Dell :: M1330 Common Power Problem?
Mar 24, 2010
OK so I purchased a broken m1330 with hopes of fixing it (I own m1530 and had no problem with it) When I connect charger to it light on the charger gous off. Laptop shows no signs of life when I press power button. I took the entrire laptop apart and looked over motherboard and see no broken components. How can I fix this motherboard? there has to be a bad component that gous an those boards after all some people repair/refurbish them.
Also what motherboards would work on this laptop since I noticed there are several versions part numbers of them ...

I recently sent my Sony Vaio FW in repair, the hinge was squeaky and on the verge of popping off.
They took it in and repaired it under warranty, but there is still a little play in the cylindrical shaped housing of the power socket.
Is this normal? do all vaios carry this vunerability?
I keep my vaio on my desk and avoid putting any stress on the housing of the power socket.. the power button housing on the other side of the machine feels rock solid.

My 2.5 year old Dell XPS M1330 would not power up. (An overheating gpu/motherboard was replaced 1.5 yrs ago from Hong Kong Dell).
I installed windows update then it is in auto shut down after installing.
I booted it, it was updating some dir files in DOS (the usual), then screen goes black for a moment, I thought it just preparing to go to Windows logo but suddenly it powered off by itself.
Then after that, it won't power up anymore.
It won't power up through battery and AC adapter plugged in. Tried other combinations also.

I'm looking for a new notebook and the Studio 15 looks good, although I've read a few reports about issues and wanted to see what the 'current' revision of the Studio 15 coming out of Dell were like.
Previous issues I've seen reference to are:
- Low speaker quality
- Touchpad is erratic
- Volume control has little 'in between' and sometimes resets itself
I'd appreciate it if anyone can point out in a mature way if there are other inherit problems with this model...
Also I'd prefer to run Windows XP - is there enough community support to allow XP to be installed with all key devices (video, audio, network, hotkeys) functioning?

My XPS m1330 with Win 7 RC1 refuses to work on AC power from yesterday. In the last few weeks I had noticed that occasionally the laptop will stop charging the battery and will be running on the remaining battery power even though connected to the AC power outlet.
From yesterday it completely stopped recognizing the power from AC adapter. I removed the battery and tried to turn the machine on AC power alone. But the machine will not boot up.
The AC adapter shows the blue indicator light however the machine doesnt seem to take the power from i

I'm looking to sell my vaio CS series and purchase a mini 9 with XP and the 10" screen.
I'm curious to hear from owners of any common problems with this model. For example,
a problem with my laptop model is faulty fans that buzz and creak, which was rather annoying.

so my power brick is on the verge of death.
Now, I was looking at the 65w replacements on eBay and the like, but everything seems to have a round plug now, as opposed to an octagonal one.

I have to choose a new computer and I'm not sure what to pick. They're replacing my old e1405 aka 640M (see stats in sig).
I have a small selection of open box units to choose from and don't want a bigger laptop than the one I have... that leaves me with just xps1330s to choose from.
I need to choose quick and was hoping I could get some community help since I don't have time to research.
1) Can I change the exterior colour of the xps (for business reasons)?
2) How much does the dedicated graphics card effect the battery life vs no graphics card on the 6 and 9 cell? Is it worth the loss in battery life to get this? Can I add or remove this later?
3) Are there any known problems with the computer? Common complaints?

Round 1 was the GPU and thanks to that ordeal I made my share of posts in the venerable "Vertical Lines on Reboot & Crash & Vertical Lines" thread.
To insure I wouldn't have to go through a mobo swap again, I also did the infamous Cu Mod - which, btw, worked flawlessly and I still support the concept, regardless of which revision nVidia GPU you may have.
So talk about my astonishment when my 1330 just powered off instantly last night while I was doing some 3D work (*and* charging the battery...). At first I thought it was an OS glitch but after noting that I couldn't power the 1330 back on, I realized I was dealing with another issue.
Round 2: Symptom, diagnosis & prognosis:
>1330 will not power on and the external PS's blue LED is not lit.
>Connecting the 1330's PS (adapter) with the 1330 causes the PS to immediately switch off (fail-safe circuit).
This is easy to determine because the infamous blue LED goes out and stays out until you unplug and replug the adapter to the AC outlet (mains). Reconnecting the 1330 with the PS causes the PS to once again switch off. And so on.
>Hence, my second Mobo replacement is on order... sigh.
There's the slight chance that it's only the so-called "charger Board" which is actually connected to the mobo (see my pics - link in my sig. below) but the last time they replaced my mobo, they replaced the charger board along with it.

