Dell :: E1505/ 6400 Motherboard Or Ram Going Bad?

Jan 8, 2010

I purchased this laptop about 3 years ago and up until a few months ago it was a well capable laptop. Since the original purchase I put 2 gigs of Ram in and a new higher capacity HD and thats about it.

Around a year ago I started noticing the audio skipping on everything. Youtube, all video file types, mp3's and flacs. It didn't really bother me at the time because it was a skip or static sound every several seconds. Now more recently it is once every second and really bothering me.

Dell :: Inspiron 6400 / E1505 Need Hinge

Mar 25, 2010

In the forefront we can see the hinge, and in the background we can see the piece behind the hinge (PBTH) - I have no idea what to call it, so from now on it will refer to it as the PBTH. =)

Ok, the problem I've had - for years - is that the PBTH does not stay where it is supposed to stay.. the three plugs do not stay in their holes. This has caused the outer plastic part of the LCD cover to split when I close the lid.

After a few years of this, the bezel cracked on me... so I decide to get a new bezel, and I tried to fix the hinge problem.

I'm not sure what mechanism was used to keep those 3 prongs in their holes, but I was going to try contact cement (for a lack of better ideas) - if you have any other ideas, please let me know.

But now my problem is this:

Last night I glued the PBTH into place, put everything back together..tried close the lid - was met with major resistance - and the glue/PBTH bond broke.

Dell :: Is It Worth Doing Either Of These To A Inspiron E1505/6400?

I'm currently using a Dell inspiron 6400/E1505 notebook although i wish to upgrade to a studio 15 or 17 i cannot afford it at the moment i can however afford to upgrade the notebook i have a little bit more, the 2 upgrades i'm considering are,

Upgrading the RAM to 2 x 2gb (I spoke to someone on these forums a while ago about it and apparently it is possible) but i'm unsure if its worth it because i can't see anything that'll be different enough to warrant the upgrade .....

Dell :: Inspiron 6400 / E1505 CPU Upgrade?

Oct 21, 2009

I DID search but found conflicting information.

I have a Dell here that I just picked up free due to having a busted screen and a bad battery. Luckily I have a HUGE pile of dead laptops and had these parts!

The laptop says Inspiron 6400 on it but the service tag shows up as a E1505 on Dell's site. The service tag is 4Q38YB1 if that helps.

I put two 1gb DDR2-800 sticks in (though it comes up as 533MHz) and a 120gb SATA drive in.

Dell :: Inspiron 6400 / E1505 Screen Brightness

Mar 29, 2010

I've had my trusty Dell Inspiron 6400 since 2006 and it's still going strong, but over the last couple of months

I've noticed that the screen doesn't appear to be as bright as it used to be. It's as if the brightness isn't set to full, but when you try to increase it you discover it is at full brightness.

Can LCD screens become dimmer over time and would a replacement screen fix this?

Dell :: Inspiron 6400/e1505 Hard Drive Upgrade

Mar 11, 2009

I want to upgrade my laptops hard drive. It currently has a Hitachi Travelstar 7200RPM 80GB Hard drive. I want to upgrade to at least 300gb capacity,

preferably not losing out on speed either. Another issue is heat, currently my laptop gets MEGA hot and sometimes even freezes up/slows down (Im pretty sure its because of heat) and I wouldnt want to get a hard drive that runs hotter than the current one.

I dont know whether I need SATA or SATA300, 8MB or 16MB, 2.5" SFF or 2.5"x1/8H. Also, if I got a 5400RPM replacement (effectively downgrading the speed)

would I really notice that much difference ?? I 80% web browse, but the other 20% I video and photo edit and game, and I wouldnt really want to sacrifice performance if it made a big difference.

Dell :: Inspiron 6400 Motherboard Issues

Jun 18, 2009

My original Dell motherboard recently got fried (smoke, zap noise etc). I ordered a new one from eBay as Dell Canada doesn't sell them. The new one arrived today and I put it all back together.

When trying to power up, the green lights turn on for a couple seconds then goes off and nothing happens. The fan doesn't even power up.

