power it on it wont turn on. When I press the power button , the num lock and caps lock LED'S begin to flash for a few seconds before going off.
I bought a E 6400 and was wondering if anyone's right speaker grill not as solid as the left grill. I'm able to push down on it and it pushes in a little bit. The right one is really solid

I recently had a little incident that rendered my old Inspiron 6400 unusable (and a biohazard; it got barfed on). Anyway, fortunately my CompleteCare warranty isn't up until May and I managed to get a replacement--but the tech said he couldn't guarantee that all the specs of the new laptop would be as good as my old ones. He wrote in his notes that I needed a 1680*1050 screen or larger and a dedicated graphics card (I do a lot of image editing), but what are the chances that I'll get a computer back that doesn't have these?
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 that current has a Intel T2400 1.83Ghz (Core Duo) and I'm wondering if anyone has upgrade recommendations for this? Currently I have .99GB Ram so that would probably be okay but any ideas would be appreciated.

All of a sudden, after some time, when I turned the laptop the screen has become very dim and I can't get it back to normal. I tried Fn+Up but it doesn't work.
The thing is that my aunt started downloading updates and things from Dell (as she told me,
I wasn't there) and in one of those updates, there was the bios, she updated the system, and then it never came back to life...,
so I was wandering if there is a recovery method with a usb floppy drive (I have one),
since I've tried the Windows Key + F and Fn + F with no avail, is there other option, other than replacing the motherboard? (I live in Chile, and here all computer related things are very expensive... and I don't have credit card to order overseas )
I purchased this laptop about 3 years ago and up until a few months ago it was a well capable laptop. Since the original purchase I put 2 gigs of Ram in and a new higher capacity HD and thats about it.
Around a year ago I started noticing the audio skipping on everything. Youtube, all video file types, mp3's and flacs. It didn't really bother me at the time because it was a skip or static sound every several seconds. Now more recently it is once every second and really bothering me.
I am not a computer wizzard and take all the help you can offer. Here is my problem. On my inspire 6400 the sreen went black. After this happened, I connected an auxilery monitor which worked perfect.
I need to know if I can change the color an Inspiron 6400 (gray to black), using the plastic pieces of a vostro 1000 (black). I think they are the same.

firstly i thought may be antivirus problm but i uninstall that one.....soooo now again same problm........after 1-2 hours
when i click on the "show hidden icons" in taskbar then the taskbar icon display is veeeery very slow...and overall performance is much much much slow .....
In the forefront we can see the hinge, and in the background we can see the piece behind the hinge (PBTH) - I have no idea what to call it, so from now on it will refer to it as the PBTH. =)
Ok, the problem I've had - for years - is that the PBTH does not stay where it is supposed to stay.. the three plugs do not stay in their holes. This has caused the outer plastic part of the LCD cover to split when I close the lid.
After a few years of this, the bezel cracked on me... so I decide to get a new bezel, and I tried to fix the hinge problem.
I'm not sure what mechanism was used to keep those 3 prongs in their holes, but I was going to try contact cement (for a lack of better ideas) - if you have any other ideas, please let me know.
But now my problem is this:
Last night I glued the PBTH into place, put everything back together..tried close the lid - was met with major resistance - and the glue/PBTH bond broke.
I want to upgrade the ram on an older Inspiron 6400 from 1gb to 2gb. When I look online (including old posts on this site), it seems there are 2 options:
2 x 1GB Module 1024MB-533MHz DDR2-533 PC2-4200, 200p SODIMM; or 2 x 1GB Module 1024MB-667MHz DDR2-667 PC2-5300, 200p SODIMM.
Would my system be compatible with either types of ram? It currently runs 2 x 512MB 533MHZ DDR2-533 PC2-4200 .....
She's been getting a message when she turns it on that the battery has lasted as long as it can last and need to be replaced but she NEVER unplugs the system (
It's a 17" desktop replacement so she can sit in the kitche. (lolstereotypes)) My dad told her that it now wont turn on because the battery final bit the dust but it wont turn on plugged in.
It wont turn on without the battery in it either when it's plugged in. My dad ordered her a new battery she doubts it will fix it
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 which I bought in the UK new from Dell in April 2007.
The battery is a 9 Cell type (upgraded when bought).
Within the first year it got used on the battery most of the time.
After that it has been plugged in with battery (for backup incase of power outage) about 95% of the time.
Now the power only lasts a few minutes before it totally dies. It charges up to 100% and discharges normally down to roughly 85%. Then this is the strange part, it jumps all the way down to 6% charge .....
I'm currently using a Dell inspiron 6400/E1505 notebook although i wish to upgrade to a studio 15 or 17 i cannot afford it at the moment i can however afford to upgrade the notebook i have a little bit more, the 2 upgrades i'm considering are,
Upgrading the RAM to 2 x 2gb (I spoke to someone on these forums a while ago about it and apparently it is possible) but i'm unsure if its worth it because i can't see anything that'll be different enough to warrant the upgrade .....