This problem actually popped up on me a few months ago, but I was able to remove and insert the power cord a few times and the message would go away and I would be able to charge my battery. But as a month or two passed, it became more finicky, and I had to jiggle with it a little more, but still, I was able to charge my battery and use my laptop wire-free.
Now today, I've been trying all day, and cannot for the life of me get the battery to charge. I get the following message when I plug the wire in.
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."
Also, I think its worth nothing that a lot of people mention that this error message comes up while they are booting their Laptops, mine only comes up once Vista is loaded and I attempt to reinsert the cord.
So, I have tried another Dell charger, a 90W one, and the same problem does occur (My original is a 65W). I am planning on getting a different battery tomorrow to see if it is the battery, as this ones usable life was getting quite low, down to barely a half hour per full charge. My warranty, although I'm not sure of the specifics, was not expired when this problem first came up, but is now expired by I would say 2 months at the most.
Oh, I have a M1330, and I have gotten a lot of use out of this laptop

Well I got my M1530 today and pretty happy with it overall.
The only thing I don't understand is, I got that wireless remote but I thought there is a pocket on the side of the laptop that I can put the remote in there?
Well, after wiping windows I began the steps to put on Linux. Now I've never had a laptop so I'm not sure if this is a common thing or a problem,
but on the bottom of my LCD screen it seems that the screen is secured too tight to the casing. It gives off a whitish blur at the bottom of the screen only in black displays.

I bought my laptop Dell XPS M1330 in September 2009... I have not had problems with this until now. Three days ago I turned on my laptop in order to read a pdf file , but I noticed the my file went constantly down and therefore, I was not able to read it... It seemed like the "arrow pointed down key" was permanently pushed down! So I reboot my lap but I had the same problem. The next day, again, I turned on my lap and at that time the cursor was moving constantly to the left like the "arrow pointed left key" was pushed down!
I tried with Dell diagnostics and this showed me the next errors:
-ERROR CODE 3600:0853 PRIMARY_BATTERY_BAY The battery can not provide sufficient power.
-ERROR CODE 2C00:0423 KEYBOARD-Stuck key detected
When I was testing the keys (of the keyboard) this showed me:
Expected: e048 Read: e050....Expected: (something) Read e050.... And so on
Should I have to replace my battery and my keyboard???

I received my 1640 yesterday. Big props to Dell, since I bought it on Friday around 3pm (outlet "previously ordered new") and Fed-Ex attempted to deliver it on Monday at 10am (picked it up at the distribution center at night).
I also received my 9-cell battery, but haven't had a chance to use it or review it, so this will focus on the 6-cell.
First - Boxing: Non-fancy tan cardboard box. The laptop was encased in foam and a foamy-sleeve.
No bags were included with this laptop. I got a slim AC adapter (probably about 1/3rd weight of the previous bricks), some cds, and the laptop. Nothing else. Should I have gotten a sleeve of some sort .....

Problems with the Thinkpad X220 and my Samsung 840 Evo 256gb SSD drive. Let me give you a rundown of my past 4 months...
October 2014. Purchased Thinkpad X120E. 1.5ghz processor and low memory made it horrible. Put in 8gb and bought the Samsung 840 Evo 256gb SSD drive. It made the laptop much more responsive but it still sucked...so I sold it. I kept the SSD drive for my 'future' thinkpad.I did the firmware update on the SSD as it required it. It currently has the most recent firmware. When I bought the SSD drive, I plopped it in, installed windows then openSUSE and enjoyed it for a bit. Never gave me an issue at all.
January 2015: Purchased an off-lease X220 with the 2.6ghz processor. Has a 320gig 7200rpm drive in it. Put in 16GB of memory and love it.After playing with it for a bit, I did the most recent BIOS upgrade (1.39) and prepared it for the SSD install.I put in the Samsung 840 evo. Turning on the laptop it sits at thinkpad logo a lot longer then usual. After a bit it goes to the Error 2100.I went into the BIOS, HDD is not detected at all.I kept trying to boot/restart but no go. I always see that Error 2100. I can tell when it won't boot because the thinkpad logo sits for a long time and it seems that the HDD light is always on.I tried to boot with and without UEFI...no go.
I tried to boot with SATA as AHCI or compatibility, no goI put the Samsung drive into a dock and attached it to a laptop. Disk management see's the drive. I can format it and all.I put the SSD drive then into a friend’s computer tower. I formatted the drive using the Samsung software. I tried to put it back into my laptop last night, no go. Drive is not being read.My friends desktop detects the drive in his BIOS just fine...
I believe this is an issue between the BIOS and the SSD/firmware. I looked at some of the updates for SSD's and the thinkpad BIOS, they identify a small part of the model number of the samsung drive but it is not the same.