Could it be something I did wrong (I've triple checked everything!), a bad replacement motherboard, or perhaps something else that got fried when the original one died.

Dell :: Inspiron 6400 E1505 And 4GBs Of Memory (Questions About Dual Channel Mode)

Apr 13, 2009

I have a question about 4gb of memory on inspirons. I recently put in 4GB's memory in my inspiron (Corsair brand) and I am running XP(x86) aka 32bit. Windows sees 3.25gb's which is exactly correct.

Awhile back I read that the inspiron motherboard which is an intel, will not run the memory in Dual Channel mode, which will slow the memory down about 3-5%. However I am not sure of how true or not this is. I put the memory and checked my bios and its showing all 4GB's and "Dual Channel" enabled.

So the question is how real is this dual channel concern if the bios is saying its in dual channel mode? PS we are both running the latest bios A17.

Dell :: E1505 Not Booting: Suspect Dead Motherboard

Feb 23, 2009

After a night away from town, leaving my laptop on as I usually do, came back to find a black screen with computer still running. I suspect Windows Update ran and had trouble with something. Powered off, turned back on, and the startup hung as the OS was loading.

Safe mode said the hang was at crcdisk.sys (I searched for this on the internet, but was not able to do much with it, as will soon be seen). I got my Vista installation CD and tried to boot from it, but it would not -- not even if I removed the hard drive from the computer. A friend had a similar laptop, and we exchanged hard drives; his would not boot in mine, but mine would in his (all data intact). I tried reseating the RAM;

no good. Another friend lent me a Ubuntu boot cd, which also did not complete loading. Long story short, I can't get anywhere where I can do anything meaningfully useful. I can't get to a command line to run chkdsk, or to the internet to flash my BIOS, or to a text editor to write papers for school. The people I've talked with say probably the motherboard is bad.

I was able to get to an unhelpful IT fellow for a few minutes, and he was able to boot Windows 98 from CD, but he didn't let me do anything, or have the CD. I'm going to try to find one and see what I can do from it .....

Dell :: E1505 New Motherboard, Standby And Lock Computer Don't Work

Mar 13, 2010

I just had a new motherboard installed in my E1505 under warranty by a Dell Tech. They sent a new hard drive with it, with Windows XP already installed. I also still have my original hard drive. After the motherboard finished installing, my Standby no longer works...

actually it goes into Standby, but immediately wakes up, without me touching a single thing. Also, I can't lock my computer by pushing the Windows logo + L. Using that shortcut actually logs me off the user. I tried this with both the new hard drive and the old original one. Both of these things worked fine with my old motherboard.

I did a clean install of XP on the new hard drive, and still it doesn't work. So far the Dell tech that I've been talking with online and on the phone doesn't have the answer. I've been talking to him for several days now

Dell :: Inspiron 15 (or 1535) & Inspiron 6400 (or E1505)

Feb 20, 2009

I am looking into replacing my old Dell Inspiron 6400, as it has been excellent -I think I should buy another Dell!

I am looking at the new Inspiron 15, which has a 15.6" display.

Can anyone tell me whether the actual laptop itself is bigger or smaller than my current 6400? I am interested in knowing width.

I see a lot of dead space on my 6400, and hopefully Dell realized this, and instead of making another 15.4" with dead space, they made use of this and gave a better display!

Dell :: Laptop, 6400 Vs 4300, And GPU

Apr 22, 2009

I've been looking at laptops recently because I had a liquid scare w/ my current. I've been looking at the e6400 and e4300 alot at the outlet, they seem to be good machines for a good price.
Is there any downside to the e4300? I like the fact that its a whole pound lighter. I can get the same spec'd e4300 for aboug $50 more. It looks to just be a smaller clone of the e6400.
What about the GPU in the e6400? I've read alot of overheating issues, but I'm afraid to not have the power. I don't play games, I watch movies occasionally and I plan on using an external monitor in the future. Would I be able to do that w/o the nvidia gpu?

I noticed they come w/ a 3 year warrenty...do the provide mail in, or would it be worth it to pay for on site?
