Sony :: Is It Common For Vaio's To Have Delicate Power Sockets
Feb 11, 2010
I recently sent my Sony Vaio FW in repair, the hinge was squeaky and on the verge of popping off.
They took it in and repaired it under warranty, but there is still a little play in the cylindrical shaped housing of the power socket.
Is this normal? do all vaios carry this vunerability?
I keep my vaio on my desk and avoid putting any stress on the housing of the power socket.. the power button housing on the other side of the machine feels rock solid.

I have studio xps 16
last week, audio jacks stopped working
and I couldn't hear anything neither from headphones nor integrated speakers
so as a quick solution, I disassembled the laptop and soldered 3 wires over the jacks to make integrated speakers/mic work
Now I can hear sound but of course still can't plug external speakers, headphones or mics .....

I'm typing this on my other computer, but my Z has mysteriously encountered some power problems all of a sudden.
I can't turn it on. It just happened all of a sudden. No noise, no lights, no movement.
I did manage to turn it on by taking out the battery, unplugging it, and waiting 6-8 hours afterwards, it would turn on, and in the middle of booting up, it turns off. If I'm lucky, it'll make it all the way into windows and then shut off again.
I have to mention that I have opened up the laptop previously about a month ago, and cleaned the vents and fans off with compressed air, and applied AS5 to the CPU and GPU. Not sure if that's related, but that was a while ago.

So my brand new SR490 is already having some weird power issue. What happens is, the adapter stops powering the computer. This started happening randomly last week. I would be sitting there on the computer, and the screen would dim (I have it set to do this when it goes onto battery power).
I would move the adapter around, make sure it's plugged in right, but that didn't change anything. After a few minutes,
it would switch back to AC power by itself. It was worse last night, when the battery actually died because it wasn't getting a charge. The computer was just sitting on the desk and it kept switching between AC power and the battery .....

I've been all over the internet, gathering whatever info I can find, but I'm stuck. It's a Vaio PCG-FRV26 (PCG-9J5L) that just shut down one day, had a very slight 'burn' smell & will not power on, no lights. Opening it up it was full of dust balls & the fans were filthy - cleaned it real nice with vacuum & compressed air. I replaced the power jack, had it tested & there definitely is power to the board, also had the AC adapter/charger tested & it's good. I also played with various combinations of RAM chips in & out, re-set button, on/off with adapter & battery in/out combinations, holding on button variations etc. Still no lights or power. I've opened it up 3 times now, everything looks new/intact/great.
I have a PDF manual for this series, but cannot find the CMOS battery in the laptop! I don't think the manual is that great, not enough info, detailed explode schematic is not enough, tricky to follow, says where the CMOS/RTC bat is but I can't find it. Is it under the motherboard? do I have to remove MB?
If laptop did overheat - can I re-set it?

I have a VAIO VGN SZ230P. It has always worked fine. Recently, it has begun to hibernate after about 5 minutes when plugged into its power supply. When on battery, it operates normally. I have tried two different power supplies, same problem. All sleep, hibernation and power setting are off, yet it still happens. All virus and malware scans come up clean.

I have a Vaio Z550N and although it was working perfectly until this point, now I am having the issue of the computer freezing up (completely non-responsive) when I re-attach it to the AC adapter after having had it on battery power.
It doesn't happen every time... but it is enough to be exceedingly irritating. The only major change I have made to my computer recently is upgrading the BIOS to the latest version from the Sony Support site.

I know of course that the current Sony utilities are not really meant for Windows 7.
However, does anyone have Windows 7 RC with the VAIO Power Management utility installed?
If so, do you also see the issue where the PM plan is not called 'VAIO Optimized' but rather something like 'SPMResMui.dll,-100'? If you do not see this, could you please tell me the version of VAIO Power Management you are using?

I have a 12'' sony vaio with a 16V power adapter. My battery is not good anymore, it was not even holding for 20Min, but my problem now is that the computer does not turn on without the battery at all. I have to leave it charging for hours, then it will go on, but in the middle of the windows loading process it shuts down and does not show any signs of life until you leave it charging for another hour. The voltage output out of the power supply shows 14.70 ~ 15.20 never gets to 16V. Now, comes the questions...
This particular laptop needs a good battery to " buffer" power and the AC adapter only charges the battery but does not have enough Amps to run the computer without the battery?
or
Do i have a Bad power adapter that is not even charging the battery properly?
or
Bad power supply and battery?

Yesterday a sony partner changed the mainboard in my z. Vista runs fine but the z didn't power off! When i shutdown the system it will reboot!
Hibernation and Standby also doesn't work - the screen went black, hdd is working and after a few seconds the desktop is back!
What can i do? I've tested some of the recovery points without success.
Same problem when starting in safe mode!
For information: when shut down in the bios everything is ok, also when booting from an ubuntu cd!
There must be a way to fix this - i hope without doing a system restore from the dvds....