I have a Dell Latitude D800 that will not power on. When the power button is pushed the green power indicator light comes on, the CDROM spins for a moment, but then nothing happens, there is no BIOS information displayed, no power on self test, no Dell logo. It just sits there with the green power light on.I have tried removing the power & battery then pressing the power button for 10 seconds (actually, I have tried as long as 60 seconds). I have tried to turn on with the power connected but not the battery. I have tried removing the connector cable for the power button and the connector cable for the display and then reseating them.

When I pull the power cord to switch to battery power while in Windows my lcd goes to black. The only way I get my video back is a hard reset and reboot. Later on I tried this and everything was back to normal. Why is this happening? Is this some weird standby?

I have just installed an i7 2670Qm on my T420 today. The machine will crash pretty soon after booting up, with the screen having colorful vertical and horizontal lines before it restarts itself and give the memory error beeping pattern (1 beep-pause-3 beeps-3 beeps-pause-1 beep). So then I took out one RAM from the bottom, and the machine appears to work normally again, more or less.
In the OS (Win7 64), The power manager alerts me that the 65w AC adapter is giving not enough power, so the laptop is running on battery. I thought I just need a 90W AC brick so the laptop will work as it should, so I am arranging a 90w one to come in later. But on a second thought, if the battery cannot start the laptop with 8GB of RAM properly.
Is it the CPU or RAM or Mobo or something else? Where should I look? The machine works fine with the previous CPU i3-2310m and 8GB of RAM.The RAM modules I have are 2 x 4GB Samsung 2Rx8 PC3-12800S-11-11-F3.The BIOS version is updated to the latest 1.46.

After replacing the fan, I have a power up issue with the laptop. Basically, the laptop will only power on with the power cable disconnected at the motherboard. It was by mistake that after the fan was replaced and everything was put back together, that I noticed that the battery was not charging.
I then reopened the machine and reconnected the power cable to the motherboard and nothing - no power.
When plugging in the power source with the battery in place, the LED adjacent to the power socket lights up WHITE then stays ORANGE and will not power up. No other lights, no fan noise, nothing.
If I remove the battery, the LED adjacent to the power socket lights up WHITE and stays white however will not power up either. Same agin, no other LEDs, not fan noise, nothing.
I have now opened the machine back up and disconnected the power from the motherboard. Put it all back together and the laptop powers up as normal with the battery and it works fine. (Well until the battery runs out anyway).

I have an Aspire 6930 that suddenly died and will not power on. The LED power button was dark and unresponsive. I performed a power reset and the blue light on the power button came back on until I pressed the button to try to restart the laptop. When I did that, the blue LED immediately went dark and stayed that way until I did another power reset. It never gets to the point of anything powering on. Is it a problem with the battery or it the laptop toast?
This is a real bummer since I just replaced the hard drive a few weeks ago and replaced Windows Vista with Linux Mint (which btw is blazing fast compared to Vista).

Lately my laptop would freeze and I could see faint white lines only at the top of my screen. (lines do not go all the way down) This has happened twice in a day. Ctrl Alt Del doesn't work so I have to power down the system and it runs normal after that.
I'm really afraid its the dreaded vertical lines issues. I had my mobo + GPU replaced a year ago, still under CC warranty but its such a pain.

I've had my M1330 for about 1 1/2 yrs now. The first issue is that at one point 3 months ago,
I was being randomly electrocuted by my laptop when I placed my hand on the open space below the keyboard. About a few days after the random electrocution started, the battery died, and won't recharge at all.
Lastly, there is a constant whistling sound that was coming from the laptop ever since I bought it.
I'm out of warranty. Am I able to buy a new warranty for my laptop at this time or is it too late for me? And if it is too late, should I attempt to make repairs through Dell, or am I better off selling the laptop,
and then use the cash towards a lower pc, like those mini/EPC's that these companies are selling now?

Does anyone know if I can install 8 GB of RAM in my M1330? I now have 4 GB, but when upgrading to 64-bit I'd also like to add some memory.
I bought the computer in August 2008, and have the latest bios.
I think 800 MHz is the max speed I can use, does anyone know about any modules that will fit, if possible