I have chosen the high performance power profile, and set the Min and Max processor states to 100% both when on AC power and on battery, this didn't help at all .....

I'm looking for a new notebook and the Studio 15 looks good, although I've read a few reports about issues and wanted to see what the 'current' revision of the Studio 15 coming out of Dell were like.
Previous issues I've seen reference to are:
- Low speaker quality
- Touchpad is erratic
- Volume control has little 'in between' and sometimes resets itself
I'd appreciate it if anyone can point out in a mature way if there are other inherit problems with this model...
Also I'd prefer to run Windows XP - is there enough community support to allow XP to be installed with all key devices (video, audio, network, hotkeys) functioning?

I'm looking to sell my vaio CS series and purchase a mini 9 with XP and the 10" screen.
I'm curious to hear from owners of any common problems with this model. For example,
a problem with my laptop model is faulty fans that buzz and creak, which was rather annoying.

I have to choose a new computer and I'm not sure what to pick. They're replacing my old e1405 aka 640M (see stats in sig).
I have a small selection of open box units to choose from and don't want a bigger laptop than the one I have... that leaves me with just xps1330s to choose from.
I need to choose quick and was hoping I could get some community help since I don't have time to research.
1) Can I change the exterior colour of the xps (for business reasons)?
2) How much does the dedicated graphics card effect the battery life vs no graphics card on the 6 and 9 cell? Is it worth the loss in battery life to get this? Can I add or remove this later?
3) Are there any known problems with the computer? Common complaints?

Well I got my M1530 today and pretty happy with it overall.
The only thing I don't understand is, I got that wireless remote but I thought there is a pocket on the side of the laptop that I can put the remote in there?
Well, after wiping windows I began the steps to put on Linux. Now I've never had a laptop so I'm not sure if this is a common thing or a problem,
but on the bottom of my LCD screen it seems that the screen is secured too tight to the casing. It gives off a whitish blur at the bottom of the screen only in black displays.

Problems with the Thinkpad X220 and my Samsung 840 Evo 256gb SSD drive. Let me give you a rundown of my past 4 months...
October 2014. Purchased Thinkpad X120E. 1.5ghz processor and low memory made it horrible. Put in 8gb and bought the Samsung 840 Evo 256gb SSD drive. It made the laptop much more responsive but it still sucked...so I sold it. I kept the SSD drive for my 'future' thinkpad.I did the firmware update on the SSD as it required it. It currently has the most recent firmware. When I bought the SSD drive, I plopped it in, installed windows then openSUSE and enjoyed it for a bit. Never gave me an issue at all.
January 2015: Purchased an off-lease X220 with the 2.6ghz processor. Has a 320gig 7200rpm drive in it. Put in 16GB of memory and love it.After playing with it for a bit, I did the most recent BIOS upgrade (1.39) and prepared it for the SSD install.I put in the Samsung 840 evo. Turning on the laptop it sits at thinkpad logo a lot longer then usual. After a bit it goes to the Error 2100.I went into the BIOS, HDD is not detected at all.I kept trying to boot/restart but no go. I always see that Error 2100. I can tell when it won't boot because the thinkpad logo sits for a long time and it seems that the HDD light is always on.I tried to boot with and without UEFI...no go.
I tried to boot with SATA as AHCI or compatibility, no goI put the Samsung drive into a dock and attached it to a laptop. Disk management see's the drive. I can format it and all.I put the SSD drive then into a friend’s computer tower. I formatted the drive using the Samsung software. I tried to put it back into my laptop last night, no go. Drive is not being read.My friends desktop detects the drive in his BIOS just fine...
I believe this is an issue between the BIOS and the SSD/firmware. I looked at some of the updates for SSD's and the thinkpad BIOS, they identify a small part of the model number of the samsung drive but it is not the same.

I received my 1640 yesterday. Big props to Dell, since I bought it on Friday around 3pm (outlet "previously ordered new") and Fed-Ex attempted to deliver it on Monday at 10am (picked it up at the distribution center at night).
I also received my 9-cell battery, but haven't had a chance to use it or review it, so this will focus on the 6-cell.
First - Boxing: Non-fancy tan cardboard box. The laptop was encased in foam and a foamy-sleeve.
No bags were included with this laptop. I got a slim AC adapter (probably about 1/3rd weight of the previous bricks), some cds, and the laptop. Nothing else. Should I have gotten a sleeve of some sort .....

I have just been given a VAIO PCG8A2M (GRX316MP) , i was told "it's broken but if you can fix it yo can have it" so having a quick look at it there's no sign of life on the display but the lights come on and i can here the HDD heads moving about.
Looking a little more i found that all the ram is missing , so now im not sure if its worth buying some ram to see if it works or not ? The lack of ram would prob explain the lack of display but i wonder if i should be getting POST beeps at least, which im not.
So my question is if a VAIO had no ram should (if all else was working) it be getting POST beeps ?

I had it on my SZ and loved it over the XP Blue. Is there a way to get it back? I still have the restore discs from the SZ.
